2019 Kia Sorento Review | How Useful Is the Third Row? | Edmunds

  • The 2019 Kia Sorento has had a mild redesign, gets a new eight-speed automatic transmission, and comes with now-standard third-row seating. Edmunds special correspondent Elana Scherr loaded up the Sorento with gear and friends to find out how useful that third row is and where the Sorento lands on the three-row SUV shopping scale.
Q: What engine is in the 2019 Kia Sorento?
A: The L and the LX come with a 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine (185 horsepower, 178 pound-feet of torque) and a six-speed automatic. A 3.3-liter V6 (290 hp, 252 lb-ft) with an eight-speed automatic is optional on the LX and standard on the EX, SX and SX Limited. All but the L can be equipped with all-wheel drive.
Q: Can you get Apple CarPlay or Android Auto in the 2019 Kia Sorento?
A: Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are standard across all trims. The technology in the Kia Sorento is one of its strengths. The SX Limited trim offers nearly every modern driving aid available, and everything is easy to figure out and worked well.
Q: How much cargo space is in the 2019 Kia Sorento?
A: The 2019 Kia Sorento offers plenty of storage space for personal items, with a specific pocket for wireless phone charging. There is only 11.3 cubic feet of cargo space behind the third row, which is the trade-off for the smaller exterior size, but with that row down, the Sorento offers 38 cubic feet. The power tailgate is a plus.

Very good review, Elana. Our family of three and a half (myself, my wife, our 14 y/o daughter, and a big dog) own the top trim SX-L version purchased in early 2018 before the 2019 models were available. There are a few significant differences in 2019, but not many. So I'll add some comments that apply to the 2019 version, as well.
() Price. I realize reviewers have to go by MSRP pricing but real world prices are often quite different. In our case we purchased the Sorento for $40,000 plus TTL. That was about $8000 off MSRP and several thousand dollars less than a comparably equipped Highlander or CX-9 that we considered seriously. In general, I think KIA sets the MSRP of their most expensive trims to send a message about the quality of their product but I've found that dealers are significantly more willing to discount the true price than dealers of several other brands. It's also worth noting that the KIA dealer gave us a trade-in price on our 2012 Sorento within $800 of KBB's estimate of a similarly equipped/mileage Toyota Highlander. So we made out like a bandit in terms of out the door price. All in all, the napa leather in all three rows, the excellent infotainment system, extremely comfortable seats, and panoramic sunroof made it well worth the price we paid.
() Size. The "Goldilocks" or "Tweener" size of the Sorento was a major selling point for us. At 189" it's over 10 inches (!) shorter than the CX-9. (It's even about 3 inches shorter than a Honda Accord.) Yet it has more interior room in the first row, second row, and third row seating, as well as more overall cargo space than the CX-9. As you note, the Sorento's size makes a big difference in its primary mission, maneuvering in the jungle of suburban traffic and parking at the mall. Our Sorento is my wife's daily driver and she LOVES its size.
It's noteworthy, I think, that the Tweener size category seems to be trending. The Hyundai Santa Fe is in effect a two row, turbo4 version of the Kia Sorento. Along with other two row models like the Ford Edge there seems to be an emerging market for the "Goldilocks" size category.
() Third row accommodations. Our family doesn't need a third row of seating on a regular basis. And you're certainly correct that we have a choice between hauling passengers or hauling gear, but not both. But that's true of most three row "midsize crossovers" other than those that could pass from trucks or buses. For extended trips with six or more passengers, a minivan or large crossover is far more practical. In our case, though, we find the third row to be especially convenient to chauffeur a gaggle of teenage girls around town or go out with another family when it means the difference between taking one or two vehicles. The third row stays stowed about 90% of the time but when it's needed, it's a huge bonus.
I'd also note that KIA purposely restricts access to the third row from the driver side based on what they claim is a "safety issue." I think you'd find it significantly easier to access the third row from the passenger side. Granted that it's still not the easiest access among its competition but accessing the rear seats from the passenger side is much less of an issue.
() Engine/Transmission. The 3.3L V6 in the Sorento is a smooth and quiet mill with the linear acceleration of a naturally aspirated engine. It's not the best in terms of fuel economy and that's undoubtedly a major reason that KIA shifted to an eight speed transmission in 2019. Other than the slight hit in terms of MPG's, though the six speed AT is easy to live with. And you're not the first reviewer I've seen to raise some questions about the performance of the eight speed box.
() Driving. As you noted, the Sorento excels in the logical grouping of its controls, the almost "vault-like" quiet of the cabin, and its extremely comfortable seats. For long highway slogs it's among the most relaxing cars I've ever driven. The adaptive cruise control, something I never thought was important, is a godsend for long trips. Altogether, the driving experience and seat comfort extends the range between stops by about 25%. The CX-9 handles extremely well for its size, especially on secondary roads. But I don't do much canyon carving in our SUV. I have a GTI for that. So whether it's around town or on extended trips, it's been a winner for us.

Great review. I'm glad you gave constructive criticism. The vehicle definitely doesn't stand out, but I like that about it because it's a more timeless look, like it'll age well compared to extreme design changes that will make you go "oh yeah that was definitely a 2020 vehicle," and I say that because SUVs aren't really the care for that. It's more of a family car that you're going to want to have last for a while. My last car was a 2009 Dodge Journey (I have a 2018 Kia Optima now and LOVE it!) and while that thing had many issues, the one thing I will say is that the third row was easier to get in and out of because of how the second row seats folded to the back to slide in an easier angled way compared to getting into the third row in the Sorento.

Fair and comprehensive review. I think the absence of Driver-assist technology in lower trim lines is a significant issue. Kia makes you pay $5,000 to $7,000 more to get life-saving features Toyota makes standard on everything it builds.

    • @dalex7777
      @dalex7777 5 років тому

Bill Owney Kia now offers every safety feature as standard on every trim level of the Kia Telluride. I suspect the same will happen with Sorento.

    • @ram89572
      @ram89572 5 років тому +5

If you need "safety" features like lane keep assist and adaptive cruise control then you probably shouldn't be driving. Trusting your life to a computer that is reliant on sensors is just foolish. I've grown up in the tech age and I would not trust those "features" to do anything to save my life. In fact I would worry more about a having a system that can slam on brakes or turn my steering wheel on its own due to the fact that these systems can fail from something as simple as a sensor glitch. Life saving features are seat belts, airbags, and crumple zones, and Kia includes those on all trim levels

I have a 2019 Sorento SX w/Touring Package. Literally has EVERY feature that the more costly SX Limited (SXL) has except for 4 things...
    1. No heated rear seats
    2. No chrome wheels
    3. Doesn't have quad fog lights
    4. And one other thing that I can't think of right now.
Anyway, it cost thousands less than the SXL, and included everything I wanted and more. I absolutely LOVE the partnership of adaptive cruise control and lane keep assist... Makes road trips a lot easier. 3 of my favorite features that Elana did not mention, however, are:
    1. Automatic rain sensing wipers
    2. Automatic high beams, and
    3. Automatic tailgate... Not your typical auto tailgate... Let's say you're carrying something heavy and/or cumbersome... Other manufacturers who have auto tailgates require you to stand on one foot and slowly kick/swipe your other foot below the tailgate in order for it to open (trying to balance on one foot is probably the last thing I wanna do when my arms are full). With the Sorento (upper trim levels), you simply walk to the back of your vehicle with the key in your pocket, purse, etc, and after 3 seconds the tailgate recognizes you and opens automatically!!! Amazing feature!

Enjoyed the review and reviewer's comments. Other things that may have been informative to owners or any future buyer would be things they find that do not work as they should. What kind of issues they find with the adaptive cruise control function?
Being on the steering wheel is problematic, for me. Appears Kia has not gotten the cruise control safely functional, as one owner commented . That is a big safety issue, to me.
"See some KIA Sorento owner's comments from another page... It would be informative if someone at Edmund's could comment on these issues!"
Surely, more than one person there have driven the Kia Sorento and find different issues on the vehicle driving and functionality.
    1. The voice recognition for the Blue-tooth is not reliable and and adaptive cruise continues to disconnect for no reason at all..
Plus when you have to disengage the front collision avoidance each time to make cruise work, there is a software issue or problem?
The fact that you cant disable adaptive cruise without trying to remember to disengage is dangerous. Your blue-tooth needs to have memory where it remembers who you call most. I have called half dozen people and it does not recall any of them.
    2. "I would suggest to moving the radio volume control button on steering wheel"
    3. Suggest to consider changing radio volume control button on steering wheel. Too easy to accidentally turning it down without knowing it.
    4. The doors do not unlock when turning car off.
    5. Maybe one should consider buying something else. The UVO system is not up to prime time the blue-tooth is unreliable.
Not able to use phone features or talking navigation features. Not too picky about functionality or do not want reliable technology, this would be the car for you.
Question.... Are any you-tuber kia owner having that same issues with the Kia Sorento. Wanted to buy one but not with these issues.
Are these flaws or bugs that Kia can not resolve? At lease, they would keep me from buying one.

This review is horrid. If you can’t tell the difference in driving modes then u definitely don’t know what you are talking about lol.

Good review. Mediocre product. Get the Highlander or Pilot over this low quality Korean any day.

I have had a Sorento since 2013. It has been a really good car so far.
