3D Platformer Month kicks off with a look back at previous games I've featured in my Upcoming 3D Platformers series to see where they are today. And I hope you're excited for this year's edition of the series, it's going to be a good one!
I'd just heard about the Untitled Otter game yesterday. Great stylization of early 3d graphics but I did think it was just a practice level for someone just starting out. Didn't know it was going to be a game at one point.
I am actually grateful you included the otter game and Path to Greatness. Even if they don’t come to fruition, they are still very interesting concepts and serve as great inspiration, as well as reasons to keep an eye on these small devs.
Indeed, there is a lot that can be learned from projects that never materialized for both casual observers and developers. The otter game in particular really did look great, too.
Great idea for a video. Always nice to see what's going on with these games. One suggestion? Maybe include links to the finished games on Steam or something. Hardly essential or anything, but it would be nice!
I am glad you arer covering 3D Platformers one of my facevorite genres where most channels are just covering 2D Platformers or Metriodvanias . Keep up the great work . Look forward to seeing more videos on it
Bomb rush cyberfunk was so good. Not sure how the only mention here was about was about mixed reviews. It has like 98% recommendation on steam, and most reviews are placing it above an 8/10 - definitely deserved more praise here imo. Also i really enjoyed clive n wrench but i know im in the minority. I think its one of those cases where the core game is good, but it was held back by its flaws of which there were a bit too many and made it too rough around the edges for most people. You missed corn kidz 64 AND pseudoregalia which were both amazing games from 2023. The platforming in pseudoregalia is masterclass
Glad to hear I'm not the only one who enjoyed Clive N Wrench. I thought it was a lot of fun and it actually had a lot of elements that elevated it above some other 3D platformers: levels that are easy to navigate, collectable detector, and a focus on raw platforming and exploration over mini-games. I think the gameplay is what really matters here and Clive N Wrench was a lot of fun overall for me. Sure it doesn't have the personality of Banjo-Kazooie, but the gameplay is still really enjoyable.
@@cartoongamermatt9077 ya I found the gameplay pretty addicting actually. Didn't pick up any other game until I nearly 100% it. None of that extra crap that most other 3d platformers are bloated with - just pure platforming, exploring, and collecting with pretty damn good movement
Honestly, I haven't played Bomb Rush for myself yet, so I didn't want to pass judgment on it myself. Perhaps in hindsight I was a bit too harsh on the game, as I've read a couple of reviews that were more lukewarm (and even negative) compared to the general audience reaction.
Bomb Rush Cyberfunk was pretty middling, frankly. An OST with only one or two good songs, level design that left something to be desired, the ever annoying trait that many indie games have where they hype up how much more of the game there is only an hour or two before the end, characters that feel generic from their designs to their personalities. It was okay, but not something I'd ever give a glowing recommendation.
Same here. I really enjoyed it. Sure the personality wasn't there since there was barely any dialogue and it wasn't really funny or charming, but the gameplay more than made up for it. I easily enjoyed it more than Yooka-Laylee, which I still liked. The level design in Clive N Wrench was just much better imo. The levels were easy to navigate, they were memorable, there was a good amount of levels, the platforming was a lot of fun, and the controls were very solid. Sure the game looks jank and low-budget, but I think the gameplay is what really matters.
I was glad you included the ones that were probably not going to turn into full games. They inspired me. That otter game was really cool. Aw I liked Zera. But that's just the way life can be. Video games take a long time to make you never know when things get in the way. OO i forgot about Nytro. I hope that gets finished. Looked cool. KAO is meh to me for some reason. It hits all the check boxes of what a platformer is. But I keep putting it down. For some reason I just can't get into it enough to complete it. I am interested in Cavern of Dreams too. It doesn't look like a game I would enjoy but every review I have seen people love it so I don't know. Masquerade: The Baubles of Doom didn't look good either gameplay wise. And it wasn't but it was funny so you never know what you'll like about a game. A lot of the 3D platformers I play I found either through you or rad or a few others. So I am glad y'all give light to the games I would never hear about other wise. Yeah some like Clive and Wrench were disappointing but others like Pumpkin Jack and Hell Pie were a blast. I surprisingly really loved Hell Pie. Stupid funny. Platforming was a blast with the swinging. Just a great example of a great 3D platformer in my opinion. I have been seeing all these youtube videos about the genre dying lately. O please, yall negative nellies. Not only are there so many indie games no one ever hears about. There are other games that are non traditional platformers. Like first person platformers like the Supraland series. And if you want to get real technical even games like Spiderman are platformers. Anyways its nice to see a recap. Some of these I forgot about and others I haven't heard in a while and was curious what happened.
Pseudoregalia and Cavern of Dreams have been my more favorite recent 3D platformers. For Cavern, it’s very Banjo-Kazooie like where you have power ups and interconnected worlds, but it is pretty short. It also has a lot of secrets to it that I always enjoy for the end game. My main complaint with it is that I wish it were longer.
@@foolsanticsstudio Orbo’s odyssey is pretty short as well, but it is a lot of fun to just run around in. It really is the best sonic game I’ve played recently, lmao.
I'm glad to hear that, because a certain arts and crafts inspired game is going to show up in my Upcoming 3D Platformers list at the end of this month... I usually find most of what I'm looking for on Twitter. Just searching 3D Platformer for weeks and months on end. Sometimes I'll check Itch.io or just search '3D Platformer' on Steam or Google and see what turns up. Honestly, most of the time I find them from other people talking about them rather than the developers themselves.
@@TripleEye_Josh Well I'll make sure to keep my eyes open for that video then :D That's a good idea to find new games, I should mention 3D platformers more often in my tweets in general!

In any case, hope these channels may prove of use in showcasing and finding new cool 3D platformers amongst all those others.
I tend to sometimes watch these low-sub count low view-count vids in my recommended and be like "cool but also meh needs work, let me give some feedback" but this video was pretty solid overall and well-made. It wasn't overbearing or AI-made or poorly balanced or anything, just a good review of 3d platformers covered over the past 5 years. Nice job.
Tomb raider 1-3 remastered deserves a mention imo because the original games are mostly platformers. Also I'm still hoping lobodestroyo gets released lol. They update occasionally.

Personally I loved Clive N Wrench!! Movement was really fun, lots of collectables and even the parts that were a bit Janky were not bad cause dying in that game has very little impact.
Both the Path to Greatness and the Otter-Lifeguard game actually looked charming, and the Otter one in particular looks better than following Longtail one art-wise.
Isn't there is a double standard within the indie scene where 3d Platformer look down upon but 2d Platformer always considered the definitive way of platforming.
Hell Pie mechanically is really fun, but it's attempts at humor are so lame and unfunny and just cringe that it really takes away from the overall experience.
A lot of the new era of 3d platformers turned out to be god awful like Yooka Laylee or mediocre like Hat in Time. Penny’s Big Breakaway is the only modern indie 3d platformer I can think of that can compare to the greats of the genre. Mario Odyssey obviously shows how much life the genre can still have but competing with Nintendo when it comes to 3d platformers has always been a near impossible task.

I hope Pseudoregalia and Rollin' Rascal could appear to get some more attention soon
Pseudoregalia is already gaining some traction, for Rollin' Rascal? i dunno, but we'll have to see

I'm sad that Otter game is no longer being developed on. However it's great Spooky Poo is still in development. 😢
