I talk and film what is a known problem with the BMW E65 E66 and I heard other 5 series BMW. What most think is a transmission problem really is the Guibo Joint or also known as the Flex Disc or U Joint or the Universal Joint. The symptoms you hear are very similar to a transmission going bad. The Guibo is located underneath the passenger and drivers seats where the drive axle connects. Right next to that is the BMW E65 E66 transmission so during rough shifts you think it's the transmission. Please fix this much cheaper then trying to rebuild a transmission. I have the same problem hard slam if i almost stop and then accelerate. But my car kind of jumps when coming to a stop, how sure are you that this guibo will completely fix the issue? I got a software update at the dealer and that made my car worst and they told me I need a tranny $8500 :/ Yeaahh Right
just to double check on the symptoms of a guibo joint, if I come to a "running stop" without fulling stopping and hit the gas I get a reasonable jerk in the car.. I assume its because its not fully shifted down to 1st. Is this it?

hey my 08 750i turns on but won't move at all any ideas? we changed the rear bumper, trunk, and both quarter panels.
1st Is the car on a lift or on the ground? 2nd Are you on a treadmill like the old emission testers? 3rd Are the correct BMW zoinkinaters installed? All of these may ne factors which can contribute to your problem.
Henok G It's on a lift, they're changing the driveshaft hopefully it works.

After doing some research, I found a good link I'll send you through a message, could be a couple different issues, with the hard up shift, you could need new fluid in the transmission (I have a video for that) or a transmission computer reset, It could also be the Guibo but I would change the transmission fluid and filter and if you have the extra 100 dollars buy the guibo because it's an easy fix you'll be under the car already. I had my boy fix it it took about 6 hours, and the old flex disc was not even in bad shape. now the car goes into drive and park an reverse very smoothly. And I can barely feel the down shift anymore
how bad was your guibo ? , mine was in pretty bad shape , just replaced mine today , difference is great same as you , no more clunks , i just have a vibration issue thats getting annoying , wheels are balanced , cant seem to find the cause , it seems like its under the front to seats and leg area vibration and also the steering wheel vibrates 50-80 mph.
I have my 2002 X5 4.4i and kicks from 1 to 4 gear when I drive to 30 to 40 ml , dose some know what's wrong
When you replaced the Guibo did you you put everything back exactly the same way, center bearing, tighten all bolts. The only other option I can think of right now is I used to get a vibration in my old Cadillac when I braked my steering wheel would vibrate it was bad rotors, but if your driving not braking at 50-80 mph, might be some steering connection bushing or linkage connection. I haven't come across this yet, but a google search of bmw e65 e66 steering wheel vibration should help.
I have the same problem from 2nd to the first gear. But when i have Sport mode on i dont have it.

italboy13 after putting in my new Guibo aka universal joint the symptoms went away, I never tried sport mode so unfortunate, so I'm not sure about that.
Dude i hope you still keep your account here in youtube. I have the same same symptoms as you. When you drive the car on Sport the problem is gone. Have you fixed that jerk that happens and how? Was it really the flex disc?

Help please! I have a 2005 745i and the problem that I'm having is that when I cruise at 40mph, I start feeling like the car pulls and pulls but it does it VERY lightly (Actually only the driver feels it). it feels like it wants to change gears but its hesitating about it until I accelerate more, then the car shifts and everything is fine after that. there are no error codes on hasn't gotten any worse but I was told by a couple of good mechanics that those are symptoms of the transmission starting to go bad. have you ever encountered this problem?

Woke up this morning, got in my 2008 BMW 750 Li and the R N D P indicator on my vehicle are blinking as soon as I turn the ignition on. The vehicle starts up just fine but displays the message " Transmission fault...Drive moderately " on the dash board and on the navigation screen it says "The fault may be resolved by restarting " THE CAR WON'T SHIFT, NOT TO REVERSE OR TO DRIVE. ANY IDEAS ???????
That was the problem not 100% about 95% but Its fixed and much more smoother Thx for the vid.
(2nd Part Read other comment 1st) before you replaced your Guibo did you have these symptoms? Also my Guibo wasn't bad bad, but it was bad if that makes any sense it had play in the guibo that was very noticeable. I'm on vacation now and I will be finish editing the DIY Guibo Video next week and put that on UA-cam, stay tuned for that.

I have the same problem with acceleration sometimes as well, not all the time but sometimes, especially if I press the gas to fast, it feels like a lot of torque instead of smooth. Read the above comment from Anas the problem was fixed, this is what I'm rooting for after we fix ours. I need to order my part and get this video up asap stay tuned:)
My 04 745li, will kind of bump back (like hitting the break lightly ) on speed of 40-45 ,once i go above 50 and the gear kicks in, no more bumping.... is the Guibiu the answer to my problem ??.. Thanks

You can provoke the "ruff shift" by putting in manual then stop (2nd gear), give it half gas and when you will be around 15-20hm/h then put it in the 1st gear.
Would this also cause my e66 to not move its only reving the rpms when I hit the gas. Also sometimes I will hear i grinding noise if I put it back into park right under my seat. Also before all this happened I would hear the ticking when I hit the gas, also the thump once in a while like I got rear ended when coming to a stop. Any info would help thank you guys.
Mate did it work changing that I get this problem every time I come to stop the car traffic lights ect it feels like some1 has wacked me in the rear end I have a x5 3.0d E53 let me no asap much appreciated I got under had a look it does feel hard n perished type of feel

Its been a year and have the symptoms returned? Just curious because my 745Li has some weird shift issues that sound just about the same. From other forums it sounds like this has to be changed every 20K-40K miles to avoid the clunking.
Yes, these go bad fast, it's a design flaw, I've heard 1 guy is on his 3rd or 4th one already. Mine's doing great still I'm on about 50k miles.
Michael, I have a 2007 750Li and I had the same symptoms of it feeling like someone bumped my rear end, just like explained in this video. I replaced the Guoibo and it didn't stop the bumping problem. I completely stopped the problem by replacing the transmission fluid with Pentosin ATF1. I believe my solenoids were sticking, due to dirty fluid. I flushed the fluid repeatedly, until it was clean and replaced the pan/filter. Follow DIY's instructions on replacing the trans fluid and those solenoids may stop sticking for you, just like mine did. The problem never came back for me, after many miles of driving. My trans is running like a new car now. God bless and good luck!

Michael, after changing the xmission fluid to Pentosin ATF1 and flushing it repeatedly to clean it, I noticed that it wasn't completely cleaned. The Pentosin online instructions states that one needs to be sure to flush all other fluids out. Having said that, I need to do it once again, after traveling many more miles. I don't mind doing this again, as I am seeing that the fluid looks brackish gray. Also, for the first time, just yesterday, the car lurched once like it had before. So, I believe I'll dump and flush once again. This way, it will be ready for a long run, taking it to the full mileage before the next scheduled change, while helping me to get the most out of my transmission.
Here's a tip. Purchase your Pentosin at Amazon and get the 5 Litre containers and the price drops to $13/Litre instead of $19/Litre.
After my results with cleaning up the fluids, I believe the Guibo was damaged because of the jerking and bumping caused by the dirty xmission fluids, instead of the other way around. Now, after having a new Guibo, I especially don't want to damage it. So, this fluid change will also serve to protect the Guibo, causing it to last longer.
I have and X3 all wheel drive. I have a downshift problem from 2nd to 1st. I changed the transmission oil and filter. The magnets don't have any shavings of metal. The transmission computer firmware was upgraded and nothing. I reset the adaptive driving and no help again. My front drive shaft has about 2" rotary play. According to an all wheel drive bmw owner is ok to have that much play on the front drive shaft. I haven't checked the rear drive shaft. Do you know if the front drive shaft has a guibo also? Is there a way to determine if the guibo is the issue without taking the exhaust out and also the aluminum heat shields? Somewhere i recall seeing a test going downhill but unfortunately, I don't remember the site or how to do it.
Hello, I replaced mine a few days after you did, but I've been on vacation for the last week, I haven't experienced any more hard downshifts, it's running really smooth, I did go with a OEM guibo instead of the BMW genuine. I'll keep you updated on mine. Something you might want to do which I did, was a trans adaption reset after I installed the guibo, I've made a video about it, it's real simple I"ll try to put that video up tonight.

I have 125,000 on my 06 E65, the reason I have so many miles is I drive about 40k miles a year. My Guibo symptoms started when I bought the car back around 76k miles. I just replaced my Guibo last week, I'll have the video up soon, the difference is great, smooth shifts from park to drive and drive to reverse, and no more 2nd to 1st gear clunk and no more 1 to 2nd gear clunk either, I'm very happy with my fix. I'm on vacation right now and will finish editing it when I get home next week.
DIYsavecash hello. My 2006 750li has very similar issue. When I come to stop sign and accelerate it can sometimes do hit what feels like somebody hit me behind. After few hits it pops up message. Transmission issue drive moderately. Big message and feels like it is stuck at second gear. If I reset code it goes back to good until again it happens. I believe code is p17e8. Somebody told me that replacing few seals in transmission with filter and oil will solve this. Do you think I’m having issue that you talked about or also seals? Were you getting transmission issue drive moderately message???

I thought I had a Guibo problem, but in this video you suggest that it is only related to down shifting and in the lower gears. Is that right? My issue (2005 745i w/ 56K miles) seems only to be in 5th gear. Even with steady gas pedal, I feel it lurching /tugging randomly and frequently.

Hey thanks Greg for this wonderful video, I have a BMW X5 2005 I had the same problem, but on top of the kick, we notice the transmission began to slip more and more and the kick from the rear fell more stronger, at this point we drove the car with a lot of tenderness but in a period of 3 month things got even worse.
Then we got the “Trans Failsafe Prog “message on the computer and the car will take a long time to take off, we don’t know how this happen but the was no fluid in the transmission, if we had a leak it was a very small one but enough to detected it, the mechanic explained that duo to this the TRANS FAILSAFE PROG disconnected the rear wheels of the car and left only the front utilizing third and fourth gears.
We got this car use about two years ago, since then we notice a clicking noise right on the middle of the vehicle between the driver and passenger seats, when I saw your video I was sure it was the Guibo, but to my surprise we were missing a nut and the clicking noise was coming from the axel bar rotating at a low speed. My Guibos are ok so far, and we had no need to replace them.
My car take two of these and I was ready to replace them but I had no need, for some of you out there before you do anything or order any parts, take your car to a service gas station and have them lift the car, for a visual inspection if you have a clicking noise only when the car takes off, once the car is lifted push the axel bar by hand to see if it moves, my was loose because of the missing nut.
I hope I can save some time, money and trouble to anyone with the same problem I had.

Just finished uploading my Guibo Joint Video, no I don't feel the downshift anymore, all the clunking went away. I also just uploaded my transmission adaptation reset video, try that maybe.

I'm sorry man but you wrong I've been working on BMW for a long time most time ZF transmission on E90 E60 e65 e66 which is the same thing but a longer body most time you Bridge seal on the top of the valve body crack and depends how big the crack is of the crack small if you drive at low speed the car will be okay but if you punch it which it put a lot of pressure on the Bridge seal and will make the transmission go to limp mode and I seen a lot of the cases the valve body it self go bed

Joo-bo spelled giubo based on the inventor of the flex-disc = Giuseppe whatever. ANd it's not a universal joint - that is further down the drivetrain. It's a flex-disc.

Excellent! My E66 has been thumping for years now. This is the exact issue. I took it in back in 2009 telling them I thought a universal joint was worn and they told me I needed a new transmission. I know know this is the flex disc/giubo. I can't tell you how many times the dealership or even indie shop has been wrong. I wear a suit so they think I don't know anything, what they don't know is I've built a couple engines crank up and have a technology/mechanical background. I also had an oil leak, I told them I thought it was the gasket under the alternator bracket for the optional oil heater. They said no. $3,375 later when the leak didn't stop and all the oil drained out rapidly onto my garage floor, they finally replaced that gasket. This was a BMW backed dealership, they still charged me for it. I have no proof the oil gaskets (front timing cover, etc) were actually leaking. It's worth knowing your car. I had the 100k extended warranty on my car too. I was told $8k for a new transmission and never once believed that was the problem! Thanks for posting!
+SEHiser I go through the same thing when i try explaining to mechanics that my car has a problem and they tell me i dont know cars yet i have an almost similar background as you. Also wear a suit and i guess the mechanics charge me for putting on a suit. I have now resort to dressing scruffy before i go to a BMW Slearship or local Indy and tell them my problem but also lie and say the car belongs to my Father-In-Law and surprisingly it works. You should try it

Has anyone had the THUMP while accelerating through the gears?... I had a THUMP somewhere between 3 and 4 at 50mph while accelerating moderatley briskly..... Also, had THUMP when starting up from a dead stop AND had rumble when decelerating with foot off gas from 80 to 70 or downhill on the freeway....

has your transmission ever gone into a limp mode? if so, does this solve the problem?

We just call it "transmission flector" in France. I've heard people spelling it like "jiubo".
