This is such a great idea! I've always been intimidated by the idea of reading a book from each country but it'd be so much simpler to start reading based on continents, and then maybe build it up from there. So thank you for this! 💛

Stopping by with recommendations from my small little home country, Hungary 😊 my most favourite "compulsary" reading in high school just recently got it's english translation: it's called Abigél (Abigail) by Magda Szabó; it sets during WW2, where 14-15 yo big city girl Gina gets sent to a countryside girls-only-school to be protected from the war. The book focuses on her coming of age, with the glimpse of the outside world.
Another great book that set after this time period and is called Those Who Left Behind (at least I'm pretty sure this is the translated title, but please check, the original is called Akik Maradtak) by Zsuzsa F. Várkonyi. The story is about how a 16 year old girl and a middle aged doctor try to fit back into everyday life after being the only ones in their family/among friends who survived the Holocaust

I read my first Zafón last year, got all four books of his serie for christmas and read right now the third one. 🥰 His writing style is so captivating and I'm glad I picked him up. My "reason" is by the way the same as yours: I started my literally journey around the world last year and since then I search for good books from other countries. So I love this kind of videos with new recommendations 🌍📚😍 ... 🇩🇪

Normally I am not one to comment on video's, but I feel like I have to. The idea of reading a book from every country, is something that I find truly amazing. While searching your blogpost for ideas on what I can read, I noticed something. As a citizen from The Netherlands, who loves reading, I would truly recommend you to read "The Diary of A Young Girl". This books simply is the diary of Anne Frank, she was a Jewish teenager who lived in Amsterdam during World War II. She documented everything about living during war time. And this book simply left me speechless, reading her diary fragments was an experiences I think everyone should have.

This is such a huge part of why I love and deeply respect your channel. I am so deeply grateful for the genuine effort you put into and honest excitement you have, for reading diverse book. They are diverse in their format, original language, culturally, the authors and the characters. Including indigenous people. It means so much to see your happiness and this amazing content from someone with your platform and the little I know of your cultural background. This is what I want to see everywhere, and channels like yours (and not just because of this), infuse hope and that positive energy and excitement you seem to have into some of my worse days. Thank you for everything.
P.S.: if you're looking for something aside from the usual but an absolute classic in Argentina, look into El Eternauta. It's absolutely amazing, in all it's many layers.
I'm absolutely reading most of these books, too. Especially "Love After the End".
Oh and thank you so much for the care when saying the names in all the different languages, too ♡ 🇦🇷 (my actual flag: 🏳️‍🌈)

@@PlantBasedBride I'm so glad! If that's your goal, you're already doing amazing ♡
I hope it's okay, I wanted to add a very different recommendation as an alternative. It's one of the most beautifully written books I've read. I'm not sure if it's been translated to English yet, sorry. It seems likely, it's well known. The first book in the trilogy is called The Days of the Deer, I believe (translated literally from Los Días del Venado), by Liliana Bodoc. It's the story of a family from what we now know as Patagonia (my home ♡) and she calls Los Confines. It's set in a sort of reimagined world, but it's a retelling of the arrival of the Spanish colonizers to America (the continent, singular. I've learned in North America they say "Americas"), from the view point of the native peoples. Mainly from the viewpoints of different people from this family. The immersion into their culture and society pre-colonization is beautiful, and it's a deeply emotional read. The trilogy spans many years of their lives, and you live through it all with them, grow up with them. It's truly heart-wrenching at times.
I hope it's okay I replied again, I thought of it and realised you'd probably love it.
Take care, and much love from Neuquén. Love has a far reach 🖤

I read "Things fall apart" ten or twenty years ago, I still sort of remember it, discussed it with a woman married to a Nigerian at the time ...
All the others are "new" to me.
Right now I am into books about Russia ... :( Intended to look into Chinese books more.
But I was reminded of a book "Mot 90 grader Syd" by a Norwegian scientist, Monica Kristensen(?have to check that one, correct) about her Antarctic expedition, that I liked very much ...

I loved this video and have now printed off a list of the world's countries to see how diverse my books are! If you haven't read these already, I have a few recommendations!
USA- The Hate U Give by Angie Thomas
Ireland-All the Bad Apples by Moira Fowley Doyle- talks about the history of women in Ireland and focuses on LGBT and the Magdalene houses.
Kenya/Somalia- When Stars are Scattered by Omar Mohamed- a middle grade graphic novel showing life in a Kenyan refugee camp for two Somalian brothers.
Korea- The Hen Who Dreamed She Could Fly by Su-Min Hwang. A lovely story about motherhood and freedom.
    I hope these help!

I find super interesting what you felt about Marjane's caracter. I read it when I was 16 alone in a foreign country for the first time, it was also one of the first times that I read a memoir by a woman of color. At the time I remember I resonated so so deeply with character, flaws and all. I guess being a teen sort of helps with that.

I never realized how little my adult children remember or know about our personal histories until I ask if they remember. ¡Hola! I’m late to the game but… from Spain I recomend The map of time, by Felix J. Palma (steampunk, Victorian London and H. G. Wells). Also everything under the sky, by Matilde Asensi (historical mistery adventures set in China) and Captain Alatriste, by Arturo Pérez Reverte (Historical adventures set in Spain). And, if you can find it, Little red ridding hood in Manhattan, by Carmen Martin Gaite (fantastic sweet retelling).

I love your videos and reading recommendations. I teach Things Fall Apart. It is an amazing book! I picked up the Ruis book, and I am excited to read it. Thank you also for sharing the book list. I love the list, and it is really special that so many of your readers from around the world shared favorites from their culture. Even though I am not from Jamaica, you may want to add A Brief History of Seven Killings by Marlon James. It is a book centering around the assassination attempt of Bob Marley in 1976. It spans quite a bit of Jamaican history. It is great novel! Thanks again!

I have a few recommendations for Slovenia! :)
    Here's the list:
    - any books by Ivan Cankar (they are Slovene classics and we read them in school almost every year)
    - Southern scum go home!
by Goran Vojnović (it discusses some important topics about people that moved to Slovenia from southern countries)
    - Poems by France Prešeren (he is our greatest poet)
    - any poetry book by Tomaž Šalamun or Srečko Kosovel (they are one of my favourite poets)
    - Alamut by Vladimir Bartol
