Looking like a great camera and something in me keeps saying i should trade my a7siii in for it. But the rolling shutter is important to me because I do 3D camera tracking and don’t want to potentially get bad tracks. I came from a GH5s and went to the A7Siii and I still prefer Panasonics video features. I love the AF, Rolling Shutter and dynamic range of the A7Siii, but Panasonic is just a better experience in my opinion (whatever that means haha). @shariqahmed336Gerald was def right in this video about the PDAF working at 1080p, 60fps, whereas the S5II does not (in full frame). I’ve been at B&H all morning comparing the two. Decided to go with the SiiX mainly for that reason (and all black is sleek af). It is noteworthy to mention PDAF at 1080p, 60fps does work for the Sii when you enter APS-C mode
As an FX3 owner, this S5iix, with its Prores and raw options, SHUTTER ANGLE, waveforms, vectors scopes, open gate recording and multiple anamorphic desqueeze options is twice the cinema camera my Sony ‘cinema line’ FX3 is. Screw it. Just pre-ordered. Sony has us celebrating low hanging fruit like releasing firmware updates that allow us to shoot in true 24fps with a 1/48 shutter angle, this camera release really puts how ridiculous that is into perspective. Wrong channel to look at since he's more video focused. But generally yes the camera has no issue of taking photos especially with the new autofocus system. But a consistent arguement is just the limited lens selection the Panasonic currently offers so thats something you'll have to determine if its worth it or not.

There was a time when i watched every single camera review channel but tbh yours is the only one i watch reviews on these dayz
Great video as always, thank you! Did you find that you ran into the moire issue that others have, with either the S5 II or S5 II X? If so how did you rectify the issue?
I only have one problem with your reviews in general, that you never do a DR test for APSC crop when the only way to get 4k60p is in crop mode. Otherwise all your reviews are amazing and really informative, thank you!
@@MikeMarrah Smaller sensor area equals less overall light. The Full Frame sensor area is about twice as large. Also it has fewer megapixels so less oversampling. If it didn't matter, APSC and MFT sensors both would have the same dynamic range and noise performance as FF. CineD did test the S5 II for APSC and the results was surprisingly close but still worse.
@@richrollin4867something doesn't add up though. Smaller sensors do typically have less dynamic range, almost directly correlated with the difference in sensor size (MFT for instance is 2 stops smaller and about 2 stops less dynamic range than FF), and when tested, a larger sensor in crop mode also has less dynamic range. So this camera will also when is n crop mide
@@zsolesz0017 noise performance, absolutely. Because when you crop 1.5x it basically means the noise size (not noise amount) is scaled proportionally. That is, as long as it's an actual sensor crop and not a down sample differential. That said, yes, smaller sensors generally have a bad wrap for having less dynamic range, but it definitely isn't true overall. Take the Alexa mini or new Alexa 35 (which has the best dynamic range of any camera right now by quite a bit), or even the Fuji X-H2S which has a comparable dynamic range to something like the Sony A1. It's definitely not all about sensor size.
I really like my S5 iix with one HUGE exception. It has froze on me twice while doing photo shoots. The screen freezes, the buttons will not work, I have had to turn it off and or remove the battery. I cannot find information on this any where. Can anyone help me with this? After the first episode, I detached the lens, reformatted the SD cards and removed the battery. I am using Lumix batteries and Scan Disk v30 cards.
Panasonic is unable to confirm this. I asked. It performs better, but that could just be down to the detection being better. I'll have to do some specific tests to better estimate what's going on. I need to wait for the firmware for S5 II though to see if they add it to that camera.
Fantastic video! I was specifically looking forward to your review of the Mark II X after seeing your analysis of the Mark II. Could you provide us with a list of what resolutions have what crop factors across what recording media in what format? I'm having a hard time finding any if that information from any reviewers today- even from Panasonic themselves.
There aren't very many camera review videos these days with the work modem in them.....that just made me laugh. Once again thanks for another great video full of plenty of nerd food! Cheers.
Hi Gerald what is the 48-bit color we keep seeing on your charts? Does this mean the Panny can go beyond the 10-bit color depth if unlocked in the future? Great in-depth technical video on a great cam.
Ok. I have to pre-order it. First time camera is more impressive than expected. Also anamorphic aspect of it ... 1.6x squeeze with Sirui's gives cinemascope (2.4:1) and got anamorhpic stabilization ... I got like 4 different USB SSDs, hope all will work :D. This is clearly BMPCC6k replacement, especially if someone wants to shoot anamorphics ...
Sometimes you get caught up in the hype of a new camera and get less than you expected, totally not the case with the S5iiX it has exceeded every expectation I had and it’s become my workhorse setup.
Can you check if it's possible to connect an usb-c dock with power delivery and nvme? Will it detecte the nvme and to power the camera at the same time? Thanks

I keep saying I'm gonna wait until the S1 upgrade but holy hell is that getting difficult!
Thanks, awesome video as always.
great video as always Gerald
Thank you! Informative and fun as usual. And a bit nerdy but that’s how we like it :)
How would you compare the autofocus to sony in low light and to the S52
Great video! What about moirè effect? Is it big problem for this camera?
I liked the anology you used for explaining latency with livestream, like it's a quick fraction of a second delay before you answer a question. Just purchased the s5iix and waiting for it to come in now. Upgraded from a gh5. Thx for the video.
If u are a filmmaker Which one u choose between Sony fx3 and lumix s5iix ?
I’m a Sony shooter and nothing but stills. I’m looking to dive into video and this camera looks like the complete package. Thanks for the video!
Another great video!! Thinking im gonna scoop this camera up soon.. Super bummed about the latency issues tho.. Side note, how do you only have 380,000 subs?? Never looked/paid attention before, always figured you had millions and millions of subs.. Best camera review channel imo as you dont fk around and get into the nitty/gritty.. There was a time when i watched every single camera review channel but tbh yours is the only one i watch reviews on these dayz
Wow!!! Great vid! Great specs!!
Re: The Kondor Blue Handle - does it get hot over prolonged recording times on SSD. And if yes, how much? Does it differ with higher bitrates?
The Kondor Blue SSD Handle is super convenient and #GameChanger !!
Great video as always, thank you! Did you find that you ran into the moire issue that others have, with either the S5 II or S5 II X? If so how did you rectify the issue?
Thanks for confirming the organic 12 stops of DR. Any chance they can bring the "DR Boost" mode from GH6 to full frame to take it a step further?
Loved the review
The camera I've been waiting for!
As a bona fide Panasonic fanboy, I am so happy to see they've met your standards with the new SII lineup. 😝
Glad I preordered it back then! Can't wait to get it :)
I only have one problem with your reviews in general, that you never do a DR test for APSC crop when the only way to get 4k60p is in crop mode. Otherwise all your reviews are amazing and really informative, thank you!
It should technically be the same? If it's just a sensor crop it's still the same sensor providing the same image?
@@MikeMarrah Smaller sensor area equals less overall light. The Full Frame sensor area is about twice as large. Also it has fewer megapixels so less oversampling. If it didn't matter, APSC and MFT sensors both would have the same dynamic range and noise performance as FF. CineD did test the S5 II for APSC and the results was surprisingly close but still worse.
@@zsolesz0017 chances are it’ll be negligible. Worse? Maybe. But I’m willing to bet it’s not a practical amount
Thanks for your review! Looks like the camera is not for what I do but others might love it.
That BRAW is killler. Would be an amazing combo with 6K Pro. I wonder if the colors will match up
Is there any chance of you revisiting the XH2-S and it’s BRAW capabilities? You’re the exhaustive source to trust on such things!
Cute ending. Great review.
At around 4:00 you mentioned that 1080p 60 now has face and eye detection, does that mean it has pdaf or just DFD with face and eye
Basically 4k at higher than 30p is all APS-C. Anything 30p and under is full frame.
@@geraldundone that's awesome, I really appreciate it!
I watched the whole review and as near as I can tell, the camera can do video.
Excellent review 🎉
I'm Gerald Undone and my favourite instrument is the accoutrement.
Gerald was very proud of his Storyblocks segue! 21:14
Can we access the SSD or SD card by using the usb-c to ethernet adapter and transfer files of the camera to computer???
🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰 love my S5 but this is something else
The tethering is brilliant, it seems to be identical with my S5
does anyone know why my s5iix doesnt have the pores 5.8k 30p options?
How do long-time users of the S5IIX rate the camera? Has the latest big firmware update improved things?
That’s the best thing about RAW video, you can work with any color science
It looks really nice camera man!
I like how Panasonic release a new camera and give some of its features to the old version. Are you listening Sony?
There aren't very many camera review videos these days with the work modem in them.....that just made me laugh. Once again thanks for another great video full of plenty of nerd food! Cheers.
Thanks for the great review,
Does the grip from the original S5 fit to the newer Models?
Great regards 😊👍🏼
Hi Gerald what is the 48-bit color we keep seeing on your charts? Does this mean the Panny can go beyond the 10-bit color depth if unlocked in the future? Great in-depth technical video on a great cam.
Great video!
End credit choices are getting funnier and funnier. Nicce!
Man how is you warding the galaxy and doing vids? 😮sorry I couldn’t stop of say that 😀 excellent vid btw 👍🏻
Does anybody have hdmi latency numbers from Sony or blackmagic to compare with this camera?
Thanks
Thank you for this great review! In terms of video quality and features, which camera would you choose between the Lumix S5 II and the Fuji X-H2S for run and gun situations? Cheers
I came back to this video because I'm very curious to know for sure if the X version really is working with auto phase detection in 60fps. Ran into a new video and now they are saying it does not work. Can someone please confirm if this is true?
Noob question: Can Still images be written directly to the SSD drive as well?
