7 years ago on this day, I started a project called Homestuck Abridged. It aimed to summarize Homestuck in a funni way that newbies could watch and kinda understand what was happening. It didn't *really* do that because of a multitude of questionable writing decisions & character changes made over the course of the project, but we made it all the way to Act 5 Act 2 before things finally came off the rails (and I sunk into a darkness that I'm still struggling to crawl out of). Then the Epilogues & HS^2 dropped and wiped out most of the active fandom like a plague.
I first read Homestuck back in 2014 (watching the Let's Read to actually retain info), and only engaged with other fans long after the height of the comic's popularity. And everyone in the future who manages to find their way into the fandom will have a similar experience, where they're only able to look back at what once was and be filled with nostalgia for something they never got to be a part of.
This series is meant to bridge that gap, being a version of Homestuck that anyone who liked/likes the original can appreciate: a short, funny, and comprehensive retelling of what we think Hussie was going for, one that especially resonates with us, and hopefully you. Ideally, it could be something that people of the future can use as an entry point into this chaotic fandom, long after its death.
After all, there are a LOT of Homestuck fan projects, art, and videos that are only accessible to people who have already/are willing to read this massive (and often meandering) comic. Hopefully this video series will make diving into Homestuck easier for you, whether you're a jaded older fan wanting to connect to the comic again or a newbie wanting to understand what all the hype was about!

@@doofs Tysm! I was mainly inspired by Viva Reverie's But Really Really Fast series & TeamFourStar's Anime in X Minutes series. There's so many series that could be fun to parody in this way, but for me, Homestuck seemed to need it most.

Ok, for someone who hasn't read beyond canon can you please explain to me what's yiffy's whole deal?

@@doofs Yiffany "Yiffy" Longstockings is Jade and Rose's daughter. Kanaya was not informed about this affair until Yiffy was a teenager, for some reason. Yiffy herself doesn't speak and instead only makes dog noises, she seems to be more interested in action. She was kidnapped by Jane and abused by her but Yiffy escaped. She's also called Ruby because that's an actual sensible name that the designer nicknamed her. Unfortunately, Yiffy's name was set in stone by Hussey.

Man, I loved Homestuck Abridged, and seeing how this is essentially an official spiritual successor to that, I am so in. Are you guys doing one video per act, or will the longer ones be split into multiple episodes?
The longer acts will definitely be split into multiple videos. Idk yet which Act will be the first for that, prolly either 3 or 4.
Oh, well guess re-reading Homestuck was for nothing cause now we have Homestuck But Very Very Fast, thank you guys! (btw if you're ever planning to go further with this I'm more then happy to help with VO's and other mineral tasks)

Is this going to be an actual series or is this going to just be a one off thing? Cuz this is actually pretty good.
We're planning to go through the entirety of Homestuck, sticking to this pacing as best we can! Given the growing amount of story and characters we cover with each Act, it'll certainly be a challenge, but we're up for it!

Status update for anyone checking the comments: Act 2 is really fuckin hard to write! It's by far the most meandering and unfocused part of the story, so converting that into this format while also conveying all of the info we'll need heading forward (and keeping things paced quickly) has been incredibly difficult! That said, I really think it'll be worth the wait...

Homestuck but for the young audience of today who can't stand to read or listen to anything longer than a TikTok/ reel/ whatever terrible copy of Vine
I'd beg to argue that the original does it to itself. I'm sorta young, but I read the whole thing and there are quite a few flaws that would affect new reader retention. The pacing got pretty wacky near the end, the flash is broken and some pretty cheap fixes were put on the original that soured my first impressions, and it takes more than a whole act to develop an overarching theme/mystery (I thought it was a pure comedy/shitpost comic for a while). There's also so many ideas and characters with their own stories that never get to see fruition despite the story's size, and made moving on very frustrating at many parts of the story.
Basically I'm a huge fan, but these condensed/abridged versions (especially the new animated project) are great for drawing in people that are repelled by the barriers for entry. As someone who did indie music production for small projects pre-covid, the community itself made me avoid it for a while.
