Came across this having just seen an excellent local production of JCS. Never heard Gillan singing this - but oh boy! Talk about understanding the assignment! Absolute perfection, just as he was at his peak with Deep Purple. I remember being blown away the first time I heard Child in Time. For him his falsetto is just part of his natural voice and he uses it to express emotion, not as a "look at what I can do" moment like so many do. Brilliant. Blows established Broadway performers out of the water.
During the famous 'whyyyyyyy' high note of the song, Gillan's voice seems to surpass straightforward note reaching and actually becomes like a child's cry, in that way that when a baby or child is so emotional, their cries overwhelm them and their voice, even if it gives them a temporary sore throat, surpasses a healthy vocal expression. That's why I think Gillan's interpretation will always be the greatest, he seemed to stretch his voice to the great beyond and elicit the emotion of someone overwhelmed by the dread of what they are led to believe they must do. He also does an incredible job of the section with the lyrics 'Right, I'll die, just watch me die, see how I die' - he manages to balance anger, pride and pleading all in one as he consigns himself to his fate from God. You can hear his fear turn to anger and resoluteness, then pride and almost vengefulness as he tells god he'll face death, but that God better be prepared to watch his son die. A fantastic job of expressing Jesus's grappling of the human confines and trying to face with courage the ultimate sacrifice, of one's life for a cause.
I grew up listening to this album, and I couldn't have put it better myself. Such an exquisite emotional performance, summed up using only his voice. Nobody else I've seen or heard has come close, including Ted Neely.
The Magnificent interpretation of Ian Gillan's portrayal of Christ in the Garden of Gethsemane was Extremely well-articulated. Thank you. In addition I think it's interesting to note that in the biblical account of Gethsemane, this Christ was in such a mental turmoil and an emotional self struggle pushing himself he collapsed to the ground actually causing droplets of blood in his sweat. This agonizing intensity and anguish continued to increase to the point where he fully collapsed prostrate immovable upon the dirt. This struggle was so intense God his father had to dispatcha Holy Angel to strengthen him to continue the process. The rest is history.

I saw Ian Gillan in the London production in the 70’s when I was a kid and I’ve been obsessed with this musical ever since. So powerful, so many great songs.
Ian Gillan has never appeared in the theatre production. As per his own statements he was too busy with his band to even consider theatre or cinema appearances in JCS.
Could Ian Gillian be ANY more talented? The voice of Deep Purple, as well as that brief stint in Black Sabbath, the solo career, and other projects...the ultimate, consummate rock singer!! Those high notes still gives me chills...and the ORIGINAL Jesus in this masterpiece!!
I have early onset dementia.(I'm 61 years old). I can barely walk due to bad knees. Put yourself in my situation, and re listen to the lyrics. Welcome to my life. This is in no way a complaint. I've had a helluva ride.
2024 and just heard this version for the first time. Awesome!! I always loved JCS, ever since it was released. Seen it a couple of times, in Sweden and Italy. Nobody does this better than Ian Gillan!
I am always astounded by Gillan's performance here. It's too bad a better version either doesn't exist or You Tube has no other recording-- when the song and his lips go awry, at the pinnacle of the song, it's just distracting. I just read today that Gillan was asked to play Jesus in the film version, but insisted if he joined the cast that his band receive a salary too, as they would have to stop touring. Ted Neely was chosen instead. I wonder what trajectory Ian Gillan's life would have taken if he had starred in the film?? Although Neely seemed born the play the role, and was magnificent!! In any case, Ian is a stellar musician in every sense of the word. Peace to all in 2023.. 🕊🕊🕊
It's a human story, the suffering of a man. There is no question of Jesus' humanity. The tragedy is all too human. The big question is divinity. Was he divine ? Personally I doubt it. Undoubtedly Jesus had his fans, but just because people say things like Eric Clapton is God, it doesn't mean that three days after his future death, Eric Clapton will appear to his bereft fans in a locked room. Or maybe....
I'm over 50 now, but I first heard the original JCS album when my mom bought the record in the 70s. It was my first introduction to music. Became a radio host of rock music in my 30s. Gillan's voice sounded so pure in my tender years. In my book nobody could top him, especially those who came after him in the 90s and 00s. He was the voice of Jesus, my personal superstar and savior. I always listen to that album every Easter.
I played this album in my living room growing up on my parents stereo console. It brings back precious memories ✨️ 💖 I must of listened to both LPS about a thousand times!!!
Finally saw JCS at theatre last night- it was incredible. The guy who sang this was amazing- goosebumps! But I always return to this version- I don’t think it can be beaten. 🤩
I saw JCS for the first time about a month ago, and I only really knew the titular song. And this song wowed me like maybe no other musical theater song has.
Grew up singing this entire rock opera as I ran and danced around my living room... this song is surely the height of the show. As a kid I took Gillan's singing for granted.. today I realize just what perfection it is.
Gives me goosebumps. The original London cast recording is one of the greatest albums of all time, among all genres, and is a masterpiece. And to think that Andrew Lloyd Webber wrote the music when he was only 16. Insane
Mr Gillan, your portrayal of Jesus is, in my opinion, the greatest vocal performance in rock history. I was an adolescent when Superstar was released, and I was studying hard to become a professional singer/songwriter/guitarist. Your Jesus forever changed my vision of what a singer should be. I spent the rest of my life trying to be you. Although I failed at ever being one tenth of what you are, I did enjoy a couple of decades as a small-time nightclub player and singer. Thank you for giving me something to aspire to. I am now dying of cancer, so I can safely say that you have been my hero for my lifetime. I hope to one day meet you on the other side. ...many years from now.

It seems like no one who replicated this understood why the high g note works. They just do a falsetto and show off. The note itself isn't the key ingredient, it's the raw passion with which it's delivered.
Actually in singing, passion is the enemy of high notes. The key is to look and sound passionate. But if you feel that passion the note will go SPLAT all over the place. Just look at everyone in Lindsay Ellis' video who has veins in their necks. If your neck is tense, there's NO way that note is coming out. But plenty have tried to force it. Nils Isberg hit the nail on the head, this is almost a whistle tone. No idea how he's making it. But it sure is amazing.
I bought this double album probably on the recommendation of a friend back when I was in high school and already a big Deep Purple fan. Ian Gillian's singing is just tremendous so this being a rock opera totally drew me in. Listening to this double album countless times on my head phones I am sure. Gillian's presentation still gives me chills, especially that scream.
So fabulous! I remember listening to this on a small record player in my sister's bedroom! Loved it, and had no idea how Ian Gillan was to be such a voice in the future. His voice is wonderful!

A Brilliant performance, no wonder Tim Rice and Andrew Lloyd Webber wanted Ian for the voice of Jesus, every word heard clearly... A showstopping performance .....
I've waited 50 years to see footage of Ian singing this. Best track from the rock opera and the best singer in the world singing it. A little out of sync in parts but I can live with that.
I was probably about 5 years old when my dad turned me on to this album... I haven't listened to it in probably 20 years and I can still sing the entire Opera every part every word... the greatest body of work I've ever heard
for more Gillan perfection pls listen to his vocal in the 1969 version of Jon Lord's concerto. Here I think he presents the quintessential male vocalist!
I would strongly recommend that you listen to the whole original version. It is easily available (I suspect that you will have done so by now) I love rock, and IMO this is the only proper rock version, later versions were softened and made more "poppie", a great mistake IMO. let me know what you thought of the original version complete.
Absolutely magnificent. Before, i thought that Ian never sang "i only want to say" alive. All other versions are far away from Ian's original. Ian is phrasing, his voice is bright, he hits the stratosphere (all cover versions do not hit the high notes). The tembre of Ian goes straight into the soul. Outstanding. Jesus would love it, no doubt. When You listen to Ian, You feel it all deeply, in the begining of the song he translates the super emotion with first high notes, than all the way he hold your feeling of heart, and You know that it is the trueth. No other cover version of anybody, translates this feeling of trueth and the real emotions and mood of this epic. Ian Gillan is above than number 1. Totally mind blowing. Lets wish Ian golden health and work on never stop.
also note that Ian does not over act throughout. it is very controlled. another point and maybe THEE most impressive aspect of this performance and Ian"s skill overall is his SEEMLESS transitions between the different vocal chambers of chest, head and falsetto voice!!!

Those high notes are easy if you do it right and shouldn't cause a sore throat
I Only Want To Say that Ian Gillan is not only the voice of Jesus Christ Superstar, and but also, the voice of Rock and Roll.
I agree 💙 I love Ian!!!
Glenn Hughes is The Voice of Rock! Ok, i love Gillan too 😊

Deep Purple."
"Сам Гиллан рассказал об этом так: «Я думал об этом не более получаса. Я состоял в Deep Purple - группе, в которой всегда мечтал играть. И не собирался рисковать ради выступлений в Вест-Энде или 12 недель съёмок фильма."
Самое лучшее исполненин!!! Браво!!!
OMG what a voice! No one but Ian could do this role justice!!!❤️
One of the most important lessons in vocal styling EVER, Ian Gillan ruled every note he ever sang! Simple truth. Argue THAT!
I saw Ian Gillan in the London production in the 70’s when I was a kid and I’ve been obsessed with this musical ever since. So powerful, so many great songs.
Wow this has stuck with me from my childhood but to have been their is amazing. I'm jealous lol ✌️❤
me too,was on a schooltrip to London
Ian Gillan has never appeared in the theatre production. As per his own statements he was too busy with his band to even consider theatre or cinema appearances in JCS.
Could Ian Gillian be ANY more talented? The voice of Deep Purple, as well as that brief stint in Black Sabbath, the solo career, and other projects...the ultimate, consummate rock singer!! Those high notes still gives me chills...and the ORIGINAL Jesus in this masterpiece!!
He was a legend and were lucky having listened to him

2024 and just heard this version for the first time. Awesome!! I always loved JCS, ever since it was released. Seen it a couple of times, in Sweden and Italy. Nobody does this better than Ian Gillan!
You should listen to Camilo Sesto's version
Ted Neely
What a talent! Does it so effortless…beautiful
Still makes me cry, heard this when I was 12.. 60 years now.. an atheist... but this opera rock, runs through my veins!!!
It’s indeed a musical for athiests
@@Jumanjini I am atheist and I love it. What set you off?
It's a human story, the suffering of a man. There is no question of Jesus' humanity. The tragedy is all too human.
The big question is divinity. Was he divine ? Personally I doubt it. Undoubtedly Jesus had his fans, but just because people say things like Eric Clapton is God, it doesn't mean that three days after his future death, Eric Clapton will appear to his bereft fans in a locked room.
Or maybe....
Makes me cry every time
I miss my grandma... I remember her saying that she loved this song🥀...
The ONLY Jesus is Ian Gillan!
Ted is not bad vocally, but Ian sung it like telling a story, more soulful...
Ian Gillian crushes it! You cannot portray Jesus Christ this emotionally without a change. God bless you, Ian, and bless all of you.
Fantastic....Ian is the voice.....
I remember 70s.first time listening this.I was 8 yo, and can't stop admire all my life..... masterpiece!!!!!Viva. Maestro Gillan!!!!!!!
Hearing this brings tears to my eyes...seeing the absolute master Ian Gillan perform it blew me away...
Where did you see that?
I remember this expressive voice from the original album I purchased in the 1970s. Still the best of them all. Blessings.
Grew up singing this entire rock opera as I ran and danced around my living room... this song is surely the height of the show. As a kid I took Gillan's singing for granted.. today I realize just what perfection it is.

Beautifully said!
In early 70's Ian Gillan was unbeatable performer. Huge voice of rock.
Sweet Child in Time
That was called 'Child In Time", not the same song.
There is nothing bad anyone can say about this song. It’s pure perfection!
I like it up to the tears this Ian interpretation, I am 60 years old now. My favorite singer.
Most assuredly some of the best screams in Ian Gillan's illustrious career. Especially where he screams "why should I die,"
Pure expression and emotion. This type of singing is completely lost on soulless performers seeking wealth and fame. His performance changed my life.
Gives me goosebumps. The original London cast recording is one of the greatest albums of all time, among all genres, and is a masterpiece. And to think that Andrew Lloyd Webber wrote the music when he was only 16. Insane
The Australian cast from '72 comes close, with John English and Trevor white

Ian Gillan☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆
One of the most beautiful pieces of music I have ever heard!
It seems like no one who replicated this understood why the high g note works. They just do a falsetto and show off. The note itself isn't the key ingredient, it's the raw passion with which it's delivered.
ThejollyFrenchman BINGO!
BINGO!
The amazing thing is that his high G isn't just a G, his vibrato is so wide that it sounds like he's almost doing a tremolo between a G and a B-flat!!
@@nilsisberg5445 Haha nice one!
One of the finest vocal performances in the history of Rock.
Absolutely it is wonderful praise and witness to Jesus x

Ye gods. This is the first time I've heard Gillan's version. Absolutely breathtaking.
He is definitely the best singing the part of Jesus. I've heard many others, but Ian sings with the most conviction and passion.
for more Gillan perfection pls listen to his vocal in the 1969 version of Jon Lord's concerto. Here I think he presents the quintessential male vocalist!
I would strongly recommend that you listen to the whole original version. It is easily available (I suspect that you will have done so by now)
I love rock, and IMO this is the only proper rock version, later versions were softened and made more "poppie", a great mistake IMO.
let me know what you thought of the original version complete.
Damn he hits that high G effortlessly. Beautiful.
