    Just an FYI from a professional installer: you should have trimmed out the shingles for the first 2 rows down past the ridge vent and slipped the flashing under them. Rule of thumb is have the shingles over the top 2/3 of the flashing. Rain can seep/blow in the sides of the flashing if exposed, and no sealant will last for long under those conditions. And the damper issue is because of different brands of vent pipes. The damper is for Dura-vent and you are using a different brand/model of smoke pipe. The combustion air pipe elbow also could have been regular single wall 4" 30ga pipe which has an inside radius of only about 1" vs the double wall b-vent which has a much larger inside radius. Just some tips for anyone else watching this video. Otherwise looks great! Enjoy the warmth!

      Seems like they worked it bass ackwards. If they would have started from bottom to top they maybe wouldn’t have ran into the problems of the 45* pipes and could have made it a straight shot. And working from bottom first you could have checked basement for cold air prior for joists.

    We have a fireplace and we've had to use it a time or two for power outages and snow.
    We were able to share it with 4 OTHER neighbors! BOTH wood sheds are FULL!
    Oh, we got word from our landlord, she has 2 other trees for us from other units/duplexes. SO, we're letting our next door neighbor's have one whole tree! Now, what to do with the other?
    God has a way of answering prayers!

    Well...how about that!!! We're moving into a smallerish 1105 sq. ft. home in Fallon, NV. at the end of June!!! You guys sold us on the Vermont Castings and our little 36 x 36 foot wood stove area will be JUST RIGHT!!! It's in the corner so the outside corner juts out into the smaller living room area & will work just perfectly!!!
    Grateful you can even cook on it! There evidently was a stove in there before because there's already a chimney through the roof & about 9 inches of piping sticking down into the stove area already!! Eliminating the roof work for sure!!! Going with Dual Wall and all should go well :D!
    Thanks again you guys for yet another great idea on being independent from the utility companies!!! It'll look grat too

    When we had our house built in 2016 we had a wood stove installed as part of our build. We are so glad we did. Our main living area has 14 foot vaulted ceilings (open concept--Living room, kitchen. and dining all one room) We have a heat pump which blows cold air so our living area is cold as a cave in the winter. First thing I do when I get up in winter is fire up the wood stove. We filled our indoor wood rack yesterday so we are prepared for the first cold day!!! Our wood stove has an electric fan but that doesn't do any good if the electric is out. So we bought one of those heat powered little fans that sits on top like you all had in your tiny home. That things moves warm air like crazy!! We haven't used the electric fan since. In 2016 it cost us around $4600 for ours with professional installation. And our stove is the smallest one of the type we bought! It is enameled cast iron and a mahogany color. We wish we had bought a bigger one.

      If you have a ceiling fan , you can put it on the lowest speed and push the warm air down. Some say to reverse it, but what I found was that it cools the air down to much and keeps it cold since it is flowing down the cold walls.

    Good for you guys! Wood heat is the only way to go. I have two wood stoves, one is an Arrow air tight wood stove that works great. It was bought used 7-8 years ago out of a barn for $35.00, All it took was some new fire brick, some heat resistant black paint, some elbow grease on the brass trim. It will heat the whole house without going out.
    But, My favorite stove is the 1917 Model AC Home Comfort kitchen wood cook stove. It is not an air tight. I have more fun with this stove than any other thing that I have. It is like living in yester year, lol
    BTW, I watched your cubic mini video and ended up getting one for my lifetime trip in an RV back to Alabama and Florida a couple of years ago. Anyway, I do hope that you get as much fun cooking on your new stove as I do.

The fire department said if we had went to bed we wouldn’t have woken up (had 4 young children at the time) my husband was like you and thought I was crazy calling the fire department when the CO2 detector went off but when the fire department got here they ended up having my kids get oxygen go in the aumbulance and my house had to all be opened and huge fans for like an hour the levels were extremely high they showed me with the CO2 gun they had. My husband can do a lot of things around our homestead but that is one thing I would leave to the professionals. Hoping to one day have a wood stove in case of emergency. We currently have a kerosene heater for emergency (I hate the smell). We have a heat pump but living here in the south our bill isn’t bad during the winter. (It’s our terrible summers when our power bill is the highest.) You and Barry make an amazing team! Blessings ❤️

    Just wonder why the engineers haven’t developed a triple wall pipe or a Siamese where the stove would draw cold air from the attic. It would keep the flue cooler on outside. Prevent having to drill additional holes.

    • @geraldmoore6257
      @geraldmoore6257 3 роки тому +1

      The flu must operate at the highest possible temperature. Above steam, above hydrocarbon condensation point. The more insulated the pipe the better the draw and the less creosote. Extracting heat from the pipe for combustion air, or any other reason, results in poor draft and creosote accumulation. I super insulated my SS steal pipe and I haven't needed to clean it for 35 years and draft is never an issue. Wood is my sole source of heat. I have no central heating system.

    • @vecamiolo
      @vecamiolo 3 роки тому

      @@geraldmoore6257 how did you super insulate the pipe? Thanks for the idea. Wood is my main source of heat.

    • @geraldmoore6257
      @geraldmoore6257 3 роки тому

      @@vecamiolo Every situation is different. You have to look at what your situation is and figure out if you can do it. The principal is sound - keep the flue gases as hot and possible and don’t take away heat on the trip up the flue. I bought an old farm house with a fireplace. I ran single wall SS pipe up the large chimney, sealed the bottom, then poured vermiculite (expanded mica) in until chimney was full. As soon as the smoke exits the back of the stove it’s in a super insulated environment. I can’t tell you how to do it in your situation, but I can say that it works. I check the flu every year and nothing but grey fly ash in the “T” at the bottom clean out. No black creosote. I do build one hot fire every morning with well seasoned wood and do not “bank” a fire at night. I super insulated the old house so doesn’t really cool off much overnight. Sorry I can't be of more help.

    Wonderful video. Your son is very talented. Nothings beats the cosy warmth from a wood heater during winter. Yours is really beautiful and will keep your lovely home warm throughout the long winter. We have a Nectre (Australia) wood heater and regarding cost it is better to pay more for a better brand. We are in our downsize cottage and paid around $3300.00 seven years ago. Great video, I never realised how difficult it was to install a wood heater. We have ours on rustic second hand bricks.

    Great addition to your beautiful home! Miss seeing you guys around town. Wishing you well! Loving your raised garden beds! I've had mine for @ 10 years, but I'm liking the height of yours.....plus the concrete blocks as opposed to the wooden ones I made. Also, LOVE the "cages" that protect the plants from foraging critters. I don't have that , although my garden is protected by fencing. Doesn't stop the smaller critters and birds from getting in and devouring all of my peppers....even the Ghost Peppers, believe it or not. Ugh! I'm going to have to rethink my garden for next year. The zucchini take up so much room! Darn it. But I love them! Haven't had much luck with cucumbers this year. So nice to see you both in the video. wishing you well! ❤️✌️👍🏻

    I love my woodstove. The heat is so different from any other type of heat source. Here in the mountains of California we lose power regularly in the fall and winter. My stove heats my entire small home. My woodstove is in the kitchen. I also use a offset pipe. It is the hub of the home. Great info from your son about the cold air intake.

      In Ireland the farmers have a similar system to a wood stove which is fired by native peat ( turf) harvested from our local bogs. My cousin recalls building his house without a turf fired stove ( range ) but could not live without the intense local heat such devices give out as opposed to contemporary central heating, especially as he works outside a lot on a farm and needs heating up when he comes in from his work at night. HE quickly fitted a solid fuel range after finding out the need for their intense heat after a long cold days work on the farm.
      In another place, the clubhouse for a local sailing club, the club members wisely installed a Franco Belge stove in the centre of the clubhouse, very useful for drying out and warming up half frozen sailors in from a days sail on our sometimes wintry waters around Galway bay. Wood fired stoves are great but nothing beats coal fired stoves for sheer heat, a Dublin fish and chip shop up to 10 years ago used to fire its chip pans from a solid fuel appliance built specially for the purpose. The heat produced was amazing, so were the chips.....french fries to the colonials out there.....
