  • With the Obscure Kart Racers saga completed (for now at least), I felt it was time to move into another genre for our fill of obscure video games.
So why not start with another one of my favourite game genres?

I only just now realized that, at 34:19, I said the voice acting makes "already not-funny jokes, less not-funny", which implies the voice acting makes them funnier. That is not what I meant (I meant that they make the already not-funny jokes even less funny), and I don't know how I didn't notice this error until now. Oops.

Honestly, when I hear CRT's voice, I can't help but picture a poor man's Handsome Jack, and that just kind of makes some of the dialogue entertaining in some wierd sense, for me.

Oh HECK YEAH! it's a short game but *so* strong in atmosphere, thanks to both the art direction (not just character designs, but also the weapons you can craft) and the music.
Also the final boss setting is one of the craziest i've ever seen in a 3D platformer.

Didn't expect to see a re-review of Skylar and Plux. I personally loved the original review a lot, but this revisit's neat. Sad to see that Wallace and Gromit, despite being a spectacular show, got a less than stellar game. I wonder what other obscure 3D platformers Ben will cover in the future. By the way, if you see this Ben, will you ever do another personal recommendation? You kind of stopped doing that after the Ristar video.

Ah, it always comes back to Skylar and Plux with ya, doesn't it?
A lot of UA-camrs and famous Interneteers have THAT thing that's their sworn enemy. For ChuggaaConroy, it's Steve the Red Pikmin; for Proton Jon, it's that time he said "move faster, Pokey"; for AVGN, it's LJN Toys; for Caddicarus, it's Phoenix Games; for Nitro Rad, it's Bubsy 3D; for Bobsheaux, it's Cool Cat and those Italian Titanic movies; for Vinny of Vinesauce, it's Bungie from the Gigglebone Gang; and of course, for our boy Ben, it's Skylar and Plux.

Id recommend Poi. Its a Mario 64 inspired platformer (it has the same moveset as Mario 64) and is a fun 3D platformer. It has a ps2 era feel to it as it very much seems like a smaller game but is really fun with its moveset and platforming. Its usually pretty cheap too as I found a physical copy of it at walmart for $12 on switch.

Can confirm though, the Toree games and Macbat 64 are SUPER cool! There's also Kiwi 64 that you missed but... It's like 5 minutes long, so who really cares.
Skylar and Plux is a game I haven't heard of in YEARS now, should really replay that someday (yeah the story is whatever, but the gameplay is fun)!
A few personal recommendations of my own tho:
    - Whiplash (PS2/Xbox)
    - Super Cloudbuilt (Steam)
    - Dawn (Steam)
    - Rolled Out! (Steam)
    - Paperball (Steam)
    - One More Roll (Steam)
    - Newt One (Steam)
    - Lumin's Path (Steam)
    - Lorcan the Leprochaun (Only has a demo so far) (Steam) (Go support this game on Kickstarter so we can get the full game btw)
    - Eraser (Steam) (Rage game)
    - Crumble (Steam)
    - Blanco (Steam)
    - The recently released Solar Ash, if that counts (haven't really heard that many talk about it) (PS4/PS5/PC)

Here is a game I have played you gotta take a look at if you ever do a Obscure Fighting Games video. War Of The Monsters. A 3d platform fighter made for the PS2 in 2003 by Incognito Entertainment. It is both considered a love letter to fighting games and classic monster movies. It also got re-released on the PS4 as well as a PS2 classic. So that's the version you oughta look at considering one of the skins in the PS2 versions that is locked with a special condition is opened by default.

To be fair to the game, the movie Treasure Planet literally had a stealth scene so when following the story it only makes sense that it was there even if game stealth usually sucks in platformers. Also Montressor has such a good track! Also, also, Treasure Planet, Atlantis the Lost Empire, and Titan A.E. that can be flawed to some people but I love all three of them anyways. Also Iron Giant.
MacBat 64 OMG! I beat it in a day but it was a cute time the whole way through!
How much is the mushroom game? I'd love to play it hopefully soon. Seems hard but I have played Crash a decent but in my day so I don't think I'll suffer too bad. I mean I will suffer, but I'll persevere.

To think Project Zoo would end up meeting the same fate as The Incredibles: Rise of the Underminer video game since now we got Wallace & Gromit: Vengeance Most Fowl coming to Netflix which from the trailer I've seen of it, it's a direct sequel to The Wrong Trousers with the return of Feathers McGraw and it has zero connection to Project Zoo, almost like Aardman is intentionally ignoring the video game like how Pixar ignored all the follow-ups to The Incredibles that weren't made by them before Incredibles 2 came out, which because that film started right where the first film ended, it ended up making those follow-ups years prior completely obsolete.

"I am not made for all this running around..... " (Wallace)
Cue him running around in the next game. Get it. Iz gud. Also PAL version is optimized, so it's safe in case you want the authentic English experience.

Thoughts changed on the Evil Brain, a decade and such later?

Younger me took the Evil Brain way too seriously. It's very obviously supposed to be a tongue-and-cheek moment, which fits with the rest of the game's sense of humour.

I know this game is rather recent, but I would love to see you cover Demon Turf which mixes 2d characters with a 3d environment. Also while this isn't really a 3d platformer, since we're on the topic of obscure platformers I would also recommend you check out Puppeteer if your able to.

Funny enough, I did actually pick up Demon Turf recently. Haven't played much of it yet, but so far I do like the movement options and the visual style.

If you’re a fan of games that serve as time capsules to earlier days in gaming that rewards players for clipping out of bounds, might I recommend Anodyne 2?
(Its not necessary to play the first game)
It’s one half 3d platformer, one half zelda

This isn’t a 3d platformer but sometime I think it would be good to do a part 4 of obscure kart racers. Way more content to look into. There’s this one kart racer for ps1 that’s a shameless copy of Mario kart 64. I think it’s like extreme go kart racing or something? I think if you do a part 4 to the kart racing games you could focus on ps1 era kart racers.

I honestly liked Project Zoo. Not sure if it’s because I’m a fan of Wallace and Gromit or because the game itself was one of the first GameCube games I’ve played.

I'm hoping part 2 covers the American McGee's Alice games (Alice, and Alice: Madness Returns). Sure Alice 1's gameplay is rough around the edges, but the environments and atmosphere make up for it to a sizable extent. And Madness Returns irons out the gameplay significantly, though at the cost of some of the atmosphere. Overall, they're great games with their own shortcomings that are overall worth a try.

Anyone here know how good your pc needs to be to play that Psylosybil (I hope I'm writing that correctly) game? I'm currently on a platformer kick myself since I need a break from rpg's. And honestly, that game looks so freaking Fire, I wanna try it if I can. Problem is that my laptop is kinda old, so I dunno if I can run it.
All that being said though, this video was awesome. Definitely hope for a part 2 somewhere in the future, though I'm a patient man, I can wait (heck, I have watched the obscure kart racer trilogy five times or so now XD)

    • @BenjaMage
      @BenjaMage  2 роки тому +1

According to the Steam page, PsiloSybil's only listed as requiring a 64-bit processor and operating system, so it's probably not too demanding of a game.
If all else fails, there is a demo on the Steam page, so you can give that a go and see how well the game runs on your computer before you consider buying it.
And I don't know how soon it'll be, but I likely will do a part 2 for this topic.
