Blown Up VW Bus Engine, Can We Repair It For Free?

- Опубліковано 15 жов 2024
- I picked this 1968 vw bus engine up on a property cleanout. after sitting 40 years in the dirt, on an earlier video we found it had dropped a valve and had no compression on 3 cylinders. then tore it down and found it was a rotten mess, lets see if we can bring it back to usefulness as cheap as possible.
I might be in the minority here as a retired lady but I just love this channel! Mustie, your delight and skill in getting all kinds of things working again is amazing to watch. Thanks for putting out all this great content!!
@@nadineharris9966 Pffft, I think you all have crushes on Mustie and won't admit it to yourselves!
Hahahaa, just kidding.
@@nadineharris9966 Same here, too. Do we represent an hitherto-unappreciated demographic?
I’m a 24 year old cellist and just found this channel. So cool to watch as a fellow tinkerer

Thanx man💫 the best i ever seen ! I think you gave me Courage to do this on my 1600 AD engine on the bus💫❤️🙏🏼🕊✨
My favorite thing is when Mustie gets something to work and he says "HA!" That youthful exuberance keeps us all young. I only hope I can be wrenching as long as you my friend.
Hi Mr Crawford !! Im such a grat Fan from Mustie 1 !! I like the Way, dont trash it,repair it !!! Good Greets from Bavaria !!! God bless America !! and Stay All Healthy Sir !!
Ha.!!!! Eureka
Mustie1 has the memory of a squirrel. How he remembers where all these parts are squirrelled away is amazing!
Nah, Squirrels forget where 80% of their nuts are! Mustie is more like a Truffle Pig. That is a compliment by the way :)
@@kevins4229 a truffle pig i nearly pissed myself
Shit, so my memory is probbably like the memory abilities of a guppy. Maxed out at six seconds into history.
@@kevins4229 very true. The cost of those Truffles and the consulting of one is priceless...
It’s like this. You know you have the part. You’re not sure where. But you know you have it. So you start to remember projects you’ve done. Or the last time you were in a certain tote or storage building. You work from there. A hoarde is a hoarde
Before Musty1 I could never see myself watching a 1hr+ video. Now I’m disappointed every time one comes to an end. I could watch for hours easily. Always a pleasure.
Hello my name is giving how far what is your
I put them on at work while I'm building and repairing bikes (the pedal power kind).
That Head tool works a treat! I had no use for it and knew where it needed to go. Glad you like it! Cheers Darren! Zip~
@riflessss That he did. I got that handy tool and a C clamp style for the VW's and had no use at all for it. Also sent him some info on his King midget to help out. Cheers Rifle! Zip~
@@ZippoVarga You're a good man, Zippo.
@@thedevilinthecircuit1414 Thanks Circuit! The way I see it, if I don't need it, I can find someone who does. Cheers! Zip~
You gave him the tool and info on the midget, and he has plans for that engine now... HMMMMMHMHMNN, suspicious.
I lived and had a vw shop in Athens Ohio.
The home of the king midget.
At the “mall” they had a little museum of king midgets.
I enjoy watching the carburetor rebuild, especially when you find a plugged or dirty jet. The feeling of success when the engine starts and runs smoothly, knowing that the carburetor is clean and tuned just right. Awesome!!
$40 parts plus $200K tools, plus $100K tuition, plus $1 million experience, plus infinite wealth of common sense equals a $40 fix! Love it when you fondle the hoard! Thanks, great video!
This man is a legend. Once in a blue moon he doesn't win but very rarely. It's so fascinating to watch him pull an engine apart and rebuild it to run spot on. Great video mustie
The stuff of good dreams!!. When I first followed Mustie, this is the type of thing you did, it’s good to be back....Its how to make a boring Sunday brilliant.Thank You Pal.
Picked up a free lawn mower last night, cleaned the carb and sold it today. Thank you for your videos you have taught me a lot.
Just love when old stuff comes back to life ,with everything being computerized the skills and parts are slowly dying , thanks mustie
I agree, which is why I watch Mustie and VGG :-)
But.... we have Mustie1 and VGG and others creating content to compliment books of old. So, that hopefully the skills of troubleshooting won't be lost forever.
With no place to hook up a scanner on vintage VW tecks today wood be lost in diagnosis the problems
Mustie 1. I am blown away at your very keen memory. Especially, the extent of your hoard.
A good hoarder acts oblivious to where things are to the knowledge of others. BUT knows exactly where every item is!!!
Legend has it, when Mustie was born, He drove his parents home in a VW T1
Just don't ask where he built the engine to do it :-)
They say that when he was born, a VW key materialized into his hand right hand, in the other, the cup he uses to check fuel. It's the regalia of VW!
After it was sitting for 17 years in a barn. As it started, he gave a maniacal laugh and drove them home.
I've heard that story before so it Must-ie be true 😂🤣
Musti is the man! Rebuilding a 50 plus year old engine with spare parts from his stash. Amazing!
I'm in awe of your mechanical expertise!
There's something immensely satisfying about resurrecting dead VW engines. I can hear the pleasure in your voice.
Something about the calm easy work through on your videos makes me wish I was a nicer person. They are also really relaxing and my appreciation for how thorough you are is very appeasing to my OCD. Kudos
I thought I was the only one to do the rubber hose/drill valve lapping trick. You are my hero. Every motor I've done this to has run like a champ.
I love your timing for uploading your videos. They're the first thing I watch on UA-cam on a Sunday morning.
I like that Mustie is not obsessed by perfection. Common sense rules.
I do too. There are a few trolls that comment on his videos, picking everything apart that he does, but they just don't have the skills and presence to put together a channel like Mustie's. Jealousy reigns!
@@eskieman3948 luv it when he uses his stash to build the project
When that engine starts, your laugh reminds of Dr. Frankenstein as his monster came to life. 😂😂😂
Hahahahaha
He needs to yell it's alive !!!!!!
Mustie is the greatest "shop teacher" I ever had. And I have a degree in this stuff!
I'm impressed... when I saw it it looked just way to rusty to even think about restoring it.
Fine line between you tube star and excessively frugal middle aged man trying to avoid having to work 9-5. And believe me, I'm not being critical. I've been there, well except the part where I was a you tube star. But I was raising little kids. Been back in the workforce full time since 2017 but I had a long run 2002 to 2017 working part time and watching kids. It's all good. Really enjoy your videos especially your attitude when things don't go the way you expect. I'm working on that when I fix things and in life in general. You get what you get and it's often not what a person expects to get. Wish they'd teach that stuff in school.
I recognize that yard, your over at VWnut 1967 place. Hi Brian!
Boy did you bring back memories. While away at college with my 63 beetle had one of the valves break when I was up around 65 on an interstate. Towed the car back to the apartment, pulled the engine (it was spring and outside) and found the problem- a busted valve. A $100.00 engine (guaranteed to run but no time length) installed and took us on our honeymoon to the east coast -from Chicagoland- and back.
Rebuilt the engine with the busted valve and drove it for a long time. All done under the vehicle, alone with few tools. Great little engines, was a lot of fun. Now-a-days (53 years later) it's a 3 year old Honda that I don't even self-change the oil. Same honeymoon lady, we're finding out about the preachers words "in sickness and health" meant, but still enjoying life. JimM
Thank you Darren I learned so much. These are the kind of videos that really helps A guy like me out
Mustie thank you for all the knowledge about VW's I just scored a 1971 VW bug rust free it's rare find living in Minnesota keep up the good work
Only master hoarders have a stash at their friends place. The ones you see on tv are amateurs
When the engine started I smiled 🥰
I’m probably one of the few females at my age especially, that loves that sound! Love my bug and other vintage VW’s ♥️
Never gets old to see old non running junk come back to life! Love it!
Mustie I really enjoy your vids. I worked with an old fellow who was a repairer and fixer i often found lawn mower engines and tell him the previous owner said that the engine would never run again..Fred always proved them wrong.
Its so satisfying to see how Mustie saved this engine from death. Love and care is all these air-cooled engines need. Thanks for another amazing video
I think we all enjoy the first firery starts of the VW engine after so many years and the laugh and chuckle that follows that. We learn from the master and are entertained.
Amazing how tough these little engines are. Sitting 40 years with water all over and in it, and couple of parts replaced and good to go.👍👍
Yeah, that and all the other things wrong; roached valves/valvetrain, all the blow-by, general neglect, not enough oil changes (or a crappy oil change interval).
So the modularity of the engine is its strength by far--separate crankcase, cylinders and cylinder heads. And Mustie has a stash to die for.
I should've delved into air-cooled VWs early on because nowadays you have to be a hardcore enthusiast to score the parts and vehicles.
Blue flames shooting at little gas squeeze bottle and the patented Mustie1 laugh. Doesn't get any better.
And that's how you put together a good engine from another 3 bad one's parts.
Bringing back to life such a "frankenstein" is priceless.
Great job Mustie!!!!!
Great save, thanks for the video as always.
yeeee mustie the engine whisperer has revived another one from the dead!
His buddy is gonna want that engine back now. lol
@@Eremon1 Or, as they joked, mustie would just call him up that the engine was basically new!
Thanks for the trip down memory lane, my Dad and did this job in December 1978 on a 1970 bug engine, it was only 8 years old at the time, but watching the process took me back. The VW was a hand-me-down graduation present for me - I was supposed to have finished the previous May but not the best student. The engine needed work but the body was shot so I got a barn find and went to work - thanks again.
This is awesome! You inspired me to make my own channel, I picked up 7 small engines from an estate sale for free and I've made 2 videos so far!
How to transform a total pile of junk into an absolute sweetheart! And for less than a synthetic oil change. Darren you're a national treasure 🇺🇸🦅 salute from FL 🙋
Interesting ring compressor. Designed for installing cylinder on the piston, instead of piston into the cylinder.
I had my doubts on this engine, but with enough spare parts, anything’s possible.
The joys of air cooled vw.
I had doubts when I was a teen.
Til I built my junk engine and drove it all over for years and years.
Never had to get towed.
Always made it back.
She's a runner! Always fun to pick through the stash and find a box full of winners.
Mustie1 you have taught me so much over the past two years I’ve been watching you I swear it’s like free engine mechanics weather it be one, two, four, or six cylinders you have taught me so much! I seriously appreciate your knowledge and explanations in every video you do ! This is coming from someone with absolutely no engine knowledge as of almost three years now to being able to diagnose my own issues and every time reverting back to your videos if I have a question or problem.. my man thank you so much keep up with the amazing work!
You have an expert sense on when to 2x the speed and even though you said you'd lap all the valves and "bring us back" when you
were done, you still showed us some footage (at 2x). Lapping valves is a satisfying experience to either do or 'spectate' on... kudos
Alright, VW heaven. Stashes hidden in stashes.
Dear w.
👍👌👏 Yeah! I really thought/hoped that great Mustie1 would transfer all his stash to the new, big and dry location.
Best regards, luck and health.
@@PabloDiablo682 idk he has a massive amount of components. He may not have enough space for all of them at his new location. He may keep majority of the items where they are because he has the space to store them.

Great inspiration for folks with a few tools, some time and some air-cooled VWs in the backyard. Darren in his element. Educational entertainment! Thanks, Darren!
It’s all been said. Truly a joy and treat to watch you work your magic. We are all thankful for your efforts. Just never stop.
It is a great felling watching that engine blowing fire for the first time in years awesome work my friend.
How satisfying to see an old engine come back to life. I don't own a vw. I have no immediate plans to buy a VW but if one day I happen to come across a bargain, your videos will be incredibly valuable!
You sir are one amazing mechanic.
Did anyone else hold their breath while Mustie was torqueing the heads down?
Funnily enough, yes. I was waiting for something to go wrong/snap, etc.
Yes I was as I can remember pulling a stud out many years ago. Not a great noise or feeling on the torque wrench
Yep. As I recall, the heads torque at about 24? lbs. Not very much. Any more and the studs pull out of the case, which is a problem on these engines anyway.
Motor sounds good like a well oiled sewing machine, thanks for taking us along.
Jason called it, you'd get it purring like new with nearly no money invested.
Yah, sure. When you have an infinite amount of parts horded, you can get anything running.
I know this is edited, but you make it look easy. A very satisfying watch. Nice.
“The stud shaft is larger.” Internet award for the day! 😂
I'm so happy to find this channel. I used to own just VWs in my younger days and learned how to work on cars watching & helping my father wrench.
Thanks Mustie1
Great video series mate. Thank you. Greetings from Kent UK 👍
When I was taught to lap valves they would test the seal afterwards by putting the valves in, without springs etc., put the head cylinder side up on the bench and before they went home for the night they would fill the area the valves seat in with petrol. The petrol had to still be there in the morning!
I was very happy 😃 at the end of the previous video when we saw the search for engine parts and we knew he was going to resurrect the engine!!
Sounds amazing with this exaust! Perfect revival😍
I love the programs you do about VWs most of all. I had a 1300 Beetle for 27yrs and am sorry that I ever parted with it, the most simple and practical cars ever made.
As always I'm inspired by the enthusiasm that you have for keeping things alive. If this was a Bond movie, then it would be You Only Live Twice, but then there would be more sequels. Thank you for your enthusiasm. Regards, Tiny, Lincolnshire, UK 🇬🇧 😁
Another triumph of recovery. A thing of beauty made from a literal pile of crap. That engine sounds so good. Thank you and hats off to you.
That child-like laugh and "do it again" gets me every time. My guess is Mustie got himself a dune buggy, probably a ratty one.
I'm voting on an old 60s style trike.
@@terryfromsouthcarolina4601 I could see that too.
Welcome back to your (our) roots! Love the excersions into other stuff but pawing through boxes of laid-by tired iron nearly brought tears to my eyes!
Take a triangular file and put grooves across the threads of the nuts to give the crud somewhere to go. This is not to cut new threads, only for cleaning them. 26 years as a machinist taught me this trick.
Hey Mustie, I know this is an old video, but I just wanted to say thanks. I've learned a lot from your channel, but this one in particular saved me from a whole top end job. Thanks again!
And the engine may run for another day. Nice job as usual 👍

Mustie1, your a man of great skill and knowledge, a pleasure to watch you in action.
Hey Mustie, what we use to do to adjust our carbs was to push a old piece of rubber hose on the screw so the hose stuck out pretty far and do the adjusting that way without screwing around with a screwdriver
