This is one of my favorite videos now! I literally LOLed several times. From the makeshift hoodie mask…to you vacuuming yourself…to your analogy using a gang of cats! Just a great video! And…I learned how to severely age a chair. 😁
0:48 On the farm i grew up in as a kid we had a rusty VW Beetle in the back of the yard, a 4m (12 feet) tree actually grew through middle of the floor and up through the roof :)
Just fabulous, Ara. This project is going to be great when it's finished. If you need to cut chunks out in future, try using the technique we use in woodworking to cut out a housing for a housing joint or a 'dado' as some Americans call it, if you're looking for a tutorial. We cut many thin slices in a row next to each other by sawing straight into the wood, then we knock the slices over with a light tap from a hammer & remove them, leaving the hollow housing. In this scale, your pliers or chisel would fit better to break the slices off. We normally clean up the shape of the housing by chiselling out, but if you need to go in deeper, you'd go back in with your *ahem* replacement cutting disc & cut another series of slices inwards & repeat. Good luck! Oh & I can't wait for Addams Family October!!!
Laughing out loud at the "ahem" ;) Thank you for the technique idea. I think I know what you're talking about but I will check it out. My experience in wood working on a scale of 1-10 is a 1. So anything I can learn is great!
I’m not going to lie.. my heart hurt a little when you began to saw at the chair but only because my style is the opposite.. for your project it is stunning! I Love how you took the idea of having the tree growing through the chair! 😍🙌🏼 your talent is rare! ❤️
Your chair looks like it's been there for years! Absolutely perfect. The scene is really coming together. Can't wait for Addams family October, very exciting
Wow! You hit the nail on the decomposing chair!!! So realistic. You can almost smell the mold...lol. I'd like to toss in an idea...why not put one or perhaps a family of racoons, possums or field mice now living in the old coffee shop?? You did good...and the dremel was the tool to age that chair. :-)
I love that the PossumLady is suggesting possums! I do really want to do some sort of wildlife or evidence of wild life. But I am not skilled in creating animals and I don't want to mess up the realism with poorly made animals. I will be thinking about how I want to do that soon!
Of course I love the chair. It turned out so well. All the embellishments after you put it in the coffee house are just perfect! Love your videos, Ara.
This looks so good! What about a plant growing between the tree and the chair? That seems likely. For the cut out, I think what you really needed was like a coping or jewelry saw. Since you do a lot of aging, you may find one useful. Love your channel!!
Thank you so much Allie! The tool suggestion is a great idea. I know my husband has a few more powerful tools in the garage but I was trying to make do with my little dremel. I will go in more prepared next time! And yes a long, tall plant growing up from the meeting point would look really good :) Thanks!
Of all the chairs I created, the wing was my favorite. I commend your great aging technique. Love it!! A reminder that October, as I recall, was also considered miniature month. Thank you for sharing. Looking forward to your inspirational projects. Blessings.
Bentley House Minis. Every October, mini clubs would show their displays/dioramas, at the local libraries for visitors to see. It's one way that I would recruit clients, as well as in the local Colleges/Universities (libraries). Much love.
OOOOOH!!! Our club does that too and it is in October! (I am still fairly new to the club so I am still learning the "why" on the the things we do). You taught me something :)
I never saw this video and looking back at where you are today from this video, you have done a great great job!!! I loved seeing how you aged the chair and was not afraid to say oops LOL. Can't wait to see the final project and hear the story!!!
Loved this, Ara! Great job thinking through then implementing your extreme distressed chair. Wheeeeee! Addams Family October. I am way too excited about this. So fun! Thank YOU!
This is such an awesome chair!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I absolutely LOVE it in this project!!!!! That chair seemed like it must have been made of oak and seemed more sturdy than most chairs you can buy today!! And I’m talking for normal sized people!!! Wow it looks amazing!!! And yes cats would have tried to destroy it and mice would have made nests in it! Lol LOVE LOVE LOVE it!!! My favorite project yet. And I’ve had so many! Can’t wait for next month! Thank you for sharing and making this hard trip home just barely less horrible. 😳 I mean I just left my grandson! What did you think that you could make it a great trip home? Well, you did make me smile! Even if it was at my own corny teasing joke. (I do hope you got that I was joking!) Ok I’m off to watch the AFM tour again so I will remember all the details- an impossible task because you have so many hidden gems in there!! Thank you, Ara!! Hugs!!
Thank you so much Leslie... that's probably the highest compliment I can get! I am sorry you had to leave your grandson but hoping you have lots of video chats and photos sent between each visit (thats how my kids grandparents survive the wait :) And yes I agree this thing was made out of REAL wood and not that easily breakable stuff... that was one thing that made me feel bad... I destroyed something that was meant to last!! Enjoy the tour videos... you reminded me I still need to do the final tour of the conservatory! Hugs, Ara
Wow! I'm shocked! 😁 What kind of brutal destroyer are you? 🤣🤣 The poor armchair. Unbelievable but the result has become really fantastic! 😍😍😍 Everything done right! I love this style. ❤👍 LG vom Tinchen
Oh wow Ara..that chair looks amazing after u roughed it up..looks like it’s so fun to do.i May try this aged look for a chair in the attic of my treehouse...I always enjoy your videos..the aged things u do ect r my favorite..everything looks so realistic...looks very dusty ,musty, and gross just like u planned..I bet a snake or mice have made a home in the foam of that chair...
Thank you Cheri!! I love making things look old. I can't think of anything in miniatures that I find more fun lol! If you do try this out I would love to see your aged piece!
The chair turned out amazing! The hood bit had me laughing because that is exactly something I would do! LOL Can't wait to see how you'll tackle the bistro set. Are you going to have a iron style bistro set or maybe a mosaic top bistro set or just wood? I think a mosaic top would look awesome distressed.
I have decided that it would be an iron set but I hadn't even thought about a mosaic top. That's an interesting idea and could add some fun detail. I will do some research! Thanks!!
The chair turned out fantastic. It really does look like its been in the weather for awhile. You looked like you were having way too much fun tearing (ahem) excuse me...distressing the chair...lol
The finished chair is absolutely gross looking. It looks "beat to death" by the weather.I like it! It fits right in the coffee shop. Can't wait to see the bistro set. Btw, what type Dremel is that? Mine are so bulky I seldom use them. Also does not sound as loud. I hate power tool sounds!
Carmenlita Bagley Great idea! I will try that next time ;) This Dremel is called the Dremel Stylus. I really like it a lot but sadly I have heard they don't make it anymore :( However I think there is a brand called Genesis that has something similar but I haven't ever tried it. Here is the link to the kind I have if you want to do further research: www.dremel.com/en_US/dremel-press-releases/-/asset_publisher/rSeHpKK9sJI4/content/introduc-ing-the-dremel-stylus-?inheritRedirect=false
The Dremel stylus has been discontinued but I bought myself a Dremel Stylo and it seems great so far! I mainly use sanding wheels and drums with it, so that's all I can speak to. But it's quiet enough to use in my apartment.
I typically start by getting a dark paint color (like black or dark brown) into the cracks and crevices in between the stone. Then I will dry brush colors onto the top of the stones until I like the way that they look. The colors depend on the look that you want... looks up example photos helps a lot! Then i finish everything off with watering down some paint and dripping it in random spots on the stones... this give a more weathered and worn look. Hope this helps!
It was a hard decisions to make but I knew it would still be used for an art purpose so I felt ok about it. I wouldn't just destroy something for no reason ;)
Bentley House Minis Thanks Ara. By the way, you are absolutely amazing in what you do! :) Please don’t stop I am learning so much! You are a great teacher.
Really enjoyed the destruction of the chair and yes my cats have pretty much done just that! It looks great. Might be nice to take out some stuffing/foam in the seat and where your head would hit on the back of the seat. Kinda cave it in a bit to look sat in worn out. glue stick will work on the inside of fabric without coming through it to hold the shape. I saw a tutorial of a lady building a chair with the lived in look, distressed, with stacked books to fix a broken leg. I couldn't find it but it's something you may like. Oh she used a foam core base for the chair and carved out indentions where the weight of the body lay when seated.
I love how that chair looks however I would not have put dried Moss there think that the cushion of the chair will always be wet if it was in the weather so he needs to have Greener Moss or maybe even a few weeds
I see your point! I definitely don't think the dried moss will stay there but someone gave me an idea of making a few strings and maybe some smaller nesting looking materials... it will be fun to play with!
Hard to watch the destruction of the chair. I was waiting for some white paint to show fading of the upholstery in the places the sun would have beat down on it. I felt the original pattern was still very clear and in my mind it should have been faded to a muted shade.
For a tree that big to grow into a chair that would take more than 10 years, and also the chair would be nothing more than a wooden frame left after all the birds and rats picked through it outside. Just a thought.
Shoot, if I had known and if I could time travel, I would have sent you one of my chairs to destroy (which, to be honest, look more like your "after" than your "before," but it's a learning process, right? ;)). Putting the chair in was a bold move in terms of story telling, I think. Why is there a fancy chair in a diner? At one point did survivors carrying a chair in their wagon because they were clinging to that last bit of their humanity think they could make this place a home?
Thank you for being willing to offer up a sacrifice for my project ;) The reason I was thinking about adding the chair is because I have been in several coffee shops with big oversized chairs ... and honestly I just wanted to wreck a chair too!
