He’s telling you his name is Eric. I rescued an African Meyer’s Parrot whose owner died and I started calling her Kiwi because we didn’t know what her name was. After a while she started calling out the name “Cokey”. I then started calling her Cokey and she would become excited and calling out Cokey with enthusiasm. Poor baby, I love her so very much. ❤

@@ArcYT I'm sharing this for the first time, and never even with family members: When I was 12 years old, we had a sweet and playful German Shepherd puppy that I loved to bits. My older brother and I had named him Apollo, mostly because it sounded cool, and also because that was the time of NASA's Apollo program. In spite of having been vaccinated for distemper, Apollo came down very fast and very hard with the disease and was suffering terribly. My dad, likely knowing what was in store, suffered my presence in joining him and Apollo for the trip to the vet. I still don't recall ever seeing my dad affectionately interacting with Apollo in the ways that I did (perhaps because when you're 12 years old, you're in your own world and miss a lot of stuff), but when the vet ( I remember he looking very sad) told us that our pup couldn't be saved and needed to be put down, my dad broke down and openly wept... something that I had never seen him do before. Afterward, he asked me to not tell anyone about his reaction at the vet's. I can relate this now since my dad is now gone. Whatever meaning, whatever life-lesson anyone could take away from all this, will be very personal and likely varied. All I can say is _learn_ from and, if fortunate, _cherish_ your memories.

Please don't ever get this sort of bird without keeping in mind that they bond to you like it's their soul grafted on to their humans. It almost killed her when I was stuck in the hospital for 3 weeks over a decade ago and since then, I have contingencies to keep her emotionally well and stable so we can keep herself physically healthy. ❤ she is worth it and I want her here long enough to inherit my kid who she loves one day.❤

If that's your bird in your picture she's absolutely lovely. What a great idea to have plans in place for if you need to be gone and she needs other caregivers.
I do want to say, and maybe I misunderstood what you meant so feel free to correct me, make sure to make a plan for your bird in the years ahead, after you are gone or can no longer care for her. While I'm sure its a lovely notion for people that their kids can inherit their pets, it's not so nice in reality. I'm dealing with this right now with my elderly parents and their two parrots. I grew up with both of those birds and I am fond them, but I am not in a position where I can adequately care for them after my parents are gone. In fact if my parents can't put in place a plan for the birds for after they are gone, that puts me and the birds in a very precarious situation.
If your child grows up and bonds with your bird and is ready and willing to take over her care when you are no longer here, then that's the best case scenario. But also plan for if your child can't. If he/she doesn't want the bird, or isn't in a situation where proper care can be given for that kind of pet. It's not fair to expect that of your child when they've had no say in the matter.

It's so heart warming to see when a cockatoo finally finds a genuine forever home.
I have a 'rescue too' myself and yes they are a HUGE handfull. Breaking old habits, making new ones, removing fears and anxieties they may have had from the old relationship, forging new bonds and friendships, it's a lot of work, but SO rewarding when they turn out to be the angels you always seen inside them!!
When my parents died, one right after the other, I was in a very bad place, with nobody to turn to. The rest of the family was bickering over who got what etc. I was all alone with nothing but my quickly deteriorating outlook on life to deal with. One day I was having a really bad time and just thinking of saying F it, im done. While I sat in my chair staring at nothing really, my little sweetie out of nowhere, climbed up the side of my chair, up my arm, across my shoulder and nuzzled my neck and nibbled my ear and said, I love you, then climbed back down and sat on my lap, working his way under my hand and arm to be pet.
It was at that point that I realized that I HAVE to stick around, ...to take care of him, because nobody else would, and he needed me.
(I needed him desperately too at that time, I am able to look back upon and now realize).
Even to this day, he seems to realize when I am down or not feeling good and will always come to try to cheer me up, or just sit there quietly with me, being company, basically my little feathered guardian angel. I have it in my will that when I go, he goes to one of the 'forever homes' for parrots along with a healthy stipend to ensure he is taken care of properly until the end of his natural life as well.

So I took him and he didn’t trust anybody. But he was a talker and he love to sing. Anyway, I had to gain his trust, and I’ll tell yeah I’ve got some scars on my arms and on my fingers where he had bit me. I got him in 2014 and within the six months he really started to trust me where he would sit on my shoulder and I wouldn’t worry about him biting me. My mom was like wow. Unfortunately my mother was murdered by her ex-boyfriend in September 2017, and, I really do miss her. I wish she could see my Congo. African grey parrot now, because he is a spoiled brat. He loves me so much. And there are times when he’s talking to me. He sounds just like my mother. He was supposed to go to my son when I passed away. But unfortunately 10 days after my mothers funeral, my 26 year old son passed away from an aneurysm. So I am 60 years old now and yes I had my children in my 30s. Smoky loved my son..And my parrot has been taken very good care of and he could live to be over 100 years old. I know that he will outlive me. My daughter said she didn’t want anything to do with him. So I had been so worried. Well her little seven-year-old daughter, which is my granddaughter, promised me, GiGi I will take care of smoky!!! He has bitten her twice when she was younger on the finger. But now that she’s seven years old when she’s visiting my home, they have started bonding. She can now hand him a peanut. But we still have a lot more work to do. Because smoky loves me so much. And there are times when he talks just like my son. And it brings tears to my eyes and smoky starts crying with me. They say he has the mentality of a six-year-old child. And he carries on some of the greatest conversations with me. He sings he dance. And I just hope that I live long enough where Sophie will be able to take care of him. Since she is trying to bond with him too… so I loved your story. And I wanted to share mine.❤❤❤❤

@@aumi.jewels It takes a while for a bird to trust you, to REALLY trust you, especially if they came from an abusive environment. Greys are a bit more quirky on this as well, they often want to bond with one person and everyone else, go away !! it'll take time with your daughter but it will happen eventually. I have found that they can really detect / sense what is in a person's soul, no matter what kind of false face that person tries to put on! If he's letting her give him food, then he trusts her and that trust will grow. My Paco now, I am lucky, he's an attention whore, it takes him about 5 minutes to decide if he likes you or not and once he does .. it's hard to get RID of him!
It's funny in a way, I have had people come to the house over the years, trying to sell me this, that and about everything else you can imagine! I'll bring the Peach Pest out to say hello. If he's all quick to want to hop on their shoulder I know the person is at least somewhat a decent person, but if he don't trust them or is edgy around them, not interested, go down the road buddy!! he has not steered me wrong yet!
Thank you for your story, wish there were more out there, but also on the same hand, glad there are not, because we don't need people thinking oh I want one now TOO!! and a few years down the road, here's another bird needing rescue.

They are some the the MOST high maintenance pets to have by far! I even brought two of them to school when I was in kindergarten for show and tell - and they were so calm. Once I had been playing with them and my mother called me to go to the store with her. When we got in the car and backed out of the driveway - the chickens chased after the car! Of course we stopped and took them back home. I've had MANY different animals for pets (including dogs, cats, horses, lizards, etc) and ,as far as birds go, would not consider chickens particularly high maintenance, and in my case, they were certainly child friendly - though their needs and local zoning laws would need to be attended to.

However ppl seem to think that pets like cats and dogs, for example, are super easy to care for, as long as they’re fed twice a day. But NO, that’s not true. These animals have many needs, and those needs are important to their ongoing happiness and welfare. What a great video! And what great people taking care of that beautiful, goofy bird! He's so funny!
I've learned not to judge when someone surrenders a pet. I work with a cat rescue, and while there are some who do so because they're irresponsible, some of the reasons have been heartbreaking. One in particular was a woman who developed dementia. She woke up one day and totally freaked out over the "things" on her sofa, and had her care giver get rid of them right away. Turned out they were her beloved cats she'd had for 8+ years, but no longer recognized. She died a couple of months after we took the cats in. That has played out with several variations in the lives of several of the cats at our shelter. There are other heartbreaking stories as well. Not only have I learned to put judgement aside, I'm making it part of my mission to help others learn there are valid reasons why pets can be surrendered. I'm just thankful they were surrendered to a shelter rather than turned loose to fend for themselves.

I was thinking it might very well have been his health issues that made them surrender him. They weren't able to give or afford the care he needed, and instead of keeping him and letting him suffer or pass away, they gave him up. I'd do the same if I couldn't care for my cat.

My brother-in-law gifted my husband an umbrella cockatoo he couldn't handle. The first year I was skeptical I thought of her as a liability. Now four years later the more I learn about her and the more she's grown into the family. I know she's a member of our family for Life, me and my husband constantly tell our Three Sons one of them is going to have pepper our bird. Chances are she will still be alive when me and my husband are gone, and I want her to always be with family.

I love the whispering even though it sounds like gibberish, he's very goofy, and even though I know it's not good, the bad behavior is too funny - especially the attitude he gives back when he's not supposed to be in the office supplies. Oh yeah, and the constant repetition of the name Eric - such a lovable goofball.

I’ve been to this clinic, and all they care about is making lots of money. They probably did the surgeries so they could practice on him. He was surrendered, so nobody to stop them or pay the bills, so they used him as a test subject and got lucky. That dr is not trustworthy at all.

WOW! So happy for this cockatoo! I have had cockatiels & budgies. They all have their own distinct personalities that sometimes don't come out when they are abused or not given enough attention.
When cared for with the right food, attention, training, patience & love, they can add so much to a persons life.
Petey was a "rescue" cockatiel. He was a dominant guy, so smart, so active & a total delight! The family he was with didn't appreciate him, kept him a small 1/2 BA, no window, lights off, mostly. When I heard the mom & dad of the family complain about Petey, I knew I had to try to do something to help him. I asked the family if they would give or sell him to me.
The response told me all that I needed to know.
No judgment on them, they were willing to give him to me, knowing he would have a better life. I had not even seen Petey when I agreed to do this.
He was so wonderful! Learned quickly, so we had to be careful what we said & which noises he was exposed to. When we got him, I let him rest & acclimate to his new home. He screeched a lot, he let me know which foods he liked & definitely let me know what he didn't like! The ones he liked, he would gobble so fast that he would vomit from being too full. The ones he didn't like, he would toss them out of the cage.
After a week for him to adjust, we started handling him bit by bit a little more every day. He learned to whistle The Star Spangled Banner, America The Beautiful, Jingle Bells & Pop Goes The Weasel. He started mimicking me, when I called out to my children. My eldest daughter was Heather, who he chose as his person. He was in her bedroom or with her most of the time.
Whenever he and I were in the same room, he would call out, "Oh Heather, where are you?"
Unfortunately, my son used some foul language around him, he picked that up, too! Sometimes, for no apparent reason, at a least opportune time he would say:
    Ain't that a b*tch
    or
    Just f*ck off
After 3 months with us. Petey began, what I learned, was the cockatiel mating call. He was lonesome for a bird friend. A hen friend! We didn't know if the bird we brought home was male or female.
    Petey knew!
We kept them in 2 separate cages so we could be sure they liked each other.
They liked each other A LOT!
The birds name was Connor until we realized Connor was a hen. She belonged to my youngest daughter who changed the name from Connor to Connie. Her bird, her choice. When she began laying eggs, we bought a nesting box. Connie & Petey were excellent parents, taking turns sitting on the eggs. They successfully hatched & raised several babies!
Connie was such a flirt, Petey loved it! Heather said it was like mating season on Wild Kingdom all day every day!
Connie lived to the age of 18 years, Petey lived to age 20. Both of their hatch dates were on their leg bands, that was how we knew their ages.
I think they had happy lives together!

I visited my aunt last year in Sydney, Australia. She had wild sulfer crested cockatoos flying in and out of her garden. One time I counted twelve birds. My highlight is seeing two pink cocktoos (gala). It is so wonderful to have wild cockatoos fly to your house daily and wait for you to give them some nuts. It's just like having a house bound bird, except these cockatoos are free to fly anywhere they want.

We can only get domestically bred cockatoos in the US. No imports from Australia as it is considered a threathen species. A newly hatched sulfer creasted cockatoo cost starts at USD 1000 to as much as USD 2000. I can't afford a cockatoo, so I bought the smallest of the parrot species, a lovebird. He 8 years old now.
