I saw it so often. When I was five, my father played Pontius Pilate. It beat having a baby sitter! I sang backing vocals with Marcia Hines. So many great memories with those actors. A big part of my childhood.
So many wonderful memories, every artist, and every performance was spectacular. And for me, it was a life-changing event, it brings tears to my eyes, hearing it again at the age of 80.
I saw it a total of five times at the Capitol Theatre in Sydney. The first time was the whole original cast and I was completely blown away. My Aus mate who also lives here in the US and I just saw a production of Hamilton in Philadelpha. She also saw the original Superstar cast in Sydney. The way people were reacting to Hamilton - knowing the words andsinging along to the songs, clapping and cheering - made us think that JC Superstar was the Hamilton of the 70s. We didn't clap and cheer but we knew (and still do) know the words to every song.
Do you know if there is a DVD of the original Australian cast with Stevie wright playing the part of Simon and singing the songs of the show❤❤❤. I would like to watch it❤❤❤
Such a Superstar "fledgling" cast... also... Doug Parkinson (King Herod) Stevie Wright (Simon Zealotes) - 11:16 - MASTERFUL performance Michael Caton (Priest) - No you're not dreaming ;-) Reg Livermore (King Herod - Sydney) John Paul Young (Annas) Rory O'Donoghue (Thin Arthur in Aunty Jack - Peter) Saw it at the Palais In Melbourne at just 8 years old - The guitarist on the stack of speakers starting the show - how LOUD it was - Jon English cartwheeling, the lights forming Jesus's face at the end...all etched fondly in my mind 🙂
I saw it! My first professional theatre show. I was around 7 years old. It was a profound experience. I got to play Judas when I was 19 years old, and have played Herod and Annas in subsequent productions. 🥰
For sure, the Ozzie cast recording is the best of the main ones going around back in the day. But I used to imagine a fantasy cast version. How good would it have been to have Jon English, Yvonne Elliman, Ian Gillan, Peter North and Stevie Wright as the headliners in one show? The band and orchestra on this Ozzie recording would be my pick, they sound more enthusiastic than the other recordings.
When this came out i was 7-8 years old and now every time i hear "Superstar" i sing the song we all sang as kids in the school yard: "Jesus Christ Superstar Burnin' down the corner in a motorcar. "Cops come up, we don't care, we got bullet proof underwear". Aahh good times as a kids. Yah can never get it back.
I saw this live in Sydney back when I was 10 years old. in my childs mind I thought John English really did hang him self. Lucky for Australia he didn't.
I saw it the summer of 73/4 in Melbourne and it was less "enunciated" than this overly stagey musical style, and more rocky. I preferred it. A couple of crucial cast changes made a positive impact as well. (Right on Daryl and Ozzie)
A question for anyone who can answer--is this the first version of the story that included "Could We Start Again Please"? It wasn't in the original concept album, but it's in the movie, so I always assumed that it was new for the film, but if this predates the film that's obviously not the case. Was it in the original Broadway show? I don't think it's in that album, although it's heavily abridged so that's not necessarily an indication that it wasn't in the original show
The song was written specifically for the first stage production of Superstar, in this case the 1971 original Broadway cast production. Rice and Webber along with the director felt that there wasn't enough material for the character of Mary Magdalene in the second act so they decided to add an additional song. The song has been part of JCS ever since.
I remember seeing Jon English three times in my youth. I then saw JCS in London two years ago - this was not a touch on the Australian version - there has never been a better Judas.
I think Trevor's performance of Gethsemane here is kinda lackluster when compared to his live performance in 1973. There he is unstopable. But that's just my opinion.

Your father did a good job in that. One of the best Pilates.
Robin was great and brought a gravitas to that role.
cheers for this..best version in my opinion..Jon & Trevor

I was lucky to see this show
Me too
Me too. 12 at the time. Saw it twice after that. An incredible production and do get me started on Jon English.@WilliamKinsey-dx2dn
Or don't get me started.groan
The definitive recording of this rock opera masterpiece. A great deal of credit has to go to producer/ arranger/conductor, Patrick Flynn. Timeless.

Thank you for uploading this version of JCS.
My Mum told me she was a young teenager when the family saw the musical in Sydney.
I had this album, listened to it all my life, feels so familiar - love it! My parents saw this play when I was a kid - huge impact on my life!
We miss you John.
Thankyou. I saw this with my school teacher & 4 other students, in the 1970's.
Incredible!!! 😁👍
The drumming on Heaven on their Minds is masterful. Just listen to the way it drives and frames the song.
I love the drumming. The tempo is a bit hot, but the drums are on fire!
That was my big brother Daniel groves...sadly he passed away suddenly 3 weeks ago today .
He was an insanely talented drummer!
@@revolutionsartistmgmtmgmt5563 You must be proud...what an amazing job
Proud beyond words.
@@revolutionsartistmgmtmgmt5563 🥰
Thank you very much, love this cast a lot
Such a Superstar "fledgling" cast... also...
Doug Parkinson (King Herod)
Stevie Wright (Simon Zealotes) - 11:16 - MASTERFUL performance
Michael Caton (Priest) - No you're not dreaming ;-)
Reg Livermore (King Herod - Sydney)
John Paul Young (Annas)
Rory O'Donoghue (Thin Arthur in Aunty Jack - Peter)

Yes, Brilliant cast.
Just listening to this has lit a fire in me.
Wish l had seen it live.
Jon, Trevor , Michelle (and others) are truly magnificent .

I was in Sydney in 1972 when I first heard this. Still have the cassette
I would love this on CD, it was the best stage show I have seen and I went three times
You can get a live CD version of the 1973 cast when Marcia Hines first joined. It is good, but not as good as this.
Everything Australia does is the best
Love this version ❤
My first album and the only vinyl I kept after my mass sell of in the 80'sand 90's.
Seriously. This is the best version I ever heard. I just wish it was the full album.
You should check out the live album. You can buy/stream it online: www.jesuschristsuperstarzone.com/discography/original-australian-cast-live-1973/
@@JCSZone Cheers mate. Thanks alot!
Yes I like the 1973 Aussie live version. And you get Marcia Hines as Mary.
Best JCS version ever made.

Has to be the best version of the last supper
And interesting actor to be in Chorus, Michael Caton
32:55 I LOVE this bit!
The Australian version is a hell of a lot better than the original British version
Redo this video album again, without the ads
They can't do that. You are using the UA-cam free version. If you want to watch without ads, subscribe to premium subscription
Why on earth 🌎 would you put ads in throughout the album and ruin the flow of an awesome concept album

On at least one occasion he did when the he safely harness failed. Tough guy!

I saw this when I was about 7...my understanding was " Could we start again please" was written for the Australian production?????
Robin Ramsay is excellent
Is that really Marcia Hines singing "I Don’t Know How To Love Him"?
No it's Michele Fawdon. Marcia Hines played Mary on the live album and during the national tour.
I think Trevor's performance of Gethsemane here is kinda lackluster when compared to his live performance in 1973. There he is unstopable. But that's just my opinion.
Michele Fawdon sounds better than Marcia Hines. That was the one let down in the stage recording. I felt Marcia was all over the place with her voice
I like the other one better with Terry Kaff. Better tempo, this seems a bit too fast pace. This is ok
