Many singers could perform this song with fantastic vocals but I don't know how anyone could deliver the raw beauty that I hear in her voice. It's beyond just fantastic.
This will be forever HER song..I don't care WHO sings it
She has the pathos and sadness. In addition to quality vocal prowess.
Helen reddy put it on mainstream
The director gave a private screening to Pope Paul VI. The pope loved the movie and said this song in particular had an "inspired beauty."
@@countrybunk62She did but Helen Reddy sang the words with no feeling behind it. Ms. Elliman put her heart into it. Best ever.
Many singers have covered this song but Yvonne Elliman will always be miles above the rest. So beautiful.
I agree, miles and miles above ! heavenly
Sara Bareilles the only one who comes close!!
Yvonne Elliman's singing voice speaks for itself. Nothing more to say.
@@frankievalentine6112was just going to say, dead heat. 😊
It's always hard to surpass the original. But I suggest you lookup Kate Ceberano.
She sings every word as if her life depends on it. Can't beat authenticity
If this doesn't give you goosebumps you have passed away. Yvonne has the voice of an angel and the song itself is beyond beautiful.
no goosebumps here, but a lump in my throat and tears
This is Yvonne's song, forever.
I'm 17 and just discovering this amazing movie!!!! phenomenal beyond words :)
I envy you. The firs time is the best.
@@grumpy1616 I’m yet to recover from it haha
The beauty of being young and beginning to discover the amazing things that humans did at their best.
Good for to you!
This is the true center of this film. It's a song about a person on the verge of a profound spiritual experience, who interprets her feelings in terms of an old language of the heart, soon to be replaced by a new one.
It's the real essence of the song ... sinner redeemed into a power of grace and humility. Beautiful
Nicely put!
Hermoso pesamiento,y será así,escrito está.
I love how you put that.
Fifty-one years later, this still holds up.
The story of Jesus and Mary Magdeline is the most powerful story of love I've ever heard. And Yvonne's portrayal of Mary is perfection.
Greatest vocal of this song, ever. No one captures the emotion of despair and Love like Yvonne ❤
I was in my early twenties when this played all over. I’m not Christian; in fact, I’m an atheist. But her voice singing this song haunts me and reminds me of the early Seventies and my youth.
You mean, you're not even agnostic???😢
I can't wrap my brain around the thought of a finite end to everything upon our deaths... I definitely believe in something after this because I've had "experiences". I'm not crazy, by any means. The experiences I've had absolutely do defy logic and are inexplicable. But they occurred nonetheless.
I hope the energy and frequencies can speak to your cells in abundance, showing you another way. Imagine a source that's greater and larger than anything we can conceive while simultaneously being the smallest quantifiable essence; the grid to our reality.
@@jenniferlloyd9574 Why be agnostic when one can be an atheist? If there’s no proof of a god or God, and cannot be real proof, how could I be agnostic? To me, any “experiences” of an afterlife are the function of a dying brain. I hope I’m wrong about that, but as far as I know - and no one who’s actually died came back - this life is it. We can’t conceive of not being here. But when I’ve had a medical procedure (a colonoscopy, for instance), that period of time in which I was under anesthesia was completely blank. Only the going under and then the recovery period existed. Then again, we’re not dead when we’re under anesthesia, so maybe death is very different and we have some awareness after we die.
Just say if your real Jesus show me. Nothing to lose.
@@jenniferlloyd9574 I thought I’d replied to you. No, I’m an atheist and fine with thinking that once we die, that’s the end. I believe that our brains give us “experiences” when we’re near death, to ease our anxieties. I’d love to believe that after death we meet our loved ones who preceded us in death, but I can’t believe that. If I’m wrong, great!
Same. Haunting memories.
Her voice though, not only is she absolutely gorgeous her voice is just out of this world, I really wish I could sound like her
I'll never understand why she couldn't make it as a singer. She had a couple of hits. Then that was it.
@@charlesbeausejour1902 she did pretty good she toured w Eric Clapton as well she left on her own cuz she wanted a family at least she wasn't a one hit wonder like a lot of them there's a lot of female singers who totally disappeared
@@James-uu4koit makes sense that she toured with Clapton, she was married to an RSO executive for a long time
@@charlesbeausejour1902 To me she did make it as a singer. A big song from Saturday Night Fever as well as this. She has other hits besides.

Can we take a sec to appreciate the bass work in this recording. My god.
haha
Every damn time I listen, it still brings me to tears !!
Just so beautiful!!
A mi también. Siempre.
A very moving rendition, in fact , the best
The first time I heard this in the movie theater, it gave me goosebumps.
This song makes me cry...eversince i first listened to it. Didn't know it came out when i came out too...50 years ago.
It's impossible to remain dry-eyed.
When ALW first heard Yvonne sing he went up to her and said youre my Mary.
I am not surprised
Yvonne you are the wisest choice to sing this song...
Beautiful song Beautiful voice from a Beautiful Woman I could listen to her forever
She is exceptional, marvelous, compassionate, soulful, sincere, beautiful.
So soulful, the way she delivers those lyrics, iconic.
This wonderful movie still the best in all Jesus Christ Superstar concert I’ve seen even in this year 2024!.Thanks for showing!
Just beautiful.
What a song!! Yvonne Elliman is just perfect!
Maybe this is the best musical I ever saw!
My elder brothers brought home this JesusChrist Superstar record. I guess I was 6 years old when heard this dramatic opera on the Stromberg Carlson turntable. Without a doubt, Yvonne Elliman performance was the best in the vynil record. Thanks a lot for uploading this incredible video. Greetings from Mexico City...
I hate musicals, Broadway shows and the like but bought the album purely for this song.
I still know all the words
Yvonne Elliman sang this song like how Mary Magdalene would have sung it
Mary Magdalene wasnt romantically in love with Yeshua.
Mary......the sister of Lazarus was.
I have always loved this song! This beautiful woman has a wonderful voice and a very expressional face
All these years... all these years... still takes my breath away. 💗💖💗
Beautiful voice, great performance by Yvonne Elliman.
I was 20 when this Movie came out. I had heard about the play a year before it did. The movie really got to me. I watched it many times, along with various plays.
Yvonne delivers so much emotion in this classic song!
Un f'n believable-- truly
She credits director Norman jewison as well for the way she portrayed the song her movements
51 years later , remember the moment of hearing this song for the first time in the Byron and Carlyle movie theater, Miami Beach
Legendary unforgettable touches the heart and soul of listener very SOULFUL
goosebumps ........absolute briliant sound melody and voice
She has a great voice. She’s back up vocals on Clapton’s Slow Hand album.
She toured with him from 1974 to 1977 she's on the song I shot the sheriff as well
Yes the voice of a angel . I still have the original Jesus Christ super star album
Before it was a show? The one with a different Judas? I never heard it. I just always listen to the movie soundtrack album. I can't imagine anyone being better than Carl Anderson as Judas.
@@RayFromLUCKYSHADOW absolutely 💯 Ted Needly as Jesus . Yes l have the old one here in Ontario Canada 🇨🇦 oh enjoy 😉
I remember saving up the £4.99 (or was it £4.50 ?) ……..my first double album
Yes me to and still have it .
@ronaldomadrebien7045 yes true 👍 was expensive here too in Canada 🇨🇦
I agree with all of you. No need to say anything else, just listen and see for yourself.
It's really hard not to tear up at 2:40.
Beautiful song and fantastic voice. I saw this musical at the drive in and on screen well over twernty times. And still think Yvonne singing is awesome,
Never fails ! Brings me back to my childhood never tire of this sound track " Jesus Christ Superstar " is the best ! Musical ever 💯 👌 Amen 🙏 .
Your so Rite
Heard this on WGN Roy Leonard show in 1973 and he was blown away, as were thousands of others.
this is always Evonnes song no one else can touch it
People are saying Mel C is better 🙉😂
@@SunflowerPower22 yuck
I have loved this since
childhood.
I love this song of the Bread…, also the singer’s voice is incredible ❤👍
Great movie great song love them so much❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
Best lead vocal I’ve seen in film. Should’ve won best pop vocal female in the Grammys and the academy award for best original song
Unfortunately, it couldn't have won the Academy Award as it's not an original song. It's from the stage production. As for the Grammy's, they don't usually give pop awards to gospel music.
@@magic8ball1982 they have categories for gospel. Just don’t know if it exists in 1973
@@tashkentyIt did. Elvis Presley won 3 Grammys for hid Gospel music.
So meaningful love it always
She sings this so beautifully what a gorgeous girl I just love this am old enough to remember x
I just saw a documentary on this movie. The director said he decided to do this after hearing the original album from the play. But he never mentioned that Yvonne Elliman (Mary Magdeline) and Barry Dennin (Pilate) were also in that play.
I saw another one where one of the actors was talking about Yvonne and how good she was
Yvonne was 19 years old when she was in the original cast of "Jesus Christ Superstar".
Her portrayal of Mary Magdalene is one of the highlights of the show and this song is the reason why.
Her one young voice conveys so many emotions at once, that it simply raises it above most of the other moments in the musical.
I have absolutely no words .. ❤
Delivered in a tasteful, desperate sensuality. Still the best version, IMO.
Exotic, and beautiful. An all-time favorite...
Best version
Absolutely magical!
The best version of a woman singing it.
Anybody can do it like them they are the best forever I say from Venezuela
Beautiful
Wow just wow 🥲
Love Yvonnes voice. So beautiful ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
You can't touch this!!❤❤
I'm embarrassed to say I only knew her for if I can't have you but OMG wow, a much bigger picture now. ❤ Better late than never. ❤
She was on Broadway in this as well got nominated for a golden globe for this movie version and toured with Eric Clapton she also had a few other hit songs I was a big fan of hers

Christ is innocence but what he becomes is Revelation at past present and future. The bane of Mankind
My brother played Jesus in a stage play at a local theatre back in the mid 70's. Mary was played by a woman who became his wife. Her portrayal of this song was as real as it got.
Awe inspiring
So sweet!!!
Amazing.
~LYRICS~
I don't know how to love him
What to do, how to move him
I've been changed, yes really changed
In these past few days
When I've seen myself
I seem like someone else
I don't know how to take this
I don't see why he moves me
He's a man, he's just a man
And I've had so many men before
In very many ways
He's just one more
Should I bring him down?
Should I scream and shout?
Should I speak of love?
Let my feelings out?
I never thought I'd come to this
What's it all about?
Don't you think it's rather funny?
I should be in this position
I'm the one who's always been
So calm, so cool
No lover's fool
Running every show
He scares me so
I never thought I'd come to this
What's it all about?
Yet, if he said he loved me
I'd be lost, I'd be frightened
I couldn't cope, just couldn't cope
I'd turn my head, I'd back away
I wouldn't want to know
He scares me so
I want him so
I love him so
"What is it all about", is the message to all of us ?
The Mystery
Wonderful....
I love this song, because of course there would be women romantically interested in Jesus. How could they not be. This is a portrayal of one such woman and her difficulty dealing with it.
Mary Magdalene wasn't just any women. She was also a religious leader with her own following about the same size as Jesus' at the time.
Well done.
Wahine maikai leo maikai 🌺 ❤️

She made believers of sooo many with this song. d.
