  • The Red tailed black cockatoo is one of the most instantly recognisable birds in Australia, but many Australians are still less familiar with them then they are with their cousins the Sulfur created cockatoo, galah and the corellas. So in this weeks video we are sharing ten facts about the red tailed black cockatoo that most people don’t know!

Another great video Nick, and yet a few more facts that I didn’t know, thanks for sharing your knowledge with us all. I’ve lived on the Central Coast just north of Sydney for around 35 years and sadly watched the decline of the these beautiful winged wonders. Years ago it was so common to hear the distinctive call of a flock of red tails overhead, now sadly that call is rarely ever heard.

@@WickedWildlife "haven't adjusted to humans" ...or they're just very smart 🤫
I'm lucky to have them in my suburban backyard each year, as we have a massive gum tree.
I also take the video & follow them on foot along the creek, to the park...with our koolie 'Sophie'.
The park has a self watering pole 'station', which are the ducks nuts 👍(in my RT Black Cockatoo video).
      Beautiful birds ❤️

Love our Cockatoo's, especially these Red-tailed ones, be an absolute Crime if they went extinct. A Sulphur landed on my balcony yesterday, and I was talking to him or her, and the bird was trying to communicate with me, but did not know how, just so smart.
I love those Cocky's, and people from overseas cannot believe we just have them wild, flying around, being a pest to other birds, and cats.

I own a Red Tailed Black Cockatoo. His name is Rocko also. He is just over a year old, so only 3 more years before he gains his adult colours. He loves having a shower, destroying my kids thongs and only likes me handling him, he doesnt like my kids or anything else. Cant stand me being away from him, so thankfully me being retired, I have all the time in the world to make sure he is safe, healthy and active.

Parrots usually don't accept new caretakers, unless their previous one has left them behind (death or abandon), and are also unlikely to accept multiple caretakers at once.
But it's possible to befriend them by feeding and doing activities together (cockatoos are energetic and loud, so singing and dancing are good options).
Parrots in general are very smart birds, and almost comparable to adult humans when it comes to social complexity; They ARE able to have multiple kinds of relationships with other birds, humans, and even domesticated animals.

Hey Nick great video but sad to hear of the decline of these brilliant birds. You may not know that maybe the black cockatoo wasn't the earliest Australian bird to reach Europe... Well, since I don’t live in the land down under!!! Good for you for educating me and others!!! Wish I could come/go to Australia, therefore, I leave this earthly plane!!
