Just discovered this gem of a Vocal Analyst. I absolutely love watching this woman dive into the music I grew up with. The way she genuinely enjoys and then crisply deconstructs the vocals and artistry of my high school heroes is nothing short of extraordinary. Her unique perspective adds such an intelligent layer to the experience, making me not only revisit these songs but also appreciate them in a deeper, more meaningful way. It’s like rediscovering old friends with a fresh perspective. Thank you for bringing so much insight and passion to these classics!
In his prime one of the best metal singers ever in my opinion. When you hear him speak normally it blows your mind he could hit those notes. Currently he sounds the best he has in a while.
Thank you for reacting to this I couldn't find anyone to react to it. Especially because its the highest note he's ever hit. At 1:32 too his voice is just so amazing his voice actually is harmonic and it creates a distortion that sounds amazing.
The intro comes in with a 6 over 4 feel. Very fast sextuplets on the kick drum, guitars, and bass give it that machine gun feel. Vinnie, Dime, and Rex were literally a metal machine when it came to power grooves and their musical stops, rests, breaks, or whatever you want to call them were absolutely precise. They were so tight it gave you chills! And, Phil had such a huge range back then that it sounded at times like Rob Halford or King Diamond. The way he could go from a low growl to a piercing scream was amazing. Glad you reacted to this song. It is one of my favorites on CFH.
The Cowboys From Hell Album was the only commercially successful album with Phil Anselmo that had a high pitch singing theme throughout. After that album the band got even heavier and Phil stopped singing in really high registers, for the most part. It would be interesting to see what your take is on an album like "Vulgar Display of Power" or "Far Beyond Driven".
Exactly! They were different after CFH album. They became groove metal. Hollow or Floods are good examples of Phils vocals moving forward, for slower songs but Shedding Skin is a better representation of their typical sound with interesting vocals that isn’t just screaming
He didn't stopped to do high notes even in bootlegs in 1992-1993... There s gigs where he does his older style. The rest that he took the same fondation but stopped to do vibrato and added more gruff to it. Also as he matured his voice got much thicker, that gives impressions of low notes but... Some stuff he does in Reinventing the Steel is tough to sing to follow. The chorus of Revolution is my name is upper full voice and to do everything on the song in one take is tough as fuck. Despite appearences. In vulgar there s some basis that is exactly the same than the 2 previous albums, but his voice became thicker and tougher he morphed. No good attack the radical the second part after the solo in Mouth for war. Even on the back throat texture on im broken in the " Yaaaarggh" its like his old style. But more raspy. But the throat sound and the actual timber ( note, not just overdrive) its exactly the same. Same frequencies on This Love at the end, but more distorted, that said in many live shows, including the Japan 1994, he does it with the old style with a much open sound and timber.
Being originally from the D/Fw area and growing up in Arlington where they were from is great to hear you give them a reaction. The brothers went to my high school. ❤
I lived in Arlington off of Fielder and Arkansas Lane. We used to drive by their house all the time back in the day. Saw Dimebag driving down Bowen with his pink beard. Gave him the 🤘 lol my ex's cousin broke into their house once and set off the silent alarms. No idea why he did that other than being on drugs. Met Rex at Arlington memorial once. Such cool guys. Still can't believe the brothers are gone.
@@loucastillo5680 Lol that's awesome. I'm happy I got to meet a couple of them. They were just cool and funny. We used to watch their home videos over and over and over. They are hilarious 😂
If you really wanna be shocked, listen to Phil's speaking voice in an interview. Super deep voice which makes his high notes even more impressive. Phil is a beast.
you generic people are always so easily impressed by the most mundane details.... and you're probably referring to his talking voice in his 50's, rather than his young 20's when this came out.
You were 💯 correct about the harmony. What you were hearing was their guitar player Darrell Abbot matching thr vocals on his guitar. He was one of the most technically adept guitariats in metal music a true genius.
Vinnie and Dime were both top-tier musicians--even that is an understatement. Their timing together on stage in itself was a thing to behold. They were like a pair of synchronized atomic clocks.
Oh, cool! Don't apologize for smiling. Pantera has that effect on a lot of people. Their music bludgeons you with talent and the spectacle, but also thoroughly energizes you.
The percussive bass sound you heard was a combination of bass guitar and very fast double kick drums. The kicks were mic’ed to capture both the sound of the drumhead being struck (a higher pitched sound) and the “boominess” of the air being forced out of the other side of the drum. When mixed with the bass guitar, it’s a very visceral and primal sound.
I think it's so cool that you appreciate Pantera music. They were definitely in a league all their own when it came to composition and musicianship. Phil had an incredible voice back then. Keep growing your hair out, it looks awesome!
*Dimebag* *_DemiGod_* *Darrel!* Having lost the pick he "gave" me from the stage back in Pantera's live at the Gods Of Metal 1998 in Milan is something I'll never recover from. We're here to talk about Phil and his amazing voice but... daaaamn... Dimebag... _Rest In Music_ man, you're always gonna be missed!
This is why yours is the coolest vocal channel by far. First of all, I've been suggesting this song for years, nobody else ever bothered to listen. So Thank you. Second, you actually appreciate the music as well and get hooked into the groove. I believe the sound you're hearing at the beginning might be a flanger on the bass. Hard to know unless you describe it more clearly.
It's impossible, such fast music resonates with you so much. It's a shock, especially since you discover a new genre and this song is exceptionally thrash metal
Diddle-eh Diddle-eh Diddle-eh.... Ta-ki-ta Ta-ki-ta... 16th note triplets:) 2 great ways to count them with the voice. Great to see this reaction to a great band, thank you!
Skitchin' and Road Rash might be the games you recall. I believe they had some metal background music but it's been forever since i played either. Great Video!
When you speak, everything is beautiful inside of my heart, I start listening to music, your smile get me fall in love!! I like this video. Greetings fron México City
Phil has a deep voice in real life, a good vocal performance demonstrating this would be Stone the Crow from one of his other bands, Down. You hear soul in his voice on that tune.
In the studio we call it stacking vocals. There are overdubs also but they definitely used stacking here to accomplish the duet sound. You're just taking the recorded track, doubling it (tripling or more) & then mixing which gives it that nice full, rounded sound 🤘🏽
What might be tripping you up is the fact that along with triplets going on with the bass drum but the snare is on the 3rd beats which is also kinda weird.
Honestly, I always thought this song was very similar to what was on the album before this one back when they were doing glam metal. Obviously it's heavier-feeling, but the vocal style from before is more prominent than the other songs on Cowboys.
@The Vocalyst Here's how the intro is rhythmically constructed: It's all in 4/4 and the guitar & the bass are playing constant 16th note triplets, grouped as a sixtuplet for each of the four quarter note beats, so a totalt of 6 x 4 = 24 notes per full 4/4 measure. The drums are however a little more intricate than that... The kick drums (yes, plural - the drummer Vinnie Paul, may he rest in peace along with his brother Dimebag, used two kick pedals and two kick drums) are doubling the rhythm of the guitar & the bass, then on top of that is the high-pitched bell of the ride cymbal which is played on each eight note beat (so twice per quarter note beat) and the snare drum is only played on the 2nd and 4th quarter note beat (often called "on the back beat"). If you find it confusing while listening, it might be that the kick drum rhythm us throwing you off. If your ear/brain interprets the kick drum rhythm as straight 16th notes instead of triplets/sextuplets, then it's gonna be really hard to make sense of the ride bell and the snare respectively. If that's the case, try to focus on listening to the ride and snare first, and try feeling the pulse there before "letting" the kick drums enter the equation.
Great deep cut to react to! Lots of gems on this album that don't fall into "regular" Pantera rotation because Phil is still singing in such a higher register on this album compared to later albums
To understand Phil fondation other than that its the previous album , Power Metal (1988). While beign flexible in all sorts of registers before going more extreme Phil school of techniques are based on Rob Halford ( Judas Priest), that you can cleary hear in that shattered song as well, Geoff Tate ( Queensryche), Deep Purple, David Lee Roth ( Van Halen), Paul D'ianno & Bruce Dickinson ( Iron Maiden), Eric Adams ( Manowar) or Dan Beelher ( Exciter), David Wayne ( Metal Church ). Some stuff that imitators later didn't have on background. Thats why Phil sounds different, he evolved from that but used that kind of value from thoses previous years. That said live already in mid 80's/ Late 80's and in songs like Over and Out he had thoses others influences that he pushed as he went along : Henry Rollins ( Black Flag), Roger Mirret ( Agnostic Front ), James Hetfield ( Metallica), Cronos ( Venom), Tom Araya ( Slayer), Paul Balloff (Exodus), Don Dotty ( Dark Angel), Kyles Thomas ( Exhorder, that he almost grew up with as neighboors, as they re from the same place, Nola, New Orleans), and many more like Lamounier ( Sarcofago) etc.
The silences that Pantera does are windups. They're hitting you so much, then there's a pause, you think you're getting a break, but there's an uppercut imminent.
Well I believe Dimebag got his perfect timing,at such a fast pace, from playing with his brother Vinnie, the drummer, since they began to learn to play to Kiss songs late 70's. Fun stuff. Vinnie was Dimebags human metronome.👽👍
You feel those "video game vibes" because heavy metal and technical guitar playing has always been popular in Japan and many Japanese developers of now classic console games have programmed their music with a strong influence of heavy metal music and its typical guitar riffs and melodies.
The kick pattern, along with the guitar and bass is sextuplets, which is 6 notes per beat. This gives you a swing feel. The bell of the ride is on the 1st & 4th sextuplet, which end up on every beat & the 'Ands' of every beat (so smack dab in the middle of each beat. This is known as 'straight'. You're hearing a swing & straight feel at the same time, which can pull you in two different directions.
I never do this, but there's a death metal female singer named Chaney Crabb. Her vocal range needs to be analyzed by professionals. Check out the song "The End of Everything" by her. She does a one-take performance in the studio. It shouldn't be possible to have vocal control like that. I love your content ❤
LOL every Pantera fan wishes his girlfriend / wife would react like this when we put on Pantera....thanks for giving us hope that women exist who can appreciate how f**kin awesome this is.
I think you're hearing / feeling the bass drums triplets. Vinny taped coins to where the beaters hit to make them have more of a clicky attack. Phils double vocal sound I believe is that Dave Lee Roth type double screaming (Roth can sing). Never heard anyone explain how they do that.
Hello Bethany! I'd like to tell you I much appreciate your work! Such passion! Such joy! It's contagious! Thanks a lot! May I offer some suggestions for future analysis? - Powerwolf: German band of power metal. Their vocalist, Attila, has an excellent voice. Any music would be a good choice. - Insomnium: Finnish band of melodic death metal. My favorite music is "heart like a grave", but their repertoire it's excellent! It's interesting take a time to read the comments section. I don't believe you'll find a negative comment. - Iron Maiden: you already produced analysis of them. Their vocalist, Bruce Dickinson, it's now 66 years old and still has a powerful voice, even after a cancerous tumor at the back of his tongue. Hint: search youtube for "Iron Maiden - Alexander The Great / Melbourne 2024 Night 2". Bonus: nice guitar solos and a history lesson!
Pantera loves triplets, I think that's what you're picking up in the intro. The drums, the bass, and sometimes the lead guitar inject the triplets in there. It's what first attracted me to the band.
I'm not sure why but when I heard this I immediately Thought of Type O Negative cause Peter Steele the lead singer/bassist for Type O was really good friends with Dime and the song Halloween in heaven off their album Dead Again is actually about dime even though he is never actually mentioned in the song. R.I.P Dime and Peter🖤💚
they do a lot of polyrhythms that go past the bar and have to resolve in their older stuff. i think thats a 6/4 over a 4/4, but idk. the songs primal concrete sledge, domination, no good, and live in a hole all have polyrhythms both just on drums and shared between the rhythm section and dimebags riffs. live in a hole starts off with a big example of it. it isnt danny carey level stuff, but it was fun back in those days.
That word you were searching for Bethany was "Groooooove"! Pantera took the pace, power and riffs of Thrash Metaland sprinkled a massive burst of their Texas ZZ Top style groove to create a genre known as Groovecore. I can tell you how powerful they were live as I was lucky enough to see them twice back in the 90s. It was an outrageous, incredible, exhausting, exhilarating and above all VISCERAL experience. Their mosh pits were brutal but BRILLIANT! For the best example of Phil Anselmo's full outstanding vocal range, and the best solo of the whole 1990s from Dime, check out Cemetary Gates please. Pretty please. With a cherry on top. 😉😆😀
This is one of my favorites from Cowboys From Hell the opening with the machine gun tempo is amazing and Phil Anselmo's vocals are insane that part where he switched from his regular voice and back up to that higher register was crazy heresy is another one where he goes up high and I'm pretty sure there are other tracks as well sadly he abused his voice so he had to change his style but his voice still was powerful he just didn't have a high range anymore
Don't think you've reacted to their song Domination, especially the live in Moscow version. Vocally, not Phil's best, but the energy at that time and Dimebag on the guitar is second to none, that breakdown with the guitar... absolute fire.
Great stuff! Now when fall is here I would like you to react OPETH - BLEAK. It's kind of long song but when melody grab you it doesn't matter. Singer is like an angel (or demon) and I think you would love to hear that voice (+the rest of the masterpiece).
Gooooood moooorning Bethany 💝,Phil Anselmo have a great and powerful Voice, alternate the growl/acute in simoultaneosly, i Hope my English Is correct ....ciaoooo from Taranto 🏄♂️⛱️☀️ ITALIA 🇮🇹 thanx 🌹

A reaction to anything other than Cemetery Gates or Walk is a welcome surprise.
this is back when Phil could still sing
That "drilling" sound is the bass playing the octave note with a pick. It's also unison with the ride bell of the drums :)

Octave up picked bass and cymbal bell..
That’s exactly what I was going to say too. Good catch!!

If you decide to do another Pantera song, "This Love" has many dynamics.. both in Phil's voice and overall in the song.
That is a solid choice. Seconded.
Be mindful to find a full album version, not the cut down music video version.
This love, but the studio version cuz the videos remove critical musical elements

The backstage Houston Texas is a decent live performance for this song. Also one of the few good live performances of cemetery gates. Imo.
Watch the live video of Pantera playing "Domination" all grunge voice and killer drums.
WHY!!!??? You know damn well she isn't ready for that!
@@patrickbateman7369 She will never be a true MetalHead if she stays in her comfort zone...lol.
@@RedPillLife1966 One of my all time favorite live videos! Phil kills it and Dime lights it up as only he can 🤘
RIP Abbott brothers 🙏
@@palladinodessa8988 In Russia no less
@@RedPillLife1966 Even more epic!!!
Bethany you're a metalhead hahaha ❤️
9:20 & 14:10 are indeed little guitar overdubs with a Digitech Whammy-pedal, like 14:53. Classic Dimebag 🙂
So there's a live version from Joe's Garage in Ft. Worth Texas back in January of 90..if you look that up you will see them in their prime 👊
If you want a really unique version of Phil's voice, check out "En Minor" Live at the Orpheum Theater. "Dead Can't Dance" starts at 24:05
Hello Bethany!
It's
interesting take a time to read the comments section.
Oh man.. this song brought back memories of Highschool.. I'm old xD
Highschool lol....
This was in my early 20's
Yeah I'm old
Because Pantera was only a single guitar metal band, Rex plays bass way more like a second guitarist than some other bass players do.
Hi !! you need hear Pantera - This Love (Official Music Video).
PANTERA!
some 90s games did indeed try to mimic Pantera , particularly Doom from '93
Pantera loves triplets, I think that's what you're picking up in the intro.
Phil trying to be like Halford.
Bell of ride playing 1/8s along with kicks playing triplets.
Don't think you've reacted to their song Domination, especially the live in Moscow version. Vocally, not Phil's best, but the energy at that time and Dimebag on the guitar is second to none, that breakdown with the guitar... absolute fire.
It's nine-plets that guitar plays in the beginning.
Rex the bass player screams along with him. Very good harmonizer.
Awesome watching A woman actually listen to this and not turn her nose up and "Eeeewww" at it! If only there were more like you😊 Great Job! Peace 🕊️☮️♾️😎
