I have heard Jesus Christ Surfer Star, the soul version, the Jack Black as Herod, seen Neely and Anderson in the revival tour, heard the original cast recording when it came out, love Minchin's Judas, listened to the Austrian and Spanish versions and suffered through John Legend's lackluster Jesus, so I am very happy to find the JCS Zone.

I was there at Hollywood Bowl September 25 1971 . . 13 years young . . '8-/
OMG, i had this on 8-track...talking about bringing back high school memories.
Great service - Keny Whitright and I were Showco Sound crew when we took the production to Germany and The Netherlands in January-March 1972. I will check the original program I have for more details but Dane Donahue and Tyrone Bragg and Joyce Gordon filled the leads with a great chorus filling in all other parts - Kirby Wyatt was the lighting and stage designer and went on to a great career with Showco. I had this album until the 80's when my son took it to a party and lost it - great memories revived.

I'm surprised how good this is considering it was recorded in 12hrs. Perhaps a testament to the talent involved. The guy playing Judas sounds like one of The Four Tops.

Unusual to hear to hear a female Simon... I agree with CTR that there is a lazy element in places but there is still a lot of high energy here - especially in The Last Supper, a part I don't usually listen to much.

Wow! I had heard of this, but never have been able to listen to it until now. Very nice; I really enjoy the overall tone of the performances. The early 70s! Get a group together and go out on tour! The mania of that time re JCS reminds me of how the United States went "HMS Pinafore" crazy in the late 1800s and had dozens of unauthorized productions playing all over the country...at one time there were five unauthorized productions going in NY at the same time. Popular will always find those who will fill a need. This was very well done; maybe that's why they let it occur. Thank you so much for sharing it.

Thee Truth is that only The Devil Itself, Evil Ones, had wanted Jesus of Nazareth, a son of Joseph The Carpenter, to not be Crucified and had wanted Jesus Christ the Nazarene, to Not Die.

А несанкционка в некоторых местах лучше оригинала. Слушал, сравнивая голоса исполнителей. Нестройная разноголосица апостолов была ближе к истине. Они ж действительно все были разными людьми.
А тембры, интонации голосов чётко показывали на характер и нрав его владельца.
Ария Ирода вообще бесподобна. Голосом передать всю сволочность своей натуры. Ай, браво! Авторам этой записи.
Ну и конечно авторам особое спасибо. Устроили по всей США оргию опер в современной обработке и оранжировке. Так сказать приобщали молодежь к мировому, культурному достоянию.
Но в целом копия всегда хуже оригинала.

Ещё раз подумай хорошенько. Копия потому и называется копией, что она сделана на подобии оригинала. Оригинала!! А не копии.
Да, ну если послушать,как исполнял свой концерт для ф- но с окестром Пётр Ильч Чайковский в Карнеги Холле, в своем оригинальном изложении и сравнить, как его исполнил Иван Клиберн в Московской консерватории, на конкурсе, то становится понятным,что музыка это не застывшее в масле искусство,а живое воплощение движения вечности в звуке,подумай...

Гении рождаются единицами и их творения это верх всего. Ну, а для посредственности, конечно нет пределов в совершенстве. Поэтому и появляются всякие ню-ши, ксю-ши и прочий хапающий зверинец во всех областях творчества людей.

Так вот,в музыке понятие копия обсурдно, т.к, оно имеет место,(употребляется) лишь только в музыкальной индустрии.Я сознательно не поставил кавычки в первом обсуждении...что касаемо Мусорского, его авторские редакции оперы "Борис Годунов",вообще не исполняются,а только редакции Римского- Корсакого, и сводная редакция П.А. Ламма.Так,что гений Мусоркого,от этих редакций оригинального изложения не пострадал, лишь только возвысился в вечности.В части Айвазовского,возможно есть копии (каляки- маляки) его шедевров,но я же сказал: музыка это искусство не застывшее в масле произведение,подумай ещё раз хорошенько ☝
