- This video was requested by a lovely subscriber. They were wondering what the Phonetic Values of the Runes were. So I thought I'd wrap two topics into one video. In this one I'll quickly go over the Phonetic Value of each Elder Futhark Rune and explain how they sound. But not only that, I'm also explaining how to use the Runes to write Modern Languages like English or German. This is a tricky topic, so get ready!

I've seen the runes written with a signifier to indicate a modern sound. So for example, you would put a little dot to the top left of Sowilu to indicate the SH sound rather than the S sound. Some runes would have multiple signifiers, such as Jera, with a dot in the top left to signify the hard J, or a dot in the bottom right to signify the hard CH. When writing in the past, it was easier for me to have a key to indicate which rune/signifier went to which phonetic sound, perhaps in the front or back of the book to be easier to flip to.
Dear Norse Witch, I am not an expert but to translate every single letter into runes to me is the right way. The seccond variation you offered, is like our Lautschrift. It is a possibility, but we usually don´t write our words and sentences in lautschrift , we always write them the first way, you offered to us. Just saying... But maybe you as an expert are right witth the second way you mentioned...

I been thinking about about getting a bind rune tattoo with my little one name. Her name is Alexandra, but we call her Ally. What do you think the best runes would be. Thank you so much for all your wonderful videos.
If you wann ago the phonetic route it would probably be Ehwaz - Laguz - Isa, since the A in Ally is more of an Eh sound (like in "every") than an Ah (like in "part") sound. You would only need one Laguz since you only hear one L sound, and the Y make the EE/EA sound like in "easy" or "week", which would be the Isa rune.
If you want to go letter by letter it would be Ansuz - Laguz - Laguz - Jera.

Some runes can have another forms as well? Im strugling with some runes ive found, it sometimes apears in some alfabets and in others not,like jera that not apear sometimes and kenaz that have others 2 or 3 figures to represent K or KK.Can u help please..?

So how are phonetic values determined for languages that have ceased to be used before protogermanic? As in they use this in archeological studies, how are they determining phonetic value? As in say when they refer to Olmec, is it the proceeding civilizations pronunciation in a spoken language for which phonetic values can be reliably traced in origin, I just don't believe things like this sometimes not because I am refuting it could be true, simply because I can see so many reasons it may have severe loss in the translation process
