    I don’t want family and friends to even know about my channel 😂. But you’re right no one watches and they definitely don’t comment. Consistency seems to work out eventually. It just takes time. Honestly I don’t even want to rush it cause I have to get thicker skin for the mean folks that will undoubtedly come.

      Yes, you raise an excellent point! Thank you. That's definitely the benefit to obscurity when your channel is small -- you don't have to worry about what your friends and family would think (which a lot of people do starting out).

    I was a little dubious about clicking on a growth vid with so few views, but taking the chance was worth it! I’ve watched several of your vids now. you’re pretty chill and your friendly outro is nice, like you really are just chatting with us. and more importantly, you’re realistic, encouraging, and give a lot of useful advice, some of which I’ve heard much bigger channels also recommend, but you do so in a more distilled video with less visually loud editing, haha. thanks for sharing!

    My biggest hurdle is comparing myself to others. 😅

    • @ByPageTurner
      @ByPageTurner  Місяць тому +1

      Oh yeah -- that'll trip you up every time. I used to have a really tough time... I'd go on Reddit and read about people talking about their stats, and I'd compare myself to what they were saying and get really discouraged.
      But I kept going and was confused when my first channel started to take off (this is my second one), because my stats shouldn't have been good enough for that to happen? Going by the people on Reddit who were giving advice...
      But then I stumbled on to some videos where small channels who had broken out were sharing their stats -- and it became VERY CLEAR that some of these people "helping" on Reddit weren't telling the truth.
      And that helped me a lot. I might make a video on it later.
      But in any event, it's VERY EASY to compare yourself and your UA-cam journey to other people -- but I find it rarely to be helpful to me. (And it can even hurt.)

      😅You know... being an armadillo is not the worst analogy... It reminds me of how freaking out as a creator can be counterproductive? I'm thinking about how armadillos defensively will jump in front of cars (which would work to scare off a predator in the wild) when it probably would be better to lay low and chill out.
      Or at least that's my lay understanding of them. I have very limited experience with armadillos.

    On the topic of feedback, it's important and even comforting to keep in mind that the ratio of likes and comments to views is very low. The ratio for likes is about 1 like to every 25 viewers, and for comments it's one in every 200! That's an average, but it will keep things realistic and keep us from feeling too discouraged when just starting out. After all, we ourselves don't like and comment on every video we watch; that doesn't mean it's not a good video.

    • @ByPageTurner
      @ByPageTurner  Місяць тому +1

      Yes! You're right on about those ratios.
      I have also seen people get very frustrated because they'll get 100 views and "only" pick up 4 subscribers -- but that's actually a really strong ratio. It varies by niche, but apparently a new subscriber per every 200 views is average (similar to commenting).
      I'm amazed at how much all or nothing thinking happens in the UA-camr communities, especially among smaller creators. It makes it far too easy to get unhelpfully discouraged.

    I love your videos; they're simple and easy to understand. I'm trying to master scheduling and batching, but it's still not happening, so my consistency is suffering. I would love to have even three videos scheduled. So far, I've only managed to schedule two videos twice. How can I make it easier to improve a little bit every day? A content calendar is another hurdle I haven't mastered yet. Thank you. xx

    • @ByPageTurner
      @ByPageTurner  Місяць тому +2

      It honestly took me a while to get the hang of batching!
      For a while, I was doing one video at a time, so don't be too hard on yourself.
      My big hurdle as a beginner was video editing -- I was a complete newbie til last year and I HATED it at first (I don't anymore).
      I made my goal to improve a little every video -- which was once a week for me when I started. And I would focus on something different every week.
      So one week, I might focus on doing a better job with scripting/outlining what I was gonna say. Another week I'd focus more on my thumbnails. Or my titles. Etc.
      And I would schedule a session once a week where I would make an effort to learn about that. So I'd search for UA-cam videos about writing good titles (as an example) and watch those and learn and bring it into my next video.
      Eventually I worked more on editing techniques once I stopped hating it so much. (It took me SIXTY HOURS to edit my first video and it's much simpler than the ones I do nowadays.)
      I think that's key too... balancing what you're focusing on improving as you go. So... not ALWAYS focusing on what you HATE, making sure you're working on improving aspects of the process you like and are good/okay at as you go along as well.

      I have found Clipchamp very user friendly and intuitive (if a bit limited/basic in some aspects).
      Davinci Resolve is somewhere in the middle for me? It's not as user friendly as Clipchamp but does pretty much everything you'd ever need (and the free version is quite good, as long as you have a computer that can run it).
