  • I took an old DeVilbiss Tuffy paint spray compressor model NCE-501 with a 1/3 Hp GE Motor and restored it.
    The Process:
I started by completely tearing down the compressor assembly to take inventory of all the parts that needed replaced. To my surprise, the only things that needed replaced were a grommet and the rubber feet. Even the diaphragm looked usable. I then scrubbed all the dirt and grim off all the parts. I noticed most of the old paint came off so I decided to completely remove the old paint with sand paper. I also used a drill mounted brush to help speed things up. I then painted all the parts trying to keep true to the original colors. I think a different orange would have been better, but hind sight. . . Once all the parts were painted, I reassembled everything. I had to use stoppers for the feet since I could not find any rubber feet that matched. I drilled a counter bore and then a small hole all the way through. I used some longer 1/4 20 screws to replace the shorter ones from the old rubber feet. I think the added height from the taller rubber is a benefit. I made sure everything was tight. I finished it off by cleaning up the wiring and adding a switch cover for safety.

    Safety Notes:
Please make sure the piece you are working on is unplugged. Don't get shocked!! I doesn't feel good. . . trust me.

I was given one of these last year. Just recently took the time to check it out to see what it actually was. Got an old hose with it too. It still works! I'm going to buy a spray gun and see how well it lays down paint. I hope it does well. i can put it to use.
