The Steam Deck is like the swiss army knife of portable gaming.
I would say the swiss army kinfe of all gaming
More like swiss army knife of modern gaming, it's not really a good traveling console or just to play from your bed. It's kinda heavy and the battery doesn't last as much with big demanding games.
I like your cabinet. But I'm 60 and sit when I game. I need to learn how to emulate on my deck. My pc is gathering dust since I got my deck
@@barryklinedinst6233there is a emulator called Emudeck in desktop mode that allows you to emulate all the games from Amiga to PS3.
Knife? It's like a axe or a dumbbell
14:03 Just so you know Bob, Valve actually happens to be working on porting the steam deck UI to the desktop steam client, it’s supposed to eventually replace Big Picture mode. I’ve been playing around with it in the steam beta branch and it’s been awesome. It takes a little finagling with windows to access in it’s current state though. I’m excited to see it integrated into the stable branch eventually!
if you use steams experimental builds you can actually use the new ui with big picture right now
he could just use holoISO
@@andrewrichards188 Oh wow, that’s good to know! Definitely something I’ll have to look into and try out.
I didn’t find setting the launch parameter in the exe’s properties that hard tbh but I figured for someone setting up something like this, they’d probably wanna use as little KB/M as possible.
@@Sephiyroth He did switch out the Steam Deck for a windows based Aya handheld though, and it seems like he preferred that from what I can tell. Not gonna speak on his behalf but I recall him going over a few nitpicks with using a steam deck for the cabinet, and HoloISO would just reproduce those issues given it’s basically just telling him to install Linux.
The HoloISO project is badass though, I’m actually planning on building a HoloISO gaming machine to sit alongside my windows editing one. Really stoked to do that some day.
It's in stable I believe, you just have to launch with the option of -gamepadui I believe
I knew the second I started modding my Arcade1Up for a video that you would have an arcade built, shot and edited a video and posted it. Never cease to amaze me Bob.
Still want to see yours
@@_Smile_Today Just posted it 👍
This is easily one of the coolest videos you've put out in a while. That cabinet is absolutely epic!! Love that you pulled the trigger and got the vertical screen. Totally worth it and transformed the entire look of the final results
One note for someone replicating this that might want to use a steam dock they also want to use elsewhere, put hinges on one of the sides or the front so you can access the inside without moving the cab.
If you saw the other video this guy is kinda copying then you would see he used fake coin doors to hide and get access to the Steam Deck.
@@bland9876 got a link to that vid?
@@bland9876 people really need to learn that multiple people can do similar videos without it being "copying".
@@MaybeAnnatar being that one video is like 10 days later is saying something.
Plus this guy used a similar title when he only had the Steam Deck in there for like 2 seconds. Basically clickbait.1
Man, you should absolutely provide the blue prints for this build 🤯
bob please 🥺
please!!!
:D
Yes please thus would be a fun project
He might not be able to if the design belongs to his friend ThrillHouse.
It's actually a modding more than brandnew build so 🤔
You can make basically every controller Xinput with a program like X360ce, set it to run at startup and you'll never have to mess with it.
This is amazing and something that I hope to do eventually. I love the animated/live background. You just got super big points for having lots of Atari logos on the cabinet. Finally a roller ball for playing Centipede!!!!👍
The monitor in that orientation is perfect for an arcade cabinet. I have seen that monitor before but never thought of that use case. Awesome 👌
This cabinet is gorgeous and looks like a ton of fun!! Also Hi Will!!!!
My favorite way to play games:
1- being on my feet the whole time
2- hunched over a screen
3- using old-style joysticks and loud clacky buttons
that's uncomfortable tbh, i personally like to unwind on the couch after a long day and play my handhelds in comfort with some headphones, standing up to do that wouldn't work for me lol
I've been watching every one of your videos for a while now - you've REALLY outdone yourself on this one. Freaking amazing man.
Wolf this is amazing! I want to build an arcade but something that can play modern systems and has a more modern look and you knocked it out of the park! Super amazing!
Very cool Build Bob! Using the DualUp monitor was quite clever, I am going to be building a wall mounted arcade unit for my apartment at some point this year and might incorporate that LG. It's always good to see videos like this with true creativity to take inspiration from! I'll be making a video of it too :)
A wall mounted arcade is a great idea for some space saving!
My steam deck dock is hidden in early 20th century metal luggage. When you open it you find a a complete gaming setup. It's my masterpiece
this is so beyond beautiful. Videogames have gotten to a place my middle school self couldn't have imagined
Batocera... working on an Arcade1up conversion and Batocera is fantastic. Works with my arcade buttons and 8bitdo sf30 out of the box.
I was waiting since Steam Deck's day one to see a project like this, but sadly never crossed one. I´m glad to see you were the first one to come up with a video about it, keep up the good work!
Awesome video, this is something I have thought about doing but seeing yours is amazing and I am obsessed with it now. Great video Bob, love everything about this!
launch box and big box front end is the way to go on windows. you can completely replace the windows UI with big box with a single click. helps with bootup times as well.
I had this exact idea years ago when I discovered emulation with the Wii. So cool you brought it to life!
I've looked at that LG monitor and arcade games in portrait mode didn't even occur to me - but in hindsight: SWEET. On the list for when I finally save enough to start working on my own arcade cabinet.
You have done exactly what I want to do. The Arcade Wulffden insert at the top is a real nice touch. This looks incredible Bob.
I think this is the coolest thing you’ve ever done on the channel. This is awesome
Genius use of that monitor. For your Windows emulation needs, did you give Retrobat a try? It uses Emulation Station, though not desktop edition. It’s sort of Batocera for Windows, so to speak, essentially a script that downloads and sets up most of the emulators and front end stuff without a whole lot of pain. In fact, Retrobat can get you up and running about as quickly as a Batocera install, with the added benefit of full access to your Windows game library. But loving this idea for home arcade DIY. Excellent stuff!
As someone who only experienced the feel and witnessed a true old school arcade machine. I got to say that is a pretty solid build for an arcade machine aside the fact it's all run by a modern brain for emulation. There is one arcade style I don't see often, that being the Cocktail arcade table. Now I know it's not really the most convenient version of arcade machines but it certainly is a unique one. I know some fold up and you can get one somewhere online but I've yet to see an ultimate emulation done on one like what you've done with your machine. it'd be kind of cool to have one as a nice decoration you can play and of course it would be liquid proof & Food proof.
Woah this is so freaking cool!
Was that a cameo by Son One who can be seen on the WulffDen Podcast Channel or wherever you get podcasts ! Oh and nice to see the WulffDen jacket and shirts on sale ! One step closer to my Net Jet to the Wynn Encore Tower suite!!!! #wulffdendad
Dude this is the coolest thing you’ve ever done! Amazing!
This Video, that cabinet monitor and whole set up.. blew my mind! Loved it! 😍
Looks awesome! I love how you repurposed the existing MicroCenter Fight Stick! If you want XInput I would suggest swapping out the encoder board for a Pacto Tech 2000H.
Bro, a mini PC will be perfect for this, that’s what I did years ago with an Intel NUC and Batocera as the OS. You can do the same, but if you wanted to use SteamOS you could just get an AMD powered mini PC like the HP Elite Desk and HoloISO as the OS and you have your Steam Deck in a box.
I buy a lot of tech toys as they come out and the Steam Deck is the first one to really exceed my expectations, I really thought I'd be putting windows on it by now but I'm 100% satisfied with SteamOS, and I'm just scratching the surface of what can be done with this thing.
This is exactly what I’m looking for in a cabinet. Awesome job 👏🏽
I've been "planning" how I was going to make my own arcade cabinet so I wanted to say shpanks for going through it all with us
0:30 geez I read “dog for sale” at first and was like 😶
You definitely gave me ideas on how to better make the one I wanna do. I wanted ease of use and set up & was gonna just have a switch inside. I had concerns about the monitor cause I want to play the old arcade collections on it and some are vertical. And for some reason I never thought to not have the screen under glass. So now ima have it outward and open on a rotating mount.
The idea of using a square monitor in an arcade emulator has been around for a long time.
But in Japan they didn't understand the idea at all. I am very happy to have someone here who understands that.
Bob this is the coolest project you've done on this channel. Quite the rabbit hole of constant modifications.
Nice! I have a similar setup. I modded a Final Fight Arcade1up cabinet with an Intec Deck and now I connect my Steam Deck, my Nintendo Switch, and my Super Console X Cube to it! Great fun playing modern arcade-style games on an arcade cabinet like Mortal Kombat 11 or Double Dragon 4.
I had been considering the LG DualUp for work-from-home. Now I feel compelled to get it and set up its arm mount where I can pivot it to the side of my desk and use for Switch/emulation/etc. with my kids when I've signed off for the day.
I’ll be honest I’ve followed this channel for a while and often find myself asking why would you ever need to do that about some of you projects. But this. This is a thing of beauty. My jealousy is immeasurable.
I recently got an 8bitdo arcade stick and have been wanting to do something like this so badly. Awesome to see that you've done it!
Awesome... just awesome. You are really killing it with your content.
Highly entertaining and somehow astonishing soothing too. Dont know why... maybe the editing and the calm voice.
But great content nonetheless.
I use a PC in my arcade cabinet running Batocera. Very easy to set up and configure, highly recommended
I was wondering if the LG DualUP would ever get love for gaming, and I'm so glad to see it going this well as a hybrid arcade system. Great setup.
This is the coolest video you’ve made imo. I’ve always wanted to make an arcade cabinet and never though of this as an option.
bro this is fantastic! Congrats for this amazing idea, great executiuon and textbook video production. Killin it Bob.
This is probably one of the coolest projects you showed off on this channel. Totally want to do this one day.
I build stuff like this out of old laptops. I have one built into a gutted Sony TV from 1976, and another in an NES Shell (don't worry. no functioning vintage devices were harmed). I've been eyeing something more arcade-cabinet shaped for my next build, so this is a nice bit of inspiration.
Love the setup!
Great video! Really captures the ups/downs of tinkering with emulators & front ends.
Amazing build!
This is rad. There's a bunch of custom bezels you can use on retroarch to fill up the remaining space when using 4:3. Retrobat is nice to use on windows also instead of just using emulation station
This is so cool! Love it! ^_^
It's a lovely cabinet and his friend did a good job.
Great video as always, good job with building that arcade, anyways, keep it up!
Cool build. I've got a ps5, steam deck and MiSTer plugged into an hdmi switcher in my cabinet. Sooo fun!!!
So this is one of my favorite UA-cam channels by far, and UA-cam decided to unsub me from not only this channel but all the secondary channels associated with Wulff Den!! I'm excited to catch up on all these videos at least!!
I love this idea, when I finally buy my own house this is definitely on top of the list.
You can add overlay that will get rid of the black bars. The game title banner on top and move list banner on bottom. For example Street Fighter/Mortal Kombat arcade banner on top and the character movelist on bottom. Most games have quick tutorial and button layout graphics banners that make it look complete like Japanese arcades.
Great arcade cabinet, this gets me in the mood to finally make a Project Diva cabinet of my own
You are so underrated with all the cool content you make :(
This is my new favorite channel!
Wow beautiful cabinet. I currently use a HORI fight stick alpha on my adjustable height desk and a 32" curved monitor. The cost for just those 3 things is over $1,000, so I can only imagine how much this cabinet cost! Looks totally worth it though.
Batocera was the one that worked for me and my Game Room Solution arcade cabinet
I would love to watch a video on how you manage your ROMs via Dropbox!! That sounds very efficient and I would love to try and recreate it for myself
i'm not sure how that works tbh, obviously he would need the storage space to have everything on there, personally i still use local hard drives for retro stuff plus it's free and doesn't need a monthly fee to run and keep my files
This is pretty interesting to see. The biggest takeaway from this seems to be to either place a door where the coin slot would be to access the Steam Deck to insert/remove it easily, or place something like a shelf or holder on one of the sides with the cording going into the stand. Personally, I use an adapter cord sort of thing, that plugs into the USB-C slot on the Deck, and gives me simultaneous access to a HDMI slot, USB slot, as well as a duplicate USB-C slot so I'm not losing anything having it in. Using something like that, you can turn this into pretty much a plug-and-play, having it already attached to power, HDMI to the monitor, and either a mini keyboard via USB or a secondary controller.
The main thing that I can't seem to fully decide on would be whether it would be better to use a secondary controller, or just have the cording positioned where I can just pick up the Deck and use it directly as the controller. The latter would give slightly more easily control mapping, and I can typically just use the deck itself as the second screen for emulating Wii-U, DS, and 3DS games. But, using the monitor setup you've got in the video would let me upscale the game screens a bit more, which is pretty important for DS and 3DS since they're pretty low-resolution.
I wonder if a fighting-stick setup that that Atari one you have would have enough empty space on the inside, since you said it's powered by a single Raspberry Pi type board, to drill a small hole in the front for cording (if not using wireless), and having it double as storage for something like a pair of PS5 controllers, so it still looks like a traditional arcade cabinet at a glance instead of having the controllers placed somewhere obvious.
omg wow uncanny I am trying to do the exact thing, I got an Atari fight stick over the holidays and have a Batocera primed and all set microsd. Been digging the web for a stand for the fight stick as I cannot find them at Micro Center :(. You are my hero sir Thanks for posting this
now i am on your friends website trying to figure if I can get just a stand built
I like the fact that the screen can be title vertically, definitely something i would want in a modern home arcade.
Never mind, it s another screen... a very cool one though.
The DualUp is already an interesting monitor in its own right, but man this is the best use for it I’ve seen so far 😂
This is awesome. I've thought of doing something like this for a while and then bam, you go and make an awesome video about this haha. Have you thought of maybe just using a wireless HDMI receiver or something to see if you can get your main PC or a laptop (if it's nearby) working on there? I've heard that wireless HDMI can actually be really good latency wise and that, paired with a generic usb wireless keyboard/mouse combo could make configuring stuff a breeze and stop you from needing to dock a physical device to use it. It would just mean plugging the receiver in and switching displays
Great job man, I would love to see a frame in front of the monitor, but with what you have u did great
Great video, really love the idea of an homemade arcade cabinet. Ever thought about installing Halo OS (Steam OS) on a SFX/Micro PC as the emulation system?
i cant wait for you to fall down the "Mister FPGA" rabbit hole my dude. some serious future content!
Great stuff! Makes me want to try building an arcade again! And that DualUp monitor is pretty dang cool! ^^
Great video, this was quite the project!
Great Stuff, as always!
You mentioned that Steam Big Picture only supports 16:9, however, you can force the Big Picture to be the SteamOS UI if you use the beta and the launch option -gamepadui.
Nice setup! I have the same saving issue with my Raspberry Pi. It has something to do with permissions. I saw a reddit post saying you have type Reset ownership/permissions of /home/pi/RetroPie/roms/ via
(I believe) retropie-setup > configuration/tools
I haven't gone in and tried it yet, but other users said it worked for them.
That's amazing. I've always wanted to make my own arcade machine. This was an awesome video dude
Beautiful I got a Pandoras Box Dx a few years back I'm trying to do the exact same thing with.
Hey Bob. Have you ever considered a MiSTer? Might be perfect for this use case. It's an open-source FPGA-based hardware emulation system. The benefit of FPGA is that it makes reducing input lag (and anything to do with precise timings in general) much easier. Because of this, the devs have prioritized high accuracy, minimal latency, and default settings that optimize the experience for arcade enthusiasts (perfect pixels, excellent CRT simulation with no added latency, accurate sound). It's not for everyone (a bit more expensive for some otherwise underpowered hardware) but it's really the sweet spot for retro enthusiasts
Unfortunately, the MiSTer doesn't support the resolution of the DualUp monitor, maxing out at 2048x1536.
@@UrkelMoeDee This is true, but it could probably handle a custom modeline to get to half res assuming the display can handle it. Wouldn't be a problem for the kind of content the device supports
Great ad for the LG DualUp
another advantage of setting up an arcade cabinet using a windows computer is you could set up parsec on it so when you need to pop into windows to admin or manage stuff, you can just remote in from another computer, that way you don't need that goofy little remote/microkeyboard thing.
oh and I happen to know from personal experience that 'arcade cabinet" is a fantastic use case for an old gaming desktop you might have lying around. (could even have it double your NAS and or plex server etc) food for thought
the arcade looks cute. the workshop looks cool. also, hannah looks very cute :).
This is the coolest thing ive ever seen. 100% on my bucket list
Get a multi-port HDMI extension cable+grommet to attach to the outside of the arcade, plug 1 end into the monitor and the other end into whatever computer you have in the case / Rpi, then you can use like a 6 inch hdmi cable between the 2 ports externally to bridge them, but if you want to attach the rpi to external TV or something you can remove the 6 inch cable and plug in a normal HDMI to your TV, or you can remove the 6 inch cable and attach an external device like the steam deck to the arcade's monitor (probably need a USB extension for that too though )
As someone who has built their own Arcade machines, a couple of thoughts:
1. That machine is crying out for a monitor bezel to hide the monitor edges. Plexi glass spray painted black from the back and mask the needed viewing area and mount it in front of the monitor.
2. If you still want to use the steam deck, you could add a coin door to the front of the cab and open it up and dock it in the cab. Then when you want to grab the steam deck, open the coin door and take it out of the dock.
This is so rad. The only way to make this better (for me personally) is to double it up and set up for "Time Crisis."
Amazing Bob
Good stuff man, really cool video, cheers!
This whole thing flew over my head but it’s still looks really cool
Gilfoyle! 😆
I started a Pi/Pico project and even bought real component joysticks and buttons. Never made it past the woodworking stage to build the deck to mount the controllers/buttons though. Also never found a good monitor to use. I like the old table top head-to-head look, but I wasn't sure that would be very practical. I think I'd like to go with a table top that can tilt up and be used at seated/couch level as well.
Anyway, I recently started looking at how to get more use out of my SteamDeck and now UA-cam finally sent your video my way. I like that display. Have you seen any other display since then that would be a good alternative. I haven't dove into the comments yet... perhaps there are some recommendations there.
Anyway, I think you've sold me on the SteamDeck and if I heard right the Pico controller is possible with SteamDeck... hopefully my buttons/controllers/pico support xinput or are worth the extra effort if they don't.
Thanks for the inspiration. Now to go through the dozens of videos and tools to get the SteamDeck configured...
Would absolutely adore an update to this a year later!
That’s crazy, you’re crazy. I love it and I want it too.
I've been wanting to see one of those LG Dualup monitors for a arcade cabinet build since I first heard of them as it seemed like the perfect option to me as soon as I heard about it.
I never knew I wanted one of these XD thanks Bob
Dammit Bob! I have an Alexa command that is word for word "Turn on the Arcade" so thanks for turning on my Sega Blast City and emulation PC.
This is pretty cool and a unique take on the arcade box. I'm sure you are aware of valve releasing steam OS at some point so you can install it on any PC. Wonder if you'll go back to that and maybe put that on your aya neo. Cool stuff though Bob
