      Strangely enough, I never laid a wrench to one eather. I did work on a rotary engine on an Artic Cat snowmobile. That was one weird engine. All the seals were bad so it wouldn't run. I scrapped it.

    • @Zeem4
      @Zeem4 3 роки тому +2

      @paul beenis I understood it to mean rotor tip seals - if they're unavailable or very expensive, you've got an engine with low compression that burns oil that's impossible or uneconomical to repair, hence scrap.

      And notice Mustie didn't have a fire extinguisher nearby, lucky human breath can put out fires. That engine's fly is down and she's losing oil. Cough, but hmm, she's losing rust too, never a good sign. Pull on your head, powder drops, ohhhhh, most certainly not a good sign.

    This video makes me feel so good about the 70 Bus I dragged home almost 22 years ago. Saved it from a junkyard after days of begging and pleading with the yard owner. Got it home, fixed the battery cables... put on one of my own beetle carbs that ran good (when parked)... got the points set, ignition firing nice and regular... still no run. Not a single poot. Then I took the valve covers off... turns out it was a new longblock, never had rocker arms or pushrods installed. Dug around in my garage for a full set, put it together and been driving it ever since. 1999-2021 never had that engine out. Gotta love these VW's.

    FYI with the engine out I loosen the spark plugs a hair then spray some lube around them. tighten them back up, work them in and out a bit to get the lube on the threads Then they come out without the aluminum on the threads.

    • @throttlebottle5906
      @throttlebottle5906 3 роки тому +2

      you can torch blast the plugs also, the steel will expand and help bust up the corrosion bond, you sure wont hurt the dense aluminum that transfers heat far faster than steel.
      thermal cycle them 3 or 4 times each and wrap on them with a hammer and steel tube/socket that's just larger than porcelain yet smaller than overall plug body. yeah you'll probbaly break the plug porcelain, but i'd rather break that than pull all the aluminum threads :)
      and yes by all means, just tweak them a bit and add magic spray and gently tweak back and forth while it works in.

    When fitting spark plugs to an aluminium cylinder head a high temperature anti-sieze grease must be used on the spark plug threads. This will prevent damage to the cylinder head threads when removing the spark plugs. It must be applied carefully, as the grease contains graphite and will affect the performance of the spark plugs if it contacts the electrodes. That's how we do it on aircraft piston engines anyway.

    Grest video. I really enjoyed this one. I used to work on air cooled VW's, back in the early 80's. Mostly Beetles. Never ones that sat for long. I had my share of broken #3 exhaust valves. The customer would usually say that it was fine and then just went "clunk" and quit. I had one "station car" that only drove a mile or so every day to the train station. It had no compression because the rocker arms were varnished to the rocker shafts. I fixed bugs to feed my drag racing habit. I had a 1680 cc bug that ran 13.20 at 100 mph. It turned 8 grand with stock Crank and rods. In seven years of bracket racing all I ever broke was a pair of spider gears.

But all your regular videos I really enjoy watching you teach me a lot about internal combustion engines! Please for the love of Pete keep on coming I really do want to try them thank you very much!

    1 working cylinder, sounds about right for those engines 😂 she's fine mate just chuck her in and go for a drive! 😂
    As us Aussie's say "she'll be right mate, just give her the guts and she'll come good in no time at all on the freeway" 😉 (Regards, your local bush mechanic). All the while thinking of the tow truck fees and rural labour and parts cost bill when he gets it back to the workshop 😂.

    • @CitizenTechTalk

      @@stellarproductions8888 almost spot on. 1 Kangaroo and a Rock Wallaby (smaller breed that like its name hangs around rocky crags and cliffs, we call them torque converters 👍 because jeez they get up and go when yah shoot at em 😂)
      Also I reckon those engines have bilby nuts as well. We'll they at least look like bilbys nuts 😆 (small Australian native rodent, looks like a tiny kangaroo but it's a native mouse with long tail with a hairy tuft on the end to scare off predators)
      And I'm sure they have dingo drive as part of the transmission too, once they get up to speed it's almost impossible to stop em! 😆 Dingo's wind up slow and slow down slow when running at yah to eat yah 😂, by the way that's true, Dingos eat people in Australia if given the chance they're our version of the wolf. Jim.
      Don’t judge a book by it’s cover.
      When I was 17 I got a beetle with a comparable engine.
      A $300 of pistons cylinders and some seals and it was my only car for many years.
      Moved me from Virginia to Nashville,
      To Ohio.
      And amazingly all the way to Atlanta Georgia.
      Never was towed.
      Never let me down.
      Always got me where I wanted to go.
      And when I scrapped the car from dangerous rust.
      The engine went into a dune buggy and eventbough the main bearings could be wiggled by hand.
      I used to take it to the drag strip and launch it so hard it ripped the transmission mount free and smashed the trans against the floor.
      Oh ya and I still drove it home.
      Old machines are not the same as the plastic junk ppl own now a days.

However, some of the '36 had '35 style grill (factory leftovers?) and, since either grill would fit in either model year later restorations can be seen using the "wrong" grill.
