Chapin Hose End Sprayer. Better Than Ortho?

  • Here is everything you need to know about the Chapin Hose end wet dry sprayer. The tank holds 32 ounces just the same as the ortho. The settings are very similar except for the dry measurement.
at 8 ounce setting the tank is dry in 2 minutes and 40 seconds. The sprayer runs at about a third less volume than the ortho. Meaning that it will take longer to do 1000 ft.² The flow rate on the ortho sprayer is 2 gallons per minute, the Chapin sprayer is 1.5 gallons per minute. Basically, this means that you can set yourself up for a more leisurely stroll.
Depending upon your experience, the rates listed below in the description are suggested for basic applications of any of the liquid products from a Greene County Fertilizer Company.
An added benefit of the sprayer is its ability to put through water soluble fertilizers as well. Even though I am not a manufacturer of any water soluble powders, this would be way easier than many of the things I’ve seen online mixing up powders in a backpack sprayer.
I would suggest that you mark off 1000 ft.² and set a timer so that you can get an idea of the pace you need in order to properly apply product. After a few times of doing applications at the right place, your body won’t forget.
A couple of things to note with sprayer, the filter basket should remain in the cup when you pour through your concentrated material. The straw will then go all the way through to the bottom and pull the material back through the filter. I would suggest you leave that in the cup so that you don’t get in for an object stuck in the sprayer.
If anything were to get stuck in the siphon, it takes about two minutes to pull it apart and clean it out. There are four Phillips head screws on the bottom of the spray device and one on top where the wet dry indicator is.

I have used both of these brands hose end sprayers and for ease of use I'll take the Ortho sprayer over the Chapin for one simple reason.
The Ortho has a trigger you can squeeze and adjust flow rate by how much you depress the trigger.
The Chapin just has an on/off valve that can be difficult to switch on and off when you have protective gloves on and as you are trying to turn it off water is still spraying out while on Ortho, you just stop pressing the trigger which is much safer and easier to use.

Nit picking here but these hose-end sprayers should make the bottom concaved so that centered "straw" can suck up most everything when it's channeled into middle. Then just make bottom thicker a little to allow it to stand up if needed. I'm sure that's more cost than they want though.

Newbie here. I’m about a year and a half in to a lawn renovation. I’ve accumulated several gadgets and chemicals in efforts to eliminate weeds and nurture grass. I’ve been using a four gallon back pack sprayer to apply prodiamine (preemergent) and Celsius (herbicide) over an acre and it’s a lot. Have you used this gadget in a similar task? Do you feel the mixing/application is suitable for the job? It seems like it would be a lot easier and faster using the hose end sprayer over the back back sprayer. I’m a woman and that thing gets heavy filling it a dozen times a day for big jobs. I bought the Chapin hose end sprayer today to feed my vegetable garden but I’m now considering it’s use more broadly. I’d love your feed back. Oh, and I subscribed! Thanks a million. Have been applying your products now for 2 seasons and it really has been amazing, my turf is getting thicker and staying greener longer and I am pretty proud of my yard. With that said I still struggle with these damn sprayers, sometimes the product comes out brown ( witch I like) but other times the water comes out clear and I wonder if it’s working? 2. I've been using the Ortho's dial as my "flow rate". I typically set it at 3oz understanding I'll have more time to spray 1k. If I need to move quicker I just up the dial. Does the Chapin operate like this as well?

I'm sorry but confused. You are saying that no matter what I set the tank dial on, whether it's 8 oz of product in tank or 2 oz, that in 42 sec that amount will be gone? I want to spray beneficial nematodes over a 600 ft area and another area of 1500 sq ft. I will first reconstitute them in a gallon of water but I want to thoroughly wet the ground with say 25 gallons of water small plot and 50 gallons or more for 2nd plot, how do I figure out how long it takes 32 ounces of the nematodes in the cup to empty? Sorry if this is a stupid question.

The rate that comes out of the gun is 42 seconds for a gallon of water. Whatever you set the dial to will inject into one gallon of water.

@@Lawncology Ok thanks, I think I got it. Fixing to try spraying my Strawberries today with Miracle Grow Bloom but also watering them first. Then for my small bed I will put in the Fertilizer amount I want, set the dial for dilution/ gal and spray for 42 seconds and product should be used up. Hope I got that right.
