      He looks awesome :)
      Can I ask what subspecies he is? I'm just curious. In Australia the main thing we hear about red tail black cockatoos is how rare they are, so it's really weird for me watching one flying like this. I know some subspecies are actually fairly common, but I'm just really curious if Faye is in the common catagory or maybe one of the ones where less than 1000 remain in the wild. If so, that's really special to have yours flying like that! I mean it's special anyway, but boy it would be special in that setting!

    We've had 1 of these beautiful birds in a "store/shop" over 20yrs. He was for sale, but never baught.
    I remember taking trips to see him when I was a kid, them taking my children to see him.
    He was always on a big perch, never caged while the shop was open. I haven't seen him in yrs. This vid makes me wanna go back & see if he's still there.

    Redtailed Black, Yellow--tailed Black, and Glossy black (threatened) cockatoos all live in coastal areas of NSW Australia where I live. They are awesome birds to watch. They love to crack open banksia cones and wattle seed pods. The large beaks of these species are often used to rip open banksia cones and branches to eat grubs (beetle larvae etc). They actually listen for the grubs. You often know they are around from the crunching sound of them ripping open cones and branches. They're surprisingly hard to see until they fly.
    Red-tailed blacks are free-flown in the free-flight bird show at Taronga Zoo in Sydney. If you wanted more specific information on keeping and training these birds then Taronga would be a good source. I did a stint at the bird show during a tourism course a few years ago. The cockatoos are kept in large aviaries out the back and part of our duties was to make enrichment toys for them out of stuff like cardboard cartons, grass, sticks, gum-nuts, etc.
    If you can get any Australian banksia cones (eg banksia serrata, B. integrifolia) wattle (Eg Acacia sophorae, A. longifolia) seed pods or gum-nuts (any Eucalyptus or Corymbia species) these parrots would love to crack them open for seeds (green pods, etc are better). Pine cones would do as well. Galahs love gum-nuts and wattle pods as well. I know gum-nuts are easy to get in USA - esp in California as they were planted everywhere (bushfire hazard though). Otherwise, your local botanic gardens may help.
    Cheers David (Ecologist, Newcastle NSW, Australia)

    So awesome, have to agree they fly so different. We occasionally see red tailed black cockatoos fly in the wild where i live. They make a much nicer noise than the very common white cockatoos, which often wake me up in the morning. On a recent trip to Tasmania i got the pleasure of seeing a very large flock of yellow tailed black cockatoos, and they were all flying at same speed as the car, we followed them for a good 5 or so minutes.

    Long time owner of 2 RTBCs. They are tough through puberty. Usually 6/7 years old. They have a very strong nesting drive and are huge couch coddle monsters . They never loose their high pitch baby sound that they only use for their human parent and I noticed Faye was doing that. They need a higher intake of protein so include things like meal worms in their diet- cocked chicken is fine too. Also don’t know if you noticed this but lettuce does not agree with them. I’m lucky to live in Australia so I can have an abundance of gumtrees to harvest for gum nuts and branches. It’s crazy how much they love to just chew and shred everything. Pine cones are a big favourite. The best food for them is a brand called rowdy bush pellets however they need more protein like I said and also more calcium than most large birds. Their beaks tend to look cracked and or dry when they need more calcium. Kale/ spinach is a good source or just find a supplement to put in the water. Great to see such a healthy Magnificus RTBC. Thanks for sharing.

He also gets wattle gumtree branches (responsibly sourced), and I frequently dig fresh dirt up for him to forage in as I have seen the wild Galahs do, is this enough enrichment?

    Off topic of the video, but wondering has anyone else had eggs with a broken end on them & if so what caused it? I'm wondering if my boy with his little hormonal tantrums & hitting things with his beak might have broken one of my girl's eggs. They're lorikeets, so boys don't do any nest sitting, they just wait for the eggs to hatch & then get involved in parenting (or would if he would actually mate with her so the eggs were actually fertile). He's normally pretty careful around her eggs & guards the cage on her instructions & protects her with them, so I'm just kinda curious & trying to figure out what happened here & if it's something I'm going to need to address to avoid future problems.
    He also picked up the egg by it's crack & carried it to a different location & then put it down again & girl bird retrieved it & took it back to the nest, carrying it again by the crack, which I find rather bemusing! It's not going to hatch now sweetie, it's clearly empty lol She's still insisting on sitting on that one along with her still intact egg though. Another week or so & she should be off them & I can take them to the vet for a general checkup & repeated egg laying (3 times over 12 months)

    Love watching the videos. I recently rescued a sun conure and a breeding pair of love birds. all 3 were kept in a hall closet with no human interaction. i have gotten the sun conure to let me touch him but thats it. he will not eat from my hand, not food motivated at all, the love birds will not come out of thier nesting box if we are in the same room. they are sitting on 2 eggs now. Should i remove thier nesting box after these eggs hatch? i have them all for a few weeks now. any advice would be great.

    • @mehere8038
      @mehere8038 Рік тому +2

      I'd do target training with them. My rescue birds were a mess too when I got them, my boy would NOT leave his cage & would really aggressively bite any hand that entered it. He actually came with a glove, cause that was what had been used to change his food & water for years :( He still won't tollerate ANY physical contact, cause of so many years without it, but he will come out of his cage quite happily. It was target training that I used to get him out, training him in the cage, through the wires & then putting the the stick just outside the cage, so that he would have to put his beak near the open door & then out of it & then eventually I got him to the point that he would even put up to his eye out for a split second to touch the stick & then once he got used to doing that, he started actually putting his head out to look around at the world without bars & very slowly started to become a little more comfortable with that world, so that's what I personally would try with your 2 in the nestbox, using the target stick to get them to put their heads out of it & see where that leads. I used fruit juice in a syringe as the reward for mine too, mostly cause they're lorikeets & that's the easiest reward for them, but a syringe may work well for you in that setting too, cause you can stick it into the nest box & feel when they're licking the end to squeeze a little & give them the treat, without them having to see or touch you to get it.
      I'd get yours a UV light too, after years in the dark, they're really going to need the vitamin d & health benefits of sunlight, which I'm sure they won't tollerate, so a UV light is a way of giving them the sunlight without needing to go into the scary outdoors. Mine really picked up a lot with the UV light, feather colour etc really obviously brightened up & health improved (mine weren't in a closet, but had been indoors & never had natural sunlight. They still HATE sunlight even a year later, but they will tollerate outdoors in the shade now, as long as their cage is covered on 2.5 sides so they can retreat back into it when the light & outdoors gets too much for them. I'd get all of yours either really good food or a vitamin suppliment too, cause they'll be deficient!
      The nestbox removal I have no idea on, I think personally I'd be reluctant initially, since it's their "safespace", but people with more experience than me might think differently & be better positioned to give you the correct information. Will also depend I guess on if they have babies hatching from those eggs or not. If you do & the babies come out of the nest box & start interacting with you, the parents might follow :)
      Just take it slowely, dont' expect miracles. Birds like these can be really hard to work with & take lots of time & patients. Remember to compare them to where they are now/when you got them, not what other people's birds are doing, cause you will see great progress, just not in line with what people who buy babies get & main thing I've learnt is to focus on how happy the birds are, rather than what I want from them. I wish mine would do SO much more than they will & feel like I've spent so much time & work on them, so shouldn't they be? but then I look at how content they are with life now compared to when I got them & I realise I've done good for them, even if I haven't got what I initially hoped for & expected. They really are happy little birds now & love being around me, even if they won't physically interact. They used to scream & bite or just sit there not understanding how to even be birds, now they love playing & are overall quiet, but chat quietly to each other & call me anytime I go into another room lol (I put their cage on wheels so I can move them around too, since they refuse to leave their cage - they will now play on the outside of it though) & they really are contented with their life, that's obvious. Before I got them, they were owned by a neighbour, so even though I never saw them, I know the level of screaming & distress they had & I know the biting & lack of social & play skills they had when I got them, so I know how different their life is now. Yours are going to enjoy so much just being able to see & interact with the world, once they get over their fears of the unknown, which will take time!
      Consider part covering the cage/s too, so that they have a place they can retreat to to feel safer when in a world outside a closet. & longer term, consider playing them videos of their own species too, starting on a laptop or other small screen before moving onto a larger tv later if you want to. Is a less intimidating way of introducing other birds/outdoors, since you can control the sound etc. One of mine actually comes out to his tv watching perch on the outside of his cage nowadays & then sits there & looks & calls to me to turn his birds on lol. They used to both run away & hide when I first did it though

    I'm sure you're a great bird mum, but how did you get this Australian bird? Their population here is decreasing rapidly. I'm sorry, but I'm not sure I agree with their ownership. We have a big problem here with people smuggling out our wildlife to foreign countries in nasty ways. Birds are stuffed in to tubes and arrive at the new country near dead. A budgie is one thing but I think this royal giant should be left in the wild.

      @@ShaniceAaronPianist not domesticated but “captive bred” there’s a very important difference between those two terms

    • @mehere8038
      @mehere8038 Рік тому +3

      There's lots of legacy birds around the world though, so what should happen to those? & in reality, they really don't care about our birds there, so they're not going to make laws making it illegal to breed them in captivity, so they will continue to exist overseas & yes, that does mean that smuggled ones can be blended into existing populations of captive birds, but yeh, in reality, they're not going to stop owning them, now that they're already in existance there & in some ways, maybe having the ones they have there now breeding in captivity may even reduce the pressure on smuggling, since it can be cheaper to breed there than smuggle.
      I totally get where you're coming from & share a lot of your thoughts! I'm just kinda trying to be more practical with teh situation we're currently in though. Best option would be to time travel & stop them ever leaving Australia! Kookaburras are one of the ones tht really upsets me to see in captivity too, especially when kept alone, cause they're such a family orientated bird & must suffer really badly in that setting!
      Also, not sure if you're aware, I wasn't for a long time, but there are subspecies within red tail black cockatoos. We always hear about the critically endangered ones, but apparently there are some that are common in some parts of Australia. I'm not sure what this one is & not sure if you already knew that or not, but thought I'd share, cause I know lots of Aussies are lead to believe all are highly endangered - although I have no idea if that influences how you feel about this one or not, even if you didn't know before & now do. Again I TOTALLY get where you're coming from & feel a lot of the same stuff. Is very bizarre watching this bird flying wild in an environment that is so unnatural to it & so far from home, kinda messes with my head as to what I should think & feel seeing it

      I agree with your concern but we don’t know the history and the effort this owner is putting into training this cockatoo is impressive. Species in Australia are suffering also from habitat loss. Some have been taken for conservational reasons as might have happened in other areas at one point in time. The Baudins and Carnaby black cockatoos are also of concern here. And one of those species flocked to my place in my front garden for a drink of water this year!! I adore them all ♥️ and yes no to them leaving Australia 🇦🇺 from now on!

      @@ShaniceAaronPianist I'm well aware it can't be released now. And it's not domesticated as it has to be trained against its natural instincts..the instinct to fly away! 'Lol'.

    Is owning a black cocky in the states due to the illegal trade of smuggling?

      No.
      There are some black cockatoos in the US, though extremely rare.

      ones alive as pets nowadays are probably all or almost all breed there, but how did the original breeding stock get there? I don't know, may have been through smuggling or may have been long enough ago that it was the accepted & done thing to catch & export our native animals.
      Also, not sure the range for these ones, but quite a lot of our native animals are also native to PNG & West Papua (since they were joined until the end of the last ice age) & they don't tend to have the strict regulations we have on exports. I know a lot of blue tongue lizards found as pets in other countries actually come from PNG/West Papua rather than Australia, possible the red tail black cockatoos may be the same situation, either now of for legacy breeding stock

      Red-tail black cockatoo is an Australian protected bird. A license is required by the breeder and the owner. There are no native black cockatoos in the US

    I don't know much about training birds, but I think it would help both her and the bird if she verbally praised him/her. I didn't see or hear her doing that and I did see the other woman talking nice to him. Anyway, I hope this helps.
