Hi Nick, a good review and it looks a seriously good effort from BYD. However, you didn't mention test efficiency & range. Is this because like most manufacturers, the actual figures are nothing like those dreamt up in the lab?

    • @npoleary
      @npoleary  Місяць тому +1

Thank you! Range was shown on screen at 3:00 🤓
I could incorporate my own EV range test but the problem is, I test cars all year round. All of the cars will get worse range in the winter vs if I test them in the summer so that wouldn’t be fair.
It’s WLTP, so that’s a real world example in the best conditions that you can achieve. But weather and other factors will have an impact on what’s quoted so quite often it will be less.

It would seem a software update that would split the big screen to include small sections for audio and climate controls would be an "easy" upgrade for future, if not current models.

Right hand drive has indicators on the right hand side of the steering wheel.
European car makers were given dispensation to have the indicators on the left owing to the small number of vehicles being sold.
Japan, Australia and India all have the indicators on the right as did the UK before its car industry was taken over by the Europeans.
By the way BYD and its different companies has around 20 different brands and is one of the largest manufacturers of EV's and Hybrids in the world.

Fun fact: for those who laugh at BYD standing for Build Your Dreams, let me tell you a story. When BYD was founded in 1995, it’s headquarter was located at YaDi (亚迪)Road, Shenzhen, China, so they named their company YaDi. However, the two words were already taken by other companies, so they added a Bi (比)in front, and that's how BYD (BiYaDi 比亚迪) came about. As a result, Build Your Dreams was just an English motivational slogan they came up with later.

We have had a major OTA update recently in Australia. This allows a vertical three-finger swipe to change temperature and a three-finger horizontal swipe to change the fan speed from any screen. Plus, the voice activation is up there with the best. It can change all the necessary elements of the aircon. This update has dramatically reduced the intrusion of the safety systems as well. So much so one does not need to turn any of it off.

I have a Seal and it’s the best car I’ve ever had (my previous cars included a Mercedes S class a couple of Volvos several Japanese and Australian cars and my wife has a wonderful Citroen C5).
There are a number of things you missed on your video. Firstly, at least in Australia, the car has heated/ ventilated front seats and heated rear seats. The seats are also leather on the top two, of the three models we have here. The climate control can be changed via voice control as well as three finger swiping on the screen.
There is also a heads up display which does an excellent job.
BYD has already sent three updates after consumer feedback since the car was released here in December 23.
I would recommend this car to anyone looking for a sedan. They also have a number of SUVs that are worth looking at.

I watched a video post in a popular youtube channel for BYD: A famous columnist abroad visited BYD last year, at the end of the visit, he asked a question to byd marketing people, "I knew byd have had 20 years of experiences in car manufacturing history, why do you enter international market so late?". The marketing people told him very plitely that she didn't knew the answer, but she would forward the question to byd technical people and they would answer his question.
A week late, the columnist received a email sent from BYD's technical chef, told him that during byd's first 10+ years, they were leaening how to build a car so their design and quality were not good enough to compete. Late byd hired world's 1st class designers, and invested lots of new technologies so their manufacturing capabilities promoted a lot. In 2021 BYD thought they could now compete with all the world brands in both EVs or hybrid.
The columnist late said that he assumed the same factors when he asked the question to byd, but he was very impressed that byd's tech leader gave him the answer so frankly. That's the great attitude of an excellent company.

For current buyers of new cars resale value is a problem, you are right. But what is important (and there is not enough data yet) is how happy the people that buy those cars used and for cheap end up getting. If they are good and cheap, word of mouth will eventually make more people want to buy them used and that will raise the resale value. Not tomorrow, and that is something people buying one now should take into account. And probably a reason why BYD's new cars have to be cheaper.

Also BYD has the best supplier chain in China and most of the key parts are made in house BYD, the results is their price are so competitive.
BYD also has high end of vehicle: Yangwang U8 SUV ($150K) and U9 $240K racing cars, BYD Denza are developed with Mercedes and now BYD buyout all the shares and rights from Mercedes.
Toyota already adopt BYD's hybrid technology in their new cars.
No one will doubt BYD will be the top 3 vehicle manufacturer in the world in 5 years, may be 3 years.
That's why our government want to ban BYD with the slogan of "national security". The reason reason is US cars can not compete with China now and in the future.

I found the comments re the indicators position to be interesting. Having the indicator on the right of the steering wheel is the ‘normal/correct’ position for dedicated RHD designed vehicles made in Japan and Australia (when we still made vehicles). Indicators on the LHS was a quirk of Euro vehicles (e.g. Mercs and BMWs etc) that saved money by not converting the steering wheel setup. I guess it’s becoming the norm as we head down the path of ‘converted’ LHD vehicles taking over the market. Thanks for the interesting and detailed review.

    • @ThatForeignBloke

I was wondering about his comments about the indicator stalks. I live in Thailand most of the year and Sweden the rest. Here in Thailand where vehicles are RHD, the indicators are on the right. I have a Ford Ranger but have driven other cars here all RHD with the same right sided indicators. In Sweden however, it's the opposite LHD and left sided indicator stalks, and I always spend the first few days wiping the windscreen unnecessarily whenever I move between the two countries. I am originally from the UK but haven't lived there in a long time so I am not sure what is the norm there now, but on a recent visit my hire car had right sided indicators. It seems very strange that BYD would say they will put them on the left just for UK RHD vehicles but not other RHD countries such as Thailand or Australia 🤔

Electric cars these days are generally run by a computer .. usually some sort of Linux derivative. That means that the Chinese government knows everything about you, because they can force any Chinese company to give them their data. Tesla cars were banned from military sites in China for example because they understand what can be obtained by using video and location services and perhaps because they know they would do it. Some may consider that a Trojan horse. The US used to worry about the Chinese providing routers .. now they provide not only functional routers but all the video and location services, all in one 🤔 maybe THERE IS something else to know.

Waiting this car for a while in Türkiye. In Türkiye BYD Atto 3 and Seal U on sale, but this model still not in sale (because of additional Chinese custom rates as I know). There will be a BYD manufacturing plant in Türkiye in 2025 and this model will be available with lower custom rates. Similar may also apply to Europe, importing from Turkey bypasses high Chinese custom rates.

If you said this in the 80s, I guess you could get away with that statement. Except he forgot to mention that Japanese automobiles and electronics had been dominating the world for almost 4 decades! You can't even say that about Korean cars and electronics, which in 2009/2010 was already leaps and bounds ahead of the Western world. I think this dates back to the days of manual cars where if you needed to indicate and change gears, you could using both hands. HOWEVER, to save money, most brands don't bother to switch the stalk anymore, so cars from Europe exported to AU/NZ will just have the stalk on the left, which isn't the end of the world given most cars are auto these days, although now gear changes have been replaced with having the needs to interact with the infotainment screen (to control climate for eg) so it would still be helpful.

  • @simonpaine2347

I believe that you can control the climate from the buttons on the steering wheel.
On the right press the top left button and this will change the appearance on the small screen. Then using the scroll buttons on top right scroll to temperature and then use the wheel to adjust.
Or just ask miss BYD, she's very obliging and happy to help!

Although I'm British, I live in Mongolia. I live off-road in the mountains 36km outside Ulaanbaatar (UB). I'm a convert and a fan of EV's in general. I've got 3 (2 Surron dirt bikes and an eMTB). But I'd need a 4WD truck and that puts BYD into the expensive territory for me. Instead I run a Ssangyong diesel 4WD truck. I got it 2nd hand for about £2600. That's hard to beat. I'd love to have a 4WD EV but I don't think I could afford it, even with the considerable savings on electric vs diesel, it would probably never pay off.
    I man can dream though.

Actually, in Australia, the indicator stalk is on the right-hand side because, like in England, we drive on the left side of the road. In Europe and America, it is mounted on the left side. Because they sit on the left side of the car.
Reason.....Try changing gears and indicating at the same time when the indicator is in the middle of the car. So for England, the right side for indicator stalk is actually the correct side. It's only all the European imports with the easy mod of just moving the steering wheel to the right side without adjusting indicator stalk is what makes you think it is correct.....But it is wrong!
Look at any english made car...
Still. With automatic cars, we tend to just live with it. 😢

Missed a few key features.....LFP battery can/should be charged to 100%, unlike most EVs that should only charge to 80%. Hence you get another 20% range. Also, at least in Australia, all BYD cars can use Tesla V3/V4 superchargers.
Missing is Testa's routing software that integrates nearby chargers and battery range with navigation. However, I use ABRP as an app on Apple Carplay. Works perfectly and integrates non Tesla chargers as well.
As noted elsewhere, latest OTA fixes a lot of little issues, and has easy control of temp/fan speed. Voice commands also work well and the 360 degree camera is amazing, better than Tesla.

There have been just six EV battery fires in Australia out of more than 180,000 EVs on the road, according to EV FireSafe.
In its submission to a federal government enquiry on electric and hybrid vehicle battery fire risk, it noted that none of these were spontaneous, related to charging, or caused explosions.
Three incidents where EV batteries caught fire were caused by an external fire (unrelated to the vehicle), one was related to an arson incident, one by a road collision and one by road debris.
Fire and Rescue NSW said in a report issued in March 2024 that just three of the 456 lithium-ion battery fires it attended in 2022-2023 involved electric vehicles.
One involved an MG from which the battery had been removed and not disposed of correctly, one involved a Tesla Model 3 hitting road debris on a highway and one involved a battery from an Audi RS e-Tron that had been removed in a workshop. The report also listed four hybrid battery fire incidents but did not outline the causes.
The three top culprits were instead e-mobility devices like e-bikes and e-scooters (90), battery chargers (46), and energy storage batteries (37).

This is a very nice car both build and drive feels excellent, also get into some luxury, the seat sliding backwards when you open the drivers door, front seat is headed and vented in two levels, back seat heated, steering wheel heated so as RWMs. The HUD is the best even better than BMW and Mercedes in terms of visibility with polarised sunglasses in the bright day light. You can also change suspension with two levels. Sound is very decent not the best. Screen rotation helps to view more maps in front and more camera angles when parking and turning. It is very comfortable to drive if the road is nice and smooth, very few wind and tyre noise. The acceleration is solid and the grip from the wheels excellent even on the wet surface. Just so nice.

Having previously watched your review of the BMW estate with it's completely unrealistic price tag, this was actually refreshing to watch. It does actually still sort of have a dashboard in front of the driver and it's so good to hear of an EV manufacturer not using Lithium ion batteries which are pretty nasty things. The biggest negative for me apart from still being very sceptical of EV's in general is the huge glass roof which I can see cooking the inside in hot weather , even with the heavily tinted glass.

Australian's have indicators on the right hand side (mostly) because of the dominance of Japanese vehicles (Mitsubishi, Toyota, Mazda, Nissan, Subaru) - that's where it came from and local companies (when we had them) followed suit. So dd the Koreans - not sure why. However - all the European cars have always had the indicators on the left (Mercedes, BMW, VW group etc). Japan which is a right hand drive country has always had the indicators on the right. I switch between a Model 3 and Atto 3 quite often and I have to continually adapt. I would prefer consistency.

Similarly all vehicles had to show kmph so that is why we have mph and kmph on UK cars but European registered cars only have kmph. The UK version of the 2006-2011 Honda Civic has a button on the dash to change the digital speedo from mph to kmph however look at a Euro spec car and they do not have that button so can only show kmph so if they drive over here they have to do the mental conversion to mph. Fun fact. Today I saw a breakdown of a couple of chinese electric cars. The sound proofing and filler in the doors and othe hollow parts were filled with degraded tarmac that sent out fumes after about two weeks use. Apparently the fumes are toxic too. As well as the metal usd razor blade thin, and rusty metal was also used. But as the car youre reporting on. The outward appearance was excellent, including finish. As a matter of interest, who opens up the floor of their car or door panels before buying.

What an excellent and informative video. I live in China and do get a little sick of everyone bashing “Made in China” when a lot of products, like this car, are actually world class. We have been happily driving our Honda CRV here for the past eight years but are now actively considering a change. Going around the sale rooms it is very easy to note a huge difference since going to Honda so many years ago. You go there today and there are only three or four tired-looking upgrades of the same cars. The size of the sales area has been decimated as has the sales force which seems depressed and as uninviting as their cars. On the other hand visit BYD or any of the other sale centres and their is a sense of excitement and pride, an eagerness to show their products which is in marked contrast to not just Honda but also Toyota and Ford dealerships. We are pretty much settled on buying a Tank 400 hybrid in the next few weeks. Fantastic car to go with our lifestyle, wonderful sales team who were eager and knowledgeable about an exciting and well-built product at a great price.

Yes I bought this as my first EV and love it and yes its the 500hp version. It's not quite as refined as my previous Kia Stinger 3.3 GT but is a beautiful car. One thing to note is the AC controls are usable with a click of a button from the center console and not just from the screen. You can also use the steering wheel buttons to adjust the climate. My only small gripe is with the height of the driving position but this in all electric cars. I like to sit a low as possible but with the batteries under the car you just cant get the feeling of sitting on the road. Even the Kia being a big car I would sit as low as possible, which is very low. worth every penny, is up there with the teslas if not nicer and is something else compared to a 360bhp petrol in terms of acceleration and torque.
