@@JepsOutdoorAdventures - I understand your perception that carrying cocked and locked in rough terrain could be a safety concern. However, the general consensus by 1911 experts is the grip safety and slide lock safeties are more robust than you are giving credit.
Carrying cocked and locked does take some mental adjustment to alter the Perception the pistol is more susceptible to unintentional discharge then a double action or single action striker fired weapons.
There are a huge number of 1911s out there and you just really don’t hear about unintentional discharges that didn’t involve someone’s hand being on the grip and finger on the trigger.
I went through the same emotional process myself. I in fact tried to see if I could get the hammer to drop by manipulating the trigger & tapping on an unloaded cocked and UNLOCKED pistol that didn’t have the grip safety activated. I could not get the pistol to drop the hammer without the pistol being in my hand and my finger on the trigger. This pistol is a colt 70 series that has about a 2.5 lb trigger pull.
A good holster with positive retention should take care of the concern over the pistol coming out of the holster accidentally from contacting terrain.
Again, if you’re not comfortable carrying condition one (cocked & locked) then don’t. But I would Choose a different firearm then carrying a 1911 with a hammer down on a round in the chamber (which i’m under the impression actually is dangerous in some 1911 pistols).
Again, I’m no expert. It’s ok if you don’t agree. But I don’t carry a pistol that’s not “service ready” as I’m concerned I may not have time to cock a hammer or rack a slide. But to each there own…. Thanks for all your videos. You have provided some very informative content 👍

BTW,the 1911in 45acp was first tested prior to it’s adaptation by the US Army on live horses, mules, and cattle. The US Army still had a calvary at that time and shooting the enemy’s mount out from under them was very common. The weapon had to be capable of one shot drops on large animals as well as humans. It’s well known that the 1911 passed the testing trials with flying colors.

There is a massive difference between just mass of the mammal and penetration
Grizzly and even black bear fat can be 3-8in thick, and then cranial plates can stock even .40 s&w rounds.
You can shoot the bear 10 times but if they're barely getting past the bone/fat, he'll be injured and really angry.

Thanks for making this video. The .45 is likely an ideal round for carry in areas where the potentially dangerous animals are limited to the less than gigantic size such as black bear, mountain lion, and perhaps hogs. I've heard rumor that the more likely dangerous predator you can run into is other men. So, the .45 even in a solid non-expanding round would also work pretty well also as an anti-personnel round which has been proven through history.

I just discovered your channel and subscribed immediately. You have a mature, informed, no-nonsense presentation we older folks appreciate.
I do have to screech at you a bit, though. A 1911 is very safe to carry cocked and locked. That's how it was designed and is nothing to be nervous about. True, I'm an "older gentleman" who grew up on semi-autos with thumb safeties and that's my comfort zone, but re-holstering my striker-fired auto with no external hammer or tactile thumb safety
finally creeped me out enough to switch back to John Browning's invention for daily carry. It takes just a nanosecond to sweep the safety off during the draw.
To each his own, but the safeties on a 1911 are not a bad thing.

It’s for that reason I ditched the 10mm in favor of the 45. Versatility. I love 10mm but it is not ideal for concealed carry or personal protection outside the woods. More power than necessary, more recoil and blast. The 45 is a great round for both woods and the hoods, I load my Glock 21 with 45 super 255 grn Hardcast in the woods and switch to hollow points for a low pressure, subsonic easy to control self defense cartridge with proven man stopping power.

@@mikerobinson8734Yes. For the mountains I always have a revolver. But, I would feel safe with my 1911. The .45 auto cartridge is excellent for soft targets, intended for a big hole, lots of damage and shock. I prefer the .45 auto over most calibers for two legged self defense. Although, the .38 Special is another great option. I can fit the .38 +p LCRx in my pocket with ease and no print. But I love the sound of that big .45 auto and recoil is minimal out of an all-steel 1911.

A 1911 is safest carried cocked and locked(hammer back and thumb safety on). In this condition it is safer than a Glock because of on a 1911 you put the safety back on before reholstering. It is dangerous to carry a 1911 with a round in the chamber and putting the hammer down on a live round let alone pulling the hammer back before shooting unless you are in a Hollywood movie. Anyway, good video. Very informative on 45ACP for the trail. Just what I was looking for, and you are right about Glock like guns(including M&P and Sig and such), lighter weight, more rounds, simple, durable, reliable. If you have a 1911 though, make sure its a good one and you’ll be just fine.

The .45 /230 ball rounds from a 1911 was the best car door and windshield rounds that we tested. The other rounds were .357 Magnums (all weights from 110 grain to 180 grains) and did not equal the .45ACP, but rather shed their jackets, especially when fired at different angles through the wind shield.

With the weight of the long slide you do not need a comp. If I had a regular slide I would just go super. You only need to swap out a few parts to do so and no ugly comp is required.

Good job. I’m glad to see you referencing TKO factor over muzzle energy. A .357 with 110 grain bullets will have plenty of muzzle energy, but that’s not going to help much on a tough critter. Definitely no FMJ RN’s they might penetrate well, but they just don’t do much damage along the way. I actually prefer a revolver loaded with heavy wide-nosed cast bullets that wouldn’t necessarily feed through an auto.

Sometimes people get the notion of carrying a 1911 with the hammer back being the same as holstering a revolver with the hammer back. Which is a scary thought. However, they are different. While the trigger on many 1911s are pretty light, they have a manual safety as well as a grip safety. Taking this into consideration, they are actually safer than many other pistols. I can shoot a 1911 more accurately and with greater speed(probably those slender grips, light trigger, and weight of the pistol are helping) than a Glock 21. Though I'll give the Glock 21 credit for having greater capacity since those mags hold 13 rounds.

The benefit of an all steel frame 1911 platform is the fact that the 45acp can be loaded to much higher pressures with 45 Super brass or going with wildcatting 308 small rifle primed brass and cutting down for 450 SMC - which 20yrs ago was called the 45-08. If you handload its easy to match and surpass the Buffalo Bore woodsman load. Handloading the 45acp to those pressures can be done safely with attention and upgrading to 45 Super with heavier recoil, mainspring, firing pin spring, as well as going with a flat bottom firing pin stop and a heavy duty extractor. Also using 45 Super and 45 +P rated Starline brass. I would only do this on a steel frame 1911 not polymer guns. If I backpack in non grizzly bear country, I take a Kahr CW45 ( polymer frame) as its super lightweight with 6 rd factory mag and if I want it can take stock 8 rd 1911 mags, I see no problem shooting the +P Buffalo Bore ammo in that gun, but dont shoot 45 Super loads in it. Still consider taking a look at the ease of reloading 45ACP (maybe the easiest of all cartridges to reload for) as it might save you a ton of money as well as making custom ammunition for your guns that would otherwise be unavailable

But, someone did give me a plastic striker fired pistol, a Springfield XD45 which I found to be lighter, and has a 13+1 capacity and is still lighter when fully loaded than my 1911 with 8+1. With 2 spare mags, I'm at 40 rounds on my person of .45ACP. Why carry that much? Why not?
But, at the range, it is the 1911 that still puts a smile on my face when I shoot it. It hasn't been retired, and I recently rebuilt it as the springs were getting worn. The plastic fantastic just doesn't make me smile the same way, even though it is reliable and accurate enough. I guess you could say the 1911 has a soul?

I REALLY like the short, crisp SA trigger on the 1911, Greatly aids in accuracy. (40 misses dont count...). Proper Maintenance Matters. For a full size 1911, you need to replace the main recoil spring ever 1,000 rounds, and the trigger and firing pin springs every 2,000. On a compact, every 500. Proper Lube, too. I wonder what brand of load he was using for his 230 grain .45 ACP bear attack. If it was Speer lawman 230 grain, it would be a bit on the hotter side. If it was federal American eagle, it would possibly be on the average end (from many of the tests I’ve seen). I carry a Glock 21 everyday and it’s hard to beat its firepower in such a lightweight package. I have a mix of loads I carry depending the time of year. In the summer, I carry Federal HST 230 grain .45 ACP, Winchester T-series 230 grain .45 ACP, and Speer Gold Dot 200 grain +P .45 ACP. It really depends where I am going. In the fall and winter, I carry Hornady critical duty 220 grain +P. With heavy clothing, it’s nice to not have a hollow point that won’t clog. I will carry standard 230 grain FMJ (in Winchester white box or Remington UMC) in my backup magazine. If I’m in the woods, I’ll carry either the critical duty 220 grain +P or standard 230 grain FMJ (again in Winchester white box or Remington UMC). I have yet to have to fire it on dangerous game, but I took a whitetail with Remington UMC 230 grain FMJ with ease. Hard-cast may be in my future, but I’ve found I haven’t needed them. I’ll be hiking in the smoky mountains in the fall and I have no doubt that (God Forbid I have to) it will take a black bear.

VERY nice video. Thank you for putting in the effort to get all the data you presented. I live in Ohio and most of my life we didn't have to worry about bears. There were NONE. However, over the past 10 years our State has gained a population of them and that has changed preparation for backpacking through forests.
Just a couple points, in your analogy of horsepower versus torque, a lot of people don't know that horsepower is merely a calculation of power, where as torque is an actual measurement of force. And when it comes to carrying a cocked and locked 1911, if a person is used to doing what it takes and is an active person, the weight is a non-issue. Also, people have their own personal comfort levels of safety. The 1911 being cocked and locked, the safety is on so it can't fire, and if something were to happen to the safety to cause it to be bumped off (difficult to do while holstered) it STILL cannot fire because of the grip safety not being depressed. So it is safe to carry that way. Being a single action firearm, the military wanted to be sure it could be carried in the most ready-to-use form, yet still be safe for the soldiers. This was why they demanded the grip safety. The gun was not originally designed with it.

FNX45 Tactical is a double action single action autoloader with 15 round magazines. Regarding 1911s, they are safer to carry in condition one (cocked & locked) than a Glock or any other pistol without a manual safety, of which a 1911 has two.

    Jep,
you say that you are not comfortable with the 1911 cocked and loaded, but do you carry the Glock with it cocked and loaded?
The 1911 has an external safety of which helps keep it safe from negligent misfires when drawing the gun from the holster. The Glocks do not have such a feature and people tend to shot themselves in the leg when drawing the weapon. But both weapons are cocked and ready to rock, just that the 1911 has a lock on it and the Glocks do not.
If you think that just because you do not see the hammer cocked back that that makes a striker fire pistol safer you are sadly mistaken. Basically, one either has a semi-auto pistol that is not cocked and not ready to rock [not good], cocked locked and ready to rock [good and safe], or cocked unlocked and ready to rock [good unsafe, so kind of not good].
And if anybody thinks that people shoot themselves with 1911 as much as they do with Glocks I challenge them to watch the plethora of UA-cam videos of people negligently shooting themselves and find me just one where some one shot themselves with a 1911. And at the same time keep count of how many of those videos were Glock related. So far I have not found one video where someone shot themselves negligently with a 1911, but they have mostly been Glock related. A few with revolvers when they were playing around with them and coking and uncocking them.
Experts as well as cops, who all have lots of training, have shot themselves with Glocks on the draw and re-holstering. While with 1911s only when re-holstering if they had forgetting to set the safety. With revolvers only if they had cocked the hammer back and did not fire it and then forgot to un-cock it and re-holstered it.
Which is better to shot oneself in the leg, because they do not want to have to switch off a safety, and then deal with a bear, or deal with the little time it takes to remember to switch off the safety and then deal with the bear? Or better yet just have a double action revolver (and de-spur the hammer so they can not cock it in the first place, yet it still shoots like a semi-auto by simply pulling the trigger each time they want it to fire) and draw and fire it without worrying about a safety or shooting themselves in the leg when drawing or re-holstering!
The safety is your friend on a semi-auto, and Glocks are not friendly in that way at all. And double action revolvers are the friendliest as they are safe without a safety, and they are always ready to rock without being pre-cocked.
Personally, I carry a 45 Colt fully loaded. The bullets are 250 grain solid copper, going at 1000 fps, with a TKO factor of 16 or a KPS value of 35.7, and it will take on animals upward of 1500 pounds or less. So I do not have to worry about flipping a safety off, nor do I have to worry about shooting my self in the leg when trying to fast draw it in a pinch. And I do not have to worry if I reset the safety either before re-holstering. The only worry with a double action revolver is re-holstering with the hammer cocked back, and if it does not have a spur then that worry is done away with for good.
Also with revolver pistols people do not have to practice "TAP, RACK, and SLAP" like they have to with semi-auto pistols. This procedure takes time that when a bear is charging one may very well not have. And it takes both hands, of which a bear could be chewing on one by this time in the game. Revolvers are an ambidextrous one handed thing that never fail to feed or eject, and if a round does not go off just keep pulling the trigger.
So the only real concern should be which double action revolver one would take to a bear fight? And keep in mind that black bears can be upwards of 600 pounds or so, and grizzlies 1000 or better.
What ever one should choose (a semi-auto or revolver pistol), run the figures of the rounds through the two equations below to see just how big of game one could take down with them. Keep in mind that these two systems are considering a humane kill with a side shot through the lungs and heart of the animal and not a straight on charging scenario, so really the numbers need to be higher than rated below as far as what size animal the rounds will take down quickly. And always choose HARD CAST LEAD or SOLID COPPER/BRASS bullets only, as they penetrate the skulls easier as opposed to deflecting off them.
    1) "Taylor Knock-Out Factor" ( n4lcd.com/calc/)
[bullet weight in grains X speed in feet per second X diameter of the bullet in inches divided by 7,000 = ______ ]
    2) "Killing Power Scale":
[bullet weight in grains X speed in feet per second divided by 7,000 = ______ ]
[Any killing power index system must have some baseline values that define minimums for the weight and/or type of game animals that might be hunted. After considerable deliberation and discussion, Chuck Hawks and Pacos Kelly settled on the following KPS baselines. Understand that these are ultimately judgment calls, so someone who has a different perspective might question particular baseline values. That said, They believe the baselines presented here to be reasonable, though not immutable.]
    Baseline KPS values:
KPS 12.5 or greater: Class 2 game, 50 pounds to about 150 pounds (e.g., average size North American deer, pronghorn, feral hog)
KPS 15 or greater: All Class 2 game, but especially those between about 150 and 300 pounds (e.g., very large whitetail deer and feral hogs, mule deer, caribou, black bear)

KPS 32 or greater: Class 3 game between about 500 and 1000 pounds (e.g., trophy elk, average moose, extremely large black bear)
KPS 35 or greater: All Class 3 game, but especially those between about 1000 and 1500 pounds (e.g., very large moose, eland)
    [45 Colt 250 grain Extreme Penetrator @ 1000 = 35.7]

[45 Colt 250 grain Extreme Penetrator +P @ 1400 = 61.5 (close). As far as pistols this is a 45 Colt Ruger only load]

Don't really understand the aversion to the 1911 "cocked and locked" carry, while suggesting the Glock as the alternative. The 1911 is a very safe firearm to carry in that condition, and frankly, should only be carried in that condition. Compared to the (no external safety) striker-fired offerings, where many people carry IWB pointed at their family planning unit, it doesn't make sense to me. All you do is grasp the grip safety, sweep the thumb safety off, and you then have a nice, crisp, accurate 1911 to fire. The weight is your friend while shooting heavy for caliber +p stuff. The 45 sized Glock is a piece of 2x4 to grip onto. If ammo capacity is a concern above 8 rounds, then go with a M&P M2.0 (S&W has optional 14 round mags for that), FNX45, or something else that isn't a block of wood to try to control.
Back in the day, the 1873 Colt SAA with 5 or 6 shots of 1050 fps 255 cast bullets .45 Colt was enough to stop a horse....or a bear. The 255 grain .45acp+p isn't far off from that same system, but holds 8 rounds and all you have to do is pull the trigger again and again.

I load a lot of 45 acp and so I have tried a lot of loads. what I have settled on as an all around load is my cast and coated 200 grain SWC at right at 1050 fps. if this load will not do it then a 45 acp will not do it. are their commercial ++++P rounds with lighter slugs that are faster? yes but... I have 185 molds and the 200 is a way better alll around bullet for feeding and accuracy... The SWC bullet for 45 was originally a target bullet at low velocity but works great for high velocity my load shoots cloverleaf groups at 25 yards from a sandbag rest. So this is my round of choice for the 45 acp... Glock for tense work? naa.. the grip angle is wrong meaning if you have to point shoot you are screwed. Better to have a gun that points like your finger.. that would be a SAA 1873 or clone or the 1911 or any handgun with those grip angles.

Carrying a 1911 cooked and locked shouldn't be an issue 2 safeties have to be deactivated before it can be fired I'm not trying to argue just throwing it out there!

IF your placement is perfect, any large caliber will do... However you may only get one shot... your round has to easily penetrate the bears skul... onlt 357 or 44 mag can relyably do that... My choice would be a short light 44 mag carbine... mine in a Winchester model 94...weighs six pounds easy to carry..

Not to be picky, but isn't the .45acp referred to the pistol and not the cartridge? I think all reloading manuals refer to the cartridge as the .45 auto nor the .45acp. But, I could be wrong. The all-steel 1911 and .45 auto are still my favorite over any polymers.

I believe you are correct, I just find myself using the term .45 ACP more often than not 👍. And I agree, I like 1911's a lot more than the polymer pistols I've used. They just feel right.

You wanna talk nerve wracking, try lowering the hammer of a 1911 with a live round in the chamber! Carrying cocked and locked is very safe, especially compared to carrying any Glock pattern gun with no safety at all. I know they have a little switch thing on the trigger, but that's equivalent to carrying a 1911 cocked and unlocked, and if it's a series 80 it still has two safeties to disengage (grip and trigger ) compared to the one that's deactivated simply by placing your finger on the trigger. I get it, that cocked hammer just looks dangerous, and in 30 years of carrying one, I've actually had people come up to me twice to tell me that I've accidentally cocked my sidearm. Consider all this and I think you'll become very comfortable with a cocked and locked 1911.

I lived in Alaska for 8 years/spent a LOT of time in the bush. "Bear Protection" and "handgun" (when applied to browns and grizzlies) shouldn't even be in the same sentence. I'd give you a reluctant "maybe" if you KNEW you'd only encounter black bears and insisted on carrying a pistol only. A favorite for AK bear protection is a 45-70 lever gun. FWIW, if you get surprised by a brown/grizzly bear attack, there is almost no chance you are going to get a pistol out of a holster in time to do anything.

Bear spray works sometimes sometimes just passes them off, dirt naps are the only sure way. 45 auto great cartridge for people, dear, or below, but for sure 45 lc ++ and up would be better, 44 mag, 357, 10 mm, 454. 460, 50mag better still and not hollow points, those spread and shock but don't penatrate. Which means more fragile targets, like people, won't be over penatrated, and will recieve greater damage, but large, tough, angry, hopped up on hormones ect. 45 acp will, with proper ammo, squeek by, average wild boor its good but for some domestic wild hybrids reaching 1/2 a ton, some thing bigger would still be better. Your carry fire arm is some thing you bet your life on so carry your best bet, and if your in a mixed target zone wolf and bear nothing says you can't double carry, a high capacity smaller and a lower capacity heavy. The best of both worlds.

With moose watch your distance. The fat round slows at distance. When it hits hide, meat and bone. Up close is good. Depends on your rounds also. 10 mm is thinner so you can actually be slightly more dominate. But a 45 acp will keep up. Great for defence limited at hunting. Bear spray 1st. But may not work well with a sow and cubs. Shot placement. I like 45 acp. Is good all around. Just know what your up against.

Hendershots I have created a ballistics file which contains over 3,500 entries, covering 35 handgun calibers and 25 rifle ones. I mention this to so I can 'rightly' discuss your comment about no handgun having the same power as rifles. Well, this state is a bit too broad, and in the long run, incorrect as well. This tells me that you have not really kept up with the development of handguns and their ammo. First let me list the handguns I am referring to: 1) .460 S&W (2005), 2) .500 S&W (2003), and 3) the .500 Bushwacker (2022). I have all three of these listed in my ballistics file. Here is the max power for manufactured ammo for each: 1) .46- S&W tops out at ~2,885 ft. lbs (Buffalo Bore and Grizzly). 2) .500 S&W tops out at 3,040 ft. lbs. (Buffalo Bore). 3) .500 Bushwacker tops out at 5,027. With regards to the Bushwacker, I could only find ammo made by the company that makes the gun, although there may be some other sources of ammo by now.
So, now let's look at rifles. One of the best overall hunting rifle is the 30-06, with tops out at 3,246 (Buffalo Bore). We can step up the rifle power with the .444 Marlin which is around 3,343 (Underwood), and migrate to the 338 Win Mag up to 4.029 (Hornady Super Performance), and then go to the .378 Weatherby Mag which goes up to a very impressive 5,602 (Hendershots). So, while the 30-06 and the 444 Marlin just beat out the .460 S&W and the .500 S&W, the .500 Bushwacker competes in power with the very high end powerful rifles. Of course, there is more than just power, and all three of these revolvers have very noticeable kick, making the next shot more difficult than with a rifle. But if the rifle is a bolt or lever action, then they become less usable for subsequent shots also. So, I would caution you on toting rifles as the ultimate!
By the way, my file is available to anyone who wants it, and it is free and is released as a PDF file, so it is completely safe and anyone can read, independent of their type of computer you have. The file is too big to use on a cell phone. To get my file, click on my name here, then click on 'About', and either email me or go to my website and find the file there, which you can then download and keep. Besides ballistics info on each round listed, I give the manufacturer, the box price, the price per round, the type of bullet, the ammo rating (when supplied by the retailer), and its availability, plus lots more.

I appreciate you doing these videos on penetration. When it comes to large animal defense with handguns, penetration is all that's important. If the penetration is there, the bear will never know if the velocity was 200 fps faster or slower.
