  • I'm from Scotland and I have worked on the Oil Rigs oot here, lets see how realistic this is, in - STILL WAKES THE DEEP - Episode 6 of my STILL WAKES THE DEEP playthrough.
Still Wakes the Deep is a horror video game developed by The Chinese Room and published by Secret Mode. The story follows an electrician who is trapped on a damaged oil drilling platform, having no way to escape while being pursued by mysterious monsters under harsh weather conditions. American from across the pond here. Playing this game was like reading an awesome horror-thriller book and I was curious about what other people's experiences were so I watched your entire playthrough! I especially enjoyed your reactions and giving insights on how accurate the Rig was!
I just have to ask, there were multiple times during the underwater sections where you said you don't like water, so what prompted you to go work on an offshore oil rig?
And one more question, Are off shore oil riggers particularly superstitious? I grew up (I have family in the Navy) learning how seriously navy men take certain superstitions while at sea. My cousin got chewed out one time for whistling while it was calm out, which is apparently bad luck!
This was fun playthrough to watch and had a good chuckle when you jokingly said that this an average day on an oil rig. But an Oil Rig does feel innately Eldritch, doesn't it? Even without the undersea monstrosity, an Oil Rig is essentially a HUGE needle drawing blood from the Ocean floor's skin. Hat's off to you man for working a job like that!

@vivianphillips1602 thanks for the feedback, was a fun playthrough seeing the similarities with my time offshore :)
You dinna have to go underwater on the rig unless something has gone seriously wrong so it's all good! Haha
Was part of my mechanical apprenticeship that I would being going offshore at some point, so part of the job!
Not much superstition around oil workers (that I know of) but back in the day you wouldn't let women anywhere near boats or rigs haha! Was superstition if a woman set foot on one that the next voyage would have major issues!!
Glad you enjoyed and watched the lot!
      Thanks, 👍👍

I don't know if you watch other people play games, but I've seen a few playthroughs now and one thing that I noticed was that a lot of them couldn't really follow along with the game's explanations for what you were doing in any given chapter. I imagine that you had a bit of a better understanding of how an oil rig works, so was there anything that you didn't understand while playing? What were your thoughts when they were doing things like "flooding the pontoons" and "cutting the rig loose"? Did the reasoning make sense for why they were doing what they were doing?
Also, I find it funny that of all the playthroughs I've seen so far, you were the only one who didn't jump into that one tunnel of flowing water immediately. It had a giant warning sign that said you have to open a flood gate before maintenance can be performed inside--because if you jump in while it's down you could get trapped. Everyone I've seen takes one look, jumps in, and immediately drowns because they get pinned against a closed gate and rushing water. idk why, I just found that funny. Like you were the only one who read the sign and actually listened to it.

Flooding the pontoons was probably to sink the platform a bit to keep it balanced in the sea for when they cut it loose, cutting it loose would be disconnecting the pipes that go into the sea so they could float away from the hell!!
Haha about the signage, we are taught to always read instructions first! If something doesn't seem right don't do it until you have all the information, only do work when it's safe to do so! I stopped, considered the situation and got more information before jumping in!
Let's be honest, would you really jump inside a pipe with flowing water?! Haha 👍

@@22nukes I certainly wouldn't, but it's funny to watch so many gamers read the giant sign and hear caz go "oh god I do NOT want to go in there" and go "geronimo!!!" Now we know for sure that your safety instructions paid off.

@@22nukes tbf, her husband just went on the run from the law and essentially abandoned her and their kids. It's likely that if he went with them at the start of the game he'd go to prison and they'd lose everything. If I were in her shoes, I'd be pretty pissed off too. It makes it especially sad that the letter at the end was likely written and sent before news of the incident could be sent back to the mainland, because it sounds like she was ready to actually work through the situation with Caz instead of divorce. So she lost him right when she was ready to forgive him and he'll never even know about it.

@mallk238 well true, but coming fae a guy that's worked offshore I wouldn't say it's running! When you're out there you cant get away and hide!
The last letter is pretty sad though!

@@22nukes I did yeah! A very moving story. You don't get to spend much time with each character, but the game masterfully makes you fall in love with them. I cry at both roy and brodie's deaths everytime--quite phenomenal acting!
