No, thank YOU for creating something hella special. This is probably gonna be my go-to method for replaying HL1 in the future. Two questions, though. 1) Any plans to add subtitles? 2) Half-Life 2: MMod on Steam when?
@@protostar5946 Maybe, not sure yet, as for HL2MMod on Steam - putting HL1MMod on Steam was a gigantic pain and a problem, you have to get super lucky and get it touch with someone at Valve for them to setup your app on Steam properly, otherwise their app checking department has no idea what you're trying to do with adding a mod on Steam.
Omg...I still remember when I got the demo for HL before release and you crawl through a vent and the soldiers hear you and shoot up the vent and light penetrates through the bullet holes. My little mind was blown, I thought nothing will ever look better in games. It's been more than 25 years since that, but it's still a fresh memory in my mind.
8:58 the silencer has one purpose, and it is to silently take out enemies without alerting anyone around them. It’s actually comedic because they won’t react to getting shot.
My favorite part of Half-Life mods is how they take what was already a pretty industry defining game and either improve it or just add absurdity to it, and either way, the results are almost always entertaining.
@@BlueZirnitra Yes, but it's the aspect of it being done for a game such as Half-Life, where the game had such a profound effect on the industry as a whole. Whether it's the updated mechanics of something like MMod or the absurdity of something like Crack-Life, or even just something like Half-Payne or Half-Nuked which brings in other veteran protagonists.
The shotgun in the original has the issue of it basically being point blank use only, namely on hard. It can one shot things even on hard but does so consistently so you'd use it as a finisher mainly or kind of like you would with a weapon in Doom. Quick pull out, right click, then switch to something else due to its cool down. MMOD makes it a bit more viable with the decently faster fire rate and MUCH faster reload which actually hurts me because there is no way the guy in the video didn't notice that.
They also added the tertiary launcher that is really effective at killing things. Lobbing one of those bee grenades kills grunts on directs. I used it for much of the xen enemies as it can kill vorts and controllers pretty easily.

Wow, after watching the video I wondered if you and I played the same original Half-Life 1. I LOVED the shotgun, its alt-fire shot two shells and destroyed anything point blank. And the crossbow was definitaly overpowered, the only balancing factor was the relatively low amount of ammunition you could find for it. Finally, the hive gun was awesome, because you could fire around the corners with it, and in the latter levels when you had ammo issues, it was clutch to save on ammo.
8:55 The silencers do actually make it harder for enemies to hear you. For example, one time (in questionable ethics I think) there were two marines with their backs turned and they were right next to each other. I tried shooting one with mp5 without the silencer, and the other guy noticed and attacked me, but with the silencer, the other guy just kept standing there. I tried with the Glock too and it had the same results. But you’re never really gonna notice this unless you’re intentionally being stealthy, and I don’t think that’s something most people do in this game.
I feel like a lot of people add little "found the weapon" animations, but it always looks more like flair than the protagonist actually checking to make sure the weapon they just found on the ground is functional and wont hurt them lol. I know field stripping is out of the question, but it'd be cool to see something that looks a bit more realistic than "ooooo, pretty" lol
Man what can I say. Mods have done a whole a lot of awesome work that these guys have done to improve upon older games, and added newer features to increase the gaming experience even further.
More than just what you describe, half-life also singlehandedly brought about literally everything we take for granted in gaming today. In-game server browsers, explicit in-game mod support, SDKs for modding, even network coop and parkour (Sven and Action Half-Life respectively). I do disagree with you on hitscan vs projectiles though. Bullets travel faster than the speed of sound, unless you're more than a mile away they basically ARE hitscan weapons. The issue with them in most FPS games is that the AI doesn't have adequate programming to react to player movement with simulated inaccuracy by simulating response times and mis-aiming.
Half Life was a game I just felt like picking up when it was super cheap on Steam. Knew nothing about it, but it's now one of my all time games, and got me in to other classics such as System Shock, Thief, Deus Ex, and more. The fact that there is still an active community surround the game is a true testament to how phenomenal it is.
Did anyone else play that OEM version of Half-Life that leaked online before the full game came out? Back then you had to find an ftp server with like hundreds of files, if one was corrupt or a file got deleted then the whole thing was for nothing and internet speeds were so slow it took weeks to download a game. Eventually I got it and it really changed how I looked at games. It was the most immersed I'd ever felt playing a game. I remember it faded to black in the part where you're reaching the surface and the marines start sliding down ropes into the vent or whatever you were in at the time.
The mod is truly a blessing, it made the Hivehand not only blink, like as it is, a living creature, but also one of the best and most fun guns in the game.
8:10 the crowbars also got the ultra-heavy attack you just press the middle mouse button just like when equipping the suppressor for the pistol and SMG
The pistol has always been useful since it does 8 damage as opposed to 5 from SMG, which counts for something especially on a hard skill, not to mention its great accuracy at any range. The increased firerate turns it into a real beast now, for sure. The non-hitscan projectile option ruins the revolver somewhat though, so you won't be able to snipe people with it like before, which hurts especially in Xen. I agree about the shotgun, but it has its charm as this ugly duckling that still gets the job done unlike its certain uglier younger brother (cough-cough Doom3). However, MMod seemed to have made the cocking/reload even slower somehow, probably because it's made to be 2-stage'd. Tripmines activate much faster now which means you can use them during combat on an enemy who is rushing you, which is great. Bug Bomb from the Hivehand is indeed amazing (and dare I say OP), and is hands down the best way to make the weapon useful. It also counts as a grenade making enemies panic, which gives you an extra edge in avoiding the damage. Also you can toss the hand grenade down on alt fire like in HL2, though it's not that relevant but is nice. Agreed on other points.
Amazing mod, this is like a definitive edition coming in 2000. Which would have been called "Millenium" or "eXtreme" or "2K" at that time. However, I've always enjoyed the vanilla shotgun and I'm willing to fight topless over it

The crowbar has both the alternate heavy attack, and if you press the button that puts suppressors on the pistol and smg, you can do a charge up attack as well.
Two things you missed but I doubt need saying; the Crowbar also has a third swing which is far stronger, but also far slower. I use it to one-tap zombies. The 'single fire' alt for the Gluon Gun is actually just a stronger fire mode- you can hold it to keep it firing, but the cost is it needs to charge and drains energy about twice as fast.
Pressing M3 with the crowbar lets you do a charge attack which does more damage than heavy attack but its even slower (however if u hold M3 u will keep it charged)
1:41 TF, TF2, CS, CS2. L4D, L4D2. The whole Half Life Saga and the Portal games. And Gmod. These games also have loads of mods. And tons of fan made media online utilizing or referencing gldsource and source engine games, or making original content with it. And Source Film Maker and everything people have made in SFM and Gmod. Half Life is one of the MVPs in gaming culture like Doom, which had incredible wide-reaching effect on gaming culture. A big part of the wide-spread effect and long-lasting popularity is definitely in giving the gamers the development tools to make mods.
Funnily enough when I was a kid, I always thought that unsilenced weapons were cooler because the silenced weapons typically have much lamer sound design.
They Hunger Trilogy by Neil Manke. Used to be on PC Format magazine cover CDs in the Shareware/freeware sections. Amazing back in the day. Was being remade in Source by Manke but I think he went through a bad illness and it just seemed to stop?
YESSS great vid! I love it when you cover mods and more niche things like this G. Would love a follow up on the VR video, or a 3rd person mods for fps games.
Went and tried it after watching this. Only up to Office Complex so far, but definitely enjoying it. The default graphics setting of allowing pixellated textures makes quite the difference, and in a very good way, too.
From what I've played the suppressor isn't super useful but it does do is make it so enemies just don't react when you shoot them ,but must be unalerted. Just have the two marines in On The Rail talking bout how freeman will nine-mils are casually going through the first ones spine as the other is still talking to himself like nothing happened. It's unintentionally hilarious.
I really wish there was a shotgun mod for Half-life where the alt fire would be switching between pump and semiautomatic or just make it semiautomatic because the gun it's based on (spaz 12) could switching between pump action and semiautomatic. Hell, make the pump action setting do more damage, bigger spread, or something, and the semiautomatic do less damage, tighter spread, or something. Even a modd introducing new shotgun ammo types would be cool, like slugs, dragon's breath, explosive rounds. It would make the shotgun enemies more unique as well.

The 'single fire' alt for the Gluon Gun is actually just a stronger fire mode- you can hold it to keep it firing, but the cost is it needs to charge and drains energy about twice as fast.
"15 odd years old now"
Dude, that's how old Half-Life 2: ep 2 is now, not 1.
Jesus dude.
Pressing M3 with the crowbar lets you do a charge attack which does more damage than heavy attack but its even slower (however if u hold M3 u will keep it charged)
0:06 Three months for free, on my next daughter? Hmmm, I dunno ExpressVPN, I doubt I'd have time to sit on the computer then anyway.
11:27 "rocket lounger!"
Never understood as to why the laser sight attachment for the 357 gave you scope options.
A lot of the HL weapon functionality makes no sense.
Fun fact: there is a third option for three crowbar that acts like the wrench from op4 and you use it by holding down the scroll wheel
I think the silencer on the pistol and mp5 is a homage to the 1997 Half Life Beta.
Thanks for bringing this to my attention... looks awesome. Acquiring now.
You're wrong about the shotgun, of course...
3:18 fully modelled cervix? huh?
cinematic mod
Absolutely wild that people are still modding one of the most iconic arena shooters of all time
Mmod is how i remember Half Life looking.
Shoutout to Gunship Mark II for getting this done with everything happening there
Alyx's ending basically confirms HL3 and with L4D3 being leaked in the CS2 beta i think its safe to say that we're in luck.
I want to believe.
Was being remade in Source by Manke but I think he went through a bad illness and it just seemed to stop?
the Outro is so nice! This is the first Video i saw from GmanLives and the Outro is the reason why i subscribe!
7:40 Dear god, it *Is* beautiful...
I’ve never met G-man, but sounds like what I would imagine my Australian cousin to be like
It is an amazing mod, I am glad this is getting attention
this is the last place i expected to see you
YESSS great vid! I love it when you cover mods and more niche things like this G. Would love a follow up on the VR video, or a 3rd person mods for fps games.
Banger video gman, always love the vids u do on HL mods and old classic pc games. Look forward to the next upload !
Preach brother preach 🙌. Gman yeat again serves up another awesome review, cheers dude!
Half Life 3 will never come out even after we made Gabe a billionaire. F Valve and Gabe.
Went and tried it after watching this. Only up to Office Complex so far, but definitely enjoying it. The default graphics setting of allowing pixellated textures makes quite the difference, and in a very good way, too.
An ad just popped in at 4:43. thank you UA-cam for the great timing
1:48 Even though Team Fortress began as a Quake mod, and later became it's own think in Half Life's engine
Nice rundown of the mod. Looks like fun! Next time I get the Half-Life itch, I'll check it out.
yea i remember trying to play Half Life on hard and the marines INSTA know where u are and ur shot ten times before u can react. dang hit scan
What is the game in 7:06?
ULTRAKILL
7:18
You can turn texture filtering off in mmod?
Do you think the MMod also applies to the expansions? You know opposing force, blue shift and the other?
