Parrot Handling 101 | Proper Handling With Pet Birds
Вставка
- Опубліковано 5 лют 2025
- Today I am talking about the most common parrot handling mistakes I see among clients. Some of which include:
1. Making the spot you don't want the bird to be, the most comfortable spot TO BE!
2. Over compensating for your parrot (they can balance!)
3. Inconsistent handling overall.

Yes
@@BirdTricks it's true.
@@mckennawong6561 Aww your budgies are so cute :)
I’m gonna sub ❤️ (remember me when you’re famous)
I don't even keep birds and I'm obsessed with this channel, those macaws are beautiful ❤️
i feel the same way. i want a macaw so bad but i am 67 years old and that macaw would outlive me. why put a bird through that? so i just watch this channel and smile.
Samw
U can just get an old rescue macaw that wouldnt outlive u bye that much
One of your best demo videos. I especially liked how you show even a well trained bird will react "badly" when handled improperly. Good job Tusa.
my parents always had parrots, and I was raised with a green cheek conure. He died when I was 19, and I had a traumatizing experience with a sun conure when I was looking into getting another one years ago. I am finally growing brave again and getting a sun conure baby next week! I have put a lot of thought into it, but am ready for the adventure. I have been binging your videos, thank you so much!!
I am so sorry to hear what happened to you green cheek conure it must be heartbreaking, I love green cheeks but I have canaries and I love them to bits even though they don't like hand's my canaries have been tamed by me, Stay strong! How's you sun conure doing? They are so pretty and love scratches. If you need any help even though i don't have much experience with conures I am more then happy to advise you!
I have been watching your videos for weeks now. Why, I am not sure. I have zero intentions of ever getting a bird.
However, this video resolved something traumatic that happened in my childhood. I was pecked in the face by a relative's bird. Now, I realize the bird was crawling up my arm trying to find the highest and most comfortable spot on me!
Thank you for such clear and informative videos!
I love that you always seem to know exactly what I needed
😌
I remember this "foot first"&"beak first" thing from Morgan training at the very beginning when she learned to properly step up&down. :) :) :)
Both brothers are so CUTE! Long time no see!
"Hanging up my bird" part was kinda funny :D -
"Hold on, I"ll just hang my bird here real quick!"
It was so funny!
BirdTricks never fails to make me smile.
You know, there are so many videos online telling us how to behave with our pet birds, but yours are the best because you put in so much time and effort on all the videos, love the way you explain the birds perspective, there's so many more things to say that make you unique, it's amazing how you handle any species of birds with so much love and patience. Your methods have helped me gain trust with my bird as well, I thank you wholeheartedly! :)
Comet gets so floofy 😁🧡💙💚
Tattoo looks so delicate and pretty
I would love to see a full length movie of you & your birds.I mean your whole family & flock😂❤❤
Their colors are breathtaking and the way they act towards each other as competitive brothers, but also as buddies. These guys are swiftly becoming among my favorite(s) of your flock members. Because everyone loves Blue to the Berry! LOL
I really like the 'hang the birb up in the cage' bit. I struggle putting my tiel back in his cage, he always lunges for my hand as soon as he steps off. This should help that
I watch you all the time
Tusa is the star today. I've never seen him so eager to train!
I love how excited Comet and Tusa are to train!!🦜❤️🦜
Easiest treats your birds ever earned. Always enjoy your videos!
What kind?
This video has made me realize I may have made landing in my head my lovebirds “comfort spot” since I’m not being confident in where I want him to land I will try your tips!
Thank you so much for this "How to" video!!! I need all the basic handling advice I can get before my Camelot baby comes home!
Tusa and Comet are just so adorable, I love them so much. But my favorite has to be Jynx
I really enjoyed learning all these tips! I don't have a parrot....yet! I follow you to learn as much as I can.
Thumbs up is an automatic when it comes to your videos. For those who want to train their birds the best way, BirdTricks should be their go to. Thanks for the class!
Yes please more video’s about proper handling!
Another awesome 'how to' video with both the 'wrong' & 'right' behaviours on display to make it super-easy for us humans to recognise 😎👍 The 'hanging your bird on the cage' option is brilliant - it makes it easy for the bird to understand you want it to step off, without giving it any ways out of the move like it would have stepping onto a perch. And you can hang them on the door as you close it, so it's easier to keep your hand at the right angle & gives them no chance to sneak through before you close the door. Bird + human = happy!
i cant get a bird at the moment so i live vicariously through birb videos
what a BEAUTIFUL bird!!
I am thoroughly enjoying your content and am very eager to own a macaw (even though many have advised against having a macaw as a first bird) however I believe that if you are willing to do whatever the bird needs, do the research and take care of them; they will be an amazing companion. Your content is making it more and more plausible for owning a macaw.
I see you have Tusa at one point step up backwards from the tree stand. Could you demo and explain more on stepping up backwards?
I love all of her birds they are all so pretty
AWwwwWwwwWw your macaw is beautiful!!!! Your amazing keep up the amazing content
wow tusa what a bird ,,& even more so what a trainer jamie you are the bird whisper supreme
Tusa's intention is to focus on the hand that serves the treats.
So nice to see both brothers, and even I can see that they are eager to "train"/interact with Jamie! 🦜
Loving your new tattoo!
Iam super glad i watched this!! My 8 month old Indian Ringneck has only been with me for a week and i couldn't figure out why he kept going up my arm when i was trying to keep him in my hand. I'm trying this as soon as we finish breakfast lol
I'd love some information on how you get your birds into the mindset that it's time for training. My bird may give me one minute of focus on what I'm requesting and then loose interest and fly off. He's not real food motivated so I make it fun because he likes to play. Unfortunately b4 I decided to do more than just tame, I've spent hours setting up play environments and letting him lead the play. It seems to me that he only wants to play when he's the leader. No problems with aggression.
im having trouble with my rescue, JoJo the Blue Crowned Conure, He has a LARGE fear and mistrust of hands in general. Ive gained some ground over months and months of consistent trying. I can now pet him, but i have to warm him up for it. I hope by watching your videos, i glean some sort of experience to put toward training him.
May I ask what treat you use for training? They're so beautiful. I am learning so much from these videos - thank you!
Wonderful!! Home visit was about all this as well. So important!! Thanks!!
Thanks for a great educational post. I’m so glad I’m persisting with this training as on Christmas morning my corella ended up eating the centre out of his circular bird kebob toy (all natural) but he had the whole cylinder of it stuck around his neck (only for a few seconds... and only a corella right!) so I immediately assisted him to get it off but he was so spooked by the event and during the process he latched on to my fingers. It felt worse than it was. He then had that that cute ‘Thanks for saving me and sorry I bit you, time for a scratch perhaps?’ look 😍 I’m also happy I still have my fingers! This sort of training especially helps in these sort of emergency situations. Happy festive season :)
Your tattoo looks fantastic!
Lovely Birds 💕💖
Tusa's just so cute!!
Great information
A video about getting a bird who is scared to fly to start flying to you would be amazing. I have a conure who does NOT like flying. I've tried the typical step up, then back your hand up each time but he just stops coming to me when he has to hop.
Wonderful feathered family🦜🦜💜💜🥰
THANK YOU SO MUCH! I really appreciate this demonstration. I'm definitely going to practice this with my Green Cheek Conure.
Thank you so much for all your informative videos. Im learning a lot from you guys. More power❤ to you
Its always a good day every time you post! :)
Thank you 💙💙💙
You make the basics very easy to understand. Thanks
rad new tat, jamieleigh! thanks again for another stellar video!!
Yes, another video 🥰🥰😘 love you guys 🥰
Another very useful video 😀
Awesome video. What are you giving her for a treat?
He's so beautiful ❤️😍❤️😍
Fanny packs are back in! Due to Birdtricks....:) Y'all should add a pouch to your store.
Comet is just the fluffiest chicken ever 🥰🥰😍😍
I absolutely LOVED this video 💕😘💕 Even an experienced bird owner can learn new techniques 💕
Great information 💕😘💕
This is SO GOOD.
That was good! ...loved watching the brothers working together so nicely! 😊
If/when I get a bird . . I will be prepared!
Can you do more videos about budgies? Love you! ✨
Definitely! My next upload is on budgies 😌
I always chuckle at the, "hanging up the bird" like from the magic show videos lmao
This explanations were awesome! I ll definitely practice more with my 3 month jandaya conure who always wants on our shoulders, head, back. Anywhere on the body except hand 😂also he does not like to keep his feet tight to make him understand I want him to stay. Maybe because he does not trust us yet and this needs time, patience and lots of practice.
Many thanks for this!
My sweet Mimikyu is missing most of her toes(shes a rescue) and my Pikachu has one damaged toe so i totally understand what u mean. They learned how to move maneuver and fly perfectly on their own with time.
This is off topic but I adore those names. Are they cockatiels? (I figured yes based off your profile pic and the names but I wasn’t sure)
@@ris8065 yes they are 😇 thank you so much
A handling video of budgies or other tiny birds would be awesome!! Please 😁
More handling tips would be great!!
Jamieleigh, can you do a video about footchecking? My conure started doing this lately and it looks really funny sometimes, but I wonder if it is something that can create negative behaviour?
Okay, that tree steppings all good and stuff. But can they shovel snow, run electric snow plows? Like, earn their keeps.
Pay for their own college-
I mean free flight training
Loving this video. I’ve got a 5 month old Indian ringneck and I’m not sure to go about getting him used to be holding his feet. He doesn’t like it. Any tips would be appreciated
You have great knowledge! Love it.
Thank you for the tips!
Best video ever!
Thank you for your excellent advice.
Very useful vedio thank u so much
A very important video. Much needed.
Hope you make a video about cockatiels soon 😇⭐🐦
I just subscribed to this site and I am so excited! I have an Alexandrine, Boo, who I love dearly but I fear I have been making some dreadful mistakes. So looking forward to correcting MYSELF! THANK YOU for helping us all! I feel I need to start with the very basics. Is there a group of videos I should watch first?
You look very pretty today(yesterday lol) Jamie
🤗
Also, thank you for doing what you do!
Is that new ink? It's nice! I love Tusa. He is soooo pretty.
hi is like a neg sun courier so cute
Very Helpful Video 👌
Your vids are amazing! I cant wait to get my first rainbow lorikeet ♡ i have a question i plan on not clipping and allowing flight in the house.. well we moved to FL and dang it gets stuffy so we ALWAYS have ceiling fans on... i think you can tell where im going w this.. i assume they figure it out? Buuuuut is it something that they DO figure out, if so do i keep fans on from the moment i bring him home ? I also havent decided between a baby or a rescue due to my experience level (none) lol im going to volunteer at a bird rescue to try and get basic handling experience
Wonderful tips! I learned a lot.
Lovely video very helpful!
When did you get the tattoo on your arm?? I'm so oblivious, just noticed it! Hahaha. Very beautiful ❤️ similar to something I want to get. I'm so glad you had the brothers in this video!! Love seeing them 😍 made me laugh when Comet was already on the counter and then you put Tusa down... Comet ducted his head down so Tusa could swing his tail around 🤣🤣 like he knew it was coming hahaha, was so cute!
Tusa has lovely color anyways i had a problem that I had awkward position with my African Grey i got over it. Thank you birdtricks❤❤❤❤❤
here doing some research for writing a character in a book of mine who has a domesticated raven, and since they're not commonplace pets,i figured i'd base it off of a parrot 😅
Excellent video as usual! Have to say I learn a lot from you guys! I got my first parrot a quaker parrot name Repeat! and after 3 weeks we are target training, learning to spin both direction and now wave. I am a dog trainer by profession so I love to capture and train tricks. I was wondering if you would do a video on like step 1-5 of handling/basic thing to teach first to a new bird. Thank you :)
I wish I had seen this two years ago before I got my first hens..they are very foot sensitive as a species, I’m now wondering if I could have trained them from chicks to use their feet like parrots..
Good information
Really helpful, thank you!! Will start trying this with Joey the parrotlet 😂
Great video, would you be able to do a similar video with your conures sometime? I have green cheeks that are a little more animated than your macaws...
Very helpful! I'm going to if I can get my guy to do beak first.
I'm curious about why you discourage shoulder rides Jamieleigh. I've watched many of your videos and this is the first time I heard you mention anything. I think it's more comfortable for a cockatoo to be riding my shoulder. We don't get as many issues with uncontrolled dogs thinking he looks tasty this way and I have both hands free to do whatever I need to. Plus, a needle sharp talon occasionally misplaced right up underneath a fingernail is a legitimate form of torture. Silent agony and tears are the only correct response to this. Reacting loudly in pain will cue him to double down his grip.
How is blue doing out with the bigger birds? I don’t have that issue, all three of my birds are about the same size, but I may end up with a bigger or a smaller bird in the future and I’m curious how you guys lower the risks of that.
It solved many problems of mine to handle my birds.
I’d love to see some of this handling with the smaller birds. Maybe the Sun Conures? Reason being, I only have small birds and I find it surprisingly difficult to get their feet.
I have 2 greencheeks. I usually only get the foot that's closest to my thumb.
@@codexone2194 tried that with the most tame and she tried to pivot backwards on that foot, probably just wanted to step down super quick, but it seemed quite dangerous.
@@stephandpets do ypu clickertrain? I clicked and rewarded in the beginning the second my thumb connected. Then just extend that time frame. It's the same training style as for larger birds.
Im still having trouble with trust in my birds and I do little session at a time at different times of different days. What and I doing wrong?
Like every one of your videos this was just great and informative.
