I agree that you need to watch Domination from Moscow. 1.6 million people at least! Dime and Vinnie were longtime friends of mine, even before Phil came along. Darrell introduced me to Phil while playing beer bong at The Basement before they opened one night. Picked Phil’s head up from the bar by his hair and made him say hi. I was a local rock/metal radio DJ. Dime let go of his hair, and Phil face planted back onto the bar. Darrell was the nicest person ever. They gave me their lp first to play on air. The tour with which they stopped in Moscow, my friend from ZROCK, MADD Maxx, who didn’t drink or do drugs, was brought along simply to tend to Phil. He’d make sure Phil’s partying didn’t kill him. He’d get him to bed in the hotel, safe and sound, and then early morning would go see the sights of wherever they were. He’d go back to the hotel in time to get Phil up to get ready for the nights show. What a job! Free tour of the world!

Certainly not a song I would choose to showcase Vinnie but it absolutely does showcase how he was absolute support for his brother Dime. He was like Ringo in that regard...the song (and my very talented brother) come first.
And that's what is happening here. His brother came up with a very simple but absolutely rocking riff so Vinny was like "I'm gonna deliver something simple but rocking". And those 2 really do play well off each other.

Vulgar Display of Power is their “second” album of this style of music. They started out as a “glam” metal band but decided to switch up to this “groove” metal sound and thus the genre was born. Cowboys From Hell is the first incarnation of “groove” metal from them and you should start their to see how it’s progressed 🤘🏻💥🔥🙏🏻💯

The classic Vinnie setup of the early to mid 1990's. Neumann Tackified football gloves (thumbless), playing with the butt end of the sticks, Remo Falam K kevlar head on the snare batter,Drums triggered(except sometimes the snare drum was also mic'd),black heads on the bottom of the overhead toms,Danmar wood beaters w/ Danmar impact pads, 14x14,15x15,18x18 toms,24x24 (2) kicks ,8x14 snare...and sat super low on the drum seat, always had a bandana on,had simmons pads (2 to the left of his main hi hat and one mounted flat above his right kick drum by his ride cymbal) they were covered with danmar impact pads on the striking surface. He used them to trigger the a sampled cross stick sound effect and a sampled cabasa sound effect for the song This Love

I've never really gotten into them, but this is a great song. And it's a great song for sniffing out a weak ensemble. There's so much space in this song, it hits harder as a result, and it's deceptively hard to play if you don't have good pocket.

Pantera is a master class in how to bring groove to metal - and influenced so many bands to come. The way the drums support the guitar groove is on point, punches where it's needed, and space where the guitars need to be the star.

Vinnie Paul was an absolute monster on the drums. That ending wasn't drumming it was THUNDER! I've been in the middle of their mosh pit and live, he makes you bounce and rebound and vibrate, it's A VISCERAL experience. They damn near killed me both times, an first I still had Megadeth to survive lol. I loved every bit of it. Cemetery Gates is amazing, Mouth For War, Floods, 5 Minutes Alone all awesome too, for starters lol

Thank you Andrew for going down the Pantera rabbit hole. I was in high school 1990-1994. I saw Pantera for the first time in high school at the Aragon Ballroom in Chicago. My second time seeing them was at the Aragon again after Far Beyond Driven dropped. The first song they played off that album was Strenght Beyond Strenght. It blasted our faces off. Check it out! Also, counterpoint to that is 25 Years from the same album. Sick groovey song. Do it!

Pantera 96 in Melbourne was to this day the most powerful display of live playing I have ever seen, they were ludicrously tight, Vin played for 100 mins absolutely note perfect and played with such intensity and control. His playing I always respected as well thought out, he had power to burn and wrote his parts very musically for the style of music and they were always proud to be groove metal. RIP Vin and Dime two of the best to ever do this type of music.

I didn't get into Pantera either until just before Dimebags death (RIP) but throw a dart at a list of their songs and it's going to land on a banger. As for their recording, one interesting tidbit is part of Dimebags signature sound was his guitar was tuned a few cents sharp. Meaning if he played a C it wouldn't be an C but slightly higher without getting near a C#, which gave his guitar that sort of buzzsaw tone. They would also typically scoop all the mids while boosting the highs and lows.

The simple fact that there is no rhythm guitar is that there is no second guitar player in the band. Dimebag Darrell is the only guitar player. You have Vinnie Paul on drums, Rex Brown on bass guitar, Dimebag Darrell on guitar and Phil Anselmo on vocals. The fact that PanterA only plays the available instruments and does not overdub the guitar is indeed great!

I have been blessed to have seen them multiple times live, prior to them "making it big" just shortly after they recorded Cowboys from Hell. Might I STRONGLY suggest you check out their 1st released single??? The title track Cowboys From Hell... it truly is its own masterpiece. Along with many of the tracks from that album... Psyhco Holiday, Domination, Cemetary Gates which is a brief departure from the rest of the album. Cowboys "tour" the first words when they got on stage... our stage is YOUR stage have a blast and F'n awesome time. The fact that you and many others keep the memory of the bands founding members is truly amazing and wonderful to say the absolute least.

Much as I appreciate all the wall-of-sound layering, inevitably I will always choose simpler, over complex. One of the reasons I love Punk/Hardcore, is because of its simplicity (aside from the difficulty of playing that fast), and you can (usually) easily pick out bass vs guitar.

"Walk" is basically the theme song that would play in my head if I was an angry kaiju...just walking through town kickin' over buildings and talking mad s*** while doing it.

PanterA was founded in the early 80's. They started as a Glamrock style band. They released 3 Glamrock style albums with Terry Glaze on vocals. The album "Metal Magic" was released in 1983, the album "Projects In The Jungle" was released in 1984 and the album "I am The Night" was released in 1985. Terry Glaze left the band in 1987 and was replaced by Phil Anselmo. With Phil Anselmo in the band the sound of the band started to change and became more metal oriented. The next album with Phil on vocals was "Power Metal" released in 1988. This album already sounded more Metal. In 1990 PanterA became more famous in the Metal circuit by releasing the Album "Cowboys From Hell" and the "new style PanterA" was born. After this album the sound of each new album became heavier and more aggressive. Vulgar Display Of Power was released in 1992. In 1994 the album "Far Beyond Driven" was released, in 1996 the album "The great Southern Trendkill" was released and in 2000 the last album "Reinventing The Steel" was released. Due to issues within the band, PanterA finally stopped in 2003. The brothers Dime and Vinnie Abboth then founded their new band Damageplan.

Great callout on the lack of overdubbed guitars during the solo. This doesn't happen on every track on this album or the previous album but was a lot more frequent across the subsequent albums. Apparently this was inspired a lot by Van Halen, who Darrel (guitar) and Vinnie Paul (drums) and Darrell (guitar) were understandably big fans of as brothers like Eddie and Alex. Rex Brown is an under appreciated bassist and some of his grooves under the solos are among my all time favourites. Check out I'm Broken and 5 Minutes Alone

When you say minimalist, then pull out the bass line when Dime does his solo ... album title rings true, "Vulgar Display of Power" :)

@AndrewRooneyDrums Who knew that 90's Kiwi kids, and 90's kids from Iowa, in good ol' Merica, would've had sorta similar-ish adolescent experiences during our upbringing..🤨 Curious...🤔 Hahaha..

Vinnie Paul got asked about BECOMING more than any other track. It's also a song that NEVER left the Pantera setlist.

When slips into the half time groove, things get real heavy real quick Kind of reminds me of Tommy Aldridge, hard hitting and always the perfect fills. Not super flashy, but just right for the song. I'll take groove over flash every time.

Rex basically mirrors Dimebag's guitar on the bass. He's doing double duty, playing rhythm and laying the bass down.

The people are going to want you to do live domination, Cemetery gates, 5 minutes alone, floods, but you should do a new level
