Emma is the most soothing person ever. Her voice is just so warm and comforting, love you NEED to start a podcast or record an audio book. It's gonna blow up for sure.
"Why do I wanna read mediocre books" Exactly. Life is too short for mediocre books. Also I appreciate you always get to the point when you don't like certain books, feel like many booktubers are somehow too coy to do this.
I had no idea that there was a book of Pan's Labyrinth, but the movie is incredible. The way that its politics interact with the archaic, animistic mythology of the labyrinth plot is just absolutely brilliant. Anything that deals in both Spanish anarchism and paganistic nature spirituality is an immediate yes from me.
Finally someone who feels the same as I do about Before the Coffee Gets Cold! The one thing I remember about this book is the extremely annoying repetitions. It wasn't only the rules, it was also random words, like "clock" being repeted 3 or 4 times in a 2 lines sentence. Or "the woman in the white dress" that appeared who knows how many times. It actually made me angry. (I later compared it with the French translation and there were fewer repetitions in that one.)
About "Before the coffee gets cold", the book is actually based on a play! Which can explain why the descriptions are not as good/the rules are repeated a lot/... The writing is also very typically japanese (very similar to Kawakami, or Yu Miri), which is definitely not for everyone, and takes a while to get used to. I think the biggest problem those books have (as someone who loved all of them) is that sometimes the translation feels a little clunky and not quite smooth, but mostly because of the very different conventions between English/Western/Eurocentric literature and Japanese literature!
Can we just talk about how super aesthetic Emma's room is? Like the wall with the pics, the gorgeous plants and omg THAT KEYBOARD!!! It just pleases my eyes 😫🙌
The Iliac Crest sounds fascinating, definitely want to read this! Also I bawled like a baby to Before the Coffee gets Cold but agree that the writing was nothing fancy at all haha! I guess that’s why I enjoyed it cause i took it up after some heavy heavy reading and just needed something light and plain to cleanse my palette. That or I just cry easily! 😂
Haha I bawled to this book also. Like I was watching One Liter of Tears. Idk, after experiencing the deaths of loved ones in one year, on the year I was to turn 18 (and that's supposed to be a big thing), coming into peace that I won't be celebrating it with my grandparents guess it opened the dam.. also I can't express myself really well.. so I guess that's an outlet also 😂
I’m listening to you talk about the Iliac Crest and I’m wondering how the translator treated the “gender in language” theme since, as a Spanish speaker, I know this is sooo relevant and truee, but knowing that English doesn’t have like “gender-assigned” articles such as “la” and “el”, I’m not sure how she could’ve portrayed it. I’ll be reading to find out though:)
Your impassioned review of Iliac Crest definitely made me put it on my cart 🦴 Anyway, nice new style of outfit you have on this video! It's like semi-emo Emma 🖤
I quite enjoyed Before the Coffee gets Cold but knowing that it was originally written as a play I think helped me accept it for what it was and not be disappointed.
Hi Emma, I wanted to say a big thank you because for October I am going to read Phantom of the Opera finally and your passionate rambles as you call it have been the factors that made me pick it up. I have been waiting for October since the last year to read it as I was on a book ban but I am so excited to read it, all thanks to you and your channel♥🥀
Another amazing wrap up! My favorite read of the month was Shuggie Bain by Douglas Stewart, which imo deserves every ounce of praise its received. This novel is an intimate look into the Bain family in working class Glasgow in the 1980s with the fundamental struggles of class, patriarchy, homophobia, and addiction running through its heart. It is a story of love (tested) and family and loss and coming of age through the Thatcher years. This book will certainly stay with me for a long time and I would recommend to those who appreciate a story of tested love!
omg i loveeeed before the coffee gets cold. it's easy, and cozy, and i love the magical realism and the way the author made sort of mundane things really beautiful. also, I'm excited to check out the liliac crest!
Pan’s Labyrinth is on Netflix for the US right now! I might be for Canada as well or you can use a VPN 😊 The story does take more of a look at the state of the country after the Spanish civil war more than the fantastical elements. However, I personally feel the movie pulled it off perfectly by intertwining the two plots just enough to keep your interest. I am 100% biased as I adore Guillermo Del Toro but definitely check it out!
The best Phantom of the Opera retelling is *Maskerade* by Sir Terry Pratchett. :) It both parodies and homages Phantom and general muder mysteries, and has funny moments and jokes interspersed with genuinely deep and moving emotion. I finished two good classics recently, *Jane Eyre* and *Frankenstein. Frankenstein* especially was such a treat- the language was lovely, and there was so much more nuance to both Victor and the Monster than you usually get in adaptations.
I obviously LOVE hearing you talk about books that you love, but I really enjoyed hearing you tear the last book apart. Would love to hear more about books you read and hated!
I actually really enjoyed the writing in before the coffee gets cold! it’s super interesting bc the author is originally a play write and i actually think the story was originally written for the stage.. and you see it reflected in his writing. Anyway love to see your videos, as usual you have the most calming voice ever 😭 perfect cute to a stressful day
“I expect you to know how to spell words” “I feel like (she) has never met a human in her life” you tore that author to shreds 🔥🤣 but seriously though, that made me laugh 😂😂💀
when you were talking about Infinite Country by Patricia Engel… I really felt it in my soul as someone who left their native country (Venezuela, literally right next to Colombia lol) to go to the US, and that is just trying to survive and adjust… I might have to read the book now lol, love your videos!
Well, The Illiac Crest is going on my Christmas List now lol My favourite book I read this month was without a doubt a 100 Years of Solitude, thanks for recommending it!
I think that most of Pixar movies are about that commercial sadness you're talking about. It came to the point that when I watched the last toy story movie and coco I was really annoyed.
Hi Emma! Oh! I'm dying to read The Iliac Crest after seeing your enthusiasm! Great you like Maurice. There's a movie adaptation from the 80's, it's very good. I love Pan's labyrinth, the movie, i didn't read the book. Thanks for the great vlog!
I love the wide palette of books you read! So different in genre, quality, popularity.. It's so easy to find something interesting tbr watching your vids. Most booktubers stick to a few genres and some of the bestsellers, which makes it repetitive after a while. So it's so refreshing watching your content
you convinced me to read the iliac crest, but i wanted to read it in the original spanish and it was surpirisingly difficult to find, i think it is even out of print which is interesting given the conversation about "erasing" Amparo Davila's books. Anyway i finally got a 2nd hand edition now and i'm so exited.
Pan's Labyrinth has been a fave movie of mine since I was young :D I read the book this year and it was enjoyable for me but I think it had to do with loving the story already and I could see it play out in my mind I read Beowulf for the first time this year and loved it! I have an e-copy of Infinite Country and it sounds amazing
the iliac crest sounds so interesting and right up my alley!! would be a perfect book for the season, not sure if illbe able to get to it, but at the very least it's on my tbr. i so appreciate finding out about books that aren't just the next ya/ fantasy series and already discussed everywhere (saying that as an avid ya fantasy reader) i really liked the coffee gets cold but ig you have to be in the right mindset for it. fully agree with the writing, it's nothing grand, but i found it a cozy read
Thank you for recommending The Iliac Crest by Cristina Rivera Garza. It is a challenge for the reviewer to move beyond superlatives. Yes please please please do a full video on the illiac crest!! I loved it so much but im also super confused by it which I feel was part of the point. I swear after finishing it I wandered around the house just mildly dazed for a few hrs
Okay, so I watched 2 mins of this video, got the Iliac Crest as an ebook and I'm now writing this having read 70% of the book. All this happened in 1 hour. 🤓🤓
I have started reading Thus were their faces and i can already say that that some of the concepts of the short stories seem to have inspired plot-twists in lot of famous movies (Black Swan, Fight club are some that pops into my mind...). “Before the coffee gets cold”: You’ve captured my thoughts exactly!!!! Such a disappointment. On Netflix Japan there’s a movie ( called Cafe Funiculi Funicula) based on this book and its sequel. They got rid of the problematic points and changed slightly some of the stories and surprisingly it’s much better than the book.
I'm excited that you mentioned the frostblood saga! So fun! I also loved it, for the most part. Anxious to see how you feel about the resolution of it all :)
You will be then also surprised when you see the movie, I haven't read Pan's Labyrinth but the movie, far from being a fairytale movie, is dark and twisted. The Labyrinth is just supposed to be an escapism that the little girl creates because her life is so horrible. I really like, will check the book out.
I love the passion with which you express your love or hate of a particular book. As soon as I was done watching this video I ordered a copy of Infinite Country. I can't wait to read it! I am originally from Colombia and have resided in the USA for 18 years. I hope the book captures the experiences of immigrants. Thank you for the recommendations ☺ I also bought the illiac crest
I know this is a slightly older video but I just finished The Iliac Crest and am so confused! It would be awesome to hear your more in depth thoughts about it if you’re still considering making a video on the book!
I just discovered your channel because I was looking through a very not so usual way of giving reviews haha and found YOU! And here I am falling inlove with your pureness and adorably great way of giving comments about books. Thank youu!!! 💖💖 Sending love from Philippines
I was also disappointed with Before the Coffee Gets Cold. I saw it was based on a play after reading it and that made a lot of sense, I definitely think it would work much better as a play than as a book!
Pan's Labyrinth is one of my favourite movies, if not my absolute favourite, and i read the novelization after watching the movie and it really worked for me! The movie does feel a lot more whimsical tho, but at it's heart it remains an anti war movie. It's also part of Del Torro's trilogy of films about the Spanish civil war, so I do believe that the fantastical elements are more so a framing device.
I am currently reading Bitter Greens by Kate Forsyth and I am loving it! I am doing a fairy tale unit with my high school students, so I was inspired to read interesting retellings. I’ve read many of your recommendations in this genre. Love your channel!
@21:16 In relation to Pan’s Labyrinth, Guillermo del Toro is a horror Film Maker first and foremost. I’ve seen it a few times and I think it is a well directed film. I think maybe it hasn’t translated as well to book form, because of its original cinematic creation. I would recommend watching it yourself to appreciate the full cinematography and visual appeal of the real life world mixed with dark fantasy Guillermo del Toro is trying to create in Pom’s Labyrinth 😊
I can't believe you mentioned Komi Can't Communicate. I've been reading it on my own for the last couple of days off and on. Episode 1 is out already. Kind of disappointing because it's only like 10:00 minutes long but it's really really beautifully animated.
If you like Komi Can't Communicate, you would probably like to read and watch the movie adaptation of A Silent Voice. It's about a girl who is deaf and bullied in school because of it and her bully coming to terms with his horrible behavior years later and trying to make amends.
A beautiful video as usual 💜 i was so busy with school so i just read "Sophie's world" and i ADORED IT. I also read "the hate u give" and it was so good too
You have to watch the movie!!!! Pan's labyrinth was my fav movie when I was like 5? 6? and to this day (i'm 18) I still love it and it amazes me how somehow I always forget if the pan is bad or good so i really enjoy the thrill of not knowing what is going to happen. The movie is in spanish but ofc u can watch it with subtitles... give it a try!
My favorite September read was Alias Grace by Margaret Atwood. I’m also trying to read more classics and am half way into A Tale of Two Cities which I’m really enjoying so far.
So - I l o v e how diverse your reading is! So much inspiration! And being a very diverse reader myself, trash is of course a part of my collections 😉 I gravitate towards regency romance trashness and some of my favs are: Tessa Dare (I dare you to try her 😁), Julie Anne Long and Sarah MacLean. And they Can write - and flesh out some naked flesh….. if you take my meaning 😅. The latest “serious literary” book that blew my mind was The Memory Police. Prose like that doesn’t come by on a regular basis! Kind regards from Hanne from Denmark
Emma is the most soothing person ever. Her voice is just so warm and comforting, love you NEED to start a podcast or record an audio book. It's gonna blow up for sure.

Thank you for recommending The Iliac Crest by Cristina Rivera Garza. It is a challenge for the reviewer to move beyond superlatives.
The most haunting review I can remember appeared in a biography of Malcolm Lowry.
An American reviewer said he had read *Under the Volcano* for the second time, and could not escape the pull of the book's tidal current.
*I am this book's fool,* he said, and the tragic fate of the Consul in Mexico remained in his mind like the evening star.
The last sentence of your foreword to *The Phantom of the Opera* (about the cellar) caused a tidal shift in my mind like the Lowry review.

PLEASE WATCH PANS LABYRINTH! such an amazing movie!
