  • While the Kia Sorento might be a bit smaller than some other mid-size seven passenger SUVs, it also comes with a lower price point. Does that make the Sorento a less-than-worthy competitor in current the crowded state of SUV-ness? Follow along as KBB's Micah Muzio finds out.

    We purchased one yesterday for my wife - the base model. STILL came with steering wheel controls and Apple Car play. Stitching and soft touch plastics make the interior feel MUCH more luxurious than its cost.
    Really quiet on the interstate! If our research paid off and this actually DOES go 250k-300k with good maintenance- I can’t imagine a better SUV for the money.
    In fact, when we pay it off, I might get one for myself.

      I see it with no problem hitting 250k miles. 300 and over kinda is arguabe even honda and toyota don't last that long without major repair. I have seen like i said many sorentos and sportages hitting over 200k miles no problem many people use them for uber/lift so that should tell you something that they go throught a lot of driving! But again just tell your dealership to give you a transmission drain and fill every 30k miles *NOT TRANSMISSION FLUSH* because that will completely risk to weaken the transmission!

    Very nice review and really shows me that Sorento has not changed much from the 2016 version. About that cruise control, I had one in my Infinity EX35 and since we have snow, that inteligent cruise turns really useless. I have a new one comming up in a few days and anxious to see what that 2020 has to offer.

  • @stephenhendricks103
    @stephenhendricks103 5 років тому +50

    Actually, it was that "slightly condensed form factor" that was a major factor in our choice of the Sorento over the CX-9, Highlander, and the VW Atlas. The Sorento is nearly a FOOT shorter than the CX-9 while providing more passenger room in the third row, the second row, and overall cargo capacity.

    • @normt5463
      @normt5463 5 років тому +6

      Stephen Hendricks Tell the rest of the comment section asking about CX-9. It is too small and under powered.

    • @stephenhendricks103
      @stephenhendricks103 5 років тому +12

      Norm T: Actually, I'm a Mazda fan, having owned several Mazdas over the years. And the Signature trim is fairly impressive. But frankly, I find the turbo 4 more suited to the Mazda6 than to the CX9. I wouldn't necessarily say the CX-9 is "under powered"; it's adequate for the vehicle's mission. But even with the substantial torque it's hardly impressive. Further, for highway cruising it's not an especially smooth engine, especially when compared to the V6 in the Sorento.
      Finally, I just don't get the fact that the CX-9 is so large on the outside without corresponding interior space. The length appears to come from a long hood and an extended rear end behind the hatch. I can only assume that's done for styling purposes but it certainly adds nothing to the vehicle's functionality.

      About Honda pilot? Is between this and the pilot for.me

    • @stephenhendricks103
      @stephenhendricks103 5 років тому +3

      @@fentor3713 I'd recommend you drive both. In terms of interior quality and refinement I think the Sorento SX-L is at least the equal of the Pilot's top trim, if not better. And I strongly suspect that if you sit down for serious negotiations rather than relying solely on MSRP prices, you'll find a significantly better deal from a KIA dealer. Moreover, that difference won't be wiped out by resale value five or more years down the line.
      The Sorento is more compact than the Pilot. (It's about 7.5 inches shorter.) But unlike the Mazda, Honda has done a great job of offering a roomy interior. If you need the cargo space behind the first row, it's a very good choice in an efficiently designed package.
      Furthermore, Honda has done an excellent job of targeting families with the Pilot. If you have several children, especially young kids, Honda has a number of features designed specifically for you. e.g. Rear seat dvd screens, a PA system for getting your kids' attention even if they are wearing headphones, a fisheye rear view mirror to see what they're up to, etc. And I believe if you need to accommodate child seats, the Honda is more convenient.
      We bought our Sorento earlier this year before the 2019 Pilot was available. It appears that Honda has upped its game recently rather than relying solely on its strong reputation from the past. If we were making the same decision now I think we'd still go with the KIA but it would be a close call.

      I was surprised by the legroom in 2nd row and the space in the 3rd row....even compared to our Suburban which has tons more storage but different animal all together. Big deal was this length is a breeze to fit in the garage even compared to the Lexus ES sedan that it replaced. Granted, not tons of storage with 3rd row up, but you can't have everything.

    I bought a brand new 2019 Sorento LX (with convenience package) about 18 months ago. The car has little over 50k miles on the clock now. One thing I noticed is that the suspension is quite stiff over most concrete road surfaces (unless it's paved all the way with asphalt, which is rare here in North Texas unfortunately). I could literally feel every minor bump, crease and imperfect road condition on my butt. To me it almost feel like as if the car has stiffer aftermarket springs installed. Also the car seems to have a pretty low tolerance towards wind shear at highway speed. It could be blown left and right even at mild wind when driving over 60 mph, and I have to make constant corrections just to make it go straight over those conditions. Anyone with the 2016-2020 genration Sorento experience similar problems?

  • @austing4321
    @austing4321 5 років тому +23

    I see a lot of comments asking about the CX-9. My parents own a 2016 CX-9 and it is good looking and fun to drive but it's the most impracticable SUV we've ever had and the most unreliable compared to our old Santa Fe (which the Kia is based on) and a highlander we had before that. The third row much worst than the Sorento's, second low legroom is also non-existent for anyone over 5'5 and the seats are hard to fold to get into the third row and then the backrest doesn't return to a normal position when you pull them back, which doesn't make sense. The infotainment system is unreliable, out of date, and hard to use. Mazda finally added carplay but the dealer is charging $500 fucking dollars which is BS. The A/C controls throw any thought of ergonomics to the wind. The cabin looks nice but a closer look reveals the underwhelming quality especially at the center console where the plastic flexes, moves, and scratches like a GM interior. My mom spilled coffee on the center console on morning while she had her hands full and it was cleaned up thoroughly as soon as it happened but it seeped through the gaps in the piano black plastic and broke the circuit board to the A/C system which cost $1000 to fix. In comparison, a few years back, my dad left the windows down on the Santa Fe on a night it was gonna rain and the car, including the electronics were soaked in the morning but nothing broke. On the mechanical faults, the engine is loud, thrashing and under powered and the exhaust will sometimes emit this low pitched humming throughout the cabin which hurts our ears, especially on long trips. My mom had the Hyundai Santa Fe for 11 years for 150,000 miles and was treated much worst than the Mazda and never gave us issues and had a much better engine than the Mazda. My family regrets not buying another Santa Fe or a Sorento or even a Highlander. The Mazda is not durable or usable enough to be a real family vehicle. Besides the new Santa Fe and Sorento look better anyways so the Mazda has a slight one up in handling and that's it.

    • @austing4321
      @austing4321 5 років тому +3

      The 2016 is a brand new design and platform... Even if it was the older platform that you're talking about, it should still not have these issues. Auto journalist overlook these issues because it handles well and that's all that matters to them, they want everything to be a sports car, which is why I can't take some of these car publications seriously. At least KBB and US News gave it a fair review when it came out and mentioned that it's not best in class for what it is.

    • @austing4321
      @austing4321 5 років тому +3

      Actually Brian, VW's infotainment can't compare to the ease of use of the Kia. Ford has a pretty great infotainment system also but Kia is one of the best if not best in class when it comes to tech. Hyundai/Kia are always willing to jump on board with the latest tech while VW seems to take a while. Hyundai was one of Apple Carplay and Android Auto's first partners and now include it standard on all of their new cars. VW engines are always decent for the most part, it's their electronics that break far more often than their Asian and even some American competition. I laugh when someone recommends a VW for reliability.

And I've owned two GTI's since 2013 with another 80,000 miles and, again, not a single engine problem.

    I bought my '19 Sorento LX - V6 a little over a month ago. I went from a 2013 Hyundai Santa Fe Sport. I loved my Santa Fe, but they had changed over the accessories from '13. I need an in dash GPS because of my job(s) and they only have one now on the Ultimate Model and it is very pricey. The Sorento has one so that is the main reason I got it. To compare, I like the V-6 over the 2.4 because it has much more pickup. The ride is very similar as well. I do miss some things that I had on my Santa Fe, the moonroof, the Bluelink service (loved it, Kia ought to adapt something like it), while the Sorento does have seat warmers as did the SF, it doesn't have a heated steering wheel. I would gladly trade the heated wheel for the seat warmers. One design difference is the dash on the Sorento intrudes into the cabin more than the SF. The design of the SF was actually more recessed toward the front of the cabin which gave some more leg room. The Sorento's juts more into the cabin, but it's not too bad. I don't really care for the third row seating, there is just me and my wife, but it does have more cargo room than my SF when the seats are lowered into their wells. With the second row lowered, it's a cavern with a lot of room, much more than my Santa Fe had. The Santa Fe did have more storage compartments under the carpet in the back and, mine didn't have a compartment cover that pulls over as it shows in this video. I did like the electric liftgate, handy when you have packages in your hands. Just stand behind it with the "smart key" in your pocket, and it will open up for you! Handy. I also liked the lane departure alarm even though it goes off if you just move over close to the lane lines, not just when you go over them. I've also experienced the automatic braking, once. A car stopped short on me last week and, I was just fixing to push the brake pedal when the Sorento took it away from my foot and brought me to a stop. That was quite interesting. The Smart Cruise takes some getting used to though. I like it, but I ride in the left lane a lot because I am usually going about 10 mph over the speed limit, so I am usually passing people. When on the interstate, I'll be in the left lane cruising at around 80 and some car will jump over into the lane doing 60 and my Sorento will just slow down, even putting on the brake to maintain the distance between us. When the "slow poke" will finally move over, it will speed back up to 80 and maintain the speed there. It is convenient, no tapping the brake pedal, and pushing resume over and over, but it seems to take some of the driving control away from me. While I miss my Santa Fe, the styling of the exterior and interior is much better than the Sorento, one thing that I like is, the Sorento is just a little more higher off the ground. One of the first things I buy whenever I buy an SUV is a trailer hitch. With my Santa Fe, having it where it is, sometimes when I went over a speedbump or some driveways, it will scrape just slightly. Nothing major, but I was always conscience of having to angle my way in to keep it from scraping. When I got this hitch, I found that it is a good 2 or 3 inches higher off the ground. I haven't had to worry about that while turning into my driveway, The jury is still out about my "new" car. The reason I put that in quotes is, 3 weeks after I bought it, I was taking a man to his house after a doctor appointment and there were 3 buzzards on the side of the road. I saw them and slowed down and was moving over into the left lane to give them plenty of room. They took off and one flew into the path of my Sorento and I hit it with the right outside mirror. It slammed the mirror up against the right side window, knocking the mirror off. I had to take it to the shop and get some work done. It wasn't bad, at least not as bad as it did to the buzzard, but that took the new off of it. It was a good value for the money, so far, I am happy. The reason that I bought this one compared to some others is for the warranty. Come to think of it, that's the reason I have bought 5 Hyundais before this one. I want to have some peace of mind and I extended it to 10 years, 100000 miles bumper to bumper. I recommend that.
