I like the theory that this old couple knew exactly what the town Jackson was, but maybe not who ran it. They told anyone who came asking to stay away from the area for their own good- which was true from a certain point of view- in exchange for supplies. Them not knowing who the Fireflies are has zero impact on this.
@@LaymanGamin I think he means that the leaders of Jackson bribed the old couple to dissuade any travelers from seeking out the settlement. The couple doesn't know that one of those leaders is Joel's brother.
As someone who has random panic attacks, the worst feeling isn't that you're about to die. The worst feeling is that your entire conciousness is getting disconnected from the real world. It's indescribable to those who never got it, but the closest related thing would be as if everything isn't real and you need to wake up from a dream that isn't there. It's such a frightening and debilitating feeling that it stops me dead in my tracks. The way it's pictured here resembles quite well how it starts before it gets worse.
I feel like Joel’s panic attacks throughout the show is a nod to the original concept of the game, where Joel was originally gonna be a cop with a heart condition.

Came here for the Northern Exposure reference. This episode aired while my mother was receiving chemo treatments and we would watch it together when she rested. She's a big Northern Exposure fan so this was spot on for her.
This is pretty accurate. I remember being in a spirit halloween years ago, and for some reason I wasbhaving really bad thoughts, and then the faces on the masks and the ghouls and stuff (none of which bother me) must have triggered me, because my brain went into fight or flight mode, and I felt like I had to get out of there but could barely move. It was like information overload, intense situational confusion, like my brain was telling me I was being attacked even though nothing was wrong. Horrible feeling.
I was in a school shooting once, I ran into this interior classroom and opened a door to a connecting class to tell them there was a shooting but I couldn’t get any words out of my mouth I just kinda made sounds at them and then closed the door. Like my brain just shut down
I experienced basically the same thing when watching Cabin In the Woods many years back. I was already generally anxious and stressed about my life situation at that point, but for some strange instinctual reason, it only went into a full blown panic attack when I saw the monsters in that movie.
@@fionnleamy844 no it’s not just her. Listen again you can hear two laughs/cuddles one is hers and the others is Pedro’s you can even see his body/arms move when he does it.

How could they know what is going on in Laramie, since they mention Cody I assume this is taking part in the northern part of Wyoming and Laramie is way to the south by Colorado
I’m surprised no one’s pointed this out, but it’s interesting how the sound moves in and out of fading/echoey during Joel’s panic attack. It adds another layer on top of the visual techniques used in the scene and makes it feel much more accurate.
Joel in the show is a different person than Joel in the game, but it's a much more realistic take on the character. I like how they depicted his PTSD and how utterly debilitating a sudden panic attack can be, literally makes you feel like you're dying.
Only thing I don’t like is they say it’s 3 months after the last episode. That’s a HELL of a gap in the story. Joel and Ellie together all that time and we don’t see any of it. Also in 3 months they could have marched from Kansas to Utah and back again a few times. 😆
The reason for that one is because his feelings as a father to Ellie is growing... he is afraid that Ellie will end up like her daughter. That is also the reason why he wants Tommy to deliver her to the fireflies instead of him, to detached that feeling.
It's a panic attack. The last time he was this attached to someone was with his daughter and she literally died in his arms, so it's bringing up a lot of traumatic memories for him.
In the game there’s evidence that he was taking anxiety medicine… losing his daughter, not being able to find his brother, taking care of Ellie as she resembles his daughter and not having anxiety medicine is taking a toll on him
They wanted to make Joel appear weak in this show vs in the game where he's staying stoic and strong the whole time and only losing it when he came face to face with the fact that he might lose a daughter all over again.
It's an adaptation of the source material, Joel having PTSD and panic attacks about losing another daughter is pretty faithful to the game, they are just framing it in a different way
Joel had no panic attacks in the game… they had to make him weak and soft because god in heaven we are not allowed to have strong male characters anymore
Joel literally took meds for anxiety even before the outbreak in the game 💀 if anything the series just shows more realistically what happens when you have mental health issues unmedicated in the apocalypse
I love how calm the elderly couple is, just cracking jokes while at gunpoint
