In Brazil, we read The Posthumous Memoirs of Bras Cubas in high school and people don’t appreciate it enough. “To the worm who first gnawed on the cold flesh of my corpse, I dedicate with fond remembrance these Posthumous Memoirs” ❤️

I had it in my freshman year... Didn't actually read it.
Then by my senior year tried again and absolutely loved it!
I wasn't mature enough as a reader to appreciate Machado, guess it happens with a lot of students, but not always the second try...

I can’t wait for you to read Noli Me Tangere! I have studied the history of my country for long now, and I can say that the allegories given by Dr. Jose Rizal were hard to debunk, but I’m sure with your level of intelligence you’d understand them. Touch-Me-Not has a special place in my heart. And according to Dr. Jose Rizal, written on one of his diaries, that Noli Me Tangere was romantic novel, a work of the heart, a book of feeling. And meanwhile the second book, El Filibusterismo, is a political novel, a work of the head, a book of thought.
I hope you enjoy Noli Me Tangere! You also got me into reading The Phantom of the Opera and could not thank you much for it. It’s one of the best classics I’ve read.

Elif Shafak’s “10 mins and 38 seconds in this strange world”, is my most favorite book of all time. And it’s also the book I have recommended the most.
And till this day, no single person who has read it following my advice hasn’t fallen in love with it and this amazing author. It’s that kind of story who will forever follow you and, despite of seeming to be tragic (which it is), you end up closing the book with a smile on your face because of how (strangely) beautiful it is!!

It was ages ago, but I remember watching The Diving Bell and the Butterfly at The Bookshelf in Guelph and found it both devastating and uplifting. If the book is half as good as it you're surely in for a emotionally good read.
p.s. I highly recommend visiting The Bookshelf if you ever venture that way. I spent a good portion of my undergrad perusing the shelves and watching films in the cinema.

Ooh, Satantango! He has a way of drawing you in with these connected vignettes. Really evocative stuff. If you like it the movie is great. So faithful that it's several hours long 😆
Another big Hungarian book is The Door by Magda Szabo.

If you are interested to read Ukrainian books , I would suggest :
    - The Grey Bees by Andrey Kurkov
    - The Forest Song by Lesya Ukrainka, which is just beautiful and lyrical
    - Cassandra by Lesya Ukrainka
    - Shadows of forgotten ancestors by Mykhaylo Kotsiubynsky
And thank you for that lovely video 💕. There are so many great books all over the world . I don’t even know where to start tbh😅😂

you recommend to start for which one?

    • @lis.1175
      @lis.1175 2 роки тому

@@gabrielagardeano2456 It depends what you particularly like and look for in a novel. If you want to read about Ukrainian Folklore , I would suggest The Forest Song ,it has more like a mythical and magical feel to it . If you search for a calm nevertheless fascinating novel about village communities ,bureaucrats ,distrust and religion and peoples affiliation , I would suggest Grey Bees . If you want to read an Ukrainian poetry book , I would read Voroshilovgrad by Serhiy Zhadan ,there he talks about the industrial landscapes of East Ukraine . My favourite Ukrainian book is The Unsimple by Taras Prokhasko it is a poetic magical realism book ,which I don’t want to tell to much ,because I think that’s the best way to experience it not knowing anything about it . I hope that you aren’t now overwhelmed even more 😅😊

i would also recommend ”museum of abandoned secretes” by Oksana Zabuzhko and ”perversion” by Yuri Andrukhovych! it's really hard for foreigners (even for natives, sometimes) to comprehend what we call Ukrainian Classics, because, obviously, you must know a bit of a history of Ukraine to catch on things, and our history is somewhat painful. but modern novels do not require any additional knowledge, on the contrary, they provide you with this! so, you can just pick up any modern ukrainian book you're interested in :)

Love the idea to explore books from the wonderful authors from all over the world! I will send you one of the books from Indian author. I am still trying to figure out your genre as I am a new subscriber.
On a related note, I tumbled upon a bookstore in Budapest Downtown, and bought a book from the bookstore based in Hungary- Under the Frog. I am reading it right now and cannot believe I did not start this ritual for all the countries before. Visiting a local bookstore will always be on my international travel itinerary. :)

From Algeria (again haha) I recommend you so much "what the day owes the night" by Yasmina Khadra according to your taste I'm pretty sure you are going to love it. It's a historical novel that includes romance, politics and it pictures the life of Algerians and French people during the French colonization in Algeria. It was written in French by an Algerian author in a very beautiful and lyrical way, it's really gonna be worth it. I hope an audiobook version will be available very soon.

I highly recommend a modern Russian classic called Zuleikha by Guzel Yakhina :) it focuses on the 1930s repressions and shows how much the Tatar people had to go through during this period
Also, Laurus by Eugene Vodolazkin is pretty good although it focuses a lot on the religion and religious exploration

I mentioned Zuleikha too in previous Emmie's video as I was still reading it BUT I got to a moment when SPOILER Ignatov forces Zuleikha to kiss him and I started liking the book much less :\
