Nothing will change until the FA appoints a manager who prioritizes selecting a team that suits a system rather than choosing players based on their names and trying to fit them into a system. This requires a courageous manager who is willing to leave out one or two big names for the benefit of the whole team.

You're spot on. Southgate is a good man manager but tactically he's a numbskull. This is why his record against the top teams is so appalling. What is it? Out of 25 matches against top ten international teams he's won four or five.
I looked back at his last four big tournaments, and literally the strongest teams Southgate has ever defeated was a Colombian side whose star player was having a very poor tournament in 2018, a German side that was often bizarrely bad in 2021, and this so-so Netherlands that looks like it is in a rebuild phase in 2024. That is it. Southgate has never ever beaten an obviously strong team. England never ever overachieves with Gareth at the helm. He has been riding amazing luck with soft groups and easy KO paths for his "achievements".
@moxy6772 Winning your group only means your first KO game is very likely to be easier -- nothing more than that. One bracket path looking much easier is dumb luck.
He did win the “first manager of any team to lose back to back finals in either wc or euros” trophy though if that’s any consolation The only teams to lose back to back wc finals (netherlands 1974 and 1978 alongside west germany 1982 and 1986) had different managers
I couldn't watch any of the games without wanting England to lose but only because I wanted Southgate gone and had he won he'd have been there for ever.
Respect to Southgate. He got us out a slump and restored pride and enthusiasm in supporting our national team again. Not the greatest manager in the world but he got us to believe again. He prepared a perfect springboard for the next manager with more experience and skill to get us a trophy. Very honourable to step down now. Hats off to Gareth for that.
Pochettino was the first place I went for Southgate's replacement. He, like Howe, would quickly have the respect of the locker room. Now watch the FA hire Frank Lampard.
The one problem with Poch is that if he took the England job he would get a lot of flack from Argentine supporters and might damage his chances from ever managing his home country team.
I do not like boring football, but I do not criticize national team managers for playing boring football. But if you choose boring football because it is simple and easy to play, you should play boring football well. England played boring football poorly in 2024. We only have to compare with England in 2022 and 2021 to know the team can easily do better.
It's a success when you consider the past, I dunno, 40 odd years that came before? No titles but at least we got two finals and a semi in major tournaments. He wasn't good enough to push us over the finishing line but at least he got us SOMEWHERE unlike most England managers...
England fans are actually insane. You went from achieving nothing in 30 years to 2 finals and a semi final. He is pretty much the second best manager you ever had. Show some respect.
I think it's the right decision. We need someone who can work with these young players, create a team, regardless of reputations and have them set up to win, not to avoid defeat. I'd go all out for Klopp, Ancelotti, or Bielsa and avoid Potter, Carsley, Gerrard and Lampard like the plague.
Managers like Martinez/Southgate are scared to drop players in fear of media backlash. Much of the media are equally scared to criticise managers/players through fear of losing access. The FA are scared to appoint someone who takes risks, lest they appear reckless. There is a culture of fear permeating throughout modern football, and nowhere is that more prevalent than the bureaucratic nation of England. Should we manage to break the shackles, there is a pool of talent in this country that could dominate world football. Would be lovely if we could muster the courage to actually do it.
For those doubting a klopp appointment is possible… I can give you £5.2 million reasons he might take the job… well and that’s just if he’s paid the same as Southgate which I highly doubt he would be, they would probably up the ante if they thought they could get him. At the end of the day, klopps job is managing, and he has a family to feed. Plus there are players there that a manager may think it would be a great opportunity to work with. . Why not.
This has made my day! For I just couldn't stomach another tournament with him in charge. But I'll have my joy on ice, untill I hear who they appoint next.
He made England extremely strong in 2021. He did make England stronger than Spain in the final only to get taken down by Spain. Twice that England came runners up. Southgate is all about making the England extremely strong and that's it. England are well coordinated and well cohesive but less than Spain in the end. He did good things for England by beating the teams that are more stronger in the major tournaments which were Columbia, Sweden, Germany, Denmark, Iran, Senegal and Netherlands. I reckon Southgate made a right decision. England needs a new tactical vision. England should play a possession based style.
One question. If the next manager fails to reach the finals of any upcoming tournaments but tactically better than Southgate than will we consider it a success ??? I think luck is also an important factor and Southgate had that.
If england gets a top dog and is therefore unable to secure automatic qualification then everyone with a brain would blame southgate for getting england regulated in the first place which is WHY they got the top dog

But if you choose boring football because it is simple and easy to play, you should play boring football well. England played boring football poorly in 2024. We only have to compare with England in 2022 and 2021 to know the team can easily do better.
If you think the FA have a clue about what they are doing at all in any way then you will be sadly disappointed.
Congratulations Mark! You’ll be ruing the day when Southgate gets the United job.
That would be an epic reaction vid if that ever happened 🤣
Gary Neville has just said the last eight years have been a success under Gareth Southgate. What have we won?
Gary Neville is clueless,He also said ole did a good job at united
Neville has been truthful, Southgate is a success in building up a team of pathetic losers.
Guess he meant got to two euro finals but yeah we haven’t won anything
Southgate is the type of guy to go to bed with a ruler to measure how long he sleeps
He had a shower with pool noodles and goggles
The type of guy to put a muzzle on his pet-rock!
The type of guy who orders tap water in a restaurant
The type of guy who got us to two finals
The type to order a glass of water and then complain it tastes funny.
Southgate resigning is a win for football.
Now if only Utd would get him so we could watch weekly meltdowns at being forced to watch Southgateball every week!
True, as a neutral i am relieved twice this week
On behalf of Scotland we are gutted
Agreed
David Moyes rumour is heating up
Aye.
The jocks still hate England? 😁 we're not even trying. xD maybe move on, now?
Devastated 😢😢😢.
Plus there are players there that a manager may think it would be a great opportunity to work with. . Why not.
He’s a Sunday League long ball coach !
From the 80s
Now all I'm picturing is Mike Bassett. 🤣
Pe teacher
It’s a noble thing to do. He has been the best manager England has had for a while but they have got the players and should do a lot more better❤️
This has made my day!
For I just couldn't stomach another tournament with him in charge.
But I'll have my joy on ice, untill I hear who they appoint next.
The England team can get off their knees now…..literally
nope just be more of the same ,the fa have an agenda
The whole country wanted Kane to be dropped and he didn’t listen 😭 I feel that lost us the chance to win
Gareth should be praised for where he has taken the team but proud of him for deciding to step down for the betterment of English football.
The FA could give the job to Klopp but there is more chance of them approaching Phil Neville
It's a shame as they want to control what happens, klopp wouldn't have that. He would win everything imo
I’ve always said Southgate would be a perfect right hand man or backroom staff member, but not a manager.
I now admire Southgate for making the right decision.
thank God he stepped down after the Ten Hag extension.. imagine😱😱😱😱
The Southgate years have been the best since the 60s . Thanks for your service Gareth
Klopp is way better than anyone else in the market
Klopp is not in the market
No chance
One question. If the next manager fails to reach the finals of any upcoming tournaments but tactically better than Southgate than will we consider it a success ??? I think luck is also an important factor and Southgate had that.
Better to go out fighting than with a passing back to Pickford whimper.
If england gets a top dog and is therefore unable to secure automatic qualification then everyone with a brain would blame southgate for getting england regulated in the first place which is WHY they got the top dog
This is the first day I've been excited as an England fan since 2021
THANK YOU SOUTHGATE!
u still cooking jesse?
For going yes 😂😂😂
Hey he takes us to 2 euro final in a row
@@JessePinkmanv this is what I'm saying england fans have very short memories, but it's unsurprising given their international reputation for thuggery
@@JessePinkmanvYeah and didn’t win any…
Expectation: Jurgen Klopp
Reality: Graham Potter
Sean dyche😂
No way your getting klopp
@@tsg1744 noooooo 😂😂
@@sljones9103 Of course not. Its more than a dream 😂
Oh god please no ... THE FA " COME HERE POTTER" Admit it you said it in the voice from Harry Potter 😂
