Thank you so much for watching it! Yeah I just think a lot of people focus too much on the fact that the franchises that were at the top of the genre 15 years ago aren't making games anymore, overlooking the 100's of new characters that have been introduced since!
Working on part 2 as we speak!

Great video! When it comes to the genres resurgence my opinion might be a tad controversial but I really don't think a lot of new 3D Platformers are as good as the classics, even considering those of which I have little connection to. An example being Banjo Kazooie, despite only playing it recently I personally think it clears every game shown in this video. The most exceptional examples I can think of when it comes to new 3D platformers, like Pseudoregalia and Cavern of Dreams aren't even that long, well actually maybe Crash 4 has a bit of length to it but that's not that focused on exploration.
I'm hoping devs keep at it though, because despite my personal dissatisfaction I don't think any of these games are bad, just not able to scratch this itch that I've been having for a while, though there is one that I think will be able to.
That brings me to some 3D platformers that I want to mention, games that aren't out yet but that I'm very excited for.
The first I'm more interested in because it's based on Eldritch Horror, it's another Metroidvania Platformer called 'Plead with the Elder Gods'. Most games in this genre go for lighter themes but some don't, like Blue Fire, and this doesn't either. There's also a small playable version on Itch called 'Plead with the Mountain God'.
Second one's an interesting one, it's called 'Electrokinetic', it's made by the person who made Pseudoregalia and it's a 3D Platformer Roguelike. I don't think I can think of any other game that combines these two genres, but considering how much I loved the movement in Pseudoregalia and that my biggest issue was it's length I'm very interested in seeing how this game turns out.
Last is the one I was alluding to earlier, it's called 'The Big Catch'. Initially when I'd backed it I thought it looked pretty cool but I thought the level design didn't feel crafted around the movement and moreso that they were just designed as spaces you can just jump around in which is the reason I find games like A Hat in Time, Hell Pie and Mario Odyssey to not feel that fun to play through. It doesn't feel satisfying to break a level that feels like it wasn't properly designed around a characters toolkit.
But then when 'The Big Catch: Tacklebox' came out I got to start playing and by the end my worries were thoroughly dealt with.
Now, you might wonder why I backed a game I wasn't 100% sure about, and I'll be honest I just really liked the world/presentation and those are also things I look for in a game so despite not being sure if the game would hold me over I was sure the rest would. Said world/presentation also got way better and now I'm looking down the barrel of what might end up being my new favourite game.
I haven't been talking too much on what the game is actually like, so I'll try to summarise it now: the Tacklebox is an Open World 3D Platformer (like Bowser's Fury) That plays kind of like a mixture between Pseudoregalia and the 3D Prince of Persia games, it's presentation is also kind of similar to both of these but not exactly. I'm not sure how much of this will bleed into the main game, but I don't really care since all I was worried about was the movement and the level design. I'd highly recommend trying out The Big Catch: Tacklebox, it's a free prologue for the full game, though I do want to warn you that it takes a while to get into the groove.
Those are the games I wanted to mention, there are others I'm excited for but like 3's enough.
I want to say that I do really love this genre it's just I've played so many that are great but just missing something, even the old games I feel are better than the new ones are almost there but not quite, even my personal favorites. My personal favourite for example, Jak and Daxter, is too short imo, and the Spyro trilogy has pieces of that that golden game hidden throughout the trilogy, with some other annoying stuff piled on top like the side characters and Orb mini-games.
Eh maybe I should stop chasing such a high standard, it'd be easier to ignore if we weren't already so close.

i really wanted to love that game, and i adore the entire presentation! sadly the gameplay itself never clicked with me.
it's probably the exact old school kind of difficulty others love, but that lack of momentum oddly technical move set felt stiff and dated, and never fun to use to use for me.

Kid Vermin: "Yeah I really don't want to spoil the lore and story of Tinykin you should really experience it for yourself.
Also Kid Vermin: Goes on to mention the "much more somber ending section" that he never expected thereby spoiling elements of the surprise that he purportedly enjoyed.
I get the video doesn't give explicit spoilers and I'm not really trying to be too critical but just some feedback that if you make the point about wanting people to experience the story and lore for themselves then almost immediately saying anything, even vague details, about the ending sequence of the game feels counterintuitive to that. The game still looks great and I will probably still enjoy it but it just would have been nice to discover what the ending is like myself rather than now going in knowing that somber tone shift is coming.
Still a great video and I've got a couple new games for my wishlist from it but just something I wanted to point out.

    • @KidVermin
      @KidVermin  Місяць тому

I will absolutely take that on board in future! I think it’s trying to balance that fine line of talking about enough elements of the game and its story to warrant the video in the first place, but leaving enough for the viewer to discover on their own! Ultimately I would love more people to go and enjoy games that I have so I wouldn’t want to say or do anything that may tip them towards not checking it out for themselves (unless it’s a terrible game of course) Maybe I can try leaving anything that could be considered as spoilers until the end of the section with a time stamp to skip?
The only thing I would say is, I don’t think the line about a more sombre ending section will do anything to lessen the experience for you and if it looks interesting to you, I would really encourage you to still play it for yourself!
Thank you for the honest feedback too, I appreciate it 😊

@@KidVermin Once again, your effort shows *very* strongly. So many good edits, your analyses on the games in question seem well-rounded in the sense that they describe what we need to know about the mechanics plus your own personal pros/cons/observations. And the script is simply comfortably told.
The bit at Tinykin especially seemed to have resonated strongly with you, regarding its story. I hope that thanks to Nitro Rad and stuff it had gotten good sales and reception. Demon Turf most certainly has, from what I understand of the indie 3D platformer scene.
And I believe Corn Kidz 64 was well-received too.
I'm familiar with most games here. Hell Pie had my interest for a bit, but the rancid and provocative humor was too much for me.
Late last year had the release of another very colorful (and frankly beautifully 2D hand-drawn animated) game, specifically a metroidvania, by name of Cookie Cutter. It likewise could get quite out-there and juvenile at times (such as the secret penis-headed Chozo Statue) but not quite to that extent. There was something about it that made me jive with it a lot more.
Recommend looking it up. It's a solid game and there's more planned.
That said, Ven VR Adventure is completely new to me. I probably wouldn't have looked into it if it weren't for your video (VR doesn't tend to have my interest.
At the moment i've got my eyes set on Ruffy & the Riverside where 3D platformers are concerned, and want to replay Clash: Artifacts of Chaos and Soulstice. With some strong eyes set on Genokids, Immortal: And the Death that Follows and My Familiar.
Thank you again very much for the videos and effort that goes into them. They're very nice to watch.
Take care of yourself, and wish you good luck and fun on whatever may require your attention, both for YT and outside of it.

@@jurtheorc8117 Thank you so much for the amazing comment, i really appreciate all the kind words and your input on everything!
Im glad to hear you like the approach to how i talk about each game, it's something i've really wanted to focus on because i never really wanted to review games, i've alwasy just enjoyed talking about them and saying what i did and didn't like about them, i guess in a way that is a review but im nt somebody with this massive insight on all the different little mechanics and nuances that go into making a game. My 2 biggest influences when i started were Caddicarus, his humour is very different to mine but i've always enjoyed the videos being a bunch of games around one topic, and then Nitro Rad who is more chilled in his approach and spends a little more time talking about the development and mechanics of different games, so i've been trying to get a good mix of both whilst style maintaining my own style.
Yeah i think Hell pie definitely wanted to see how far they could push things, i think as someone who grew up watching jackass and south park, i'm maybe a little more used to things being gross for the sake of it, but i can completely understand how i could be less enjoyable for people, would be interesting to see if they do another 3D platformer in future as the movement mechanics are great, maybe just with a bit of a different setting?
Oh yeah Ruffy looks great! i'm really looking forward to The plucky squire, i think that mixes elements of 2d and 3d platformers, looks like it has the potential to be a lot of fun!
i'll have to have a look at a few of the ones you've mentioned though, i've had my eye on Genokids as it reminds me of Hi-Fi Rush, just with faster movement!
You don't have to thank me! i appreciate your time and for giving such a small channel a chance!
Wishing you all the best and hopefully will see you on the next video!

@@KidVermin Thank you very much in turn for the big reply. I'm glad that it's of encouragement for you.
Fair on wanting to give your thoughts rather than outright review them. That's simply a nice way of going about it. Can see the Nitro Rad inspirations especially strongly.
You don't quite have the absurd skits like Caddy does in his videos, like, say, a friend of yours lightly tipping you over, followed by a cut to you falling up the stairs, a mannequin in your clothes being flung into a trash bin from out the window of the second floor, a sped-up montage of yourself with a fake beard running around your house pushing said trash bin around while some goofy Banjo-Kazooie or Kevin Macleod music is playing, to end with a shot of your girlfriend/boyfriend/partner in a balaclava and a shirt saying "Live farts - cum young" loading up a sniper Nerf gun with bits of carrot, walking to the window, saying "you're toast", and then an edited sound of a gunshot and a cartoon scream before a paper cut out of your cartoon self gets inserted into a toast iron.
That's the kind of stuff one could expect from a Caddy episode, right?
(My apologies if stuff went too far)
Either way, you still go in a fair bit of depth for what you do notice. And if someone disagrees but *does* happen to be more knowledgable about a specific game, it can be interesting to hear the stuff that they did notice (preferably in a polite way).
On such a note: Whenever you get to Kya: Dark Lineage, i hope that you won't brush off the combat in a similar way that James (Nitro Rad) did when he reviewed the game over five years ago. I think i said this in your obscure/forgotten 3D platformers video but to reiterate: there's stuff like enemies coming in different types and subtypes, which learn what moves you use the most and learn at different speeds.
They'll block accordingly based on this learning speed, so it's best to know your moves and switch them up often. Or find other ways : Break blocks with Grabs, quickly move to their sides, behind them or over them, or even use the enemies themselves to harm one another.
Since a year or so, someone's made a video on what *can* be possible in its combat system.
      ua-cam.com/video/lUiUgy51NS4/v-deo.html
(I know James gave a mid-to-positive score to it at the end but i'm still a bit miffed about how much he undersold the combat. And for some reason he didn't mention the two ridable animals either.)
Kya's got its troubles, rough parts and potential for more, but I hope you'll enjoy it whenever you may get to it.
Fair too regarding Hell Pie, and a more tame but still challenging 3D platformer could be interesting. Would be a switch-up for the studio, since i read they also made Ben & Ed.
Was never a big fan of South Park myself, so differences in taste do apply.
Heard about The Plucky Squire too! I keep thinking it's out already, but i'm probably confusing it with stuff like Wandersong.
Makes sense regarding Genokids and Hi-Fi Rush, though it doesn't play into the rhythm element of HFR. Rather, the big mechanic is being able to quickly swap characters. I've seen some tricks like charging up a Special with Red for example, then switching to Blue, and Red will still stay on the field until his fighting animation has finished.
Can recommend No Straight Roads too! Kind of beat-em-up/hack-and-slash like both of those games, but much shorter, less complex and more boss-centric.
Yet it leans *all* in on music, as both a gameplay mechanic and as an overarching theme. Bosses have different attacks that happen in accordance with different parts of their boss theme. The theme itself is a "neutral" version based on the Boss' choice of genre, but depending on if you or the boss is doing well, the theme shifts more to either EDM or Rock
      I love it a lot.
Hope you like the games i mentioned when you may look into them. I've also played Blud, Tiny Terry's Turbo Trip and Harold Halibut, and finished Zet Zillions yesterday, a roguelike deckbuilder with a colorful sci-fi setting that makes me think of Cookie Cutter, though with a different style.
I enjoyed it a lot, but Clash: Artifacts of Chaos, Soulstice and Cookie Cutter have been definite favourites. There's more coming for Cookie Cutter and I try my best to spread word of cool games where possible.
Fun thing to know, Clash: AoC is a prequel to the Zeno Clash games by ACE Team, who also made such games as the Rock of Ages series and The Eternal Cylinder.
Too late, already thanked you. I've done it before and i'll do it again!
Kidding aside, likewise man! Have a good one.
