In the opening of Half-life the monorail takes you past a security guard hammering on a locked door, that’s Barney and pretty much how Blue Shift starts. Barney makes an appearance early on in Half-life 2.
Biggest mistake of the ambush - taking too long to shoot. The marines should've turned hostile as soon as you approached the scientist, THEN realistically there'd be no chance.

While Shephard is somewhat of a blank slate for the player, I like to think that, orders or not he would have tolerated the other staff at least, and assisted them how he could outside of friendly fire at best.@@PieroMinayaRojas Again, the whole "Cleanup crew kills all the egg heads and security" thing is cool, I dig it, but it makes me yearn for more of those "are we the baddies?" type scenarios (like the two Marines at the launch controls for the rocket), or just being able to tolerate BM staff and not put a bullet in them.

Damn, barney was badass. Took on a whole squad of marines who had the jump on him and won. He doesnt even have an hev suit. No wonder he got so far in civil protection.
The game have him a lot of armor tho, so i felt like it was more fun than hl1. In original blue shift you can have so much armor so they throw a lot of soldiers at you.
I wrote a couple parts for this :) I was originally against the whole ‘trick’ idea but I think it turned out great. Keep an eye out for Chapter 5 updates!

I'm a half life fan so I was waiting to encounter the military for the first time. I was shocked when I saw the guy up there. I hid real fast and thought phew..he didn't see me. I started to shoot at him and all hell broke loose. I thought something was odd so I reloaded my save and did the scenario where they pretend to be friends. I thought that was pretty sneaky and would be funny if it caught people by surprise.

I just followed the soldiers and one of them led me over to the closet in the corner, and started firing at me as I entered the closet. Also, I wish that they included a similar scene right after this so that you could be the one to ambush them by pretending to follow along
You can ambush them in a way. I was walking down some tunnel and saw them drop the bodies including the scientist at the exact hole. So I just played along and shot the guy next to the truck point blank. I think they said 'Oh shit he knows' or smth like that.
"watch for freeman" Is the supposed to be when the military first arrives to black Mesa? I was under the impression that the military didn't know who freeman was until they realized that he was the only scientist actually fighting back. Am I wrong?
It is likely they knew of him early on due to questioned scientists who may have pointed out everything going wrong in sector C anomalous materials labs or so, with Freeman being a key individual in all of it.
Lol the guy on the roof could have just snuck out when barney walked by and shot him in the back. This is a bit too much of an elaborate ruse to trap a single lowly security guard. I'd understand if it was a team of scientists they wanted to bait into a false sense of safety in order to question them before killing, but not a single security guard who the HECU would dispose of immediately due to them being the only staff in the entire facility who are armed and could fight back (freeman is an exception to this rule of course)
Pretty sure you can also see a corpse at the bottom when you look down. Just one brief second of "ohhhh this is where they're dumping the bodies" "WEAPONS FREE"
if the HECU and the facility staff actually worked together instead of the HECU killing everyone, then humanity could have been spared from the combine.
