And btw That's her real voice. No autotune or other 'tricks" back then. You had to SING to prove yourself. Some of today's female 'performers" can't even hold a candle to her majesty.
also her and her brother did ALL Of the background vocals on their recordings. In this video, their LIVE band was lip synching. When karen and richard performed live in concert, this backup band in this video DID sing along with them the background harmonies...
Karen had one of those voices that you hear the first note out of her mouth and you know it's her. For me, she had the most perfect female voice of my generation. Her brother, Richard was responsible for the Carpenter sound, and did all the Layering as you called it. We lost her to early. RIP Karen.
Great brother & sister duo from the 60's-80's. Karen was one of a kind. There will never be another like her. She had such a pure calming voice. And she was a terrific drummer. That was her passion even more than singing. Sadly we lost her so young. Thankfully we have her legacy left in her music. The Carpenters had so many great songs such as "Rainy Days & Mondays", "Superstar", "For All We Know", "A Song For You", "Goodbye To Love", "Top Of The World", "Sing", "Yesterday Once More", "I Won't Last A Day Without You", "Please Mr. Postman", "Only Yesterday", "There's A Kind Of Hush (All Over the World)" & so many more.
Karen was a first-class drummer. It was the thing she loved the most. She was the Carpenters drummer before they convinced her to be the lead singer of the group. You should watch the video of her drumming.
This was their first big hit. Her brother Richard wanted her out front so you don't see her playing the drums very often. She loved playing the drums. She viewed herself as a drummer who happened to sing.
The doubling of the vocals was fairly new back in the 70s. This is when stereo took over from mono and speakers were made for High Fidelity as well. These 2 inventions changed music and how recording was done.
Karen has such a beautiful voice… And her brother Richard was amazing at songwriting and producing! Gone way too soon… Be sure to listen to their song superstar!! Nice reaction
Her brother Richard Carpenter that plays the piano/keyboard 🎹 did the arrangements and engineering of their music. Karen began drumming. She didn't want to be the lead singer out in front away from the drum 🥁 set. Your hearing an angel 😇 R.I.P. Karen Carpenter ✌️♥️🙏🙏🙏
Karen Carpenter's voice stops you in your tracks and passes your heart and hits your soul. Nobody else can do that IMHO. She is known as a top tier drummer (Jazz was her influence).
R.I.P. Karen Carpenter ✌️❤️🙏🙏🙏 she should do a reaction to her drumming marathon she shows her proficiency on drums of many types all in a row from the Carpenter's variety tv show ✌️♥️🙏🙏🙏
Karen Carpenter is easily one of the greatest female singers of all times. Her amazing smooth voice has a calming effect, and along with her brother they both created and made incredible memorable music. Karen, rest in peace, 1983 gone way too soon. Check these great Carpenters songs that are often forgotten, Hurting Each Other, Ordinary Fool, and Bless the Beast and The Children, I promise they won't disappoint.
I'd say Karen has the best female voice ever recorded. Aretha Franklin and Barbra Streisand may do their vocal gymnastics, but Karen can sing just one line and melt your heart. Like you said, it gives you goosebumps!
Karen’s voice is like no other. Dark and rich and so emotional and she’s a fantastic drummer. Her Brother Richard is a fantastic composer. Karen’s voice can make you cry. You can watch UA-cam’s of Karen’s exceptional drumming.
Karen Carpenter had such a beautiful voice. Her drumming skills were awesome. Singing and playing the drums is exceptionally difficult and she did it with ease. Love your reaction!
Love to hear younger people enjoying the music from my youth. 2 suggestions, Rainy Days and Mondays and Superstar (official videos). Keep up the good work!
GOAT voice. Suggestions: Rainy Days and Mondays, A Song for You (album version, with a killer saxophone solo), Let Me Be the One, and I Won’t Last a Day Without You.
I have since reviewed her drumming in a few videos and she has blown my mind! Such an incredible player! Thanks for watching and have a Happy New Year!!
🥰 Tons of Carpenters songs to dig into! Rainy Days and Mondays, It's Going to Take Some Time, Yesterday Once More, Only Yesterday, Hurting Each Other.......it's endless!😊❤
Love seeing Karen on drums. It's too bad people didn't realize how inspirational it was for girls to see a female drummer before they moved her out front.
Superstar and Rainy Days and Mondays are my favorites...however, if you wanna see some more her talent check out The Carpenters medley of Burt Bacharach songs! ❤🎉
OMG, YES! You absolutely MUST fully dive into the Carpenters. Check out "Superstar" next. Then "Rainy Days And Mondays', "Goodbye To Love", "Hurting Each Other", "Yesterday Once More", "Top Of The World", "For All We Know", "Bless The Beasts And The Children" and so many more. Their Christmas album is classic with her voice bringing you right into the holiday spirit.
When she was in school she wanted to join the Marching band. They gave her a horn (not sure whether it was a trumpet or saxophone) but she didn't like it. She then asked to play a drum. This is how she went on to become a drummer. In the early days of the Carpenters she always played the drums. But their manager pushed her to get out in front instead of hiding behind the drum. So in the later performances she is out front singing instead of being behind the drums.
In then Real Time, Karen had that same Effect upon us. As a young Teenager, I had the pleasure and honor, of shaking, and thanking, Karen and Richard, as I was attending their Post Concert within the 'Green Room', of Chicago's then Arie Crown Theater. ( 72' or 73'-ish)
I saw “Rodriguez” (Searching for Sugarman) there in spring of 2013 (I believe) and it was still called Arie Crown then. The one at McCormick Place, right?
This was their first big hit. This is the first time I was in the car on the radio and there was this song and it was 1971! The rest is history. She’s gone way too soon and she is missed.
Bear in mind, while this is a taped performance, they are lip synching to the studio audio recording. That's why all the background vocals are layered w Karen and her brother Richard. He created an the musical compositions and arrangements for the group. Most reactors start their Carpenters' journey with: Rainy Days and Mondays, or Superstar. Other must listen to tracks are: Yesterday Once More, Only Yesterday, For All We Know, It's Gonna Take Some Time, Top Of the World, and Solitaire. ❤
The “genius” you speak of - be it the stacking of their voices… the arrangement with various instruments such as an oboe or French horns carrying the melody - is EXCLUSIVELY the brilliance of Karen’s brother Richard who we see on the keyboards yet who too often? Hr’s overlooked - while simply watching or listening - as to the reasons for their brilliance but that’s only due to Karen’s truly mesmerizing voice performances that are so captivating from her very first note. (Has there EVER been a brother/sister talent quite like theirs for the ages? Absolutely *NONE* that I can name!) Keep these fun reviews coming with “Superstar,” “Rainy Days & Mondays,” “Solitaire,” or “Won’t Last a Day Without You” as your next possible Carpenters’ song review, please!
The legend Hal Blaine played the drums on their records and he toured with The Carpenters which studio musicians rarely do... He was the first drummer to have multiple hang toms and she wanted a set of her own. Hal also encouraged her to get out in front and just sing ! Check out Hal's book, it's a great read !
In the mid 60s (1965 to be more exact I was 22) I was completely taken by jazz. One night I walked into a jazz club here in Los Angeles and found a band I had never heard before. It was the Dick Carpenter Jazz Trio. Its members were Richard Carpenter (19) on keyboard (also the arranger and wrote part of their music) Karen (15) on drums You saw very few female jazz drummers and none that age at the time. She was not good she was a master who could handle the unusual times that jazz was going through at the time (Brubeck's album "Take Five" was a study in unusual timing and the song "Take Five" 5/4 time was introduced to a live audience at the Newport Jazz Festival on July 5, 1959). It hit No. 5 on Billboard's Easy Listening chart in 1961. Wesley Jacobs was the 3rd part of the trio he played bass and tuba. They won the Hollywood Bowl Battle of the Bands in 1966. Then they formed a collage group called Spectrum a sextet with Richard Karen and guitarist John Bettis wrote music with Richard, guitarist Gary Sims, bassist Dan Woodhams, and vocalist Leslie "Toots" Johnston. They played the Whisky-A-GO-GO a number of times. then they were back to Dick Carpenters Jazz Trio only with Bill Sissoyev providing the bass. They won the 'Your All American Show" (their first time on TV) in 1968. She considered herself to be a drummer who sang not a singer who played the drums. The problem was while she was an exceptional drummer. her voice was so far beyond all others that many did not know she played the drums.
Karen was phenomenal and was one of my “crushes” as a teenager! Her first love were the drums and she was a master drummer. She always referred to herself as a drummer who just happened to sing instead of a singer who just happened to play the drums. You should definitely check out a couple of UA-cam vids that showcase her mad skills on multiple drum sets! Mind blowing! And you will never have to worry about picking out a “dud” song by her, because there just ain’t any! Enjoy the ride! Which reminds me, check out Karen’s version of th Beatles “Ticket to Ride”! 😁
I'm always impressed with the lyric "time and time again the chance for love will pass me by, and all I know of love is how to live without it." Quite lengthy (11 seconds) and in one breath!
The studio musicians who recorded with Richard & Karen were famous and known as "The Wrecking Crew", they were greatly sought after by many recording artist.
Best female singer of all time! She could sing the phone book and sound amazing. My all time favorite song of theirs is And When He Smiles. It's not one of their more well known songs. You should definitely check it out
Only Yesterday, A Song For You, Rainy Days and Mondays, Sing, Yesterday Once More and Superstar. Plus Dancing in the Street from 1968 for a drum performance.
Saw her in concert, just wow ! I recommend Rainy Days and Mondays, Superstar and Karen's favorite Carpenter's song, " I need to be in love", there is an awesome l8ve performance of it on you tube.
ALWAYS love listening to [the] Carpenters (they always said not to use the word "the" with their name, but that's hard NOT to do!). Thank you for the great reaction, Steven. 😀
Yes Steve,Karen was a singing angel....such a tragedy life she had, gone so soon...Im a big fan and have all their tracks on vinyl,I'm oldschool....check out their cover of "pls Mr.Postman" best regards🙋🏼♂️
that's a beautiful song and what a voice!! she always reminds me of a female version of that great country and western singer Marty Robbins. you should check out el paso and also the song he released a while after which followed on from el paso. i think it's called feleena.

And btw That's her real voice. No autotune or other 'tricks" back then. You had to SING to prove yourself. Some of today's female 'performers" can't even hold a candle to her majesty.
PLEASE do "Rainy Days and Mondays". It is the best. And she is "on the kit" again, where she was always most comfortable.
also her and her brother did ALL Of the background vocals on their recordings. In this video, their LIVE band was lip synching. When karen and richard performed live in concert, this backup band in this video DID sing along with them the background harmonies...
Wait til you hear her voice when she sings SUPERSTAR... Absolutely beautiful!
Karen had one of those voices that you hear the first note out of her mouth and you know it's her. For me, she had the most perfect female voice of my generation. Her brother, Richard was responsible for the Carpenter sound, and did all the Layering as you called it. We lost her to early. RIP Karen.
Burt Bacharach said hers was the perfect voice for his music. He was not wrong.
Karen Carpenter. Such a beautiful voice. Such a tragic loss. Her struggles were many.
Karen. The epitome of clystal clear vocal perfection.Pure velvet.
You're right Steven. No words to describe her voice. Look up her drum solo. Its on youtube. Gone too early. RIP Karen.
Her voice was “pure.” My high school choir teacher said her voice was phenomenal.
One of the MOST perfect pitch voices EVER!! They called her 1 take Karen...AMAZING!!❤🎉
Saw her in 74!!! Saved my life as a kid from a violent father.
So sorry to hear you had to go through that! 🙏🏻
Sending you lots and lots of Love and Healing, beautiful soul...🥰💜🥰
Rainy Days and Mondays (Official Video).
Yes!!
Yep -- and more Karen on drums!
Her voice is Haunting
I loved the Carpenters. It is a slow dance memory for me.
Great brother & sister duo from the 60's-80's. Karen was one of a kind. There will never be another like her. She had such a pure calming voice. And she was a terrific drummer. - Richard is an amazing arranger (of instruments, AND vocals)
- In fact, he is responsible for the "Carpenters' sound".
Karen was a first-class drummer. It was the thing she loved the most. She was the Carpenters drummer before they convinced her to be the lead singer of the group. You should watch the video of her drumming.
Karen Carpenter had one of the greatest voices ever! Her story is so sad! We lost her way too early!
Try “ I need to be in love” (she’s in yellow) or “Solitaire” to be absolutely blown away.
It’s so nice to see others enjoy Karen’s voice! It was magical! R.I.P. Karen.
This was their first big hit. Her brother Richard wanted her out front so you don't see her playing the drums very often. She loved playing the drums. She viewed herself as a drummer who happened to sing.
The label wanted her out front.
Richard Carpenter was a genius with his arrangements. He often gets overlooked because of Karen's vocal talent.
Her brother is underrated as the writer, arranger & producer of their songs
So, SO true!
He didn't write this one though. I believe their arrangement may be his, but he didn't write it. Burt Bacharach did.

I know there are some great female artists but Karen will always be my favorite.
Women today can never compare to Karen!
This is what the meaning of the word MAGIC actually is!
R.I.P. Karen Carpenter ✌️❤️🙏🙏🙏 she should do a reaction to her drumming marathon she shows her proficiency on drums of many types all in a row from the Carpenter's variety tv show ✌️♥️🙏🙏🙏

Absolutely!! Such an incredible group and her voice is phenomenal! Thanks for swinging by! 😁
i ve been a fan of her since i was 7 ears old. her voice never stops to amaze me
As she said she was a drummer that can sing. For that double She's in the same club as Don Henley and Phil Collins. Another Goody is Sing A Song.
Karen Carpenter had such a beautiful voice. Her drumming skills were awesome. Singing and playing the drums is exceptionally difficult and she did it with ease. Love your reaction!

I think you would really enjoy their song " goodbye to love" ✌️
One of the most beautiful voices, any genre, of all time.
There really is no explaining Karens voice other than it's pure magic!
I had Carpenters on 8 track tapes in my car as a teen.... amazing lady Karen was special.... She always said "I'm a drummer that also sings"....

Steven, I think what you mean about Karen’s voice is it is Angelic; the voice of an Angel. ❤

This was their first big hit. This is the first time I was in the car on the radio and there was this song and it was 1971! The rest is history. She’s gone way too soon and she is missed.
Very voice was so sweet and gentle and smooth. Angelic. ❤
Such a beautiful soul gone to soon so talented thats her brother on the keybords
She considered herself a drummer first and singer second! She plays drums in the video for "Rainy Days and Mondays" too.
Bear in mind, while this is a taped performance, they are lip synching to the studio audio recording. That's why all the background vocals are layered w Karen and her brother Richard. Her voice touched all of our souls.
Yes, yes, it did.
The smoothest, purest most angelic voice of all time and she was a fabulous drummer too!

Her brother, Richard, does all the arrangements. They both multiply their background vocals X12.

If you like her on the lit, check them out at Walter Reed Hospital live, Bacarrach medley. She tears it up.
In a magazine rating she was ranked as a drummer above John Bonham.
Santa
What?! 😳
If you DON'T get goosebumps when she sings, check your pulse. You could be dead. LOL
That was a shortened version of "Close to You." It has a cool ending that will have you singing along.
Karen had the voice of an angel and was a great drummer 🥁 check out her live drum solos, it will surprise you
Try out "This Masquerade." Beautiful vocal and an amazing jazz piano solo by Richard. A great flute solo, too!
Top of the World is my favorite
Love the Carpenters. IMO their best is Goodbye to love, a great song with a brilliant guitar solo
I'm always impressed with the lyric "time and time again the chance for love will pass me by, and all I know of love is how to live without it." Quite lengthy (11 seconds) and in one breath!
It's simple, Karen had a voice of an ANGEL
Karen and her brother, Richard, on keyboard, are The Carpenters. The others are just studio musicians.
They were a lot better than “just “ ❤🎉😊
The studio musicians who recorded with Richard & Karen were famous and known as "The Wrecking Crew", they were greatly sought after by many recording artist.
Carpenters. Not "The".
Has anyone mentioned that the Carpenters were "discovered" by Herb Alpert....a serious trumpet player as in Tijuana Brass😊
Best female singer of all time! She could sing the phone book and sound amazing. My all time favorite song of theirs is And When He Smiles. It's not one of their more well known songs. You should definitely check it out
I refer to Karen's voice as "Hauntingly Beautiful". You should check out her drum solo on UA-cam, Playboy Magazine listed her as #1 Drummer in 1975.
Only Yesterday, A Song For You, Rainy Days and Mondays, Sing, Yesterday Once More and Superstar.
Plus Dancing in the Street from 1968 for a drum performance.
Check out 1968 Dancing in the Street...she rocks the dums
Dig deep into their catalog. Not a clunker anywhere
From what I’ve heard so far they are all bangers! 🔥
Really love her voice. Karen is one my favorite singers of all time. So sad she's gone too soon.
Karen Carpenter has a drum solo that is so much fun! I'd recommend a song to check out but they're ALL killer!!
A Song For You, Goodbye to Love and Superstar. Solitaire...their songs are ALL so good!
I agree. Solitaire is flat out amazing!
AND THE ANGEL SANG
Yes Steve,Karen was a singing angel....such a tragedy life she had, gone so soon...Im a big fan and have all their tracks on vinyl,I'm oldschool....check out their cover of "pls Mr.Postman" best regards🙋🏼♂️
from her uptempo ones i also adore 'Sweet,Sweet Smile"
This is the greatest music.
I think you will like "Goodbye To Love" next.
that's a beautiful song and what a voice!! she always reminds me of a female version of that great country and western singer Marty Robbins. you should check out el paso and also the song he released a while after which followed on from el paso. i think it's called feleena.
