Even if European car companies successfully converted themselves into EV era, many jobs in Europe would be lost anyway as EV needs less complexity (parts). Let alone in the era of EV, Europe finds themselves less and less relevant as EV is not just about battery: it's also about software, sensor, lidar, autonomous capability, which is not Europe's strength.

For anyone who wants to be part of this major transformation needs to come here.

Hi Sam. Just a side info BYD recently made a strong entrance to Ethiopia via none other than TOYOTA’s sole authorized reseller there. Considering China’s close relationship with most countries in the continent, Africa will be a bloodbath for legacy automakers. Tesla is not even in the equation.

I'll think Tesla is okay with losing some African countries to competitors. How many cars are sold in Ethiopia each year? I imagine that a electric car would be a great option for many, now when the solar panels have dropped in price.

Ethiopia gets almost 100% of its electric power from renewable sources. Electricity tariffs are pretty cheap there. Up until now petrol and diesel powered autos were very expensive to own as all of the oil is imported. This shift to EVs will jump start the economy in a way unseen before.

Hope Brazil and China continues their strategic alliiance specially regarding economy. Brazil still has tendency to be sympathetic to western influences. The US and EU has not and will not develop Brazil. Brazil will benefit from Chinese investment in hydro, wind and solar, automotive industry and farming equipment which are far cheaper than western equivalent. This without worrying about political interference. Brazil should go for the jugular and insist on factories, jobs and knowledge transfers, not finish products. They can also ask for processing plants for their mineral exports rather than just ship ores to China for processing.

There are reports on Chinese social media of construction workers strike at the BYD Brazil site, NOT against the construction company nor BYD but against the Brazilian authorities. As it turns out, the construction workers was happy with the "slave-like" AIR-CONDITIONED sleeping quarters and they were trying to finish their job in record time so that they could go home to see their family which has been receiving part of the salary.
It was speculated that this whole saga is due to the construction company refusal to "pay" relevant people AND refuses to replace the Chinese workers with locals that demand 3X pay and shorter working hours.

The Brazil 'slave story' was false. The workers concerned have denied the allegations. The construction workers have posted a video and written denying the allegations. The Brazilian state authorities and judges are notoriously corrupt. By the way no charges have been laid against the contractor by the Brazilian proseutors no doubt because the slavery charges are vehemently denied by the workers themselves.

As an FYI, BYD'S best selling car here in Brazil is the Seagull, locally named as Dolphin Mini (god knows why), then they has both the Song Pro and Song Plus with very good numbers. They scared the "local" legacy automakers that they pushed our government to overtax the chinese cars (BYD brought like 100k cars before additiinal taxes kicked in), but since BYD should have their local factory ready to go by late Q2 or early Q3, this should help boosting their footing to aim for getting into the top 5 brands in sales within a couple of years (our top 5 todays consists of VW, Fiat, GM, Hyundai and Toyota), since wholesale is almost 50% of our numbers (rental car companies, taxis, companies and government working fleets) and they only sell om retail side today, pretty much.

These affected workers are protesting why they are being termed as slaves. Brazilians don't realize many Chinese, like those who come from the subtropical southern part, do not sleep on mattresses. Too warm and humid. Sleeping on a bare wooden bed is a norm for them but a slave like condition for Brazilians. Like if you are in India forvtge first time and don't know much about their culture and you are shocked to see the workers eating with their hands without any cultery. You will think their employer behaves like a slave owner. Something like that.

Whilst the dolphin is so much more in Brazil than in China,do not forget it cost a few $000 to ship cars from China to Brazil.
That said the market or RRP is not necessarily set low if you don't have to.
Profit is important - particularly if as you have said in China BYD are selling at near cost to take market share.
Businesses need to make a fair margin to maintain growth and continue to stay around.
For me the EV is still far too expensive when compared to ICE. That difference in cost is still more than 5 years of fuel cost and some service cost.
I also tend to buy a car and hold for at least 10 years and average around 20,000 kms per year.
My current car is a 2012 diesel having dome 235,000 kms. I service it myself and typically get 9.8-10 km/L a tank of diesel 65 L at around $100 a fill ballpark. If an EV then say a 75kWh battery pack at say $0.90 / kW being $68 a charge using an external charger and maybe only 300 kms v's my 600 kms of range. So thake makes it more expensive than my diesel if I use fast charger networks.
Maybe once solid state batteries and Sodium Ion batteries are used or other more energy dense batteries finally hit the production line then I will look at an EV but not for now.
Charge from home using your solar I hear you say.
I don't generate sufficient excess solar to charge a car from my home Solar system let alone fill a battery during 6 months of the year.
Victoria - Mornington Peninsular region. my 9.4 kW system through an 8 kWh three phase inverter generated 12 mWs of Solar over the full 12 months in both 2023 and 2024 at my place.
It is only in late spring summer (Late November - late Feb - just on 4 months) where I can generate in excess of my household use that would fill a 13 kWh battery (maybe a bit more on very sunny days).
My best days in summer gave 60 kWh per day generation but having air con on meant less than 30 - 40 kWh excess.
That still not enough to charge a car and my car is not at home during the day to charge it.
So any charging from home would be late afternoon early evening at peak charge cost and only off peak small trickle after 10 pm.
Grid charging at peak charge $0.42/kWh cost from home and $0.22 after 10:00 pm.
Off peak charging cheapest would be $16.00 a fill of 75 kWh. or peak charge cost $32.00 for the same 75kWh.
I tend to tow race car trailer long distances quite often and an EV won't cut it for my needs just now.
I will wait to see how things improve. also the electric charge network in Victoria and regional Australia is far from great and so much more expensive. diesel is still far more readily available and if I was using super chargers for charging then cost of Electricity would be very expensive and as haigh at 60-70% of that of the Diesel for each long trip.

I really believe the "West" will have to recapture Brazil, like they did with Argentina, the only way to "compete". Just to have an idea, the price of the EV cars are still expensive... but not to the Brazilian standards, if BYD can reduce their price by 20-30% they can simply dominate all the market in a matter of few years. The chepeast car here is 75k BRL, and the cheapest EV is 99k. A good car for middle-class income is around 110-120k, combustion only. dolphin is still expensive at 150k, but they also sell the mini dolphin (Seagull in China) for 115k. So as I said , if they can reduce this to below 100k is still expensive but compare to current competion it will simply destory the market considering the efficiency and costs here. We also have a potential to grow more PV which makes the cost of ownership (charging) even more affordable.

Meanwhile Americans are driving 10-20 year old cars, because they can't afford new ones or just don't want to pay $80k for a truck that is worth 40k. That also hit the used car sales market, like those 5-10 year old cars are overpriced, due to high demand.
I commute 60 miles a day on a busy highway for many years now in the NY City suburbs and I see more and more broken down vehicles on the side of the road than ever before. I assume people cannot afford new cars and trying to use cars that are 20+ years old or were only affordable because they got mechanical problems.
