Seim Old DickHead I’d rather have the mk3 much better shape and the vr6 high lines are going for a fair bit of money now. Better still I prefer my Mk1 Gti.
I have a 306 and adore it - but to most friends and family, I‘d recommend the Golf as well. Few people can appreciate the incredible chassis of the 306 and then the Golf is from another planet when it comes to all the fit and finish details. For me? I’ll keep my 306 forever.
As a gti6 owner yes the 306's RFS engine is very reliable, but the golf's 20VT engine is also super good. They won't die easily and can hold a nice amount of horses on stock engine components.
So many mk4 Golf GTIs still on the road now. Never see any Pug 306 or Fiat Bravo GTIs or non GTIs for that matter...slower isn't always the worst choice. Besides a remap can see late mk4 Golf turbos get 210hp with no other mods.
You are literally putting a 306 GTI, a car with rally pedigree and born to be a Rally missile, against two cars that are just "lets go shopping" cars xD
I'll admit that I don't necessarily like the way its back is cut when you look at it from the side. But I really like the way it looks from behind. And the rear lights have a nice configuration too. The round red lights with indicators in them are really nice. Other manufacturers have tried that since then but they either don't look good or you can't really see the indicator's orange light when it's on. There's no such problem in bravo because the brake lights are separate...
If they can get performance and economy from a diesel, it's worth having. Nobody can beat a small sized, German diesel engine especially in a Golf, Passat or even Audi A3/A4.
No they're not, I've owned 3, Audi A4 1.9TDIs and I can say that the engines are absolutely bulletproof. I bought my first one for £350, with 150k on the clock, and it run with only 1 fault, until the clock reached 234k. (the fault was a snapped timing belt) Then I bought another one, with 140k on the clock, no faults up until 200k, it had no faults at all. Then, my current 2002 A4, has had no faults and I've done around 22,000 miles in it. Try tell me 1.9 tdi engines aren't reliable.
I didn't own a Mk4 GTi but I did have the 170bhp V5. That was a terrific engine, but the rest of the car was a let down. Especially in terms of reliability and handling.
@@Ale_Badu - listen to what? I can’t hear the engines in the video but regardless, in sound department 5 cylinders wins hands down. I’m not interested in raw performance, I grew up and I’m not into boy racing anymore. 20 hp difference is not a deal breaker for me, I have other priorities now.

Pretty lazy journalism that persists to this day.
