Actually, YOUR video at NAB made me switch. No joke. I had just ordered a Sony FX30 when I stumbled on your video. I was so disappointed with the FX30 ibis I immediately returned the camera and am going to order the LUMIX. Perfect camera for my needs. Keep the videos coming!
I also lowkey love that you can update your camera via the Lumix app on the Cameras wifi network. Less arduous... when it works. lol
Yep did add that in to this video but definitely very convenient
Guys the real hero is the fan they put into the camera. Who ever came with that idea should get a raise. I filmed in full sun 28 degree for 2h in 4k and the camera was cold like a fridge. Lifetime of a sony camera would be 10min.
The biggest difference I love with this new mode is it reduces rolling shutter artifacts. If they made a mode that just addressed that in camera that would be wonderful.
For anyone curious you can use the Sigma 30mm 1.4 Art on the camera without triggering S35 mode. The lens actually covers C4k without a vignette in full frame as well.
Hand's down best firmware update video out there! Great job mate!
@@DustinArmstrongPro FACTS! I am working on a Gimbal VS Lumix soon 🤫
I put the focus limiter for talking head if i know my mic will be visible in the foreground
Man, I watch and learn so much of your content its Crazy! thank you!!
Very helpful. Purchased the camera with 2 lens deal plus the 24-105 with IS. Are you testing the stabilization with or without an IS lens?
In this example up until 70mm it was just in body but after it was with OIS. You'd get an extra stop with OIS. Probably will definitely help but won't see a huge difference
I have the Viltrox EF-L Pro lens mount and I found it did a good job with the auto-focus on the Canon EF-S 24mm lens too. thanks for the video!
Correction for 12:03 Super 35 is actually APSC, what you were referring to was Full Frame/35mm equivalent. 35mm FF (8 perf, 36mm x 24mm) and Super 35 (4 perf, 24mm x 18.9mm) are not the same thing.
Great video thank you! Quick question about the Sigma ring adaptor + EF lens : have you tried it for photography? One year ago when I first tried it, it was too slow to focus, making it impossible to use for event/sport photography. Thank you!
I haven't for photography, although I'm not sure it'll do great for sport photography. Maybe? But I have doubts
Does the new high level e stab allow for shooting braw at the same time.
How do I use s35 lenses on the full frame mount? Is there a certain adapter?
Just needs the same mount. There's L Mount lenses that are S35 (SIRUI night walkers) or use a PL-L mount adapter
Bro, great content. Can you please tell me which AUTOFOCUS setting did you use at 9:49 to have the Autofocus working as expected without putting hands in focus?
@@DustinArmstrongPro Your talking head at 9:49. Thank you for the response!
Great honest Video as always Dustin, much appreciated from London UK
The new stab in crop is a little bit special and I can see some use cases where I'd use it with long lenses as you have, but...
A lot of people already do alright on a onewheel or a rickshaw type setup (where the operator is on a wheeled (but not a full dolly) platform of some kind).
to my mind it's mostly useful for documentary and wildlife type situations, where one either wants a lower footprint or there simply isn't pavement to operate on.
for the most part, I think most folks gather up their b-roll as static handheld shots, or with simple low pans or jibs...which everybody else's IBIS, from Sony to Fuji to Canon to Olypus, do just fine with. There's a specific shooting style where one REALLLY wants to move with the subject in b-Roll, and *maybe* it could bring an exceptional new kind of style to content if the kids out there come up with a whole new genre of videography to take advantage of it.
But I don't see anyone switching systems for this as yet. That would happen *after* the looks of that new style have been achieved, if and when there's a bandwagon folks want to pile onto. someone has to get lightning into the bottle before anyone will be thirsty, tho.
I normally film quickly and not professionally at art fairs and use the 20-60 with mostly focal length 28 with gimbal. Now I have also filmed without a gimbal with the new e-stabilisation. I will now sell the gimbal... And the crop is not a problem because I filmed with focal length 20. Same look as before.
Hey Dustin, with all the firmware update, do you think the S5IIX is the new S1H ii, or do you think they will renew the S1H line?
@@DustinArmstrongPro I'm really hoping for this year, especially with the A7Siv coming out. really want to see if they can make a true video monster with Sony level epic AF for it.
Would a sigma 18-35 1.8 work with the new trick discovered (S35 + High E-stabilization) ?
Funny enough this Firmware is why i just bought the camera. Nice to have a Lumix as a B camera. (I haven't had a Lumix since the GH4, so it's nice to be back)
Nice video!, I saw your video running at NAB and I was sheeeesh can't wait to tomorrow to try the firmware and do the same thing. You ran first with the Laowa 10mm zero-D, was wondering how you liked it? Of course it's a niche lens but still, how do you like it? Is it worth the price? or Would you suggest another one (I know it's only manual focus)?
Fun video. I was actually using the 7artisans 9mm in that video. It's an f5.6. the loawa is a f2.8 though
Hi Dustin, I loved the results I got with S5II and I’m seriously considering switching to Lumix. I have one quick question for you. What’s the best mic you can recommend for S5II?
I like the Sennheiser MKE 400 for a shotgun type mic or the DJI mic 2s
A very detailed review, lumix pulls us over and over again, everything is really like a surprise, autofocus, stabilization, remote work on files is super
wow that e-stabalisation is on the S9 I think, worth buying just for that alone
What about the 24-105 OIS lense? Does the Dual IS helps even more with the High e-stabiization?
(I am considering buying the 24-105 for the Dual IS and for the extra focal length, compared to sigma 24-70)
I was using the 28-200mm in some of the shots on the longer end which has OIS
have they fixed the HDMI latency issues ?
Resolution has some effect in the stabilization? I mean can a video be more stable using 6k instead of 4K?
I think just being at S35 vs full frame has an effect is what I was trying to get across
I've barely tested it but I've made a few driving videos and it's absolutely amazing!! So happy :)
10:52 I'm doing this exact thing! I have the 10-18 and the 55-250 and they're actually amazing on this camera
in E-standard you can see the bottom corners of the lens hood or ring. but still good 13:28 but shaky but that high was gimbal like but out of all the test, I'd like high
Thanks for the detailed presentation. 2 observations:
a. If I understood correctly, using the joystick to change to faces or humans (in a scene with many people) ONLY works, in FULL AREA MODE ? What happens when it is used, focus area or one area ?
b. Incredible e-stab, BUT, when using 50 / 60 fps, the crop becomes 2x ??!!! (ie the 24mm lens "becomes" 50mm?)
Not sure if the crop becomes 1.9x in S35 or if it's not as much in S35. I'll have to test and see
If using a gimbal would you recommend turning off all IBIS?
Yes because it can end up fighting the gimbal. Not a set rule but for the most part yes
The LUT can be baked on proxys with "Real time lut", it's more simple that using "my photo style".
The LUT need to be OFF, because the camera can't bake it and display it at the same time.
Thank you for the true progression of autofocus with the new firmware. Please could you do a video on Panasonic S5ii X connection to Ninja V and video recording formats
Thanks for watching. I use black magic assist so unfortunately I probably won't do a video on the ninja
I have a problem with my S5iiX. When I connect my monitor (HDMI - Info Display - on) I can have Display info only on 1 display (HDMI monitor or camera display) and not both. Do you have a solution for this?
@@DustinArmstrongPro that is sad...the S1H didn't had this problem. I hope they address it in an update. BTW love your video ✌😁
Just finished selling my sony gear, switching to Lumix mosly cos of the stabilization, its just the way i use the gear, I'm tired of always carrying the gimbal with me. I will be shooting much more handheld, and clonking a lighter setup in the future.
GHX is a good idea but I want a compact L mount body and a cinema L mount body with VND over IBIS
For the price Panasonic is really great! My first real camera was the GH5, loved it. I eventually went full frame which I am happy with still have soft spot for Panasonic. Thanks for the video Dustin.
Picked up a lumix s5iix from pawn america for $1607 out the door I think i did pretty good
The new high e-stab is great on Lumix 70-300 for videong wildlife and anything far away, the crop acts like a TC this way. I am a stills photographer who just started taking short video clips along with photos and don't do editing... Not so far anyway so this is excellent for the casual videographer. I'm new to mirrorless, not just Lumix S5ii.😊
You gotta start running in every video! Just carry the Lumix on your next jog. Quality content!
Fantastic video, I really like the way you presented the new update 👏🏻👏🏻
Btw is there a Lumix discord server or something like that? I couldn't find any, besides the closed Instagram group that you mentioned in some video. Figured maybe it would be good to have one?
Glad you enjoyed! None currently, but someone is working on that. Not me, but I'll be apart of it. Stay tuned in the next couple of months
you should do a ibis test with the 24-105 lumix because its also stabilized :)
I was using the 28-200mm after the 24mm test which has OIS as well
Excellent video as always.
What is really like to know is can this camera with its new firmware save me money.
What I mean by that is can I pass on a tripod, gimbal, slider, lidar autofocus and still be able to create high quality work? That’s a video that you should make. Please!!!!
🙏. My opinion is no you can't. Those are all tools that can't be replaced. But this can definitely work in a lot of scenarios if you understand its limitations and disadvantages

Japan is 1 market. From January 1 2023 to December 2023, the LUMIX S5II was actually number 9 at the time
what about the af in 1080?
No change as before. 1080p 24 and 30 fps is phase detect, 50 and 60fps in 1080 full frame it's contrast detect. APS-C in 1080p is phase detect
for animals, if you select animal eye, it only looks for 1 animal. If you select without the eye, it shows all animals like for people.
I wish some if this would come to the S5, like the Animal eye
It won't. The sensor doesn't have phase pixels so it's a hardware limitation
TL:DR If there isn't a setting to fix jerky pans, the Stabilization feature is super over hyped compared to reality use...
The downside I've been experiencing with the stabilization is when I DO want to pan handheld either up/ down or left/right, diagonal etc. the stabilization wants to lock in place to mimic a tripod but then does a big jerking movement in the direction i'm panning. This is not ideal and unless there is a setting i'm missing, this totally defeats the point of stabilization.
I just wish they would enable PDAF in 1080. Some of clients request 1080 when shooting combat sports
PDAF works in 1080p at 24 and 30 fps and in APS-C modes. It's only at 60fps does it switch to contrast
@@DustinArmstrongPro In 1080p at 50 and 60 fps if you are in APSC mode then you have PDAF not contrast. In full frame 1080p 50 or 60fps you have contrast AF.
@@DustinArmstrongPro the thing is though Dustin, some of us still use 1080 and rely on auto focus. It wasn’t stated at launch that PDAF was not available for this and for people like me, who rushed out and bought it we found out the hard way.
Why not just mount the camera upside down and flip in post?
Oh you mean on the robot arm? We needed 2 points to screw in to the camera not just 1
Was looking at switching from my Fuji xh2s to the s5ll mainly because Fuji firmware seems to be screwing things up with each iteration, lumix looks pretty good but these updates look ok but AF still looks and issue and eye/face more so, improved for sure but a long way to go. So much to like from lumix though I’m sorely tempted, man in bonus would be to do away with the Fuji fanboy tantrums all over the internet 😂 time for a grown up camera LOL
perfect. Proud owner of Lumix S5ii. The best. For those who know what they re buying. So sorry for all those toxic brain washed haters out there...
I mean I don't get many toxic people. Sometimes but I'm usually the one making them question how loyal they are to their brand😂
Watching this video made me realize how far lumix af is from sony Af 😅😅😅 we are at a point with the a9iii where it can focus a flying bird at 120 fps while lumix is still trying to focus 24 fps 😢n no tracking in 2024 😢
Yeah and that took years for Sony to figure or. LUMIX has only had good AF for a year chill
@@DustinArmstrongPro no excuse for Panasonic, they deliberately chosed not to go pdaf and as an ex pana user, they were easily 4-5 years ahead of everyone in the mirrorless/ hybrid space. Cameras are just tools and I don't support people hyping outdated gear to newcomers...so chill. If tmrw Panasonic is ahead again in both body and optics, I will surely switch as long as it's making my job easier ;)
Maybe in AF they're a bit behind but specs and features this camera still has things and has got new things added that many other cameras don't have that are newer. Depends on what you need no camera will fulfill every job 100%
Do you think the auto focus has improved enough to film fast moving sports? I know its not to the level of Sony or Canon, but do you think it's reliable enough? I'd love to see someone do a video on this but I haven't found anything.
For photography or video? I'd like to do a video on this as well just haven't had the opportunity
@@DustinArmstrongPro ideally video. I think in terms of its photo capabilities the auto focus should perform well, but for video I’m really curious to see if this firmware has improved its detection capabilities for sports videos. I working on dipping my toes in that arena, but the autofocus is a little concerning.
I think Jeoff should switch to Lumix
But only if he can get one with a sun dragon at full price because value
IS IT TRUE THAT 60p FULL-FRAME DISABLES PDAF? NO ONE TALKS ABOUT THAT
In 1080p yes PDAF is disabled I believe still. 4k60 S35 it's not though
@@DustinArmstrongPro yeah but that is unfortunate lots of people recording 50/60p for that occasional 2x slowmo in post, optical flow is heavy on hardware
I was about to change to LUMIX from canon, but that 24-105 2.8 PZ is a game changer for documentary videos, so NO!!!
I mean that's fine. Choose the tool that's best for what you do most not because it's the cool thing to do or your favorite content creator or something uses a certain camera/brand
@@DustinArmstrongPro overall LUMIX beat all the brands, I love the features but for now canon is the best for what I need
af now works better , but still not as good as Canon/Sony, still no good tap follow focus function.
Depends how you're using it. I came from Sony and the way I use AF I don't miss my Sonys
@@DustinArmstrongPro yep, that's true . I have Sony , it used to be my main cam , but after buying Lumix I can't use Sony anymore .
S5ii is worthless without 4k60 full frame no crop regardless of how good the IBIS is. I sold mine after this firmware update because it wasn't included.
Another one from Japan
And I'd still be making the same videos regardless of any of that cause I did it for years before LUMIX did anything for me
not as good as I wish it could be. High E Stabilisation provokes ghosting and gives blurry 4k . Only good for vlogging and home videos , not for serious work
Depends what your definition of serious work is. But still it won't replace a gimbal that's for sure
We shoot Lumix but dude you seem well desperate... ibis on high looks like warp stabilizer in fc7 😂😂😂
Not him, lots of BS,he is probably doing nothing interesting, he sounds like ducky Trump
Your videos are too long. 28 min is too long. Break it in 2 parts (2x 14min ish).
They are not. Your attention span is too short. Increase your attention span. Or watch them yourself, 14min at a time. LOL! (The nerve of some people) Smh.
This new firmware served me very well last week! I shot a corporate video at a dental clinic. Had to capture the procedure, interview with the doctor and the patient, and grab whatever additional B-roll I could get. Had only 2 hours to do all of that. I didn't bring a gimbal with me, had to keep my setup quick and easy. The High E Stabilisation is ridiculously good. The footage I got was like shooting on the gimbal! It can be a bit jerky, but doing some extra stabilisation in post, and the shot was buttery smooth. Honestly, I forgive Lumix for the 1.6x crop. If that is what I can achieve with a minimal handheld setup, I'll gladly take that tradeoff!
I think most the time the crop is not really a big deal if you have enough light. Huge game changer!
Those are the same situations I find myself in. For run and gun corporate work covering conferences and special events this stabilization is a great solution.
What lens did you use 😊

Thanks for the information - I do a lot of social media work - I was thinking of adding a S9 to my A7R5 just for the need for the odd stabilised clips, as I hate gimbals
