I don't really see what's particularly exciting here, it's visually just a bit bigger Switch. Even the game they choose to reveal looks too samey, I love MK but if I didn't take the time to really look at the models I would have thought it was MK8 again.
If they have a Mario Maker 3, this is definitely a really good system for drawing while the switch is docked, hell it's arguably better than the touch screen. Plus just generally a lot of games could make very good use of a mouse, I could see fps games using it.
Honestly just having a whole new console with all these new dates and surprises to look forward to is just really exciting on its own. Feels like we’re back in 2017 again.
It's likely that all of the Labo games will be considered "incompatible". The games may still work, but they all use specific joycon functions and rely on the Switch 1 joycon size to fit in the peripherals.
I have a steam deck, but for me they’re incomparable systems. People don’t buy Nintendo for their power, but for their games. Also I didn’t ever get a Switch 1, so going and replaying the old switch games I’ve always wanted to finish, aswell as the new, is very exciting for me
When my son is old enough to use one of these, I'll get to experience it (when he wants to co-op) as someone who hasn't played a Nintendo game in almost 20 years. I'm just hoping you can jailbreak these.
Yes you are right They are two different things especially since that's a PC handheld and this is a console. Steam deck also uses x86 (IDK if you know what that is) but x86 systems don't have good battery life or efficiency on battery
I like to believe that DK look alike is actually Donkey Kong Junior :D It looks closer to the original SNES sprite than it does DK in any iteration. Maybe DK Jr is just older

One very cool thing that people have spotted in the mario kart part is a glowing yellow thingy when there are a lot of the racers, and many people think that it's a desert wonder seed! Which makes a lot of sense with mario looking more similar to his wonder design.

Now why would they do that unless they know that people are gonna need a way to charge their joycons now that they won’t fit on the switch 2. Highly doubt it. They will sell the SW2 controllers separate, and promote that. They might allow the SW2 controllers to connect to the SW1. Kind of like what Sony did with the PS4 and PS4 in terms of controller support. TL:DR - It's all about money. Accessories do bring in nice profits and revenue.
Some sound speculations: C button could be a Chat or Community button, meaning finally we get some actual proper online services. Dock is just a dock. No extra hardware inside for 'casting'. June/July release schedule.
Think about it. Casting would be a very natural progression from the Wii U being a prototype. I completely expect the Switch 2 to have a multi-screen option.
I mean, while I never broke the rails themselves I basically wore them out on both the joycons and the switch. As I used them more and more heavily the joycons would just slide back out if I tried to play in handheld mode, and eventually one side of my switch couldn’t register a joycon as connected anymore. It could charge the joycon, and would register the joycon as connected via bluetooth, but that’s it. I wasn’t able to play in handheld mode again until I got the crkd controller, since it keeps the switch in handheld mode while still using a wired connection. To be fair, I’m not the gentlest with my things, but I’m also not rough with them the way I was when I was a kid. And like you said, the rails are definitely less of a fail point than the ds hinges, which I absolutely managed to break as a kid or even the 3ds hinges, which I didn’t break but I clearly did something to because they’re not quite right anymore.
I'm pretty gentle with my consoles and my switch's rails have slowly worn down over time too. They aren't completely bonked on handheld but they're starting to have issues connecting while charging and registering a bit. I think they're just a flaw in design for long term use tbh. My joycons def struggle with clicking into my joycon grip tho.
I wanted to comment that my friend has a switch where the right joy-con rail is pretty much gone. Lol. it doesn't work with any other joy-con except the one that it originally came with. And it slides out so easy without even touching the button. 😂 They are definitely a point of failure if you're not careful.
People saying that the Steam Deck is going to ruin the Switch 2 are definitely overestimating the install base of that device. The Steam Deck is a cool device, but yeah, it has only sold about 10 million units worldwide since launch, whereas the Switch has sold nearly 150 million. The Steam Deck is not taking a bite out of the Switch's success at all, it serves a different audience completely, and its a niche audience. And there's nothing wrong with that, the Steam Deck was not meant to compete with the Switch, Valve made it abundantly clear that was not their goal. Valve's entire purpose with the Steam Deck was to make PC gaming more accessible. To them, selling 10 million is a big win when it would be a massive failure for Nintendo. Valve created a device that serves their niche nicely, and it's making them a nice bit of extra money. I think a lot of people in this community misunderstand what the draw of the Switch really is for the mainstream. To people in our community, the draw is the ability to play big AAA games on the go as well as at home. And while that is a draw for plenty in the mainstream as well, the versatility of the Switch often gets overlooked. It's not just the fact that it's portable, it's the fact that it's extremely versatile that people miss. Handheld and docked are great options, but there's also tabletop play, the fact that the controller detach and can be used to play in various different ways. The kind of versatility the Switch has that is absent in mobile devices without extra peripherals, AND it has the big name AAA games as well as Nintendo's exclusives. This kind of versatility is something the Steam Deck lacks, since that device is squarely focused on handheld and TV play, since the controllers don't detach and have extra features. These options may not seem like much, as I am sure most people here don't use anything other than handheld and TV modes, but they do get used a ton by mainstream audiences. The fact that there are so many options to playing games on Switch makes it such a useful entertainment device to have around. And now they are adding the ability to use the joycons like computer mice? Yeah, that opens up A LOT of possibilities for games like first-person shooters, RTS games, and even MMO's that all work significantly better with a mouse in hand. This just enhances the versatility of the hardware! A kind of versatility that, again, handheld PC's simply don't have, since they give up versatility for having more raw horsepower. I've lost count of how many times my friends and family are together to play games, and we boot up the Switch, and the joycons and pro-controllers get passed around to ensure everyone gets to play. Some people have pro-controllers, some have two joycons, some have only one joycon. Everyone gets to play due to the versatility this system has.
10 million is generous, its probably sold 5. its impressive considering its order only and not advertised but nowhere near the switch. also imo it just isnt good as a handheld due to how large it is and how unintuitive the OS is.

The last official number of Steam Deck sold is in "the multiple millions" I sincerely doubt it'd even reach 5M units sold. People simply don't know how niche handheld PCs are.

There are physical slips to hold the ganmepads just in case anyone is wondering. It's not held on simply by magnetic force - if magnets are in there, it's to stop them from wiggling, creaking and making clicky sounds like the old ones.
Being late to the party pays off again! But for real, I love backwards compatibility, especially in an era where people are increasingly concerned with game preservation (my logic being the longer a game is actively playable on one or more supported consoles, and the more consoles a game is available on period, the easier it is to preserve; BoTW is now available on three of them, for example, counting the Wii U)
I am most excited about the mouse capabilities in the joy-cons. You could play real-time-strategy games, first-person shooters, ect. Plus, making levels in Mario Maker when the Switch 2 is docked won't feel like purgatory anymore!

Just bc it’s hollow not a full rectangle doesn’t mean it’s flimsy. My phone case had a hollow circular stand on the back and it doesn’t feel flimsy at all. It’s all about the hinge and I doubt Nintendo would go backwards in terms of durability/stability

100% agreed. Its cool to have a beefed up switch but still. It looks nearly identical and thats quite boring in my personal view. Nintendo were great innovators once but now it seems they are playing it safe. Totk was basically a botw dlc so i think they need to step up a bit more.
Indeed the leak did damage to the release event, but to be honest, such little over 2 minutes movie should be shown long time ago, not months after sending prototypes and other info to accessories manufacturers.
I agree they should have shown it sooner, but they also wanted to squeeze one more holiday season out of the Switch 1. I think if the mainstream people who don't follow leaks knew before/during the holidays that the Switch 2 was immenite, not as many would have bought Switch 1s as a gift

Supposedly it's going to have a regular LCD screen instead OLED from what it was leaked. Maybe those 2 SKUs are not for different colors but for a cheaper LCD model to not pass the 349-399 barrier and a more expensive OLED model?
I believe the shape of the kickstand is purposeful to accommodate peripherals to plug into the top USB-C port and attach to the back…like a battery pack and *possibly second screen. Also-nice video Wulff den!
The only thing I'm nervous about is that kickstand. However, my Switch lives in its dock, I assume I'll do the same thing with the Switch 2, if I get one, so I'm not toooooo nervous about a flimsy kickstand. I have a regular Switch, and the kickstand there isn't great, this looks better in that aspect.
Kickstand will be fine. Think about how flimsy the OG stand was. This looks worse than the OLED stand, but still a million times better than the original. Probably made of metal like the OLED stand as well.
I think the C button stands for “Campus”, which leaks say is the codename for Nintendo’s new voice chat/group chat system. My guess is it will bring up a Discord-like overlay for joining a call, muting people, etc
Looks like Nintendo basically addressed all the issues with the first switch and made it the most versatile and port friendly system ever. The craziest thing to think about is this also means a spiritual continuation and support for the original switch which would probably make the longest running console in history. Wild lol
My least favorite part of the design honestly. In the future when we inevitably get colored joycons it’s going to be kinda weird to have mismatched colors inside the console. Not that you will see it but it’s just the point.
I'm pretty sure he means premium in terms of build quality, not power (which I'd still doubt considering how notoriously cheap Nintendo is with their hardware). You can make a high quality device with lower specs. We know based on its chipset that the Switch 2 is only a bit stronger than the Steam Deck, and significantly weaker than the new AI9 chips. But, considering that Nintendo always heavily underclocks their devices to improve battery life and thermals, it'll probably have near parity with deck and just be boosted by frame gen. IMO that is a terrible place to start for a console that is supposed to last 6+ years, but I'd love to be proven wrong.

I think it's a control button, rumours say there's more social aspects, party chats like xbox etc - I think this button is going to open up some sort of overlay, control screen to manage this stuff. Different to the home screen.
8:44 That is absolutely a point of failure. My son dropped his switch once and I had to buy replacement pieces for the clips that hold it in. And on my OLED switch one of my older joycons just stopped holding on at some point. The plastic they use there is incredibly soft. I would assume it is so the switch rails themselves do not break when it is dropped so the failure point falls onto the joycon instead of the switch unit.
The new form factor will make peripherals like Labo or ring fit not compatible and as you said, the potentially missing IR sensor games, otherwise i cant see a reason most software wont work just fine.
I believe the the C button stands for “cast” so people can play on the TV using the tablet and bring back some of those Wii U-like features for some games when mirror mode isn’t being used.
He said that too and honestly, that’d be an awesome idea. Follows along with their universal IP plan because now there’s no previous system the Switch can’t play. (Also allowing them to go harder on piracy and emulation if they do bring all platforms to the Switch)

The only games that I can think of that wouldn't be forwards compatible would be Ring Fit Adventure and Nintendo Labo for the different-sized joycons. Nothing else really comes to mind.

14:40 I really doubt that there will be a official statement about aim to 4K res. Current gen consoles barely do it in 30FPS, and even then more often than not it's upscaled. So i would guess that at best we will have 4k output, but no aim for that resolution.
Wait, actually the "mice" like that is genius for table top mode, it also explain why the screen is much bigger now. At that angle you hold the the joycon you can easily press the face buttons at the same time let the optical handle the right/left stick movements, it make even easier to press the common combinations like X+A, Y+B
As a left-handed person, if the joy-cons can be used as a mouse, I see the optical sensor on the left joy-con as an absolute win. I am always forced to use my right hand because they rarely make left-handed mice
It makes sense to have a share button on both controllers and a home button on the 1st controller only. So both players can share a screenshot to the console, but only player one can go to the home screen.

It'd be really funny if that 'mouse' sensor is actually the vitality sensor from many years ago. It looks like it has an led and detector side by side, which are usually used in vitality sensors.
I worked at a game store for over a decade. The joycon rails have been a massive point of failure for kids that don't take care of stuff. I've had to manually pull rails off of Switches when kids have broken them so hard that the controller rails stay on the system.
from frame stepping the video I was able to identify: Mario, Luigi, Bowser, Peach, Toad, DK, Yoshi, Daisy, Wario, Luna, Baby Mario, Baby Luigi, Baby Peach, Baby Daisy, Toadette, Waluigi, Pauline, Birdo, King Boo, Shyguy. There's a few that I can't make out at all, but I'm guessing MK9 will have 24 player support, as that's the number of start spots at the start line.
The strap connector looks like a stretched doughnut, seems like it's not just a small hole for the sensor, but a complete passthrough. (Maybe it was just your wording.) The shoulder sr sl buttons look better, but it looks like you'll have to make do with them when just using the strap attachment. Would it be good enough in fist orientation for games like Arms?
you know when it comes to the Buttons being big or large or small it’s actually no-brainer meaning that they could just make more joy con controllers with smaller or bigger buttons as there are detachable.
I do wish that the rumors that they were going to color the buttons in rainbow had come true, the color buttons of the super Nintendo are just so nice.

Why do you think not every game is gonna be 4K? Easy: every game targets 1080p at max, for those who do they always get upscaled to 4K because that's done by an extra chip. At least that would be my theory! For the 540p to 1080p makes a lot of sense that Switch 1 games will only be 1080p unless the developers dedicate their time to adjust it for the Switch 2 hardware, which makes sense. If the Switch 2 internally can run the game at 1080p it automatically upscales to 4K when docked.
Mouse? New Mario Paint? A mic also on the console could be part of controlling audio quality and experience. Phones often have 3 microphones. Mine has 2, some have 4. "This allows for better noise cancellation and improved voice quality during calls by utilizing multiple microphone inputs to isolate the user's voice from background noise"
C button is definitely for cursor. It might be a cursor nub too so that you can use it to move the cursor without removing the joycon for certain games
@10:37 I just finished watching Retro Game Corps and he mentioned that there was a Switch 2 dock in the wild. It was reported that the dock was very chunky from the backside possibly to accommodate for cooling. If the "c" button is for casting the Switch 2 to the dock, that implies dual screen function and compatibility with digital Wii U, DS, and 3DS games. DS games on the Wii U was an underrated feature.
My suspicion is the "C" button is a toggle for "mouse mode" to put a cursor on the screen so you can use the joy-cons as a mouse.
Nintedo isn't going do that they would just sell you a mouse to plug in for 40 bucks instead

I wanted to comment that my friend has a switch where the right joy-con rail is pretty much gone. Lol. it doesn't work with any other joy-con except the one that it originally came with. And it slides out so easy without even touching the button. 😂 They are definitely a point of failure if you're not careful.
People saying that the Steam Deck is going to ruin the Switch 2 are definitely overestimating the install base of that device. The Steam Deck is a cool device, but yeah, it has only sold about 10 million units worldwide since launch, whereas the Switch has sold nearly 150 million. The Steam Deck is not taking a bite out of the Switch's success at all, it serves a different audience completely, and its a niche audience.
And there's nothing wrong with that, the Steam Deck was not meant to compete with the Switch, Valve made it abundantly clear that was not their goal. Valve's entire purpose with the Steam Deck was to make PC gaming more accessible. To them, selling 10 million is a big win when it would be a massive failure for Nintendo. Valve created a device that serves their niche nicely, and it's making them a nice bit of extra money.
I think a lot of people in this community misunderstand what the draw of the Switch really is for the mainstream. To people in our community, the draw is the ability to play big AAA games on the go as well as at home. And while that is a draw for plenty in the mainstream as well, the versatility of the Switch often gets overlooked. It's not just the fact that it's portable, it's the fact that it's extremely versatile that people miss. Handheld and docked are great options, but there's also tabletop play, the fact that the controller detach and can be used to play in various different ways. The kind of versatility the Switch has that is absent in mobile devices without extra peripherals, AND it has the big name AAA games as well as Nintendo's exclusives. This kind of versatility is something the Steam Deck lacks, since that device is squarely focused on handheld and TV play, since the controllers don't detach and have extra features.
These options may not seem like much, as I am sure most people here don't use anything other than handheld and TV modes, but they do get used a ton by mainstream audiences. The fact that there are so many options to playing games on Switch makes it such a useful entertainment device to have around. And now they are adding the ability to use the joycons like computer mice? Yeah, that opens up A LOT of possibilities for games like first-person shooters, RTS games, and even MMO's that all work significantly better with a mouse in hand. This just enhances the versatility of the hardware! A kind of versatility that, again, handheld PC's simply don't have, since they give up versatility for having more raw horsepower.
I've lost count of how many times my friends and family are together to play games, and we boot up the Switch, and the joycons and pro-controllers get passed around to ensure everyone gets to play. Some people have pro-controllers, some have two joycons, some have only one joycon. Everyone gets to play due to the versatility this system has.
10 million is generous, its probably sold 5. its impressive considering its order only and not advertised but nowhere near the switch. also imo it just isnt good as a handheld due to how large it is and how unintuitive the OS is.

The last official number of Steam Deck sold is in "the multiple millions" I sincerely doubt it'd even reach 5M units sold.

There are physical slips to hold the ganmepads just in case anyone is wondering. It's not held on simply by magnetic force - if magnets are in there, it's to stop them from wiggling, creaking and making clicky sounds like the old ones.

But for real, I love backwards compatibility, especially in an era where people are increasingly concerned with game preservation (my logic being the longer a game is actively playable on one or more supported consoles, and the more consoles a game is available on period, the easier it is to preserve; BoTW is now available on three of them, for example, counting the Wii U)
I am most excited about the mouse capabilities in the joy-cons. You could play real-time-strategy games, first-person shooters, ect. Plus, making levels in Mario Maker when the Switch 2 is docked won't feel like purgatory anymore!

100% agreed. Its cool to have a beefed up switch but still. It looks nearly identical and thats quite boring in my personal view. Nintendo were great innovators once but now it seems they are playing it safe. Totk was basically a botw dlc so i think they need to step up a bit more.
Indeed the leak did damage to the release event, but to be honest, such little over 2 minutes movie should be shown long time ago, not months after sending prototypes and other info to accessories manufacturers.
I agree they should have shown it sooner, but they also wanted to squeeze one more holiday season out of the Switch 1. I think if the mainstream people who don't follow leaks knew before/during the holidays that the Switch 2 was immenite, not as many would have bought Switch 1s as a gift

I believe the shape of the kickstand is purposeful to accommodate peripherals to plug into the top USB-C port and attach to the back…like a battery pack and *possibly second screen. Also-nice video Wulff den!
The only thing I'm nervous about is that kickstand. However, my Switch lives in its dock, I assume I'll do the same thing with the Switch 2, if I get one, so I'm not toooooo nervous about a flimsy kickstand.

Kickstand will be fine. Think about how flimsy the OG stand was. This looks worse than the OLED stand, but still a million times better than the original. Probably made of metal like the OLED stand as well.
I use my Kid Icarus Uprising stand on my Switch, because I never trusted that Switch stand xD

I'm pretty sure he means premium in terms of build quality, not power (which I'd still doubt considering how notoriously cheap Nintendo is with their hardware). You can make a high quality device with lower specs.
We know based on its chipset that the Switch 2 is only a bit stronger than the Steam Deck, and significantly weaker than the new AI9 chips. But, considering that Nintendo always heavily underclocks their devices to improve battery life and thermals, it'll probably have near parity with deck and just be boosted by frame gen.
IMO that is a terrible place to start for a console that is supposed to last 6+ years, but I'd love to be proven wrong.

I think it's a control button, rumours say there's more social aspects, party chats like xbox etc - I think this button is going to open up some sort of overlay, control screen to manage this stuff. Different to the home screen.

8:44 That is absolutely a point of failure. My son dropped his switch once and I had to buy replacement pieces for the clips that hold it in. And on my OLED switch one of my older joycons just stopped holding on at some point. The plastic they use there is incredibly soft. I would assume it is so the switch rails themselves do not break when it is dropped so the failure point falls onto the joycon instead of the switch unit.
The new form factor will make peripherals like Labo or ring fit not compatible and as you said, the potentially missing IR sensor games, otherwise i cant see a reason most software wont work just fine.
I’m worried about the connectors sticking out of the screen but it will make for a more positive connection as the console ages

The only games that I can think of that wouldn't be forwards compatible would be Ring Fit Adventure and Nintendo Labo for the different-sized joycons. Nothing else really comes to mind.

14:40 I really doubt that there will be a official statement about aim to 4K res. Current gen consoles barely do it in 30FPS, and even then more often than not it's upscaled. So i would guess that at best we will have 4k output, but no aim for that resolution.
Wait, actually the "mice" like that is genius for table top mode, it also explain why the screen is much bigger now. At that angle you hold the the joycon you can easily press the face buttons at the same time let the optical handle the right/left stick movements, it make even easier to press the common combinations like X+A, Y+B

As a left-handed person, if the joy-cons can be used as a mouse, I see the optical sensor on the left joy-con as an absolute win. I am always forced to use my right hand because they rarely make left-handed mice
It makes sense to have a share button on both controllers and a home button on the 1st controller only. So both players can share a screenshot to the console, but only player one can go to the home screen.

It'd be really funny if that 'mouse' sensor is actually the vitality sensor from many years ago. It looks like it has an led and detector side by side, which are usually used in vitality sensors.

There is a real possibility that Nintendo uses hall effect sticks since they did have to pay out on the joycon failure rate.
I worked at a game store for over a decade. The joycon rails have been a massive point of failure for kids that don't take care of stuff. I've had to manually pull rails off of Switches when kids have broken them so hard that the controller rails stay on the system.
from frame stepping the video I was able to identify: Mario, Luigi, Bowser, Peach, Toad, DK, Yoshi, Daisy, Wario, Luna, Baby Mario, Baby Luigi, Baby Peach, Baby Daisy, Toadette, Waluigi, Pauline, Birdo, King Boo, Shyguy. There's a few that I can't make out at all, but I'm guessing MK9 will have 24 player support, as that's the number of start spots at the start line.

The strap connector looks like a stretched doughnut, seems like it's not just a small hole for the sensor, but a complete passthrough. (Maybe it was just your wording.) The shoulder sr sl buttons look better, but it looks like you'll have to make do with them when just using the strap attachment. Would it be good enough in fist orientation for games like Arms?

Funny you mention the rail being a point of failure. My joycon rail was a spot where a switch I previously owned failed.
you know when it comes to the Buttons being big or large or small it’s actually no-brainer meaning that they could just make more joy con controllers with smaller or bigger buttons as there are detachable.

Why do you think not every game is gonna be 4K? Easy: every game targets 1080p at max, for those who do they always get upscaled to 4K because that's done by an extra chip. At least that would be my theory!
For the 540p to 1080p makes a lot of sense that Switch 1 games will only be 1080p unless the developers dedicate their time to adjust it for the Switch 2 hardware, which makes sense. If the Switch 2 internally can run the game at 1080p it automatically upscales to 4K when docked.
Mouse? New Mario Paint? A mic also on the console could be part of controlling audio quality and experience. Phones often have 3 microphones. Mine has 2, some have 4.

C button is definitely for cursor. It might be a cursor nub too so that you can use it to move the cursor without removing the joycon for certain games
@10:37 I just finished watching Retro Game Corps and he mentioned that there was a Switch 2 dock in the wild. It was reported that the dock was very chunky from the backside possibly to accommodate for cooling. If the "c" button is for casting the Switch 2 to the dock, that implies dual screen function and compatibility with digital Wii U, DS, and 3DS games. DS games on the Wii U was an underrated feature.
