This drummer here... Totally possessed by the spirit of Tony Allen. I am not a music historian. Ariaria so named after a small part of Aba where this rhythm is original to. The rich Ariaria style is often heard in Igbo praise songs. Rarely is a remake better than the original, but I love this version. Me and my 4 year old listen to it almost every day. He calls this his favorite song.
I fell asleep a month ago listening to music videos on UA-cam and woke up to this in the middle of the night cause I was tapping my foot. I’ve watched this multiple times per day ever since. I can’t seem to get enough!
Honestly no other drummer could have simply fit into this performance except this very drummer, my heart is full of joy. Music without boundaries, Fela's legacy lives.
I keep going back to the 1st 16 bars he plays , the 1st 8 are half on the offbeat and as soon as he establishes that pattern he drops the on beat stuff and keeps time with the offbeats it's just insanely brilliant
Lot of people talj about the drummer, and of course he deserves it, but the horn section!!! Oh my god!! it's like a Ferrari V-12 motor my friends...😂😂 Making the band rock and roll (yes, i said rock& roll, cause i think it...), with their counter-points all along the song.....And solo interventions...You know, it's not so easy to make 6 horns play together like that...Listen to Coltrane's Africa Brass, here is the same powerfull sound...great great song, they all gave their best, and of course the cameramen and technicians....Each time i have the blues, i come here to listen , makes me fell better, and believe again in humankind.....Dancing"....😍😍
This is it, peak humanity. It's been 4 or 5 years since I've listened to this masterpiece and it never gets old. It's always refreshing. Each soloist, each musician, each back vocal, each one of them is a star bright enough to eclipse the sun in that moment in time. Meus camaradas chilenos, vocês são maravilhosos, perdoe-me não comentar em espanhol, minha habilidade em tua língua é limitada, mas vos digo que são maravilhosos.
I just want to say... That woman on the wood block carried the whole song. Drummer also nailed it. All the brass and woodwind solos were so awesome. Well done everyone.
As a musician and human it's SO rare to be part of some magical moment like this and you remember it forever. Every element perfect and the unity of cultures and talent just reverberating so perfectly. I hope this video lives forever and keeps finding it's way back to my recommendations when I forget about it.
I was feeling miserable, overtired and defeated. This was playing and without realising it I became completely rejuvenated and ended feeling the pure joy of this wonderful healing music.
That bass rhythm simply launched me on a strange ecstatic planet. Rhythm by rhythm, note by note, scale by scale. Music is a therapeutic drug...and Fela's music heals.

I can’t stop listening to this. Brass and drums are obviously brilliant, but the bass is hooked into some kind of earth rhythm that anchors the whole thing...absolutely awesome. I guess I’ll just have to watch it again! and again! 😎😎😎😎
I agree about this drummer......he must have perfect time, as Ginger Baker used to say. I do not think I would have learned about Newen Afrobeat, had I not been a lifelong fan of Ginger Baker, and even when he left England for Nigeria and set up his 16 track recording studio in the 1970's in , and his alliance with Fela Kuti began, I then came to know of what a giant Fela Kuti was for Nigerian music, and also African music in general. In looking for Fela Kuti on the internet, I was so happy to have met with the sound and the powerful rhythm of Newen .Afrobeat. I am very sorry that their popularity is not very much in the United States. What are Newen Afrobeat doing now? I see they are alive and well and all the members are solid and unified year after year, but there are no recordings of their music being played on American radio, they are almost unknown in even New York. I am sad to say, I have been a fan of theirs for maybe 2 years now,but I still have not known who they are. Their names are not mentioned anywhere in English publications, I never hear of their music being played anywhere despite how enjoyable it make us feel. The few websites that are supposed to be dedicated to Newen Afrobeat I have sent notes to, asking for information for when they tour America and where a person can get CD's of their music, but there is no responding person on the other end!! Very frustrating!!! But maybe it is better that they do not get too fantastically big. With big success comes big problems and big everything. They might lose their feeling if they were to get really WORLD popular in America,it could spoil the spirit that exists in their world for so many years already. I wish these fine musicians and artists and to have a happy and long career making their happy and rhythmic sound together. I just wish it were possible to get to know them a little better as people in a great band and hear them play live!! Maybe one of the band will read this and answer me?
" For US "???..... Is a member of the band replying here??@@ecamhi2563 ??? it would be really cool if this is one of the band! But anyway, if it is or if you are like me, a fan, I came to Newen Afro from Ginger Baker and "Beware Mr. Baker" because I was a Cream fanatic in the time of their Goodbye album on. In particular Ginger Baker. Everyone may like who they like as a drummer, but NONE of the other drummers of the 60's era players was as deeply conscious of the entire world of "time" as Baker referred to rhythm as a concept. To more fully explore the fullness of what rhythm is and what it does for the human spirit, he had to go on a long journey into Africa and specifically to Nigeria, and learn yet another spectrum in the vast array of rhythms and how to gain a deeper understanding of his single minded pursuit. Spending years with Fela Kuti gave him yet another big lesson in what he did with his talent. It's just too bad he could not kick that habit with dope for good, that garbage ruined such a percentage of all the musicians of that time. But in speaking of Afrobeat, It may sound silly, but I have not even been able to find a listing in English ( what is "drums" in Spanish? ) of the names of all the performers!! But to stay on topic, that drummer has either studied Baker specifically, or comes from a Jazz interest originally, because he without a doubt is doing with time what Baker had adopted as his credo from some earlier great drummer. This fellow makes everyone else sound better. So simply put, but really, only Mean Mr. Baker had the essence of what he did as a player thought out to it's simplest statement of purpose. I can hear in the way this fellow has chosen to make every beat as varied and meaningful and as complementary to his bandmates as he knows how, and it shows. Even the first few bars at the beginning of Opposite People are just full of small, subtle variations people may not fully hear consciously, but he knows what he is doing at every moment, and always making each measure just a bit different than the measure before if he's just providing the beat for the band at that moment. And because he does that so well, he makes every layer of sounds coming on top of his foundation sound so much better. And that sound becomes Newen Afrobeat. And that's pretty good. It's amazing they have been around so long, and I have just heard their sound for maybe a year.
I love the music of Fela Kuti, kind of crazy that a band from Chile cover Nigerian music so so well, they are very talented. Seun Kuti does a great job as the lead singer. Respect, Fela was a tough act to follow!
Altough you can hear that the wood block is added in later. At minute 9:20 you can see that Macarena Rozic isn't even playing anymore and you can still hear the clicking. But maybe I am wrong. What do you think?

That drummer is playing like his life depends on it, and he is in no mood to take prisoners. If you are watching this performance, and you note that your head is not nodding to the beat, smoke one of these and call me in the morning.
yeah ofc he's probably the youngest in the room and the base for all these incredible musicians. I can imagine that his pressure was so high, but he completely killed it.
Love this❤ As someone that lived in Ladipo Kasumu Street, Fela's home was directly behind my house...😊 Sorry about this... I feel very emotional as this wonderful rendition actually took me back home. Simply Amazing ❤
It's nice to hear Nigerian people like you "legitimate" the whole thing, cause sometimes beyond the "afrobeat" label, in Europe for instance (i'm french) some bands betray either the spirit or the sound, or simply aren't up to scratch...it's the best way to bury Fela a second time...I met Fela's music in the 80's, here in Paris, my girlfriend was able to dance on “Shakara” or “Lady” all night long, turning the record over and over. Then I met two Nigerian mates who'd come here to study, who introduced me to King Sunny Ade.....Then I made a long trip to Africa, although I couldn't go as far as the Shrine ;+), but I did cross the Sahara, Burkina, Mali and the Ivory Coast. Music and this trip opened the eyes and mind of the 24-year-old kid that I was....Music is the best passport, it opens borders in the mind...Just look at all the nationalities of the commentators here! greetings from Paris!

Believe it from a guy who has all Fela's CDs!!

Returning for my weekly play of this. Nearly 13 million plays at time of writing... Afrobeat, and Fela's legacy, is well and truly alive.
I fell asleep a month ago listening to music videos on UA-cam and woke up to this in the middle of the night cause I was tapping my foot. I’ve watched this multiple times per day ever since. I can’t seem to get enough!
That’s quite hilarious 😂
The drummer is insane. They all are really good but I really like the drummer.

Who mixed this? They did a bloody great job. They captured all the elements and presented it amazingly. Seriously great job!!

A lot of instruments in a rather small room, nobody was lost.

I just want to say... That woman on the wood block carried the whole song. Drummer also nailed it. All the brass and woodwind solos were so awesome. Well done everyone.

Maybe one of the band will read this and answer me?
thanks for this comment! this kind of feedback is very usefull for us!
Tito is the best! solid AF!...and yes...answering your first question.
I'm glad that you like what we do@@enobmah1955
I love the music of Fela Kuti, kind of crazy that a band from Chile cover Nigerian music so so well, they are very talented. Seun Kuti does a great job as the lead singer. Respect, Fela was a tough act to follow!
Man that lick. Between the guy on the drum set, the girl with the wood block and the guitarist the beat is just relentless. What a groove!
Altough you can hear that the wood block is added in later. At minute 9:20 you can see that Macarena Rozic isn't even playing anymore and you can still hear the clicking. But maybe I am wrong. What do you think?
@@musicialstudios844 we don't hear the wood block from Maca at all, it's Tom on the percussions beating with a wooden stick on some kind of small red metal box and boy is he a machine :)
@@catmate8358 it's actually both of them. When Maca starts playing the block in the beginning you can see the guy with the bongos hasn't started played the red thing yet, then he joins in after about a minute and it adds to the sound

That drummer is playing like his life depends on it, and he is in no mood to take prisoners. If you are watching this performance, and you note that your head is not nodding to the beat, smoke one of these and call me in the morning.
It does!!!
Like someone said in the comments, there is simply no other way for the drummer to play something like this!!
Haha funny
Yes, I was drawn to the drummer when I first watched this. Dropping Tony Allen-esque bombs!
yeah ofc he's probably the youngest in the room and the base for all these incredible musicians. I can imagine that his pressure was so high, but he completely killed it.
