    I show you how to replace your Guibo Joint on your 2002-2008 BMW E65 E66 745i 745li, 750i, 750li. The process will be similar if not the same on other BMW models, but this was done on a 2006 BMW E65. The Guibo is known to go faulty on the BMW cars and people think it's a bad transmission so if your not carefully a shop could charge you for a transmission instead of 100-130 dollars for this simple part. The Guibo Joint is also called the Flex Disc or U-Joint or the Universal Joint, others call it the Propeller Joint or Disc, it's the same thing. I know this video is a long one, but I'm here to save you guys money and Do It Yourself. Thanks for watching.

    Because of you I just saved myself helllla $$$$$. Thank you for taking the time out of your day to make all of these videos, I know how time consuming it can be when making videos/editing. Long story short, I bought my car from this mechanic guy I know for awhile. 2003 BMW 745i, with 92XXXX miles, got it for a good price too. He told the system update might fix it, but it didn't. I don't think he knew what the problem was, cause he was trying to send me to a transmission shop. I tried selling the car for the same price I bought it for but no luck. After watching your video I was 100% sure it was the Guibo and not the transmission. With the help of my friend that knows a little bit more than me about going under the car, we managed to changed the Guibo in one day. Now my car runs really smooth like "Butter" :). Thumbs up man I love your videos.

    This repair helped me to resolve some issues I had with a 2006 e66 750Li. Issues were when putting in reverse you would hear a slamming noise. Also while driving on the highway, when letting off the gas and then hitting the gas, you would feel a bump. Also when the car would come to a stop, the vehicle would make a jumping slam feeling from gears 3, 2, 1 or starting car and going from gears 1, 2 and 3. After replacing this, the transmission runs smooth.

    Just to add. Remove the giubo bolts before you disconnect the driveshaft because with the driveshaft in place you can put the car into neutral and turn the driveshaft to make the bolts easier to access. With the car up on jack stands, use your key to unlock the neutral lever next to and above the hood release and facing down to the floor. There is a red lanyard that you pull and that releases the driveshaft. Now you can easily take of the giubo bolts that are torqued to 76.6lbs.

    Thanks so much for the great videos!I just replaced my Guibo/Flex Disc this last weekend. I also replaced the driveshaft center support bearing, transmission mounts, and then did the transmission pan/filter and fuel filter since I was under the car with all the panels pulled down.While removing the transmission support is not necessary it made this job a bit simpler and I opted to spend 5 more minutes and $20-30 to replace the transmission mounts since there were right there staring at me.The rear end of the driveshaft was a bit stubborn but I was able to break the inverted Torq bolts loose with an impact gun and an air chisel with a broad flat bit to knock it loose from the rear end. It has been on that car since 2004 and had 205,000 miles so things took a little force to break things loose. Once the drive shaft was out, it took a large pipe wrench to hold the drive shaft and a metric wrench to turn the bolt inside the u-joint...then she came right apart.A couple of thumps from that air chisel again on the center support bearing and she finally let go of the drive shaft. It all went back together easily enough and it made a huge difference in the smoothness of my shifting both up and down.The whole job took about 3.5 hours using my buddy's vehicle lift. I'd add about 1 hours to the job if you are planning on doing it on jack stands.Thanks for the great video!

    wooohoo! Just finished this project with the help of 2 friends yesterday, what a difference. I have an 06 750LI and my clunks would be at random times...like 2nd to 3rd when cruising at 45? and it decideds to bring it up a gear. other times were when slowing down, feeling like getting hit from behind. I did a transmission flush just before this with Royal purple and everything is just smooth as silk. acceleration is very tight now, no more semi wobble or feeling of something loose. its best to have 2 or 3 people to be honest. and I did not detach the drive shaft from the differential, just be gentle and supportive when you bend it. having the back wheels off the ground is a must because I would turn it on, shift into neutral and take my foot off the brake while my buddies were under the car ready to turn the drive shaft to get the top bolts to change position, THAT made life so much easier! it only required the car to run for about 5 seconds. just dont throw it in drive or reverse and let off the brake. oh and with royal purple in the tranny and RP HPS in the engine i get about 28 highway doing 70

  • @jefftomp

    Thanks a ton for the vid, took me about 5 hours and now the car is perfect, can't believe how big a difference it made! Shifts and stops smooth as silk! One tip I will add, I bent a 19 mm wrench at a 45 degree angle to help with the nuts, made it much easier. Appreciate all the camera work, saved me a ton of loot!

    I'm doing this right now for my 2003 E66 745. thanks for this helpful video, one thing I want to say, when I'm releasing the bolts from the flex disk I pulled the emergency release to but the transmission in neutral then I can rotate the shaft for easy access.

    Great educational video showing each step. Guibo is pronounced "joo-boh". The hard 2-1 downshift 90% of the time is caused by cracked bridge adapter seal in the transmission. And if you go that far you might as well do the sleeve seals and solenoids also.

    Thank you for your video...I was able to do it myself in about 4hours...one thing that I would add is there is a bolt inside the universal joint that I took out very easy that allowed me to take the front shaft out and work on getting the three bolts that I left attached to the shaft and it also allowed me to put a new bearing on too while I had the car all apart...thank you very much for your help

    Yes sometimes but you would feel more of a clunk then a slip but others report different issues, normally it's from Park to Reverse then Clunk, sometimes for me park to drive, but always was from 1st gear to 2nd then I would slow down for a stop sign and clunk very embarrassing it sounds like your transmission is going (that's what others think). The worst sound was again Park to Drive and Park To Reverse Clunk. Sounded like my transmission fell off. Thanks for watching the videos.

  • @knoory
    @knoory 6 років тому

    Unfortunately I had mine changed at a local shop but the issue didn’t go away. It’s exactly as how u described it, just before the car comes to a full stop (around 15 mph) the car shakes/clunks, as if someone hit it from behind. It’s so annoying driving local and stopping at stop signs...any suggestions as to what else it can possibly be? I’ve already replaced the transmission fluid and filter, and pan...

    when can we say the transmission is bad? and not parts around it? I have a 2006 750li, change and replace pan and the tran fluid recently, the old one was dark. It work great for one day, after that the sound of the motor change to a more high pitch sound and when I try to use D in goes to P. any thoughts?

    Hi, have quick question: Can bad Guilbo joint be responsible for Transmission overheating ? I have 02 745. When i move from Park to Reverse or back, sometimes there is clunk or knock, but not always. And the overheating is only when outside temperature is high and i am driving in countryside - up and down in mountains ( ~20 minutes ) or staying in traffic jam for some 20 minutes. Thanks for Your time to respond !

  • @currency2785

  • @terrylentz7451
    @terrylentz7451 7 років тому +1

    Great video. Just a comment. The drive moderately and what I'm guessing was probably a "parking brake fault" error are most likely due to low voltage probably from the battery running down a bit from leaving the doors open, etc. or key on engine off while doing the work. Sadly this seems to be the way the car behaves when a low voltage condition appears as the individual control modules will report low voltage in an uncoordinated fashion causing all kinds of fun errors...

  • @boostdr33

    It is easier to use the emergency transmission release for neutral mode with the car off. This enables easier access to the guibo rear bolts during removal.

  • @ss86mc

    Also, just so everyone knows. The black rubber flex disk is called a "Giubo" (pronounced JOO-bo) and NOT a "Guibo" (GWEE-bo). The name originated from the name of the Italian engineer that designed it, Antonio Boschi. It is a combination of the Italian word for joint, Giunto, and his last name Boschi.

    Hello, no I never felt that I lost power, in the video it shows the bad slack on the guibo on my bad one, so once the driveshaft is spinning really fast you won't get the clunks or noises, at least on mine that was the issue. Thanks for watching the videos.

  • @keaaul808
    @keaaul808 5 років тому

    Great, informative video! So it doesn’t perpetuate further, I know it may seem minor but I just want it to be correct, the word is Giubo. From Wikipedia, among others:
    A giubo (JOO-boh); etymology: giunto Boschi, "Boschi joint"), also known as a flex disc, and sometimes misspelled as guibo, is a flexible coupling used to transmit rotational torque between the drive shaft and the companion flange on mechanical devices, such as an automobile engine.

    Parking Brake Malfunction. Typical 7 series issue. I haven't even bothered to fix mine. It's the emergency brake in the trunk between the back of the back seats and the spare tire cover. There are 3 or 4 8mm bolts(?) that release a plastic cover. Inside there is the emergency brake module. They have a repair kit on ebay for it. I don't remember the price.

    Hey, I'm doing mine right now as we speak! Did u have ur floor Jack mounted on the gas tank in the back? That's the only place I see in the rear to mount my Jack on mine. I'm doin the flex joint, rear differential and the transmission flush.

    • @DIYsavecash
      @DIYsavecash  8 років тому

      +br3wskee awesome, I actually jack it up from the rear differential but I would lay a piece of flat strong wood down on top of the jack head, so as to lay flat under the rear diff for support, it might be a little tricky with doing the rear diff oil, but I think I got to the plug just fine, you might want to watch my video of rear diff oil change. Happy fixing you'll like the results after those fixes.

    Chris how many miles fo you figure were on your Guibo when you did this? thanks for the thorough video.. you're actually making me more confident to start taking on my '08 750i which comes off of warranty coverage next month lol ;-)

      @DIYsavecash  10 років тому +1

      I don't remember the exact amount of miles but I think it was over 100k, but I noticed it right away after purchasing the car with 76k. 2nd Guibo was an OEM, if BMW made a bad guibo I don't want to take that risk again.

      +DIYsavecash funny - I forgot I posted a comment on this video. It's been a year and I've got 91K on my 750i now and I'm pretty certain my giubo has failed. going to open it up later today to check.. it started off as a grinding that got worse over the span of a few days and finally as I drove the car home doing 20MPH it sounded like one of my tires had let go and was slapping my undercarriage *and* the whole rear end was shimmying back and forth. I won't know til I check though.

    How long can you drive your car with a bad guibo? And what happens if you keep driving your car with bad guibo?

    • @pangveear7327
      @pangveear7327 6 років тому

      late reply... bad idea to keep driving it.. you can loose the whole DS and or your transmission including your differential

  • @pangveear7327
    @pangveear7327 6 років тому +1

    video mark at 20:20.. notice the guibo is placed the wrong way that's why it prematurely wear.... and for watchers be aware of the CSB... make sure to put it the right way on the DS.. if you notice on the CSB a wider part of the center rubber is noticeable... that wider part has to be facing the transmission.. coz u need to "preload" the bearing.. meaning before tightening it which was NOT done on this video could cause u a premature wear on that CSB.. "preload" means that before tightening the two nuts that will hold that CSB u need to PUSH the whole bearing about 5mm towards the transmission this will center the bearing on the middle rubber hence "preload"... hope all DIY here have the whole day and parts readily available before changing things.. and oh yeah make sure your "Guibo" or Flex disc is the right size on your car.... they come in different sizes... if you see a mark on the Guibo with "GAB74"... that's smaller than "GAB80"..... and if you dont have any markings on your busted guibo be sure you buy the right one especially if buying it online. Cheers !... great vid !...

      Couple things I'll add from my experience. After you put car on stands, put penetrating oil on the exhaust bolts. Use 75/25 mix trans fluid, high mileage/acetone in an oil can.soak 10 min. No penetrating oil on the market competes with this, none. Make sure you can get these off or the project comes to a complete hault. 2. The 10 mm bolt heads on the plastic covers, tighten them a smidge before you take them off. It takes the tension off. I broke a few before I did this. Some also broke when putting them back so be snug not firm putting them back. 3. Use the strap. 4. Get new flare nuts for exhaust. I used 8x 1.25 mm with some washers, made the nuts 13mm instead of the 12mm I took off. Take your time. I did it in 6 hours

    • @DIYsavecash
      @DIYsavecash  9 років тому

      soton000 I believe so, there is play with these, the designer in my opinion did a bad job, I've heard of BMW owners who have their 3rd or 4th one installed, because of this problem. My car is now on 172k I did mine I believe less then 75k ago maybe even 65k I can't remember but I'm getting the click again, not as bad as when I first bought the car with the bammm shifting from 2 to 1 and 1 to 2 etc, but if I keep the car another 50k I'll probably have to put another one in.

    so if I go up a hill and the gear seems to skip and goes into transmission fail safe this is the guibo too? please advise.

    • @DIYsavecash
      @DIYsavecash  8 років тому +1

      +QMAX21 Hello, it could or could not be, when I was having my Guibo issues my transmission never went into fail safe mode, it could be the transmission sleeve adapter etc, try to Google BMW E65 E66 transmission fail safe mode issues, and read everything you can about this issue in the BMW forums that's where I get all my help when I need it:) Keep me up to date on the issue. You could also try a transmission reset, the other thing that comes to mind is if you have a leak or the oil level is low?

      What did u find out?

    • @QMAX21
      @QMAX21 8 років тому +1

      I found out it was the valve seals leaking oil. The misfires caused the transmission fault to come on.Once this is fixed and the oil cleaned out of the spark plugs the problem should be fine.

    That's sounds like a fair price to myself as well, the part he'll get for about 100, and he's charging you 400 in labor, if I were to do this job for someone, I would probably charge the same, if you have the cash it's a good price. Try to get him to do 500 out the door no tax:) Thanks for watching:)
