  • KTM 390 Adventure | I have been riding my KTM 390 Adventure since 2020. This winter, with my riding limited, and the announcements of several new small adventure bikes such as the Royan Enfield Himalayan 450, the CFMoto Ibex 450, and a rumored new KTM 390 Adventure, I found myself considering a new bike. - Frank

I've been through a lot of other bikes the past 3 or 4 years. Tenere 700, Himalayan, CRF250, MT07, Enfield Interceptor. But the bike I've kept through it all is my 2020 390 adventure.
I seriously considered the CFMoto 450, but when it comes to it, it does less in the real world than the 390, and weighs more.
On the roads I ride here in Scotland, and the forest trails I ride offroad, the KTM is hilarious good fun. I'm sticking with my 390. The new himalayan 450, the triumph scrambler etc , just don't have all the goodness of the ktm, nor the sheer mad hooligan attitude. 65 now, but when I get on the 390, I'm 21 again, and laugh my head off at how nuts it is.
And the traction control has saved me a couple of times on unexpected patches of ice.
The most underrated and overlooked and maligned of all the smaller adventure bikes.
Like yourself , I've got the bike tweaked to exactly suit me, so why change.
(Apologies for the dissertation there, but I think we all get 'new bike notion' and the KTM deserves better :)

My street bike is a 2021 BMW R1250RS sport tourer, and I enjoy this MC more than any of the eight bikes I've owned. But every time I throw my leg over my "little" KTM 390 adventure, I smile and have so much fun on it. At 65, these are the last two bikes I'll own, and I'm happy I chose them.

Thanks for the thoughts and the ride along, its been to long since I've ridden my 390 Adventure.
The bits I've seen of the new 390 Adventure are very interesting, but I'll wait and see. There are so many new bikes coming out, I think it's a good idea to just wait a while and see if the rumors are true or not.
I've found that if I'm not happy with what I've got I wont be happy with something else either.

I hear ya! Been thinking the same thing. Every time I get on the 390 Adv I am reminded just how capable it is. Middleweight bikes have some advantages but the small bikes are stress free fun. Ibex 450 reviews are starting to trickle in. The post purchase costs are going to climb really fast.

I just wanted to thank you Frank for a very informative video, and timely in terms of me chancing upon it as I have a test ride on a 390 Adventure tomorrow with my wife coming along on the pillion seat. My local dealer has a couple of new bikes in 2023 colours discounted to £5200 (about 6500 U.S. dollars). Coincidentally they also have a 2020 790 Adventure for slightly more which was tempting but watching your video has "sealed the deal" in my mind plus I think the 390 has sufficient power for where I live in rural mid Wales - the nearest motorway is 50 miles away and I've got used to a bike that can do 80+mpg (imperial gals - probably about the only thing here in the UK that is bigger than what you have in the U.S.😂. The other bike on my shortlist is the Honda CB500x but perhaps I go for one of those when I'm old - I'm only 68 😉

Good GRAVY Frank! Be like me and be satisfied with one motorcycle ... er .. well... at a time🤣. I put my name on a list for a CF(China Farkle)450 too. They weren't taking deposits yet. I've never paid over 9k for a bike and lately I have been searching the T700's again because I just loved the one I had. But in reality, my super FARKLED DR/suspended gen1 KLR or DR650 is plenty if I'm honest with myself. Have you ever considered a DR650? Anyway, keep us posted on the latest, I'm sure after being on the Honda at the rally the KTM390 looks better.

I love my 390. It's perfect for my kind of riding. Would I like a new bike? Dumb question, of course . Who wouldn't want a new bike. But, almost all of my riding is solo and if I happen to drop this bike, which has happened, I can at least pick it up myself (67 y.o.). I can go anywhere the bigger bikes go perhaps even more. I can throw this thing around like a dirt bike. So, new bike? Of course, Will I? Nah.

there is something about the 390 ADV that gives me the fun in riding. I think it is about its characteristics - asking you to do more. Yeah it kind of sucks at low rpm torque, but when you give it what it wants, it is so much fun! It puts this smile on your face. For other bikes, i'd usually feel that same way when I ride on higher displacement bikes. The 390 ADV has some quirks in the offroad department, but the plethora of aftermarket accessories make up for it.

What does "high miles" mean? 50k? 80K? I'm asking for frame of reference, not to be a smart arse. These modern bikes will likely run for a VERY long time.

Hello Jag, 25K+ on a high strung 373 cc engine is IMHO "high mileage."
This is not a low strung DR650 or KLR650 engine. It's made to be run at 8K RPM to get the power out of it, and lives over 10K on highways.
And if you frequent the largest group for them on the Internet, (FB group with 46K members.) then 10K is the high end for most riders. Though the highest I have seen was 54K. It is most certainly an outlier. - Frank

Hey Frank! I own a ‘21 390 ADV, and plan to keep it for some time. 3rd owner, with only 3600 miles. I see no reason these bikes won’t live to 50k easily if properly maintained.

What part of Tennessee do you come to when you come here. I live in Roane County and I'm starting a Moto touring business called East Tennessee Moto Adventures. It will consist of History tours and scenic tours starting off from the Cumberland Plateau making a huge circle around East Tennessee over to North Carolina and back to Cumberland Co on the Plateau. People will see a part of East Tennessee and learn its History of some pretty nice towns and places that Changed the world history as we know it today. I would like to see you one day on a tour.
