- This is not a fun video to make, but an incredibly important one. I felt like I could not create a series on the runes without discussing how they were used in Nazi Germany as well as fascists and white supremacists today. I hope that after watching this video you'll be more aware of how Runes are still used in modern day fascism and that you'll be able to spot them as hate symbols easier.

As a punk witch, I appreciate this video A LOT. Most witchcraft channels I follow, the people behind them tend to stay within the pretty, aesthetic side of witchcraft. Which is all great, I love it, but no one really goes into detail like this about all the dark, gross history of witchcraft and occult practices such as the white supremacy and appropriation that is wide spread in all sorts of areas . So thank you very very much for having a dedicated video about this

Thank you for this it needed to be made so those who have not studied these know what they are and what they are about . I had a run in with a shall we say far right Norse Path Coven recently. As soon as i saw certain runes and asked certain things i ran a mile. There seems to be more about at the moment.
what a fantastic video Bente, I can see so many aspects of this reflected in the H*ndu nationalism which currently appropriates the old H*ndu Pagan ways. as someone with an eclectic practice moving to Germany, this is such a great video. I hope I find the right spiritual spaces for myself when I get there. I'm sure people like you are the majority.

When I was living in East Germany I stopped wearing Runes because in the area I was living they were seen as a marker to identify Neo-Nazis. It was such a shock when someone told me because while I knew that they had a connection I didn't know they are still used like this.
Yeah it’s especially bad in eastern Germany sadly 😞
This is really helpful as someone living in the American south, for obvious reasons. I didn’t know about a lot of these. I remember recently seeing the SS symbol on an electrician van, so I can’t imagine what I’ve missed around me.
As a German, I always have the feeling of being looked at funny when I wear my amulets.
Carry Gebo and Eihwaz as an amulet of bone, Yggdrasil and Thor's hammer.
Was a "Christian" until 4 years ago, but I noticed that the pagan faith feels more correct to me.
I think it's a shame that you have to explain and justify why you wear something just because the Nazis used to misuse it for their ideological filth and reinterpreted it.

Yeah it’s definitely sad. Maybe try combining the amulets with something that screams „I’m not a Nazi“, like rainbows or something xD I think if I was to wear any kind of Nordic symbols on a t shirt for example I‘d make it an openly „I‘m queer“ shirt 🤣

This info is so helpful, I appreciate the warning about Steven Flowers and his other penname. I read his book about Icelandic magic this year and some things in it, not to mention his lack of cited sources, put up red flags for me. This one’s going in the trash!

This is the first video on the subject i actually enjoyed. Usually know one talks about the history or reasoning behind it the changes. Im glad you made a very informative video and actually said before you judge a tattoo make sure you see what else is on their body.

Thanks for the informative video. But honestly now I feel a little weird, next month I'll get Algiz tattooed on my sternum in order to be used for protection right above my heart. Seeing what they did with that makes me feel a bit anxious tbh

Dear Norse Witch , many thanks for your explainations on the history of "hate runes " used by fascists. It was very interesting . I am a very spiritual person, unfortunately I am born in 1970 , wich means , whwn I visited school the time between 1933-45 was too close, schools didn´t have much about that time in their education plans, so thank you for the lesson of history ! I wanted to use runes for divination for the lognest time, but because of the abuse of them by fascists, i was discouraged to do so. Your vid helped me , to get a deeper idea of runes and WHEN they are critical. Again : Thank you !

Hi Bente. I have a question. Being that you warn ppl not to use the Armanen Runes because they were invented specifically to enforce Nazi ideology could it also be possible that there are dark or sinister forces inherent in them or are they just sterile?
That’s a good question. I never worked with them so I can’t tell you for sure. But I know that there are also a lot of people that worked with them not knowing their past that weren’t fascists. So yeah it could be…. But it also could not be 😅

I have just now discovered your channel and I wish I discovered you earlier. UNFORTUNATELY I do associate people who practice Norse paganism and as a bit on the side of white supremacists and neonazi ideologies even I though I rationally know that that is not everyone, the few who are are very loud about their beliefs and often have these very same symbols tattooed on their bodies. I hope that anybody getting into Norse/germanic religions do watch this video because its very well researched and presented.

I read a journal once about Hitlers obsession with the occult influence on his reality. I cant remember where i found it, it was a statement about how Hitler wend into the forest during lunar ceremonies to work with mannaz rune. It may have been yung or Nitzch (spelling?) but their runes are not the ones i dream with cause they were creating a magic system through logic. The runes speak to you, we cannot order them like so many schools of magic try to 'create' something that suits and aligns with all their philosophical ideas. Its the difference between creating a religion and being natural
From my research Hitler was more pragmatic about his goals for a greater Germany and it was Heinrich Himmler that was obsessed with the occult and creating a new religion among the SS elite. He even built a special temple/lodge called Wewelsburg which was supposed to be some kind of holy site for the SS cult. Himmler's antics actually pissed off Hitler a number of times and Hitler made fun of him behind his back for it.
Here are some interesting quotes from Hitler ranting about Himmler's obsessions:
"What nonsense! Here we have at last reached an age that has left all mysticism behind it, and now he wants to start that all over again. We might just as well have stayed with the church. At least it had tradition. To think that I may someday be turned into an SS saint! Can you imagine it? I would turn over in my grave.... Himmler has made another speech calling Charlemagne the "butcher of the Saxons." Killing all those Saxons was not a historical crime, as Himmler thinks. Charlemagne did a good thing in subjugating Widukind and killing the Saxons out of hand. Re thereby made possible the empire of the Franks and the entry of Western culture into what is now Germany."
"Why do we call the whole world's attention to the fact that we have no past? It isn't enough that the Romans were erecting great buildings when our forefathers were still living in mud huts; now Himmler is starting to dig up these villages of mud huts and enthusing over every potsherd and stone axe he finds. All we prove by that is that we were still throwing stone hatchets and crouching around open fires when Greece and Rome had already reached the highest stage of culture. We really should do our best to keep quiet about this past. Instead Himmler makes a great fuss about it all. The present-day Romans must be having a laugh at these revelations."

Very informative, thank you. As with words, context is everything - the symbols themselves are neutral, and I think instead of supressing their usage, we should bring them back and try to restore their honor, like Hermann Haindl did with the runes in his tarot - putting runes besides hebrew letters, no less! I love it. A good gesture for reconciliation.
The more we supress, the less these symbols are used in neutral or good ways, becoming "exclusive" to hateful ideologies. I could be wrong.

I'm gonna cry. I just bought anxiety rings that have runes on them, and I thought I should look them up because one of them looked similar to a runes I heard Nazis used or that fascists used. And at least one of them used only Armanen Futhark. I'm crying inside right now. I hate eBay. Idk how to send it back to get my money back, and I'm so pissed I didn't think about it before.

You'd be wrong. Unlike most of the runes mentioned in this video, the black sun is a modern symbol designed by the nazis and used almost exclusively by neonazis.
