Sadio Mane, Didier Drogba or Yaya Toure: BEST Africans to grace the Premier League | ESPN FC

- You’re not going to want to miss this highly anticipated debate. Who is the greatest African player EVER to grace the Premier League? Is it Michael Essien for his time at Chelsea? Or how about the Ivory Coast’s Didier Drogba? Could it be a current player like Liverpool’s Sadio Mane or Mohamed Salah? ESPN FC’s Colin Udoh and Ed Dove try their best on the criteria: only players who are eligible for African countries and based on their contributions to English football. A few names on the list include: John Obi Mikel, Drogba and Essien of Chelsea, Lucas Radebe of Leeds United, Nwankwo Kanu for his time with Arsenal and Portsmouth, Jay-Jay Okocha at Bolton Wanderers, Sadio Mane at Liverpool and Yaya Toure of Manchester City.

The conversation starts and ends with Didier Drogba mate
Drogba played 11 finals won 10 and scored 10 goals. Credits to the other African players but Drogba is the GOAT
He’s a big game player but not the best imo
He is not the best sorry man goal ratio is terrible
@Robben The goat That means he had a great prime but most of his seasons are weak
Speaking of his goalscoring numbers
@@tevincoley7970 man what are you talking ? respect for Drogba he was in the list of highest goal scorers and has won it too, in the history of premier league Drogba and lampard are top in dual assist goals , kindly check the records
Drogba I would say but when Mane and Salah retire, it's gonna be a close call.
Unless Salah or mane can win more than one prem they do not count.
No
@@jordandavis3867 Mane for what he’s achieved and how he carry himself on and off the pitch, he’s a brilliant advert for the African Continet as well EPL. Sadio all the way.
@@jordandavis3867 Salah already has a better prime and he is easily proving to more a more consistent goalscorer.
@@smallshaq8062 nope, drogba finished in the ballon d'or top 10 5 times only bested by Henry 7 in the premier league era. Salah is nowhere near.
Salah is not even a candidate?!?! Wow.. someone missed their geography class. Yes, Egypt is in fact an African Country.
Maybe they means black Africans player. 😂😂😂😂
@@abdulkarimhan1266 Is the message from ESPN that all Africans are black? Because the title surely says best Africans only.
You must not know who yaya and drogba are if you think salad is even close to that yet
@@nicholascoffey4504 nobody talks about that, but if Mane is up there, then Salah had to be mentioned too because they are the one that we can compare right now, and they are as good as each other.
@@nicholascoffey4504 Salah is the fastest non english player to make 100 goals in the premiere league, period. Maybe you've been hiding under a rock in the last few years, but he's definitely in the top 5 africans in any way you put this, especially if mane is one he included. Also drogbas highest scoring seasons were 29, 20, 12.. Salah has 32, 22, 19.. drogba really only had two crazy seasons then he dropped off massively for the other 6 years.. Salah has done better, and done it for 3 years in a row, and counting.. if you dont think salah is top 5 you're deluded
I'm a Liverpool fan, but Drogba at his best was the best African player in the Premier League above Salah and Mane. It just shows the racism in the Balon Dor and Player of the year that Drogba was never contender for these awards. Drogba was the most complete forward the world has ever seen. Power, Speed, Technique, Skill, Incredible in the air in attack and defence, could take free kicks, penalties and I don't think I have seen a more clutch player ever who always decided the big games. The only striker I have seen who could dominate a back four by himself alone. Lewandowski, Haaland, Mbappe, Salah, Mane, Ronaldo and Messi could never do that.
Delboy0 good to see a Liverpool fan acknowledging the greatness of Drogba
Delboy0 dude stop exaggerating for Christ sake, what do you mean by dominate the back four all by himself, drogba was a great player for Chelsea but it’s unwise to mention him the same breath with Messi and Ronaldo for Christ sake, first and for most his stats weren’t all that incredible he Never scores 20 plus goals in consecutive seasons despite been a striker, he was a great player in his own right but pls don’t over exaggerate, I love drogba has a man and has. A player don’t get me wrong
And there it is. Someone just had to mention racism in all of this 🤦🤦
@@mystikkrap And?
@@dycolonythegem context is very important. chelsea brought in anelka who halted drogbas scoring. and he still got another golden boot.
To be honest I haven’t watched much of drogba as I was a bit young when watching but Mané is a great player and Toure was one of the best midfielder
He was a tank, quick and strong. He scored quite a few goals but he didnt take pens or free kicks, but scoring wasnt his main job, he was that big physical man you aim for, the guy who lays the ball off. He molded todays no.9. Was the first striker in epl football to hold the ball up and to be a lone striker, no one did it like him at the time and managers tried to copy this system he played in but it didnt work cause no st could do what he did. Also his influence in the dressing room was unmatched.
@@liamwilkinson9902 First striker to hold the ball up? Um lol
@@michaelangelo2192 if you watched him you would know what i mean, obvs not the first to ever do it but the first to incorporate his game around it and to sacrifice himself to set the team up.
He was a better version of Werner.
@@liamwilkinson9902 He's my favourite player of all time, and yes, I do know what you mean. Just that comment on him being the first to properly hold up the ball is crazy!
Drogba won more major trophies in England than Salah, Mane and Toure combined
@Abp 7 scoring 10 goals in 11 finals says alot about his individual performance.
@Abp 7 Zlatan is one of the most decorated footballers of all time, what are you talking about
@Abp 7 Yes but when you contribute the most to winning those titles ??
@Abp 7 so what about Drogba , mane is far away in comparing with Drogba , Drogba is the master and more classic
Drogba and Mourinho made playing with a lone striker the fashionable choice and managers still say that they'd like a 'Drogba' type up front
Can tell a lot of kids and teens here with all the mane, Mahrez and Salah screaming but as a PL verteran viewer the 2 big boys were Drogba and Yaya. Mane might join or even top them when he retires but now It has to be Drogba. Stat boys will say 108 in 220 starts but Drogba played in defensive teams. He was a lone striker whose job was to hold up play and feed the wingers and frank lampard. Jose Moutinho revolutionized the 433 formation in the premier league and if you ask him for his ideal striker to this day he’ll say didier Drogba. Drogba was a the big man for the big occasion 10 finals 10 goals or something like that. Older arsenal fans will tell you how he used to haunt them. A fun fact is that in the one offensive manager (Ancelloti) he played with he scored 29 goals and missed 1 and half months of PL due to AFCON. I recon he would’ve broken the record if he didn’t play AFCON that season. The Calvert-Lewin we see now is similar to what Drogba was, however, unlike how the former gets help from richarlison up front, Drogba had to do it on his own...and sometimes with Anelka/maluda.
Didier Drogba is by far the best African to grace the Premier League
Michael Essien and John Obi Mikel together come very close. Those two redefined Chelsea midfield
Yaya plays golf
Aubameyang ? Salah ?
Lol must be cause there light skin
I would say drogba.. But Mane and Sallah are moving so close.
🤣🤣🤣🤣 Obviously Drogba!
Member when drogba single handedly won chelsea their only champions league title vs bayern in munich? I member.......
Ridiculous conversation. Drogba by a country mile. He was the most impactful player (from any continent) in the most successful team of the decade. Title after title, goal in final after goal final, Mr.Wembley, the hero of Munich - Didier Drogba.
Who forgot that Salah is also an African player?! 😂😂😂
@Vernal Equinox lol go check my comment you liked... I wrote more. I totally understand where you’re coming from too they just want everything for themselves...
I'm a Liverpool fan and Salah is not in the top 3 African players for performance level. Salah scores many goals but has many bad games. Salah isn't even the best African player at Liverpool, Mane is.
@Vernal Equinox it’s not racist
5:45
@Vernal Equinox 5:45
Yaya is one of the best defensive midfielder in pl history irrespective of being African . He's so underrated
NoCap Facts yaya wasn’t a defensive mid
The disrespect to salah is ridiculous 🤦🏾♂️ the guy with the record for most goals in a premier league season is left out. Ridiculous
He’s nowhere near the greatest manes not even in the conversation🤣🤣
Itzcallum p well mane hasnt score 30+ goals in a season. What record has he brokeb
As of now I'd say it's Drogba, Mane might surpass him but not his aura and fear. Drogba was the best in the world at something for a while, Mane is not top 3. Big difference.
What about the African player who was top goal scorer of the premier League TWICE & with the most goals in a single campagne EVER ???
SALAH IS THE GREATEST. PERIOD.
Drogba gets so much hate because he doesnt have a great record even though its not bad. He got 100 goals in 220 games which is still really good and he did it against the likes of vidic ferdinand carragher etc. He was of great importance in the dressing room, scored when it was needed and when it mattered and in big games. He didnt always take free kicks or pens either but his main role wasnt goal scoring, it was to be that big man upfront, hold the ball and lay it off, many teams tried to copy the tactics of chelsea but the st couldnt do it because it demanded too much. (Gary lineker said the same but phrased differently) also he played under defensive managers most of the time, never got to experience a great attacking one like a pep etc
exactly
People talking about salah 5:45 they didn’t focus on him because this is a black history month special
The greatest African moment was when Sadio embarassed Neuer😵😵😵😵😵🙄🙄🙄🙄
Ancient knight didier drogba been there done that.
@@TheOtherGuy377 Yup That header at the 2012 UCL,Neuer could barely react but to be honest most goal keepers would not be able to get that.
Drogba would had more goals if he took pks
He took penalties sometimes he would have more goals if he wasn’t injury prone
@@Zenbassador lampard is rarely injured and is the main pk taker.
I can only recall lampard letting him taking one during thr last game of the season as Drogba was tied with Rooney with most goals prior to that last game. And I think that game ended 8-0. Lampard wouldn't let Drogba take the 1st pk. He let Drogba take the 2nd pk
Hang Time yeah you might be right but don’t forget that drogba struggled with injuries during his career so that could be an another reason
Salah and Mané will take away from each other. They are on the same team and they are sharing goals. They might end up being the greatest pair of Africans who played together.
Mahrez would have been top but he sold out going to City.
I thought it was a bit harsh not talking Salah, Mahrez but looking at it a little deeper when Mané was brought up he was cast down immediately as he doesn't have enough years under his belt yet.
Legendary debate I like it finished in the end. And there is only one king and that's Him self the beast, super speed, and madass scorer who gave every defender heart attack. Didier Drogba aaaaaaa.
Droggggggggggggggggggbaaaaaaaaaaaaaa!!!!!!!!!!
N.Kanu and Jay Jay Okocha are so underrated.
I still don't think people understand how great Drogba was. The fact that people judge him for his goal ratio is a joke. That man dominated games even when he wasn't scoring. His contributions went beyond just scoring goals. Other African players in the PL will have to do a lot more to surpass Drogba.
They never look at Drogba's assists he's got loads of that too
Why mention Henry?? Henry parents are not from African countries. They were based in the Caribbean and are creole (I think Guadeloupe), but he was born in Paris.
Yaya 🤫
Nana 🤫
For cup finals and bigs games yes Drogba. However at the end of their carriers Mane and Salah will go down as more consistent goal scorers because they each score 20 or more per season.
The moment salah wasn't mentioned I just stopped watching
@L CM yea bro, they just hate him for no reason
Cause he’s not in the conversation even mane isn’t there’s better African players than them Michael easier John obi Mikel drogba eto’o
We should have a South American version of this
Drogba ruined my childhood
Probably destroyed Bayern in the Ucl final
Sadio Mane🙇🏾♂️🙌
Come on now. Tony Yeboah? This guy's goals are in the top three goals in the premier league and one of the best strikers to grace the EPL
The continent has like a billion people yet we cant produce more talents
Foreheadinho 🤘🏿
Jay Jay Okocha was good and very skillful.
Either of Salah or Mane have the best chance to win the ballon d'or in coming years.
Did the guy on the left really say that Mane has done as much as any other African player to play in the PL in the big games? Does this guy know that there was this guy named Didier Drogba was who probably the most clutch PL striker in his generation. 10 wins, 10 goals in 11 finals speaks for itself. Some of these so called "pundits" need to get a clue instead of just spewing nonsense
Mad respect to Chelsea's African legends.
Someone tell ESPN that Egypt is in Africa.
If Mane is up there, then Salah had to be as well. Both are equally as good as each other.
Salah is CLEAR
We don't need "black" history month. it's makes all black achievements less significant when we have to have a month dedicated to it. A good achievement by a black person is a good achievement. We don't need to overly praise the achievement because they are black. Having a specific month for black history makes it seem like there is no significant black history when in reality there is.
maybe because black history has supressed and decimated over the course of history and whitewashed globally. Slavery was just bad and inhumane but no one in school ever learns how horrific those conditions were. Especially when you have media outlets like The Sun constantly looking to supress wonderful people like Raheem Sterling and others, a month dedicated to trying to remember accomplishments is not that much of a burden to anybody.
@@isaiahjones4557 Black history month is overrepresented if anything
Jay jah okocha and kanu..
Drogba
Everyone needs to understand that in the hardest of matches in the crucial stages against big oppositions, you just know that he was going to score no matter what! Drogba is not a natural goalscorer, but he is a guy you rely on for the big occasions! Even when Chelsea lost to Spurs in a league cup final I believe in 2007 or 08 Drogba scored in that match! So the only final he did not score in was against United in 2008 and he hit the post that night! Yes Salah and Mane will retire with more goals and assists but when the going gets tough, you call Didier Drogba mate! + Salah, Mane, Toure all played in attacking side, meanwhile Didier played in the most defensive side you can imagine and still scored. Apart from the finals, he scored against Arsenal in a FA semi final, Barcelona UCL semi final, Liverpool, UCL quarter final and semi final! He scored against Juve I think it was a quarter final of UCL just to name a few! He is the man for the big occasion!
Drogba , hands down
Drogba is a big match player. He was so good that he deserved to have won 3-4 Champions League titles with Chelsea.I do think that he was better than Samuel Eto,Micheal Essien,Yaya Toure etc.I like Muhammad Salah and Saido Mane but I rate Salah above Mane but Mane has unbelievable workrate and work ethic.
Has to be yaya
If mane is there then why not salah as well?
Drogba stopped a war.. he is the best from Africa
My vote goes to Drogba.
Lingardinho 😉
if were talking about what they did in the epl then drogba. if not then either okocha or eto
Salah is much better than Okocha
@@smallshaq8062 no he’s not🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Pogba, Kante, etc
They’re citizenship is french not African
no one came close to tony yeboah
In there prime it’s yaya hands down he can do it all lol
Jay jah okocha
ETO & DROGBA!!!!!!
🤦🏿♂️you might wanna go back even more past Drogba ESPN. Seriously if u dont knowledge of the topic just dont
Didier Drogba is he greatest o question..........
El Hadji Diouf anyone...?
Obviously yaya no doubt 3pl and and 4best African players award
yaya yaya yaya yaya yaya yaya yaya toure
kolo kolo kolo kolo kolo kolo kolo toure
Yaya
Liverpool without Mane or Chelsea without Drogba. It's probably Mane who will be missed a lot more. Not sure if that is Liverpool's fault or if Mane is just too good
What??? We would not have won anything without Drogba! Drogba scores in every final and semi final!!
@@blackwaterproduction289 Yeah. It's a tough one. But I think Liverpool look flat without Mane as he is the one pressing and also creates a lot of chances, scores headers, ...
@@agent_47_47 it is a big lie imagine chelsea is playing without Drogba? Chelsea lost that championship final against Man united simply that Drogba got a red card and Terry was picked to play a penalty instead of Drogba and he lost it , u can't compare Mani with Drogba, Drogba is his father very dangerous in the front of defender and keeper than Mani
@@enicrypto5620 You probably right. Maybe I am leaning towards Mane because haven't seen Drogba play for 6-7 years XD
City fan, but I say drogba
Sadio is the best
Yaya Toure
best player: Drogba
Best midfield: Toure
Drogbaaaaa
Ask Arsenal 😅
Aubameyang?? Salah?? Like seriously
Aubameyang dude like seriously, i mean don't get me wrong he's a fantastic players but he ain't successful in English football (and don't give me that fa cup excuse cause that's not enough)
RANIT pp lol wasn’t even thinking of the fa cu, if mane can be considered to have had an impact on the epl as an individual, why shouldn’t auba be considered, so you know that since auba came to England he has actually outscored salah in the epl in general
If auba played in a more quality side like Liverpool or man city or Bayern he would be having a higher goal tally every season, I don’t even think it’s reasonable to compare salah and auba, Auba has scored 20 goal plus in over 5 seasons consecutively, salah is pretty much a late bloomer who hasn’t scored 20 goals plus in 5 seasons or more, but to me am a great fan of salah only a retard wouldn’t like him as a player and as an individual
@@dycolonythegem well both mane and salah have won the CL and EPL and they won it in style , not a Liverpool fan but have to say they deserved it and btw last season ings outscored Aguero and kane but that doesn't make him better than those two
@@dycolonythegem but he isn't playing for quality sides unfortunately so... Yeah as i said he's a phenomenal player no doubt but haven't won any major throphy
Drogba has won a champions league weres yaya Toures
Ya ya won champions league at Barcelona
But it best premier league African player that's why Eto isnt involved
mohamed salah
Good cuz salah isn’t an african
Sadio is IMO the best player in the world currently, so him!
Are you skunked
mahrez????
To be honest mahrez should also be considered.
So underrated. Was instrumental to Leicester's title run and has been class at City despite not getting the headlines.
He'll not even make top 20.
@@Ginga so true
If you look at last season only then i think mahrez was definitely citys 2nd best player even though sterling scored many more goals than mahrez.
@@Mikelsteven maybe you need to start watching him.
Its easily Didier Drogba.
this guy doesn't get the credit he deserves.
easily the most disrespected legend by far, because of calculator merchants who ruined football
Jon obi mikel was so underrated.
Funny how Mahrez isn’t even mentioned
Won PFA, won many cups, won 2 PLs one with Leicester
How's Drogba in the conversation? Scores 7-8 goal s generally per season
228 games in epl, 100 goals. A goal just under every other game. He didnt take pens or free kicks that often and his game wasn’t actually to mainly score goals. It was to hold up play, be that physical presence and lay it off to a winger, similar to todays giroud.
Lol what
this is true, one of the most overrated players. People only suck him off because of nostalgia had like 1 and half great seasons

1. BRUCE GROBELAAR
2. MO SALAH (soon he will overtake Bruce in few years time)
3. D. DROGBA
4. S. MANE
5. RIYADH MAHREZ
