The first time I heard Judy sing Marieke was in the summer of 1971 off her album *"Whales and Nightingales". I did not know the English translation but the Dutch/French and lilting voice of Judy blew me away. Now that I am 71 (and Judy is 84), I hear this melody and lyrics and it leaves me in tears. Judy and her legacy of songs is one of the female vocalists, that leaves at a loss as there are so many favorites she sung. The day she leaves this earth will be a great day of mourning for me.

Wonderful Judy ! Great thanks ! This second version of this song by Judy was recorded on her excellent and very rare LP (CD later) "Running for my Life".

For those with complaints as to this particular version It was the album," Whales and Nightingales" that truly got my attention with its release in 1969."Farewell to Tawaithe","Time Passes Slowly","Marike".It is a very good album, perhaps like the lovers lament I would listen to this whole album time and time again. It possessed a quality that I believe was a shared event with Judy Collins sounding very good to perhaps beautiful. It is a highly cared for album and worth a recommendation even today.

Judy Collins takes it away - as usual! This is a haunting tune - the music is gorgeous. This makes me lonely for - and miss terribly- my late great freind Betty Rhodes who sang this like no other - chanteuse extrodinaire. Betty Rhodes bade us farwell in 1988 and left many song in our hearts.

At least, she tried in another language than english, even if it is my belief that no one else can sing any Jacques Brel's song with Brel's heart.

Si tu veux je peux continuer an français.

Judy Collins version is overly sentimental. It does not convey the longing Brel expressed in this song. As a Dutch native, I find the Dutch pronounciation in this song laughable.

I'm only commenting on someone who is performing on stage. I would not comment, if it would be a totally normal person from the street, who tries to speak french. But as an artist, Judy Collins should know what she can do und what she shouldn't.
Knowing french and dutch... ti just sounds horrible. Sorry.
