    So a few people have noted about the Blue Gem and Nitro staircase secrets in Crash 2 and how there's additional clues to them both (the Nitros in the staircase don't bounce like usual Nitros, and the end crate tally in Level 1 once you have the crate gem will read /0 instead of the regular crate number).
    Admittedly, I didn't know about the /0 hint, and I did overlook the lack of bounce to the Nitros, so I'll take the L on those. That said, I still stand by what I said about the Nitro staircase; I don't think it's a particularly good secret, personally.

      While Crash 2 isn't my favourite in the series, i do think what you said about some secrets is a bit harsh. The bit where there's a room full of Nitros is honestly genius. Why would there be a whole bunch of Nitros when there's seemingly nothing behind them? Let alone being in a room you can avoid altogether.
      Want to know something? The old Tomb Raider games are filled to the brim with this design, especially a particular puzzle that's a subtle history lesson on pre-1971 train ticket sales.

      @@ultrairrelevantnobody1862 I actually like these secrets in Crash 2 because back then it rewards player curiosity. Young players want to try stuff in games and in Crash 2, doing so gives a hidden route to a gem or an entirely new level. And this is why I like the colour gem collecting in Crash 4 since it follows Crash 2's method. But in Crash 4, each level that has a colour gem, has either a carving or graffiti on wall that tells how to get the gem. This is really good way to reward player for observational skills.

      Honestly, the only one I think is too much is the pit the big bear falls into. There's an audio cue and screen shake to hint that he hit something but I think more was needed. Everything else I believe has enough clues to be reasonable. This is in stark contrast with the pterodactyl. While I found it when I was young, it was by freak accident. As far as I know, there's nothing to indicate that he's special.
      Interesting to hear all these different thoughts about Crash secrets. I never really thought about them before and as a kid was amazed and proud of myself for finding the majority of them in both 2 and 3.

    • @ultrairrelevantnobody1862
      @ultrairrelevantnobody1862 4 роки тому +8

      Spyro 3 I massively prefer over 2. The latter has a surprising amount of questionable and dated design choices regarding level design, progression structure, and the ratio of main game to side-games. The less said about the side-games that most of the time are less interesting than even the easiest minigames in some of the Rugrats games, the better.

    17:50 I gotta disagree with you on that one. That secret is genius. Every nitro crate in the game bubbles and bounces periodically. These ones are silent and stay perfectly still, so a player wondering why there is a random stair case of nitros in the middle of nowhere with a perfectly safe path next to them may be able to put two and two together.

    Hum, well, I personally disagree on Crash 1.
    Now, I don't mean about the game aging poorly, it has, but rather on the notion that the game is bad on the sole basis that it aged poorly (people use this kind of argument for Zelda 1, Mario 64, Ocarina of Time, etc) and I don't agree with the idea that a game turns automatically bad because newer games did better what the original established.
    In example, while you say that Crash 1 shouldn't be played because it's hard/unfair, I disagree, I personally like (or has accustomed to) it's level design and I like the challenge the game provide to me that not many platformers do. Which leads me to another thing I noticed on the whole video: putting a game as good or bad based on taste rather than actual quality.
    Had Crash 1 been a bad game, it wouldn't have sold well enough to deserve a sequel.
    Again, not that Crash 1 has bad design choices (like the save system and getting the gem in 1 run) but that doesn't make the whole game bad, just old. In example, the first Super Mario has a lot of design choices that many today would classify as bad (I've met them) but that doesn't mean Super Mario is bad or poorly designed, just that it's old but still a good game.
    Overall, nice video, but more subjective than you may think.

    I would say that in my opinion, Crash 2 is the weakest game in the series. I just didn't find the level themes all too memorable, the coloured gems are almost impossible to figure out how to get without a guide, and it has one of the harshest difficulty spikes I've ever seen in a video game, I hate everything to do with Warp Room 4 especially those bees, it's still a good game but not one I come back too often. I've always preferred Crash 1 but that's probably because it was the first game I've ever played, the game is challenging but the difficulty spike is gradual and not rapid like in Crash 2, sure the gem system is annoying but it's almost satisfying to conquer the tough challenges the game throws at you. Crash 3 has to be my favourite though, it's definitely the easiest but still has it's fair share of challenges, while I didn't like some of the vehicle segments *(BIKE SEGMENT)* I feel it had the best overall design, fair challenge, pretty good boss fights, best music, fantastic theming and it has Dingodile!

It has some bullshit that I don't like which can really piss off the player on the first go, but it's overall a lot more genuine than what was cooked up in Tomb Raider 2. I didn't have to use save crystals all that much aside from the Antartica levels, but I still die way too frequently in TR2 thanks to awful enemy placement, rubbish AI, and far too much emphasis on clunky and unintuitive combat. A simple lesson in game design, do not overstep the engine limitations.

Secrets arent supposed to be obvious or found immediately, so theyre hinted at or are random with slight hints, like with the big polar bear, thats the only platform that isnt completely destroyed. Also, experimenting is how people find out how to do things, so doing things like falling down a pit to find a secret isnt all that surprising, as you will wind up doing so at some point

    Okay so I wasn't the only kid who initially skipped Crash 2 and went straight to Warped. Good to know.
    I didn't even bother finishing the first game back on PS1. Mostly because of the save system. The original Crash Bandicoot save system was absolute torture because I was basically able to get most of the gems up until _Slippery Climb._ That was, for all intents and purposes, a literal brick wall. When I finally beat the level *_AND_* got the gem on the N. Sane Trilogy version, I almost threw myself a party for finally beating it. I felt like The Plain Doll after you kill Lady Maria in Bloodborne, a huge weight fell off my shoulders. And I'm pretty sure eight, nine, _and_ ten year old me breathed a huge sigh of relief.
    I don't think I 100% Crash 2 until I reached adulthood. I stopped playing video games for like five or six years, and I might've only beat the game because I looked up the secrets online. I had fun memories with Crash 2 growing up. It had a lot of my favorite songs, particularly the _Diggin' It/Bee-Having_ theme. I'm a sucker for a good baseline, and it was always fun and bouncy.
    I never found the Hot Coco warp on the original PS1 version of Warped. For the longest time, I thought it was a scrapped level that the developers forgot to remove from the End Credits. Which also means I never got that last gem. But I was able to get mostly gold and platinum relics while I was still a kid. The Great Wall of China levels were my favorite relics to get because of how fast Pura was.
    Crash Bandicoot was such a big part of my childhood. The fact that he's made such an illustrious comeback in the last few years has been incredible to watch. I can't wait to see what the future has in store for him, especially with how great _It's About Time_ looks. I pray to God it gets a Switch release, I'm too old to try go for N. Sanely Perfect relics, but I still don't want to miss out on getting to experience a new Crash adventure.

    I'm surprised nobody ever points out the terrible quality of recorded lines in Warped. They shoulda checked the mic settings properly for that. All the recorded lines sound like they have either being recorded too close to the mic or volume settings were set too high. It's really distracting and that loud distorted voice quality is one reason why Warped's Game Over screen is the creepiest one in the trilogy. For those who played these games back in 90's, that is.

      Goes to show even early 3D games with the best production value aren't perfect. Other decent examples for 1998 being Tomb Raider 3, Metal Gear Solid, Banjo Kazooie, and debatably Rugrats Search for Reptar.

    The secrets in Crash 2 are clever because…
    Blue Gem has after you get box gem the tally says “?/0” boxes
    Green Gem in sewer is clever because, why would there be a path with nitro crates that lead to nothing to it if you cant even touch the crates?
    Why is this the only bridge in the game that doesn’t completely break?
    Why would there be a staircase of Nitro Crates and that don’t bounce when you can’t jump on them?

    BenjaMage, you've also forgot to mention about the Wumpa Fruit Chain missing in the N Sane Trilogy, if you don't know what that is, a Wumpa Fruit Chain is when you spin at a crate during Dark levels or Chase segments, the Wumpa Fruit/Extra Lives will automatically go to you instead of lying on the ground.

    I think the nitro saircase in crash 2 is a real bad way to hide that secret. I kind of hoped that in Nsane they would make the boxes not glow like normal nitros or something to make it a bit more obvious.
    but the fake wall.... that has the be the worst BY FAR in my opinion!
    Well made video and interesting to hear a perspective on preferring crash 3 over 2, that's not something you hear that often. both are fantastic games of course :)

    • @ZebNyan96
      @ZebNyan96 2 роки тому

      IMO those two secrets were one of the most obvious ones in Crash 2. There would be no reason for the sewer room or the nitro staircase to exist if there wasn't something hidden. Why would you be able to completely ignore those hazards if there was nothing beyond them?

    • @vlogergames

      @@ZebNyan96 thats a fair way to look at it too for sure. I think for the staircase that makes sense. Im just really non a fan of non sloid walls as a secret in amy game, if a dev pulls that card on you, suddenly you have to distrust any wall in the game. Now, crash 2 does this is a pretty good way, still having the player go through a wall like that is a big no no in my opinion.

      @@vlogergames That's a good point too! Suddenly you don't know what wall you can trust anymore :D. I think this is present in many levels of Crash 4 since some of the boxes are crazy well hidden.

    • @vlogergames
      @vlogergames 2 роки тому +1

      @@ZebNyan96 crash 4 is really bad for this, it constantly makes you check behind every corner and off screen for boxes. it's a matter of taste I suppose, some people love having to comb through levels like that. if anything I think crash 2 strikes a great balance between those things, it pulls some moves I'm not a fan off in it's level design but at least lets you know something weird is going on! If nothing else it's at least memorable, a year after commenting this, i instantly knew what you were talking about so I gotta hand it to them, it's well done even if i disagree on the methods :p

    I hate how the N-Sane Trilogy turned the cement into clay, like they just removed the textures of it.
    Pd: The levels that are accessed with the pterodactyl and the alien sign were selected to be deleted as one of the members of Naughty Dog stated they didn't have time to finish them, so the guys working on these levels had to hide them so that no one would delete them before publishing the game.
