- The Department of Social Sciences of SZABIST University organized an International Conference on the “Impact of #globalization on Social Science, Research and Education.” Professor Dr. Pervez Hoodbhoy @PervezHoodbhoyOfficial was one of the three guest speakers. The conference ended with a vote of thanks from Prof. Dr. Altaf Mukati, Vice President of #szabist who shared his thoughts on the theme.
Pervez Amirali Hoodbhoy, born 11 July 1950, is a Pakistani nuclear physicist and activist who serves as a professor at the Forman Christian College and previously taught physics at the Quaid-e-Azam University. Dr. Hoodbhoy is also a prominent activist in particular concerned with the promotion of freedom of speech, secularism, scientific temper, and education in Pakistan. Hoodbhoy is generally considered one of the most vocal, progressive, and liberal members of the Pakistani intelligentsia.
Born and raised in Karachi in a Gujarati household, Hoodbhoy studied at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology for nine years, where he received degrees in electrical engineering, mathematics, and solid-state physics, eventually leading to a Ph.D. in nuclear physics. In 1981, Hoodbhoy went on to conduct post-doctoral research at the University of Washington before leaving to serve as a visiting professor at Carnegie Mellon University in 1985. While still a professor at the Quaid-e-Azam University, Hoodbhoy worked as a guest scientist at the International Centre for Theoretical Physics from 1986 to 1994. He remained with the Quaid-e-Azam University until 2010, during which he held visiting professorships at MIT, the University of Maryland, and Stanford Linear Collider.
In 2011, Hoodbhoy joined LUMS while also working as a researcher at Princeton University. His contract with LUMS was terminated in 2013 which resulted in a controversy. Hoodbhoy has won several awards including the Abdus Salam Prize for Mathematics (1984); the Kalinga Prize for the Popularization of Science (2003); and the Joseph A. Burton Forum Award (2010) from the American Physical Society. In 2011, he was included in the list of 100 most influential global thinkers by Foreign Policy. In 2013, he was made a member of the UN Secretary General's Advisory Board on Disarmament.
He is the author of Islam and Science: Religious Orthodoxy and the Battle for Rationality. He is the head of Mashal Books in Lahore, which claims to make "a major translation effort to produce books in Urdu that promote modern thought, human rights, and emancipation of women". Hoodbhoy has written for Project Syndicate, DAWN, The New York Times, and The Express Tribune. This channel is meant for Muslims of Pakistan. But most of the viewers are Hindus from India. The purpose of channel is lost. The fact is Pakistan was carved out of India on the basis of Hindu hate and Islam. Obviously education is of least priority .
Dr. Hoodboy would be teaching in some of the top universities and IITs of India had he migrated to India. He would have had research grants and lot more scientific publications for sure. But nevertheless he should be appreciated for his valients efforts in fighting against the establishment to spread the word of science and math in Pakistani society. He definitely would have awakened a few souls in Pakistan. Nobody can blame him that he did not try. For that life time of sacrifice he deserves deep appreciation.
Very interesting topic raised by Sir. When he feared that Pakistani society may develop into just like Afghanistan society, my heart sank for a few seconds. On hearing this, I, being an Indian, felt bad, I can well understand how our like minded brothers and sisters of Pakistanis must have felt.
I sincerely pray that Pakistan gets good governance real soon and walks on the path of prosperity. After all, our roots are the same, we have the same ancestors, even though, conservative lot of Pakistanis think it otherwise.

I can see that the whole crowd is stunned at the revelations that pervez saab kept making about the Pakistani society's mindset. One of the most enlightening speeches that any intelligent Pakistani has made on pakistan soil.

I am making some sens of two nation theory a bit. When East India Company withdrew funding to education then Hindus chose to go with English but not Muslims. That created a gap of knowledge. Mr. Jinnah gave a religious colour to such difference and created two nation theory. To my mind it was a fight between "haves" and "have nots".
It is same story of Israelis and Palestinians, Muslims Vs Jews. We know why Jews are so prosperous, it is knowledge. I guess Pakistan needs to learn from practicality in world and not keep blaming rest of the world

My friend had a neighbour an old person, People used to call him Lahore Ramaswamy
Later I came to know he was called thus because till 1947 He was a professor in Lahore university.
With intellectuals like Hoodbhoy in Pakisthan it is an enigma for us why Pakisthan is reeling under problems.
Pakistan has 40,000 madrasa despite this youth literacy is 74%as against India 94%(youth litracy).
Compare this with India 1100 Universities ( highest in the world)
5 lakh Engineering grade passing out every year(highest in the world)
15 lakh schools ( highest in the world) with 27 crore youth in schools
38 Lakh ITI skilled diploma holders passing every year.
We see failure of Pakistan's Education System is more to do with a radicalized Society than anything else. Once that is resolved other positive results will follow suit. Best wishes for bright future of Pakistan.

The literate Pakistanis like this professor keep lamenting about Pakistan going down … I find it intriguing because I think Pakistan is an exceptional success story. Pakistan today stands exactly where it set out to be.
It is a 100% success story as it was created by British/US design to contain any Soviet expansion towards India through Afghanistan & to do that they bribed the Muslim elite and promised them wealth and money which they would not have got in a unites India. And that’s exactly what’s happened. The 20 elite families of Pakistan have continued to suck money from inside Pakistan(they have sold all the mineral wealth of Balochistan and Gilgit/Baltistan ) and have stashed to the money outside Pakistan and UK, Dubai, Canada, US etc…
What has happened to Pakistan was expected and well predicted by Maulana Abul Kalam Azad even before 1947 as it was their for all to see.
Pakistan was and still is just an instrument to harm India … Pakistan has no other reason for existence.

I agree with the comments that even erudite and wise professors like Hoodboy avoid mentioning anything connected with the universities in ancient India or the scientific achievements of ancient India. That's simply because that means accepting the Hindu civilization as developed and open and forward looking. The closest he comes to recognisjng that fact is when he mentions that Hindus accepted the so called reforms in education by Macaulay.and progressed in the world whereas all Islamists refused to educate themselves and their followers,. They said Islam doesn't need any interference from modern thinking.
Now Macaulay introduced that with no great intent. His effort was self confessedly that his so called reforms woukd make us zombies, blinded by his philosophy and rendered inferior by thinking we r low and insignificant. The fact is we (as in largely Hindus) used that weapon aimed at our civilization and learnt to use it for our growth and kind of turned it against them.

The problem with this thinking pattern is that these two things have ZERO similarity and should not have compared in the first place but out emotional attitudes always drive us and we think that Science , English and Mathematics are all evils . We need to change our thinking patterns and we need to excel in English, Mathematics and Science as otherwise Pakistan will become just like some very poor country of Africa . Quran is still a very important book and Islam is one of the best religion but we need to separate science from religion and separate law and state from religion.
